Shane Watson, the Australian vice-captain, has signed with the Sydney Sixers in the Twenty20 Big Bash League, meaning he will take part in the competition in the gap between home Test series against New Zealand and India.By signing with the Sixers, Watson will stay close to the SCG, but will need to manage his workload carefully amid a raft of international commitments between August and February.Stuart Clark, the Sixers general manager, said he signed Watson with the knowledge that issues of fitness or fatigue may mean Watson’s role in the first BBL is limited to one match – or none. However Clark wanted to establish a rapport with Watson in the knowledge that future summers might be more amenable to his participation.”We expect him to be fully fit and ready to play when the competition comes around, but at the same time we want Shane to have a long-term relationship with the Sixers,” Clark told ESPNcricinfo. “As someone who has played international cricket I know how demanding it can be, so we’ll take it on a case by case basis and work out what is best with Shane.”Clark said it was possible an agreement would be struck to cover the cost of Watson’s personal physio needs, mirroring the role played by John Gloster, the Rajasthan physio, whenever Watson has been in India on international duty.”We’ll tailor something to what Shane needs, we’re well aware of his requirements and the needs for regular physio to keep him fit,” Clark said.Mitchell Johnson, another cricketer expected to be battling a hefty international schedule, has elected not to sign with any BBL team, while the Test captain Michael Clarke is yet to declare his intentions.”When Stuart rang me about joining the Sixers I was excited about the type of team that he was building and the quality group of players that he was putting together,” Watson said.”It’s great to be based at my favourite place in the world to play cricket, the SCG, and I hope that I can add something to the squad and be part of a winning culture.”Clark was similarly enthusiastic about Watson’s presence in the squad, which means he will have to choose between the Sixers and the Rajasthan Royals of the Indian Premier League should both qualify for next year’s T20 Champions League.”Shane is a quality cricketer and we are delighted that he has chosen to join the Sixers,” Clark said.”He brings a combination of experience and class, and will help provide the leadership that will teach our younger players what it takes to win. He is a match-winner with both bat and ball, and a quality human being.”The squads so far

Middlesex bring Sussex back to earth

Middlesex ended Sussex’s unbeaten start to the Friends Life t20 with afive-wicket win at Hove

Scorecard
Middlesex ended Sussex’s unbeaten start to the Friends Life t20 with afive-wicket win at Hove. The visitors reached their target of 164 with a ball to spare with ScottNewman’s 39 not out guiding them home.Middlesex began the final over needing eight to win but Rana Naved ran out JohnSimpson off the first ball. His next delivery was a wide and Newman and RyanMcLaren kept their nerve to secure their first win in the South Group.Newman was dropped three times, firstly when Mike Yardy failed to hang on to adiving effort to his right and twice in the same Monty Panesar over by Rana onthe mid-wicket boundary.Middlesex had been put on course by a second-wicket stand of 70 from 47 ballsbetween Australian Chris Rogers and Steven Crook. They came together in the fourth over after Paul Stirling was caught off atop-edge to give left-armer Chris Liddle the first of his two wickets.Rogers and Crook found the gaps expertly to take their side to 101 for 1 whenPanesar dragged Sussex back by taking two wickets in the 12th over. Crook holedout to long off and two balls later Rogers was held by wicketkeeper Andy Hoddfor 46 off 40 balls with five fours.Earlier, Luke Wright scored his second successive half-century as Sussex made163 for eight on a slow pitch that suited bowlers who took pace off the ball.None more so than Panthers’ skipper Neil Dexter who finished withcompetition-best figures of four for 21 from three overs including two wicketsin the final over.Dexter probably felt he owed his side those wickets after badly dropping Wrighton 57 at extra cover off McLaren. He went on to make 71 from 45 balls with sevenfours and two sixes to follow his unbeaten 81 in Sussex’s win over Essex onWednesday.Wright put on 31 for the opening wicket with Chris Nash and then added 47 in 33balls with skipper Yardy for the fourth wicket.Dexter claimed his first wicket when he bowled Yardy as he made room to cut andSussex lost their way when Joe Gatting was run out after failing to beatStirling’s throw from long off and then Yardy was held at long on off the firstball of the 17th over.Rana Naved did smash 19 off seven balls including a straight six over thesight-screen but it did not prove enough.

Tiripano, Chatara destroy Rhinos

Tendai Chatara and Donald Tiripano ran through Mid West Rhinos’ batting line-up twice in a day as Mountaineers beat them by an innings and 96 runs and cemented top spot

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Feb-2011
ScorecardMountaineers cemented their place at the top of the Castle Logan Cup table with a crushing innings-and-96-run victory over second-placed Mid West Rhinos at the Kwekwe Sports Club. Their new-ball bowlers Tendai Chatara and Donald Tiripano ran through Rhinos’ batting line-up twice on the third day, bowling them out for 61 in the first innings and then 88 in the second. It meant the match was over in two days, since the first one had been almost completely washed out. Most of Mountaineers’ batsmen struggled on the second day, but there were two standout innings: a gutsy 52 by opener Tino Mawoyo and a 108-ball 105 by 19-year-old Gary Chirimuta. Those two scores helped Mountaineers get to 245 in their first innings. Rhinos seamer Justin Lewis picked up six wickets, but it was the Mountaineers’ quicks who did the telling damage. Tiripano struck on the second day itself, leaving Rhinos 14 for 1 at stumps, but it was just a precursor for the carnage the seamers were to unfold on Monday. Tiripano took five in the first innings, while Chatara took three. They then exchanged roles for the second innings, with Chatara taking the five-for and Tiripano chipping in with two scalps. Rhinos batsmen were hapless, with only two getting to double figures in the first innings and three in the second.

Leeds: Phillips starts vs Crystal Palace

Kalvin Phillips will return to Leeds United’s starting XI for Monday night’s trip to Crystal Palace.

The lowdown

Leeds travel to Selhurst Park for the 20.00 kick-off looking to make it four wins in five matches.

They weren’t in action last weekend, with their game against Chelsea postponed due to the Blues’ FA Cup semi-final commitments.

The Whites are still in need of points to ensure survival after 18th-place Burnley beat Southampton on Thursday night to close the gap to five.

£38,000-per-week midfielder Phillips hasn’t started a Premier League match since the 2-2 draw with Brentford way back at the start of December.

After a four-month spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, he returned for the final 24 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Southampton on 2 April and got another 31 minutes under his belt as Leeds beat Watford 3-0 last time out.

The latest

Leeds Live writer Beren Cross reported on Saturday morning from Jesse Marsch’s press conference at Thorp Arch that Phillips is ‘confirmed to start’ already.

The verdict

Phillips has demonstrated in his two recent substitute cameos that he’s ready to return.

At Vicarage Road, he won two of the three ground duels he contested after coming on, regaining possession three times, and completed nine out of 12 passes (via SofaScore).

You wonder if Leeds would have been able to avoid relegation trouble entirely had Phillips, England’s 2021 Player of the Year, been fit for the whole campaign.

In even better news for Marsch, two of his forward options are now on the comeback trail. Patrick Bamford is due to be back on the grass next week, while Tyler Roberts is ‘getting close’ to a return.

In other news, Leeds are targeting this Spurs ace.

Strauss and Cook reignite contest

If Australia needed any convincing about England’s resilience they were given a day-long example as Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook hit magnificent centuries

The Bulletin by Andrew McGlashan28-Nov-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAndrew Strauss roars after reaching his century as England put Australia to the sword•Getty ImagesIf Australia needed any convincing about England’s resilience they were given a day-long example as Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook hit magnificent centuries to give the visitors a golden chance to save the opening Test in Brisbane. The openers added 188 and when Strauss departed for 110, the challenge was taken up by Jonathan Trott, who helped Cook put on a further 121 for the second wicket. Cook ended unbeaten on 132 and England held a lead of 88 when bad light closed in.While few expected England to fold in a heap – they rarely do these days – even fewer would have expected a stumps score of 1 for 309. However, inspired by their captain the tourists set about showing they’d learnt the lessons from their poor first innings and gave Australia a day of toil in the field to match what England had suffered on Saturday. There is still time for the home side to force something on the final day, but nothing in their bowling in this innings has suggested they have the firepower to succeed.Strauss’s 19th Test hundred, and fourth against Australia, arrived from 184 balls when he late cut Xavier Doherty and his aggression against spin was a key part of the innings. He knew England couldn’t block their way to safety, and often used his feet to advance and loft down the ground. Strauss’s century celebration was unusually emotional; it hadn’t been the easiest start to the series after his first-morning failure and this was another example of England’s spirit. The stage was set for him to make it a massive hundred, following Hussey’s lead, but he was beaten in flight by Marcus North and couldn’t regain his ground, stumped by Brad Haddin.Cook reached his landmark with a rasping cut shortly after tea and this match has been an emphatic response from somebody who still had his fair share of doubters coming in to the tour. Shortly afterwards he gave a tough chance to Peter Siddle at fine leg off a top-edged pull, but Siddle couldn’t quite hold on as he dived forward. Trott was also given a reprieve, on 34, when Michael Clarke’s valiant attempt at point failed as the ball slipped out of his finger tips and this time Siddle was the bowler to suffer.England’s opening pair ticked off a few records along their way, including the visitors’ highest stand at the Gabba and the best opening effort by any touring team in Brisbane. They also became England’s most prolific first-wicket duo in Test cricket, although the record was diluted somewhat as they have played more than twice as many innings as the Jack Hobbs-Herbert Sutcliffe pairing they overtook. But that was a minor point in the bigger picture of England trying to claw their way back into the match, which they did with an impressively aggressive approach. The time-runs equation could be vital in the end.Smart Stats

The 188-run stand between Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook is the seventh-highest partnership by an England opening pair in Australia. It is also the second-highest after the 203-run stand between Michael Atherton and Graham Gooch at Adelaide in 1991.

Cook and Strauss became the most prolific opening pair for England in Tests, surpassing the aggregate of Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe.

Strauss’s century was his first in Australia. He made 247 runs in 10 innings on the previous tour.

Cook’s century was his second against Australia and 14th overall. His previous century came at Perth in 2006.

Mitchell Johnson has picked up just 24 wickets in eight Tests since January 14, 2010 at an average of more than 41. At home, he has just one wicket in two Tests.

The century stand between Cook and Jonathan Trott was the tenth for the second wicket for visiting teams in Australia since 2000. It was also the third century stand for the second wicket for England, the highest being 170 between Ian Bell and Cook at Perth in 2006.

Having survived a first-ball review yesterday evening, Strauss gave a commanding display, punctuated with his favourite cuts and drives. However, he was given a significant let-off on 69 when Mitchell Johnson, in the midst of a torrid match, spilled a relatively simple chance at mid-off when Strauss tried to loft Doherty down the ground. There was another moment of alarm when he misjudged a pull on 88 which looped over point then an edge flew between the slips to take him to 96, but Strauss will feel England were owed a little luck. The clearest sign that Strauss’s game was in top order came from his shots through cover, which were a hallmark of his dashing start to Test cricket back in 2004. He latched on to Ben Hilfenhaus and Shane Watson when they over-pitched, while waiting on the back foot for anything short. Though the ball was only 15 overs old when play resumed there was very little assistance for the quick bowlers and Johnson, who was the fourth option used by Ricky Ponting, resorted to trying a bouncer-attack at Strauss, but a slow pitch nullified the threat.Cook showed the same application as he had in the first innings after an early alarm when he sliced a cut between third slip and gully. Most of his other 10 boundaries came out of the middle and he even showed the cover drive, which is rarely seen from him these days. Initially, Cook outscored his captain but normal service was resumed as he dug in but he never became flustered and ticked the scoreboard over. He hacked Doherty through midwicket then cut him for three to move to 97 but had to spend the tea interval sat two short of his hundred, although didn’t have to wait long. It was the first time since 1938 that both England openers had hit Ashes hundreds in the same innings. After Strauss’s aggression towards spin brought his demise, Trott began in positive fashion, which meant the scoring didn’t seize up. He carried England into the lead with an elegant cover-drive off the struggling Johnson and he ensured two set batsmen were ready to face the second new ball when it came at the beginning of the final session.Once again a crucial period loomed but Cook and Trott were equal to the challenge. Hilfenhaus found some swing and there were the two tough chances, yet it wasn’t quite the threat everyone expected. In a sign of desperation Ponting used up his last review when Trott padded up to Hilfenhaus, but the ball was easily missing off stump and Trott’s fifty soon followed as he tucked into Johnson’s wayward offerings. This Test has had too many twists to think the final day will be plain sailing, but if England can hold their nerve it will be another in their recent history of incredible rearguards.

Villa could meet £33.4m Coutinho option

Spanish outlet Sport have provided an update regarding Aston Villa loanee Philippe Coutinho.

The Lowdown: Phillips and Saint-Maximin links

Steven Gerrard is gearing up for his first full season in charge at Villa Park, with a summer shake-up seemingly on the cards.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reports over recent days have claimed that Villa are set to offload both Morgan Sanson and Anwar El Ghazi in the summer, and there have also been plenty of rumours when it comes to incomings.

Villa are believed to be readying a £60m offer for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips and also have their eye on Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin, who is valued at around £50m.

NSWE may well splash the cash over the coming months, including on Coutinho, who joined from Barcelona in January with an option to make the move permanently this summer.

The Latest: Coutinho update

Sport Witness relayed an update from Sport regarding the 29-year-old on Tuesday morning.

They claimed that Villa are ‘very satisfied’ when it comes to the Brazilian, and that financially the Midlands club will have no problems in meeting the €40m (£33.4m) option agreement.

The Verdict: Now for a salary agreement…

There had been talk that Newcastle were looking to land Coutinho, but it’s good to know that Villa chiefs are happy over paying a big-money fee.

All that needs to happen now is for there to be an agreement when it comes to a full-time Villa contract. The playmaker has proven his quality back in the Premier League with seven goal involvements in 11 Villa appearances, but the elephant in the room could be his salary.

Coutinho is currently on 65% of his £300,000-a-week contract, so you’d expect that he may need to take a pay cut in order to sign permanently in the Midlands.

In other news: Newcastle now keen on signing another Villa player as advanced update emerges

Wolves reject Traore bid from Spurs

Having secured deals for the likes of Chiquinho and Hayao Kawabe during the current January transfer window, it seems as though Wolves are now making moves to try and keep hold of one of their current players.

What’s the news?

Speaking live on The Transfer Show on Sky Sports, journalist Kaveh Solhekol revealed that Wolves have rejected an offer of £15m from fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for Adama Traore.

Solhekol then claimed that the Old Gold would be looking at a bid of around £25m in order to consider selling Traore this month.

Having signed the winger for a fee of £18m from Championship club Middlesbrough back in 2018, it’s no surprise that Wolves have rejected an offer which is less than what they paid for him, especially one which would see him join another Premier League team who are only five points ahead of them in the table at this stage of the campaign.

Since joining the Old Gold, Traore has gone on to make 153 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing 18 assists in the process.

Lage will be delighted

Even though Traore only scored one goal in 19 Premier League appearances this season, which came during their recent 3-1 win over Southampton, Wolves manager Bruno Lage will surely be happy that the club have reportedly turned down this offer from Tottenham for the Spain international.

Despite the lack of goal output, the 25-year-old has still been a top performer for his side with an overall season rating of 6.97/10 from WhoScored, making him Wolves’ fourth-highest rated player.

Moving forward, it will be a big boost for Wolves and Lage to have Traore in their squad for the remainder of the season, given the level of performance he has produced for them despite the lack of regular goals and assists.

However, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2023 and the reported lack of intent to sign a new deal at Molineux, it could be worth the club selling him in the next summer transfer window so that they can get a suitable transfer fee for him and also have the time to find the right replacement for him.

Arsenal: Arteta interested in Gakpo

Arsenal are interested in a deal to bring Cody Gakpo to The Emirates in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Dutch media outlet Voetbal International, who claim that Mikel Arteta’s side are currently leading the race for the PSV Eindhoven forward, while the likes of Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester City are also believed to be keeping a close eye on the situation of the 22-year-old – who the Eredivisie side reportedly value at around £42m.

The next Dennis Bergkamp

Considering the sheer amount of potential Gakpo quite clearly possesses, it is easy to see why Mikel Arteta is plotting a move to bring the Netherlands international to Arsenal this summer.

Indeed, over his 20 Eredivisie appearances this season, the £22.5m-rated winger has been in sensational form for PSV, scoring eight goals, providing 13 assists and creating ten big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of three shots and making three key passes per game.

These metrics have seen the £7.4k-per-week forward who journalist Agragami dubbed a “serious talent” average an astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.58, ranking the 22-year-old as the fourth-best player in the top flight of Dutch football.

However, it has not only been in the league that Gakpo has impressed, with the PSV starlet bagging a further eight goals and registering two more assists over 17 appearances in domestic and European cup competitions, taking his haul for the current campaign to a whopping 16 goals and 15 assists over 37 fixtures.

As such, while the two players do not particularly occupy the same position on the pitch – although Gakpo is capable of operating just off a centre-forward, as well as up top himself – should the Dutch prodigy be able to continue his remarkable goalscoring and creative form after a switch to north London this summer, the youngster could well go on to become the Gunners’ next Dennis Bergkamp – a player if the same nationality who bagged 113 goals and registered 94 assists over his 410 appearances for the club.

However, before we get too carried away with the comparisons between Gakpo and both a Dutch and Arsenal legend, Arteta must ensure that he beats off the competition from Bayern, Liverpool and Manchester City for the 22-year-old – as it is clear for all to see that the winger could be a transformative signing for the Spaniard this summer.
