Alex Iwobi’s latest outing divides the Everton supporters

[ad_pod ]

Alex Iwobi has made a decent start to his Everton career – scoring twice in four appearances for the Toffees in all competitions – since his summer arrival from Arsenal.

The 23-year-old found it difficult to make his mark at the weekend, though, as Marco Silva’s side suffered a 3-1 loss at Bournemouth.

According to WhoScored, the summer arrival from Arsenal only managed two dribbles and had a pass success rate of just 75% during his time on the field.

That said, the attacker did have three shots at the Vitality Stadium.

There were those Everton fans who were pleased with what they saw from the Nigeria international despite the disappointment of the final result.

However, a number of others were not impressed by Iwobi’s latest outing on the south coast, and many took to social media to show their displeasure both during and after the Premier League fixture.

A selection of the Twitter reaction is available to view below:

Exclusive: John Hartson backs Neil Lennon to get the best out of Mohamed Elyounoussi

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Celtic striker John Hartson has had his say on Mohamed Elyounoussi, who got his Bhoys career off to the perfect start by picking up a crucial assist on his debut last weekend.

The Norway international joined the Glasgow giants on a season-long loan deal at the end of August following a difficult first season in English football with Southampton – managing only eight starts inthe Premier League – and manager Neil Lennon threw him straight into the starting XI against Hamilton at the weekend.

The 25-year-old played from the left wing and set up the winning goal for James Forrest in a 1-0 victory, and Hartson was clearly impressed with what he saw from the former Basel man.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “I think he’ll be a great signing for Neil Lennon, he’s got that bit of quality in the final third. He’ll be a valuable asset for Celtic no doubt about that.”

The former Wales international went on to add that he believes a player clearly low on confidence at St Mary’s is now working under the perfect person in Lennon, because of the attributes he brings as a manager.

“Neil Lennon’s good at that. He’s good at putting players in that maybe lost their way a little bit, showed some promise and then just lost their way, and then Neil’s great at bringing them in for Celtic and giving them confidence.”

Having scored 30 goals and provided a further 23 assists in 84 matches for Basel, that quality is clearly there to be unlocked and utilised.

Hartson is right, and a real man-manager and motivator could be just what Elyounoussi needs to turn his fortunes around having often been left out of the matchday squad completely at St Mary’s last term.

Lennon is more than capable of doing that, and Celtic could quickly reap the rewards as a result.

Newcastle fans react to Fabian Schar’s impressive goal for Switzerland

[ad_pod ]

He really does have a liking for scoring some impressive goals doesn’t he? Fabian Schar added another fine strike to his collection on Thursday as Switzerland were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland in their EURO 2020 qualifying clash.

The Newcastle man has already shown his penchant for some absolute screamers in his time at St. James’ Park, and it appears he does the exact same for his country too.

The centre-back finished off a flowing team move with a curling strike from just inside the box, and reminded everyone why he could probably play further forward in the team.

After seeing the 27-year-old’s latest beauty, Newcastle fans flooded to Twitter to shower the former Basel man with praise.

Many supporters of the Tyneside club suggested Schar could be the side’s new number nine, and wondered whether they should “chuck him up front” for the next game.

Some Magpies fans insisted if a transfer offer ever came in for the defender, they wouldn’t be happy with “a penny under £1billion”.

West Ham made a deal with the devil in January after Arnautovic demands

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United can’t say they didn’t see this coming.

Marko Arnautovic is a troublemaker and he’s tried to leave the club once before, in January, as he attempted to engineer himself a move to China.

That deal fell through, however, and he was persuaded to sign a new contract at the London Stadium. It contains a £45m release clause.

And yet, here we are, once again analysing Arnautovic’s words as he looks to leave the club.

This time, he has yet to hand in a formal transfer request, despite reports to the contrary.

What has happened instead is this: According to Football FanCast sources, a bid came in from an unnamed Chinese club for €22m (£19.7m) and Arnautovic asked the Hammers to accept it. They didn’t and they don’t intend to; the clause in his contract is not there purely for banter.

And yet, one has to feel that this will be yet another saga involving the Austrian and the club who, really, might well be better off rid of him.

Indeed, it seemed like the Hammers were getting rather a good deal in January. They wanted to sell Arnautovic and buy Maxi Gomez from Celta Vigo. It would have worked out perfectly.

The deal, as stated, didn’t happen, though, and they were saddled with a white elephant, a player with a penchant for the dramatic and the ridiculous, both on and off the pitch.

He is a talented player, there is no doubt about that, and he scored 11 goals in all competitions last season. He also went 11 games without scoring after the transfer kerfuffle and ended the season with three goals in two games, just in time for the window to reopen. Coincidence?

He is volatile and his agent, who is also his brother, simply cannot resist shopping him around.

Danijel Arnautovic released a statement in January asking the club to let his sibling go, and he claimed earlier this month “you can change everything” in regards to the player’s future.

That has certainly happened.

And yet West Ham should, really, have known this was the endgame. Yes, he signed a new deal in January, but even then this writer wrote that the move weakened the club’s hierarchy, as they gave the striker a pay rise while effectively agreeing to sell him in the summer.

This is not the time, then, for David Gold and David Sullivan to act indignant at the fact that another bid has come in and, shock horror, Arnautovic wants to go.

It is fair to say that the offer isn’t high enough; the bid in January was £30m.

Perhaps the Hammers would do business at that sort of price, but this offer feels like it is designed to turn Arnautovic and his brother’s heads.

They appear to be after a get rich quick scheme and a move to the Chinese Super League would almost certainly see the Irons’ star’s pay packet increase, with Oscar and Graziano Pelle’s respective moves to China underlining the beaming financial incentives for moving East.

The conclusion, though, is that the club brought this on themselves. They had the chance to cash in at the turn of the year and they opted against it.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on West Ham United.

Arsenal Transfer Roundup: Tierney top target, Claude-Maurice chooses Bundesliga, Xhaka on Atleti radar

[ad_pod ]

With a third of the summer transfer window having been and gone, it remains to be seen what wonders Unai Emery can come up with on a shoestring transfer budget. Today’s Gunners transfer roundup includes an update on a Scottish international, a blow in regards to a French youngster and foreign interest in one of the club’s midfielders.

Tierney is top target

According to the Daily Mail, Emery has identified Celtic’s Kieran Tierney as his number one left-back target. Tierney, however, is under contract with the Scottish champions until 2023, and the Emirates outfit may need to part with a fee in the region of £20m to secure his signature.

Claude-Maurice prefers Mönchengladbach

Despite strong interest in the player, Arsenal are set to miss out on 21-year-old Lorient star Alexis Claude-Maurice according to L’Equipe via Sky Sports. Earlier reports had suggested that the forward was prepared to reject as many as ten clubs to move to north London. However, Claude-Maurice has now confirmed that he wants to sign for Borussia Mönchengladbach instead.

Atletico after Xhaka

The Mirror is reporting that Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Granit Xhaka. The Spanish club are looking for a replacement for Rodri, who is in talks with Manchester City, and the 6 foot midfielder is seen as a good option. Inter Milan are also believed to be pursuing in the Swiss international but Arsenal don’t want to sell.

Leeds Transfer Roundup: Clarke returns on loan, fee set for Costa, McCarron joins

Clarke joins Tottenham… and returns to Leeds on loan

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Jack Clarke has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Leeds United, and he will now immediately rejoin the Whites on loan for next season. “It was a no-brainer to come back and the option was always there. I think it will be a lot better for my progression to spend another year here and I didn’t feel right leaving with how last season finished,” said Clarke upon his return.

Loan fee for Costa revealed

Image: The brilliant Jed Steer photo that shows just how far he’s come

[ad_pod ]

Before Dean Smith walked through the doors at Aston Villa, not many will have been tipping them for promotion.

The same could be said of their chances after New Year.

Yet, at Wembley on Monday afternoon the Villans sealed an emotional return to the top flight. Managed and captained by Villa fans, they achieved a stunning accomplishment given where the club was last summer.

One of the focal points of the team over the last few months has been Jed Steer, someone who typifies this team in abundance.

He is full of resilience and determination, driven by a will to succeed, and this was undoubtedly the cherry on top of the cake for the goalkeeper.

As the match reached its end, every ball that came near him was taken into his clutches and held onto like a newborn baby. He was never going to let Villa down.

It’s been a season of highs and lows for the 26-year-old. At the beginning of the term he was demoted to third-choice goalkeeper after the arrivals of Orjan Nyland and Andre Morreira.

He was then sent out on loan to Charlton.

Therefore, to see an image of Steer lifting the play-off trophy would have been unthinkable. No Villa fan would have expected it after he was shipped out to League One almost a year ago.

However, Smith made it possible. Recalling him on the final day of 2018 was a genius move and he’s more than repaid the faith.

Had it not been for the ‘keeper’s heroics in the penalty shoot-out at the Hawthorns, Villa may not have now been preparing for life in the Premier League.

There have been some remarkable stories to come out of Villa Park this season, but Steer’s is up there as one of the best.
