Celtic: Rogic in poor form vs Hibs

Celtic dropped crucial points in the race to be crowned SPFL champions in May on Sunday as they were held to a goalless stalemate by Hibernian on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were in frustrating form as their poor week on the pitch only continued at Easter Road despite enjoying the vast majority of the ball.

The Hoops struggled to create too many clear cut chances and in hindsight, it is easy to say that the Australian got his team selection wrong.

However, in selecting his fellow countryman, Tom Rogic, question marks had to be raised.

The attacking midfielder has produced so many golden moments for Celtic but over the last few years, his performances have been delivered with far too much inconsistency.

Once described as “majestic” and as a “ballerina” by ACSOM’s Kevin Graham, he was anything but that against Hibs this weekend.

In fact, he was rather lethargic and struggled to ever really produce the goods from an attacking point of view.

The 29-year-old’s statistical numbers make for pretty grim reading with the Aussie attempting just 16 passes throughout his 59 minutes on the pitch, of which only 11 were completed.

For a player who loves to get on the ball and dictate play in a creative manner, it was a particularly alarming statistic.

Furthermore, Rogic lost possession on ten occasions from his 27 touches of the ball, which meant he ceded possession once every 2.7 touches in a woeful display going forward.

If that wasn’t enough, he wasn’t good enough defensively either. He won just 50% of his duels and gave two fouls away.

As a result of his display in Edinburgh, it wouldn’t be a surprise he does get the boot for their next clash. With January signing Matt O’Riley waiting in the wings, he certainly needs to pick up his act or face the axe from Postecoglou.

AND in other news, Postecoglou could unearth Celtic’s next Dembele by unleashing 17 y/o “wonderkid”…

Celtic: Ange must axe Rogic vs Bodo/Glimt

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side return to European action on Thursday evening, with Bodo/Glimt making the trip from Norway for the first leg of the Europa Conference League play-off meeting between the two sides.

However, while the Bhoys head into the fixture on the back of a 4-0 Scottish Cup win over Raith Rovers, as well as the 56-year-old’s outfit currently being on a run of 17 games unbeaten in all competitions, the Hoops boss was far from pleased with his side’s performance last time out.

Indeed, the Greek-Australian coach stated after the victory: “[The] first half was pretty poor. Obviously, when I’m making so many changes it’s going to affect the rhythm of the team and the cohesion but even within that I thought we weren’t great first half.

“We didn’t really work hard enough, didn’t move the ball quick enough, second half obviously was a lot better and it was good to get through to the next round.

“It’s not about taking opportunities [for the players who came in], it’s not like they’re going to be banished into some unknown place after today.

“It’s just that we’ve got certain standards about how hard we want to work and the kind of football we want to play, how quickly we want to move the ball.”

As such, with Postecoglou undoubtedly hoping that his side can kick-start a European cup run with a victory over Bodo/Glimt tomorrow night, it would appear highly likely that the 56-year-old will make sweeping changes to the side that lined up against Rovers on Sunday – with one player who looks to be a prime candidate for the chop being Tom Rogic.

Postecoglou must axe Rogic

Despite having impressed over his 20 Premiership appearances so far this season – scoring five goals, registering six assists, creating nine big chances for his teammates and averaging a Sofascore match rating of 7.12 – the 29-year-old was one of the players who was far from his best against the Championship outfit last weekend.

Indeed, while the £1.35m-rated attacking midfielder did provide Liam Scales with an assist for Celtic’s opener, he also ceded possession far too cheaply on a number of occasions over his 69 minutes on the pitch – with the Scottish Daily Express awarding the Australia international a disappointing six in their player ratings.

However, aside from the lacklustre display of the £15k-per-week player, who Brendan Rogers claimed “could play in a tuxedo,” the fact that Postecoglou now has the option of Matt O’Riley in the middle of the park is another big reason why Rogic should be dropped on Thursday.

Indeed, since his £1.5m move to Parkhead in January, the 21-year-old has been in breathtaking form over his five Premiership appearances for the Hoops, having already scored one goal, registered three assists and created three big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.6 shots and making a remarkable four key passes per fixture.

These returns have seen the £405k-rated former England U18 international average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.76, ranking him as the third-best player in the entirety of the Scottish top flight.

As such, while the likes of James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and Stephen Welsh also look likely to drop out of Postecoglou’s starting XI on Thursday night, the 56-year-old simply must replace Rogic with O’Riley against Bodo/Glimt – as the latter looks as if he could genuinely be one of the most exciting talents Scottish football has seen for a long while.

Celtic: Giakoumakis, Bitton and Forrest ineffective vs Motherwell

Celtic backed up their Glasgow Derby triumph in the week with an impressive 4-0 win over Motherwell on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou’s side once again scored three times in the first 45 minutes, with Reo Hatate and Liel Abada picking up where they left off on Wednesday to combine for the opener.

The returning Tom Rogic netted a brace before the interval to put the result beyond doubt and Daizen Maeda scored in the second half, with the Hoops now four points clear of Rangers who play later this afternoon.

However, not every Celtic player had an afternoon to remember despite another three points. We’ve delved into the numbers from statistical experts SofaScore to analyse the Hoops’ three worst players to have featured for at least 45 minutes, who will perhaps now be looking over their shoulders regarding their place in the XI.

Giorgos Giakoumakis – 6.7/10

Giakoumakis was given another chance to lead the line but failed to get on the scoresheet once again. The summer signing lost 13 of his 21 duels both on the ground and in the air and gave possession away on 11 occasions.

The forward also committed five fouls, completed just eight passes and registered one shot all afternoon.

Nir Bitton – 6.8/10

Bitton returned to the matchday squad following his red card against Dundee United and came on for Hatate at the interval. However, he appeared to struggle in stages, losing possession five times.

The versatile midfielder also lost half of his ground duels in the second 45 minutes (3/6), made one foul and failed to register an interception.

James Forrest – 6.5/10

Forrest replaced Abada at half-time but also struggled to make an impact in the second half. The winger wasn’t as involved as he may have liked, having just 25 touches of the ball.

He missed a big chance to get on the scoresheet and also failed to make a key pass, giving up possession twice. He would’ve been hoping to give Postecoglou a selection headache, however, he may have to settle for a place on the bench against Aberdeen in the week.

Kalvin Phillips joining Man Utd ruled out

It is ‘inconceivable’ that Kalvin Phillips will trade Leeds United for Manchester United at any point in the future, according to journalist David Anderson.

The Lowdown: Phillips linked with United move

Phillips has become arguably Leeds’ most important player during the Marcelo Bielsa era, maturing into a formidable presence for both club and country.

England’s reigning Player of the Year’s stock has never been higher and it could be that the Whites have to battle off interest in him during the summer transfer window.

Phillips has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, which given the rivalry between the two clubs, could cause huge controversy.

The Latest: Journalist laughs off idea

Writing for the Mirror, however, Anderson has claimed that the 26-year-old will simply not entertain the idea of heading to Old Trafford, such are his Leeds ties.

While a move elsewhere isn’t ruled out, it is stated that Phillips ‘could never bring himself to play for the Reds’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Big boost for Leeds

This sums up the level of loyalty Phillips has with his boyhood club and it is undoubtedly good news that he won’t be moving to Manchester, which would be a tough transfer to stomach for Whites fans.

Not only that but it could also affect the midfielder’s great legacy at Elland Road – he has been hailed as ‘amazing’ by Jose Mourinho – as was the case when Alan Smith signed for the Red Devils back in 2004.

While it would be hard to begrudge Phillps a move to a Champions League outfit eventually, the report states that he is ‘happy’ for the time being and him staying put for years to come would be an almighty boost for everyone associated with the club.

Everton eye Tottenham ace Ndombele

Some Everton fans have been left buzzing over transfer news involving Tanguy Ndombele.

Speaking live on Tuesday’s episode of Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show (via The Transfer Centre – Tue 17:24pm), journalist Kaveh Solhekol revealed that the Goodison Park outfit are now among a number of clubs interested in signing the 25-year-old on loan for the rest of the season, although he is more likely to return to France, with Paris Saint-Germain in the frame.

Of course, Ndombele has largely been a disappointment since arriving at Tottenham, having only scored six goals and supplied five assists in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

However, there is talent there, enough for Spurs to have made him their all-time record signing in 2019, and he could add a shrewd option to Everton’s midfield.

He currently commits fewer fouls per league game than Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and Andre Gomes, and also averages more dribbles, accurate passes and through balls per match than the Everton trio (WhoScored), suggesting that he would slot right in to the middle of the park.

Also, the deal would only be a loan, so if it does not work out, the Toffees can just send him straight back to north London without being locked into a huge financial commitment.

Sky Sports drop Spence to Spurs update

Taking to Twitter, sharing a piece by Sky Sports, their reporter Lyall Thomas has broken some news on a brand new Tottenham Hotspur target in full-back Djed Spence.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye new right-backs…

Strengthening at right-back is one of manager Antonio Conte’s major priorities for this January transfer window with the club in talks to sign Wolves star Adama Traore (Matt Law).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They aim to convert the Spain international into a RWB for Conte’s system and he isn’t the only defender on that side they have been linked with this window.

Tottenham have also made an approach for Peterborough United full-back Benjamin Mensah as one for the future with news now emerging of yet another promising name on Fabio Paratici’s transfer radar.

The Latest: Spurs could move for Spence…

According to Thomas, Spurs are ‘interested in a deal’ to sign Middlesborough wing-back Spence – who is currently on loan at fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest for the remainder of the season.

Upon potentially signing the 21-year-old, Tottenham would have to immediately loan him back to Forest, but regardless, the Sky journalist says Spurs ‘could make a move’ before January 31.

The Verdict: Exciting player…

Spence has shone on a temporary spell at the City Ground this season, leaving little wonder he has now attracted Spurs’ interest.

The starlet has been a fixture in Steve Cooper’s side this season, with Boro boss Chris Wilder even taking note of his player from afar and calling him ‘outstanding’.

Making the third-most interceptions per 90 out of any Forest regular with more than five starts (1.6, WhoScored), Spence has also shone going forward.

Indeed, out of all of the English second tier side’s players with over two full starts, Spence has also averaged the most completed dribbles per 90 (WhoScored) – highlighting his obvious threat and how he could be an asset for Conte in future seasons.

Aston Villa must secure Aaron Ramsey deal

Now that Aston Villa have got their January transfer window business off to a flyer with a loan deal for Barcelona and former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, the Midlands club now have three-and-a-half more weeks to secure any other new players that Steven Gerrard thinks would improve his squad.

One man who Villa’s sporting director Johan Lange could look to sign in a similar deal to their one for Coutinho is Juventus and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Having been linked with a move for the Welshman recently, this could be the ideal time for Villa to swoop for him now that a deal has been agreed for Coutinho, and the fact that Juventus manager Max Allegri has labelled Ramsey an “outgoing player” from the Italian club this month.

With a total of 262 appearances in the Premier League under his belt during his time at Arsenal, with 40 goals and 51 assists to his name, the 31-year-old could offer Villa a serious amount of top-flight experience – just like Coutinho – if he were to follow in the Brazilian’s footsteps and return to England this month.

Given how Villa have two young midfielders in their squad in the shape of Jacob Ramsey and Carney Chukwuemeka, these are two players that could benefit from having a player like the Wales international – who is currently picking up a hefty wage of £175k-per-week according to Salary Sport – alongside them as a mentor.

Taking into account how the 31-year-old – who has been likened to Frank Lampard in the past by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in regards to his style of play – has only made five appearances for Juventus so far this season, it’s easy to see why Allegri sees no place for him in his squad and why a return to the Premier League could be tempting for the Welshman if he would be guaranteed regular playing time at Villa Park.

Moving forward, with the status of Ramsey’s current situation at Juventus now made clear by Allegri, Villa should definitely explore the possibility of securing a move for the midfielder, either on a loan deal or a potential permanent transfer to see if he can slot into Gerrard’s squad and help the team progress.
