Cricinfo staff26-Sep-2008Alan Isaac has been appointed the new chairman of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), replacing Sir John Anderson, who stepped down earlier this month. Isaac has been acting chairman since Anderson’s retirement.Justin Vaughan, the New Zealand Cricket chief executive, hailed Isaac as having a deep knowledge of cricket in New Zealand. “Sir John has left big shoes to fill, but we are sure that Alan will be an excellent new chairman,” he said. “Cricket is witnessing explosive growth, with new competitions backed by burgeoning media interest. It really is an exciting time for the sport.”Isaac has been on the NZC board for 18 years and has extensive experience in corporate governance, corporate management and commercial accounting. “I was very happy being on the board under Sir John but I guess there was an opportunity when he said he was stepping down to assume the role,” he told the .”It’s about keeping an eye on the risks and challenges for NZC with regard to the development of the game and Twenty20, and the impact they might have,” he said. “If you look at what’s happening with other sports, privately owned teams are commonplace, so it’s something we need to be aware of, and the commercial value associated with them is significant.”He retired as the Chair of KPMG in March 2006 after 35 years with the company. He is also a member of the New Zealand Golf Board and of the Board of Rugby New Zealand 2011 Limited which is in charge of handling the rugby World Cup in 2011 in New Zealand.

Liverpool linked to Franck Kessie

Liverpool are plotting a move for AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie as the club continue to search for Gini Wijnaldum’s replacement.

What’s the story?

The Reds will reportedly offer the 24-year-old a deal worth £7m-a-year in an attempt to lure the box-to-box midfielder away from San Siro, according to Italian outlet Sports Mediaset (as reported by the Daily Mirror).

However, the report claims that Jurgen Klopp and co. face a tough battle to secure Kessie’s signature, with Milan set to offer a £5m salary in order to try and keep the Ivory Coast international in Serie A.

Kessie has just one year remaining on his current contract with the Rossoneri, and talks over an extension are thought to be at an impasse.

Jurgen Klopp will love him

Following the departure of Wijnaldum, several well-known stars have been linked with a move to Anfield as Klopp attempts to adequately replace the Netherlands international.

And bringing in Kessie is a deal that makes sense for multiple reasons. The stocky dynamo has cultivated an enviable reputation during his time in Italian football, and his playing style appears to naturally suit Liverpool’s preferred approach.

The Milan ace’s mix of pace, energy, technical ability and eye for goal make him the ideal fit for Klopp’s preferred gegenpressing setup, meaning a move to English shores could be on the cards.

His impressive performances for Milan in recent years have earned several plaudits, including ex-striker Antonio Cassano, who even compared him to a previous Premier League great.

“I want Kessie in my team, he scores, he assists, he has personality, he has quality, he doesn’t lose the ball, he is intelligent. I’m watching him carefully, against Roma, he was devastating,” he said (via MilanLive).

“He reminds me of the Yaya Touré of the best times. He is a different player, but in terms of impact, he is holding Milan’s midfield alone.”

Kessie really caught the eye last season, bagging 13 goals and providing six assists in 37 top-flight appearances, achieving a highly respectable 7.15 WhoScored rating along the way.

Whether the combative midfielder can be tempted to join Liverpool remains to be seen, but the £49.5m-rated maestro has the assets required to slot straight into Klopp’s system, and could help propel the Anfield outfit back to the summit of English football.

And, in other news…Time’s up: Klopp must ruthlessly axe £10m LFC flop this summer, he’s not good enough

Taylor powers West Indies to convincing win

West Indies cherished their first ever Twenty20 international with a 75-run rout over Ireland at the Rush Cricket Club in Dublin on Friday

Cricinfo staff28-Jun-2008
ScorecardWest Indies cherished their first Twenty20 international with a 75-run rout over Ireland at the Rush Cricket Club in Dublin on Friday. The win was set-up by Stefanie Taylor’s 49-ball 90 and Stacy-Ann King’s 52, which propelled West Indies to an imposing 184. The target proved well out of reach for the home side, who managed 109 for 7 in their allotted overs.Ireland tasted early success after sending West Indies in, getting rid of the captain Nadine George for 1. However, they struggled to effect more breakthroughs as Taylor and Juliana Nero added 58 for the second wicket which set the platform for the biggest partnership of the match – 108 – between Taylor and King. Taylor smashed 12 fours and a six in her knock while King carted fives sixes and three fours in her 34-ball innings. Taylor, however, fell ten short of what would have been the first international Twenty20 century by a West Indies batsman when she was dismissed by Melissa Scott-Hayward, the right-arm seamer.Ireland were pegged back when Danielle Small removed the openers early, before Kirbyina Alexander took three middle-order wickets with her medium pace in an economical four-over spell to further tighten the noose. No batsman managed to cross fifty, with Cecilia Joyce’s 41 being the highest.West Indies sign off their tour of Ireland with the third ODI on Sunday before heading to Netherlands.

Laxman left out of Indian World Cup squad

With the storm of the contracts crisis still hanging over the heads of the Indian cricketers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the national selection committee has selected the Indian squad of 15 to travel to South

Anand Vasu30-Dec-2002With the storm of the contracts crisis still hanging over the heads of the Indian cricketers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the national selection committee has selected the Indian squad of 15 to travel to South Africa for the World Cup in February 2003.The talking point was the omission of VVS Laxman, who was replaced by Dinesh Mongia. This comes in the wake of widespread speculation that Mongia would in fact pip Laxman at the post for a place, thanks to his sharper skills in the field. Mongia was not selected in the 16-member squad that is currently playing a seven-match one-day series in New Zealand.Laxman has scored 1240 runs at an average of just 27.55 in the 50 one-dayers he has played so far, scoring just one century. His strike rate, a mere 67.02 runs per hundred balls, has also gone against him.As expected, young stumper Parthiv Patel has been selected as wicket-keeping cover for Rahul Dravid, who is expected to don the gloves in a majority of the games to enable the team to field an extra bowler or batsman as required. Dravid had a disappointing game behind the stumps against New Zealand at Napier recently and the selectors would have taken this into consideration in naming Patel as a reserve stumper.Veteran campaigners Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath will also heave a sigh of relief when they find their names on the list of 15 for the World Cup.However, none of these players has signed the Participating Nations Agreement (PNA) and cannot take part in the World Cup unless they do so within the stipulated time limit. If any player fails to sign the agreement, the selectors will be forced to name a replacement.Squad: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Dinesh Mongia, Parthiv Patel, Sanjay Bangar, Ajit Agarkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Patrick Vieira’s appointment

Crystal Palace have officially appointed Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year deal, as reported by BBC.

Moving into 2021/22, the Eagles finally have some assurance over their managerial situation following nearly two months without clarity after Roy Hodgson declared his intention to leave Selhurst Park [cpfc.co.uk].

Frank Lampard, Steve Cooper and Lucien Favre were all previously front-runners for the position, but 45-year-old Vieira has been chosen as the man to lead the Eagles into the new campaign and possibly beyond [BBC].

Firstly, he will need to negotiate the tricky task of replacing the 22 first team players who departed after their contracts expired at the end of last season [Tribal Football].

Despite the challenges ahead, many Crystal Palace supporters took to Twitter to voice their delight as they embark on a new journey under Vieira’s stewardship.

CPFC fans react:

Replying to the club’s official Twitter channel, here is how some fans summarised their feelings on the Vieira appointment, with one supporter describing it as “great” news:

Fry makes big Kenwright claim after Ancelotti exit - Exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry insists that Bill Kenwright will have been left absolutely gutted by Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to leave the club.

The Italian is now back in Spain with Real Madrid, preparing for the 2021/22 season.

Ancelotti only spent one full season at the club, overseeing a 10th-placed finish in the Premier League, and failing to win a trophy despite significant backing from the board; he brought in the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan, and Ben Godfrey last summer.

Fry insists, though, that Kenwright would have been willing to put his hand in his pocket and back Ancelotti to the hilt this summer if he had remained at the club, with the Toffees aiming for a top-four finish.

Now, though, they are hunting for a new boss to replace the former Chelsea boss, and reports suggest that they could well turn to Nuno Espirito Santo, who left Wolves at the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Fry said: “Everton is a different kettle of fish now. Bill is a real football man, he’s marvellous, he has got backing. He will be bitterly, bitterly, bitterly disappointed that the guy’s left him.

“He really will. I know for a fact he was willing to back him.

“They were willing to back him to the hilt in this window to, again, give them a chance of getting in the Champions League, they’re very ambitious.

“That would have hurt Bill and everyone at Everton, but I think it’ll just make them more determined to get the right boss in to take them forward.”

Celtic: Leeds United open talks with Hoops defender Leo Hjelde

Leeds United have opened talks for Celtic central-defender Leo Hjelde, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Celtic face mini-exodus ahead of 2021/22

As 2021/22 rolls around the corner in Glasgow, the Hoops face the prospect of multiple senior exits as they re-shuffle the pack ahead of next campaign.

Odsonne Edouard has been heavily linked with moves to Leicester and West Ham United respectively, whilst Kristoffer Ajer has been targeted by Newcastle United and RB Leipzig [Chronicle Live].

However, another talented young star could be the first casualty of Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic reign as recent rumours come to light.

The Latest: Leeds United open talks with the talented Norwegian

After links earlier in the month, Hjelde’s exit is edging closer as the Yorkshire giants are now ‘negotiating’ a deal as they look to recruit more talent to their youth sides, according to a Leeds United source [Football Insider].

His contract at Parkhead is due to expire in 12-months, whilst the chances of Celtic being able to keep him are diminishing rapidly.

Leeds United are confident of landing Hjelde on a lucrative contract, citing his ‘enormous’ potential and room to develop as a player under Bielsa as cornerstone factors of his pursuit [Football Insider], with the Whites’ scouts apparently ‘blown away’ by his abilities at such a young age.

The Verdict: Losing ‘the next Van Dijk’ would come as a bitter blow for Celtic

Undoubtedly, losing a premium talent such as the Norwegian Under-18 international would not go down well with the Celtic support.

Enjoying a commendable debut introduction to senior football in 2020/21, Hjelde spent the second half of the season on loan at Ross County making 12 appearances; scoring once [Transfermarkt].

Eventually helping the Staggies to Scottish Premiership survival [BBC], then manager John Hughes was so enthralled by his contribution that he labelled the defender ‘the next Virgil van Dijk’ when talking about his potential upward trajectory at the Hoops [Daily Record].

With his best years well ahead of him, Celtic should aim to offer Hjelde a first-team pathway to entice him to extend his stay at Parkhead.

Despite this, advances from a Premier League side like Leeds United may be too tempting for the starlet to turn down, so it may already be too late for Celtic to keep Hjelde in Glasgow.

In other news, Celtic have offered a shock lifeline to a forgotten ace.
