Celtic ‘step up’ Maeda efforts

As per reliable reporter Mark Palmer of The Sunday Times, an exciting transfer claim has now dropped involving star J-League striker Daizen Maeda and Celtic.

The Lowdown: Ange eyes move…

Speaking ahead of their clash with St Johnstone in the SPFL today, Ange Postecoglou was forthright on the subject of fresh faces at Parkhead in January.

Indeed, the Hoops head coach revealed that the process of identifying transfer targets mid-season has already started and hints Celtic ‘will’ make signings ( via Sky Sports).

Now, an exciting claim has dropped on who could be making his way to Glasgow.

The Latest: Hoops ‘step up’ Maeda chase…

As per Palmer of The Times, sharing his article on Twitter, Celtic now ‘step up efforts’ to sign ‘another’ J-League star in the January window.

After snapping up Kyogo Furuhashi in the summer, well placed sources in Japan have told The Times and Palmer they expect a move to be completed for clinical Asian forward Maeda.

Scoring 18 goals and assisting three others over this current campaign so far, Celtic are apparently confident they can sign the 24-year-old for Ange.

The Verdict: Get it done…

His ruthless goalscoring record is just one reason why Ange simply must make a move for Maeda.

The Japan international has also been labelled a ‘stone cold killer’ by members of the press in his country (via Celts Are Here) and he could be exactly the kind of player to inject even more quality at Celtic.

If they are to re-gain their SPFL dominance back from arch rivals Rangers, signing Maeda would certainly be a step in the right direction.

West Brom fans slam Robert Snodgrass

Many West Brom fans have been slamming the performance of Robert Snodgrass in their 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Albion at The Hawthorns, as Grady Diangana’s strike midway through the second half was only enough to gain a point from the game after Josh Coburn had given the visitors the lead before the interbal.

It was also a match where Snodgrass struggled to make any impact, as he failed to record a single shot on target, dribble or key pass, and was also unsuccessful with all 10 crosses that he attempted (SofaScore).

He lost out on seven of his duels and also lost possession of the ball on 14 separate occasions in total (SofaScore) as the 34-year-old generally struggled in the middle of the park.

West Brom fans slam Snodgrass

These Baggies supporters on Twitter slammed Snodgrass’ performance, with a couple of West Brom fans claiming that the Scot was ‘poor’ yesterday:

“Robinson and Grant awful. Snodgrass 3 poor games in a row. Townsend CAN’T PLAY IN A BACK 3!!! We can all see it except for VI! But Kipre may have nailed a starting spot and Molumby impressed again. Biggest things, we’re not creating chances and there’s no clear style of play now.”

“At this point it may be cheaper to find a pleasant care home for Snodgrass”

“Can Snodgrass cross? Jesus wept, his set pieces bar one good one have been dire.”

“Moving Townsend to LCB to shoehorn Reach in is ridiculous. To not play TGH after Wednesday is very poor too. Defence continues to be a liability, Snodgrass poor, Robinson is not the man to play central to hold the ball up, Looks lost in that role. This is awful.”

“I’m sick to death of Snodgrass hitting the first man. Also, Bartley and Kipre in cahoots at who can be worse.”

“Exactly, I made that point after the Hull game. If two of our supposedly most technical players like Robinson and Snodgrass can’t pick a pass, how are we supposed to play good football?”

Leeds’ Charlie Cresswell was superb vs Fulham

In the end, Leeds United secured their passage into the next round of the Carabao Cup after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory over Fulham on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side weren’t at their vintage best at Craven Cottage, but thanks to some heroics from goalkeeper Illan Meslier, they managed to move onto the fourth round of the competition.

But while Meslier will no doubt take some of the headlines for stepping up in that crucial moment during the spot-kicks, it was arguably Charlie Cresswell’s performance at the back that really stood out the most.

The 19-year-old academy starlet proved exactly why he appears set for a big future in the game at Elland Road, matching everything that Fulham tried to throw him with and even showing a superb range of passing too.

As per Sofascore, he won the most duels of any player on the pitch (12 of 18), and made the most interceptions, clearances and blocked shots of any of his Leeds teammates too.

That’s not to mention how good he looked in possession too, registering a game-high 121 touches – yes, you read that correctly – and 87 passes, while only Kalvin Phillips was ahead of him for most completed long balls.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him an eight, saying: “Excellent display from the centre-back, who slotted in seamlessly to the defence. Was happy to mix it physically with the Fulham forwards and just as comfortable raking long passes over the top for his team-mates. Never looked troubled.”

Speaking about Cresswell earlier last season, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan was glowing in his praise about the 6 foot starlet, saying: “He is the future, he’s one for the future. At that centre-half position he’s got great attributes, he’s very calm on the ball, a great size to him, he’s quick, he can head, he can pass. He’s the modern-day, young centre-half.”

And, after pictures emerged of him in pre-season training looking more physically built than ever before, Whelan waxed lyrical about the kind of progress the teenager has made and touted him for big things.

He added: “From the pictures, you can see he’s put in a lot of work, a lot of effort. He’s taking his role at the club very seriously about pushing Koch, Cooper, Llorente and Struijk. That’s good to see. I want to see that from young players.

“Cresswell, when he played last season in the EFL Cup game he was fantastic. He was a standout and he’s definitely one to the future. When you look at him now in stature, he doesn’t look like he’d be fazed coming up against any bigger centre-forwards. He is an absolute beast.”

These rave reviews, and his performance yesterday showed exactly why he could be a major player for Leeds in the coming years, and he absolutely stole the show for the Whites in their Carabao Cup clash against Fulham.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star is keen on a contract extension at Elland Road…

Leeds United’s Dan James shone against Belarus

While Patrick Bamford may have been the man Leeds United fans had their eyes on during the weekend, it was their new summer signing Dan James who produced a more impressive display.

The Wales international joined Marcelo Bielsa’s side from Manchester United on transfer deadline day, and while he didn’t get on the score-sheet in the 3-2 comeback win over Belarus on Sunday, he more than played his part.

James came up with the decisive assist for Gareth Bale’s late winner that kept Wales’ hopes of qualification for the World Cup alive and was a constant thorn for the opposition defence with his tireless running and movement.

As per Sofascore, he completed the most dribbles out of any player on the pitch with four (three more than the rest of his team combined) and provided three key passes too (the same amount as the rest of his teammates).

And while he was a creative force, James’ work rate was equally impressive, winning a monstrous ten duels (only Ben Davies won more), and also making a whopping five tackles too (a joint team-high).

It was the kind of energetic and live-wire performance that surely caught Bielsa’s attention from watching at home, and would have left him drooling at the prospect of finally getting the chance to work with him – especially considering how long he’s wanted him for.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, Phil Hay said: “That’s a question for Bielsa because Bielsa’s forever interested in Dan James, and you probably remember last summer that before they did the deal for Raphinha, they were looking into the possibility of bringing Dan James in on loan from Manchester United.

“I don’t think it was ever really a possibility because it didn’t seem as though Solskjaer wanted him to go. I get the feeling that Bielsa will consistently be interested in Dan James because he was very big on him when Leeds nearly got him from Swansea.”

His former teammate at United, Andreas Pereira, called the 23-year-old as “explosive and so fast” in an interview with the club’s official website last season, and you saw every bit of that against Belarus.

All the raw ingredients of pace, work rate and intensity were all there and that is exactly why Bielsa would have been very excited to see James at work against Belarus at the weekend.

Meanwhile, this Leeds United transfer target is now set for contract talks…

Bransgrove wants end of international Twenty20s

Rod Bransgrove, the high-profile Hampshire chairman, has outlined several radical proposals, including having two divisions in Test cricket and cutting down the number of Tests, to revitalise the game’s longest format. He also advocated banning international Twenty20s and making ODIs 40-over-a-side games.”I would reduce the number of Tests and remove all the meaningless games between aspiring countries and major Test nations,” he told the . “They are degrading the game; nobody is interested in them, nobody goes to them and nobody benefits.”To ensure more competitive Tests, Bransgrove wanted two divisions with six teams each. He mooted that relegation and promotion would be decided by an annual play-off between the top-ranked team from the second division and the bottom-ranked one in the first division. He also recommended getting rid of international Twenty20s and having three major domestic Twenty20 leagues – the IPL, the English (and Welsh) Premier League, and a southern hemisphere competition – with windows in the international calendar to allow the game’s leading players to participate. “The EPL would be jointly owned by all 18 counties and MCC (and, in part, by other important stakeholders such as ECB) but will be made up of eight or nine city-based franchises using the largest stadia to maximise revenues,” he said. “Each of these competitions would run for four to five weeks when there is no international cricket so all players can take part.”As for the game’s other major format, one-day internationals, Bransgrove felt that reducing them to 40-over affairs would “remove the boring middle 10 overs” as well as reduce interference from bad light.Bransgrove is expected to echo these views at an ECB conference next Monday that was called by board chairman Giles Clarke to discuss the future of Test cricket.

Liverpool fans happy with Nat Phillips news

A number of Liverpool supporters are happy with the news that Nat Phillips is set to start the Reds’ upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Norwich City.

Jurgen Klopp’s side continued their impressive start to the season on Saturday afternoon, beating Crystal Palace 3-0 at Anfield in the Premier League. It means Liverpool have dropped just two points and conceded only once in their opening five league matches, suggesting that a title challenge is on the cards.

Attention switches to Carabao Cup commitments on Tuesday evening, however, as the Reds make the trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich, where they won 3-0 at the start of the league season just over a month ago.

Klopp is expected to make a number of changes for the game, and according to The Athletic’s James Pearce [via Anfield Edition on Twitter], Phillips will make his first start of the season against the Canaries.

The 24-year-old had a prolonged spell in the first team in 2020/21, a defensive injury crisis helping to propel him into the side, and he repaid Klopp’s faith with some tremendous performances.

Taylor has a shocker as Forest lose again

Nottingham Forest’s disastrous start to their 2021/22 Championship campaign continued on Saturday, as Chris Hughton’s side suffered their fourth league defeat in as many matches.

Starting the season slowly has become something of a trait for Forest in recent seasons, with a Sabri Lamouchi led side also falling to defeat in their opening four games last time out.

However, with Dane Murphy being appointed as the club’s new CEO earlier this summer, and subsequently the club being linked with a number of exciting young talents, things had appeared to be on the up at the City Ground ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Despite this, results on the pitch have been extremely disappointing – to put it lightly – with the latest result, a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City, leaving the Garibaldi rooted to the bottom of the second tier table.

As it to be expected following a loss, there were a number of below-par performances from Hughton’s side on Saturday, although it was Lyle Taylor’s efforts – or lack thereof – that most caught the eye against the Potters.

Indeed, over the 31-year-old’s 71 minutes on the pitch, he managed no shots either on or off target, completed five of his 10 attempted passes, failed with his one attempted cross and touched the ball a grand total of 18 times.

The £720k-rated man also gave away possession of the ball on 11 occasions, lost all of his eight duels and was flagged offside once.

These returns saw the Montserrat international earn a SofaScore match rating of just 6.3, the third-worst rating of any player to feature in the game.

As such, with his side struggling at the wrong end of the table, it is undeniable that Taylor simply must start contributing more for his team in order to help them get back to winning ways, or else Forest could well find themselves in a relegation scrap come the end of the season.
