Narsingh Deonarine ton carries Guyana to semis

A round-up of the second day’s action – or lack of due to rain – at the President’s Cup

Cricinfo staff31-Oct-2009Narsingh Deonarine: To Guyana’s rescue•The Nation

Narsingh Deonarine’s unbeaten century boosted Guyana into the semi-finals of the WICB President’s Cup with a seven-wicket success over Barbados at Albion. Chasing 232, Guyana were indebted to Deonarine’s 102 which sealed the win with 6.5 overs remaining out of an allotted 49.Deonarine put on 133 off 114 balls for the third wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (38*), the pair having come together in the 24th over when the captain Ramnaresh Sarwan chipped a return catch to Dwayne Smith. There were no further hiccups, however, as Deonarine and Chanderpaul battered the bowlers and move Guyana to eight points following their first-round victory over the Leeward Islands on Wednesday.Barbados had began drastically after Ryan Hinds opted to bat. Martin Nurse went second ball of the innings, nicking Esuan Crandon behind for 0. Hinds (31) and Kirk Edwards (32) added 68 for the second wicket to restore order but Hinds’ dismissal, bowled by Crandon in the 16th over, opened the sluice gates. Barbados proceeded to lose six wickets for 52 runs to crash to 120 for 7 in the 32nd over. Suliemann Benn, the West Indies left-arm spinner, swung his way to 39 from 40 balls in an 82-run stand with Khalid Springer (45 from 37) that got Barbados past 200. The pair were dismissed within nine balls of each other and the tail went cheaply.Barbados, on four points, will face Leewards in their final preliminary round match on Saturday in an attempt to claim one of the three remaining semi-final berths. In a rain-hit match at the Providence Stadium, the two bottom-placed teams were hit with another road block. Leeward Islands were 37 for 0 after six overs against West Indies Under-19, out of which 31 came off Kieron Powell’s bat, when rain stopped play. The showers continued and play was called off at 2:00pm. The game was abandoned as a no-result. The Leewards and West Indies U-19s were already coming off losses in Wednesday’s opening matches and remain stuck at the bottom of the points tables with one point each.Jamaica’s shot at sealing a place in the semi-finals look slim after their match against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) was washed out at Georgetown. Persistent rain forced an abandonment just 12.1 overs into CCC’s innings after they opted to bat. With the score 41 for 2, the players were hurried into shelter and the rain continued through the afternoon, leaving the umpires Clyde Duncan and Dalton Holder to call off play at 1:45 pm. Jerome Taylor’s two wickets in the first over had boosted Jamaica but a 37-run partnership between Romel Currency and Nekoli Perris put matters back on course before the deluge. Both teams received a point for the abandonment, leaving CCC with four points following win over the Windward Islands on Wednesday, and Jamaica with a single point after they were beaten by Trinidad & Tobago in their opening match.Rain played spoilsport at West Demerara as well, where no play was possible for Trinidad & Tobago and the Windward Islands.

ATUAÇÕES: Brenner e Tanque levam as maiores notas após virada

Eles receberam as maiores avaliações do LANCE!

CONFIRA AS NOTAS:

BOTAFOGO

5,5

Acertou no último cruzamento, antes do gol.

6,5
CARLI

7,0
BRENNER

Celtic: Hoops keen on Danny Mandroiu

Celtic are interested in bringing Shamrock Rovers star Danny Mandroiu to Parkhead, The Scottish Sun reported late on Monday night.

The Lowdown: Mandroiu profiled

Mandroiu is 23 years of age and is primarily an attacking midfielder but he’s extremely versatile. The Irishman has also played as a central and defensive midfielder, on both wings and even as a centre-forward during his career. [Transfermarkt]

He’s netted 15 goals and provided six assists in 2021, with the former Brighton and Bohemian man labelled as ‘unbelievable’ by Shamrock boss Stephen Bradley.

Bradley also stated earlier this year that Mandroiu is ‘the fittest’ he’s ever been, and it seems as if Celtic will be making their move very soon.

The Latest: January move?

The Scottish Sun shared a story late on Monday evening, suggesting the Hoops are confident a deal can be struck.

Celtic have been keeping tabs on Mandroiu since the summer and it appears as if they will firm up their interest over the coming months.

The Verdict: Desmond or Nicholson’s decision?

Celtic brought in defender Liam Scales from Shamrock Rovers over the summer, however, Scales is yet to start a game under Ange Postecoglou.

Rumours have since emerged that Desmond may have brought Scales to Glasgow to balance the books at Shamrock, a club he has a 25% stake in, so hopefully, this isn’t the same.

Mandroiu appears to be making a real impact in Ireland and could bolster Postecoglou’s midfield options, so hopefully, he’s a target Michael Nicholson and Postecoglou want, and not a signing purely for Desmond’s benefit, as Scales’ was alleged.

In other news: Celtic now lining up January move for 6 ft 4 international.

MUFC fans react to Romano update on Rangnick

Reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Ralf Rangnick is not the favourite to take over at Manchester United, should the Red Devils part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As to be expected, a number of United supporters have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Solskjaer’s position as manager appears to be under major threat following a 2-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City prior to the international break. Reports have suggested that United players and staff ‘believe’ the Norwegian will lose his job, with Rangnick – currently working as a director at Lokomotiv Moscow – emerging as the frontrunner to take over.

However, speaking on his YouTube channel, as relayed by The Daily Express, Romano claimed that Rangnick would want full power at Old Trafford. The 63-year-old is appreciated by the United board but is not thought to be a ‘main option’ to possibly take over from Solskjaer.

United fans react

@utdreport shared Romano’s update about Rangnick, which led to these fans giving their thoughts, with one labelling the news as ‘telling’ and another drawing comparisons with how Sir Alex Ferguson exerted total control during his time at Old Trafford.

Yerry Mina was superb for Colombia

Everton defender Yerry Mina put in a superb performance for Colombia over the weekend as they secured a hard-earned point in their World Cup qualification match against Brazil.

The 27-year-old was instrumental at the back as Reinaldo Rueda’s charges held their opponents to a goalless draw, keeping themselves in the play-off position as a result.

On what was expected to be a difficult night for Mina, given the quality of the opposition, the towering centre-back had little trouble keeping the likes of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Lucas Paqueta quiet.

Throughout the 90 minutes, he cut out several through balls from the Brazilian attackers and thwarted their advances on many occasions, clearing his lines when needed and also playing out from the back in a composed manner.

As per SofaScore, Mina was awarded a match rating of 7.5 out of 10, the second-highest total received amongst his teammates, highlighting his impressive influence over proceedings.

The 6 foot 3 beast won both of his duels at the Estadio Metropolitano, made a whopping four interceptions and completed three clearances.

Mina was also outstanding with the ball at his feet too, achieving a pass completion ratio of 93% after completing four of his six attempted long balls.

Colombia host Ecuador on Thursday as they aim to keep their chances of finishing in an automatic qualification spot alive, and Mina will have to be in top form once again if they’re to do just that.

Meanwhile, Everton manager Rafael Benitez will be hoping his star centre-back can produce a similar display when the Toffees take on West Ham United following the international break, helping to extend their promising start to the Premier League campaign.

They have kept just two clean sheets all season so the Toffees will be keen to see Mina perform like this on a more regular basis.

And, in other news…Get it done: Everton must seal swoop for 6 ft 6 monster, Benitez would love him

South African stars have IPL edge

IPL teams that have more South African players in their side, especially Bangalore, have a clear home advantage now that the tournament has been relocated to that country, coaches and players from the league have said

IPL teams that have more South African players in their side, especially Bangalore, have a clear home advantage now that the tournament has been relocated to that country, coaches and players from the league have said.Ray Jennings, the coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore, which has five South Africans in the team, the maximum in this season’s IPL, says his side has a definite tactical advantage – Jennings himself is a former South Africa coach. Darren Berry, the coach of Rajasthan Royals, the IPL champions who have three South Africans in their side, including Graeme Smith, the national captain, says the insights provided by these players would be an advantage. And Adam Gilchrist, who will lead Hershchelle Gibbs as captain of Deccan Chargers, says that local knowledge would add a new dimension to this IPL starting on April 18.”Tactically, it must be an advantage,” Jennings said. “The coaching staff is also from South Africa so the preparation would be done to perfection because we obviously know what we are doing. Our team may have more of a home base than anybody else because we have five South African players and six if you count Kevin Pietersen, the captain.”Shaun Pollock, who is coaching Mumbai Indians, admits that Bangalore has an advantage with players like Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher and Dale Steyn in the side. “Probably Bangalore have a slight advantage as they have five South African players,” Pollock said. But Mumbai Indians, who he coaches along with Jonty Rhodes are not far behind, having signed up JP Duminy, the star allrounder, for US$ 950,000 this year. “But it doesn’t count for too much as people play in all kinds of conditions,” Pollock said. “As for Mumbai, quite a few of our Indian guys are here and that works to our advantage as they are exposed to the local conditions and that will definitely help.”Berry says Rajasthan Royals would fancy their chances, too, having players of the calibre of Smith in the side. “It is good we have a got strong South African contingent (Graeme Smith, Morne Morkel, Tyron Henderson),” he said. “It is an advantage. We are lucky that Smith, the South African captain, whose insight will help into what the conditions we can expect.”Gilchirst, who has Gibbs to bank on for Deccan Chargers, admits that local knowledge provides a definite edge. “Obviously some local knowledge always helps,” he said. “But it would be interesting to see various team make-ups coming under close scrutiny now that the venue has changed with different conditions and different circumstances to what everyone was planning for in India. It does add a new dimension.”However, the players and coaches admitted that adaptability would be a key factor on South African pitches, irrespective of whether teams have South African players or not.”South African conditions will present a different set of circumstances than India and with that we have the flexibility in our squad to alter what type of player we will take,” Berry said. “You must have players who can adapt to different conditions. We have that but there were some teams last year in the IPL that didn’t have players who could adapt. Perhaps bowling will have a bigger impact in South Africa as they could benefit from the bounce and carry the pitches offer there.”Pollock agrees but adds that spinners may have a crucial role to play over the next two months. “Yes, definitely,” he said. “If you look at the records during the Twenty20 World Cup guys like Harbhajan Singh and Daniel Vettori did well so I have no doubt spinners will have a role to play.”As for the South African players, they are just happy to be playing at home after almost 18 months on the road, including gruelling tours to England and Australia. “From a personal point of view, it’s fantastic that we don’t have to leave the country again,” Dale Steyn said. “We have spent so much time on the road over the last two years, and to have the Champions Trophy and now the IPL at home will be great for all of us. It feels like we are forever going overseas, and it will be nice to spend more time with family and friends.”

Rajasthan cut Kaif from final squad

Mohammad Kaif has been left out of Rajasthan Royals’ 17-18 man squad which will remain in South Africa for the 2009 season of the IPL

Cricinfo staff15-Apr-2009Mohammad Kaif has been left out of Rajasthan Royals’ final squad which will remain in South Africa for the 2009 season of the IPL. However, he may return if there are injuries to other members of the team. The other six players who are returning to India are Dinesh Salunkhe, Paras Dogra, Anup Revandkar, Srideep Mangela, Ashraf Makda and Azhar Malik. Salunkhe was the legspinner who was included in the 2008 squad through a TV talent-hunt show.Kaif was Rajasthan Royals’ most expensive buy at $675,000 during the first auction in 2008. He played all 16 matches in Rajasthan’s victorious campaign in the inaugural IPL but scored only 176 runs at an average of 16.”It has always been a target to pick a final squad of 17-18 players, and this year we have an even stronger squad than last year,” Manoj Badale, the owner of the franchise said. “It is disappointing to have to let go of any players, as they are all stars in our view. Much of the attention will focus on Mohammed Kaif, who has been a key part of our success to date – not just as a batsman, but as a role model for our younger Indian players. He has been extremely supportive of the decision, which says a lot about him as a person. Injuries and new conditions mean that the player’s participation later in the tournament is not ruled out.”

Windies rue squandered chances

Chris Gayle doesn’t let many emotions show on the cricket field, but he must have been churning inside when Andrew Strauss’s regulation outside-edge fell from his grasp

Chris Gayle doesn’t let many emotions show on the cricket field, but he must have been churning inside when Andrew Strauss’s regulation outside-edge fell from his grasp during the first session. It happened last week in Antigua when Strauss was on 47 – here he was on 58 and seeing it like a football.By the time Daren Powell conjured the ball of the day to uproot Strauss’s middle stump, the drop had cost 84 runs and West Indies were playing catch-up. Gayle has stood at slip throughout his international career and caught his fair share in that position, but the two he has missed recently have been crucial. This wasn’t the sort of surface when batsmen need a second opportunity.Although West Indies are improving significantly, coaching them remains a frustrating experience and John Dyson could only shrug his shoulders. “I am sure Chris is disappointed that he missed that chance today but he does work at his slip catching and it is just one of those things,” he said.It was a day of misses and near-misses for West Indies. Alastair Cook escaped twice, a top-edge into the deep which Sulieman Benn, despite his huge strides, couldn’t reach at deep midwicket, then an edge between keeper and slip when he had 86. Neither cost many as Cook fell for 94, but a more crucial mistake came in the closing overs as Kevin Pietersen was missed by Jerome Taylor at fine-leg off a fired-up Fidel Edwards. The aggravation was clear on Edwards’ face.It had taken West Indies 64 overs to make the breakthrough and it came, unexpectedly, from Powell, who again struggled with his ongoing problems of wrist position and control. However, his final spell of 7-3-14-1 was the best he had bowled for some time, although Dyson admitted his overall contribution was still below par.”I think the wicket was very important for him, it was a terrific ball, he’s been working to get back that shape – away-swing to right-handers, in-swing to left-handers, and it pitched perfectly. But overall today, Daren again would be disappointed with his bowling, he bowled too many loose balls, that is the area he really needs to work on.”Dyson, though, had more praise for the rest of his attack despite them conceding 108 runs in the morning session when there was a hint of swing on offer. “I thought that in the first session two of the pace bowlers bowled particularly well, I think the wicket is an exceptional batting wicket and I am sure our batsmen took heart at just what a good surface it is to bat on. I wasn’t too displeased with the pace bowling in the first session.”England’s end-of-play total of 301 for 3 is exactly the same as it was after the first day in Antigua. Then they went onto post 566 and something similar is on the cards here, but Dyson remained confident that his side can respond in kind.”If it looks like a good wicket and feels like a good wicket, then the chances are that it is a good wicket. That is how we read it this morning, it looked a good batting wicket,” he said. “We’ve set ourselves throughout our preparation to bat as well as we can throughout the game.” West Indies have responded once to a huge England total, the chances are they will have to do it all over again to retain their series advantage.

Brown puts Jamaica in control

A round-up of the first day of the seventh-round matches of the regional four-day competition

Cricinfo staff20-Feb-2009Three top-order batsmen hit fifties to put the Windward Islands in a strong position but legspinner Odean Brown’s six-wicket haul handed Jamaica opening-day honours in Dominica. Windwards were off to a great start after being put in, with Keddy Lesporis and Johnson Charles putting on an opening stand of 70. But Brown claimed both batsmen within 19 runs of each other – Lesporis departed for 50 off 78 balls after being caught by Tamar Lambert. Andre Fletcher and Kevin James then took centrestage in a third-wicket stand of 88 which propelled Windwards to 177 and looked to have laid the foundation for a big score. While Fletcher hit six fours during his 102-ball 61, James stroked three boundaries in his patient 55. When Fletcher was bowled by Brown after lunch, though, it triggered a slide as Darren Sammy, Donwell Hector and captain Rawl Lewis fell cheaply. Windwards were eventually bowled out for 261 in the final session with the last six wickets falling for 46. At the close, Jamaica had reached 15 without loss with Xavier Marshall and Brenton Parchment at the crease.
