Lancashire face a mountainous task to save the match after closing three wickets down following on 360 behind against Warwickshire

Lancashire managed to interpret the absence of outstanding individuals in their ranks as a virtue while they were winning the County Championship last season but in circumstances such as these it looks uncomfortably like a shortcoming.Winning cricket matches, as Lancashire proved, depends on individuals combining effectively as a team, especially the bowlers, but with 238 runs still needed to avoid an innings defeat against Warwickshire today, the statistics of Lancashire’s batting form are not encouraging. In 2011, for example, even winning the title, they managed only eight first-class hundreds, compared with 16 for both Warwickshire and Somerset, and 22 for Durham. Yet if there is one thing they need to have any hope of saving this match it is a proven accumulator of runs. What’s more, their best hope of any player stepping up to fulfill that role seems already to have gone. Ashwell Prince, whose unbeaten 87 in Lancashire’s first innings denied Warwickshire the opportunity to wrap things up inside three days, perished after facing only four deliveries in the follow-on.The South African was caught at slip going after a ball from Jeetan Patel with a stroke that contrasted so starkly with the patience of his near four-hour vigil earlier in the day it seemed almost as if it were another batsman. Coming moments after Karl Brown had gone for 45, ending a stand of 87 for the second wicket that appeared to have set up Lancashire nicely for a last-day rearguard, it was a bitter blow for Glen Chapple’s side and an enormous fillip for Warwickshire.Paul Horton, with whom Brown shared that second-wicket partnership, played soundly for two and a half hours to be unbeaten on 56, but will now need to do so for a good deal longer and hope for more of the gloomy conditions that came to their aid in bringing the third day to a premature close. As it was, Lancashire limped to 122 for 3 and Warwickshire remain well on course for the innings victory that will put them 15 points clear at the top of Division One with a game in hand on both Nottinghamshire and Somerset.Eight wickets in the day rewarded more impressive work from the Warwickshire bowlers on what has essentially been a good batting surface. Given that Lancashire had been 54 for 5 on Thursday, 197 all out in their first innings represented something of a recovery. Yet the total of 408 they needed merely to avoid the follow-on was never remotely likely. They lost only two more wickets in the morning session, their resistance almost entirely due to the efforts of Prince, who has four half-centuries in 10 Championship innings since he rejoined Lancashire. Only he, with the benefit of considerable experience, of course, produced the necessary resolve that was required to make Warwickshire work for their wickets. There was some, naturally, from Glen Chapple, batting despite the discomfort of the side strain that prevented his bowling for much of the Warwickshire innings. He survived 44 balls but even he was guilty of an injudicious choice of shot, caught behind trying to hook Chris Wright, falling for 14.Gareth Cross, shaping to pull Chris Woakes but failing to commit fully to the stroke, and Ajmal Shahzad, taking the aerial route against Jeetan Patel’s offspin, had both been wasteful earlier, although Jim Troughton, running backwards, did his best to let Shahzad off the hook, juggling the ball twice before grabbing it at the third attempt at long-on.Woakes, making an impressive comeback from the ankle injury that caused him to miss the early part of the season, finished with 3 for 20 and both he and Wright continued to produce moments of menace. Patel could not conjure much in the way of turn but he finished on a hat-trick when he dismissed Simon Kerrigan and Gary Keedy with successive balls, denying Lancashire even the consolation of a batting point.Woakes took his fourth wicket of the match when Stephen Moore edged a fine away-swinger to first slip in only the fifth over of the follow-on and for a moment Warwickshire had visions of a rapid conclusion.Horton and Brown had other ideas but just as some of the more pessimistic Warwickshire supporters were beginning to wonder if the declaration had been delayed too long on Thursday, two wickets in quick succession tipped the balance heavily back in their favour.First Brown, always looking to play shots, edged Wright into the gloves of wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose and then came Prince’s aberration. Horton, who has not made a Championship century since April 2010, has much weight on his shoulders.

Struggling hosts hope for series leveller

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the second ODI between West Indies and Pakistan in Gros Inlet, St Lucia

The Preview by Liam Brickhill24-Apr-2011

Match Facts

April 25, Gros Islet, St Lucia
Start time 0930am (1330 GMT)Saeed Ajmal was a constant threat to West Indies’ batsmen in the first match, and is sure to be a handful in conditions that will continue to suit the spinners•AFP

The Big Picture

West Indies’ joy after their win in the opening Twenty20 of Pakistan’s tour was short-lived as they crashed to an eight-wicket drubbing in the opening one-day international at Gros Islet. After the buzz and energy of their performance in the Twenty20, the hosts looked badly behind the pace for much of the game on Saturday and a fatal misreading of the pitch backfired when the seamers were carted for 162 runs in 29.3 wicketless overs, allowing Pakistan’s batsmen to canter to victory on a spin-friendly wicket.Monday’s game, played at the same venue, will give West Indies a chance to rectify some of their mistakes. The question of team balance is a delicate one for them, however, and the inclusion of both captain Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo when it might be argued that only one of the two similar allrounders should slot in at No. 7 in a balanced XI throws the team’s ballast off centre. West Indies looked a batsman light on Saturday, but it’s likely that legspinner Anthony Martin will be brought in for the second ODI – probably at the expense of allrounder Andre Russell – meaning that there will be even less batting firepower, heaping more pressure on a top order shorn of its most experienced members. The lack of bite in the seam attack on docile pitches also doesn’t bode well for the Test series that follows the one-dayers, and for the sake of success in both formats West Indies are going to have to find a way to take more wickets. The one area of concern for Pakistan – and it’s a relatively minor one for a team that has moved seamlessly on from defeat in the tour opener with a commanding performance by both the batsmen and an impressive trio of spinners – can also be found in the seam department. Wahab Riaz gave away 11 wides and three no-balls on Saturday, while Junaid Khan also sent down six wides, and without the help of extras West Indies would not have passed 200.Such inconsistency is unforgivable on a pitch that offered minimal movement for the quicks either through the air or off the pitch, but so masterful was the performance from Pakistan’s slow bowlers – in particular Saeed Ajmal, whose variations proved impossible to pick – and so composed were their batsmen, three of whom scored half-centuries, that ultimately it barely mattered. West Indies will be motivated to regain some pride and level the five-match series, but it is Pakistan who start as firm favourites.

Watch out for…

Darren Bravo has only played 21 ODIs, but due to circumstance and and his own undeniable talent (not to mention a resemblance to a certain former West Indies great) he has already become a vital cog in West Indies’ middle order. His half-century in the first game held things together, and he looked set to take a heavy toll on the bowling at the death before he was cut down by an amateurish run-out.
Pakistan have a bowler perfectly capable of dealing with the Bravo threat, however. Saeed Ajmal beat the outside edge of Bravo Jr.’s bat no less than five times in his first over on Saturday, and deserved more than just one wicket as he weaved webs of doubt in the minds of all the batsmen with his .

Team news

West Indies are almost certain to hand a debut to Martin, an Antiguan legspinner, but it’s not clear who he might replace in the XI. Andre Russell seems the most likely candidate, as he conceded 36 runs in five wayward overs in the first match. That leaves the batting even lighter, but West Indies only have five specialist batsmen in their squad and all of them played in the first match.West Indies (possible): 1 Devon Smith, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Kirk Edwards, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Carlton Baugh (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Devendra Bishoo, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Anthony Martin
Pakistan’s successful start to the ODI series means their side doesn’t really need any tinkering, and it’s unlikely they’ll risk disturbing their equilibrium. Young allrounder Hammad Azam was not called upon with either bat or ball on Saturday, but it would be very harsh if he was not given another chance to prove himself in the second match.Pakistan (possible): 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Hammad Azam, 7 Mohammad Salman (wk), 8 Shahid Afridi (capt), 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Saeed Ajmal.

Pitch and conditions

The St Lucia surface lost pace noticeably over the course of the Twenty20 match that opened the tour, but appeared to flatten out when Pakistan were chasing down their runs with ease on Saturday afternoon. It remains a welcoming track for spinners, however. Another warm day is expected, and while the rain stayed away in the previous games there remains a slight risk that it could intrude upon proceedings later on.

Stats and trivia

  • One man who could solve multiple problems for West Indies in both the batting and spin-bowling departments has taken more wickets and scored more runs in ODIs at this ground than anyone. Chris Gayle has scored 444 runs and taken 11 wickets, but unfortunately it’s unlikely he’ll be back any time soon.
  • The two men behind him on that run-scoring list are none other than Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
  • West Indies have played three ODI’s against Pakistan in St Lucia and lost all of them, Pakistan winning by 40 and 22 runs during the 2005 series won 3-0 by the visitors and by eight wickets on Saturday.
  • Pakistan’s top-scorer in the first match, Misbah-ul-Haq, has scored the most runs without hitting a century in ODIs among current Pakistan players. Out of all current players, only Elton Chigumbura, Stuart Matsikenyeri and Daniel Vettori have more ODI runs without a ton.

Quotes

“The Pakistan spinners bowled some good balls, but to be a great player you have to find a way to score off the good balls not just the bad balls.”
“I was very happy when West Indies won the toss and chose to bat because I thought the pitch would help our spinners. I think our spinners have been doing a great job for us in the last few months, and they again set things up for us.”

Yuvraj Singh targets injury-free season

Yuvraj Singh has set his sights on achieving peak fitness for the packed season coming up, after a series of injury concerns in the recent past

Cricinfo staff04-Jun-2010Yuvraj Singh has set his sights on achieving peak fitness for the packed season coming up, after a series of injury concerns in the recent past. He endured a torrid time at the IPL and the World Twenty20, leading to serious questions being raised about his form and fitness.”These days I am at the National Cricket Academy [in Bangalore], training a bit harder here,” Yuvraj told the . “We understand that it is a big season with virtually no breaks before the 50-over World Cup. I had issues with my knee and shoulder in the past, so I have to ensure they are able to sustain the load for the long season.”Currently in his tenth year of international cricket, Yuvraj has sealed his reputation as a top player in the limited-overs formats but there remain doubts over his Test credentials. Yuvraj admitted he had not been at his best in the longest version of the game, but also pointed out the competition he had to deal with for a spot in the XI.”My record in Tests may not have been great. For the better part of the career, I have had to compete with my former captain Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. I could get a permanent slot in the Tests after Sourav retired.”During my peak years I hadn’t played many Tests. But there were times when I got a chance but I failed to consolidate my position. I would have a good knock in a Test, fail in one innings, and then be out of the team. Then again I would play two Test matches and find myself benched. I wasn’t consistent, and people too didn’t have confidence in me, but it was my mistake.”One area where Yuvraj’s calibre has clearly dipped is the fielding. Once a regular at cover-point for the Indian team, he is now a slow mover, often banished to the outfield. “I am not 21 anymore. Definitely I would like to get back to fielding at point. I had hurt my knee and fingers in the past fielding there. Remember fielding at point and fielding elsewhere are two different things. The day I feel 100%, I’ll certainly go back to point.”

Everton’s Tom Davies must take his chance after Andre Gomes’ injury, says Michael Ball

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers.

Everton’s Tom Davies must take his chance at Everton now that Andre Gomes is out injured, says Michael Ball.

What did he say?

Andre Gomes is going to face many months out of action after his horrific injury sustained against Tottenham Hotspur. The nasty ankle fracture forced the 26-year-old to undergo surgery and as he faces a long rehabilitation process fellow midfielders must step up.

Ball believes, despite the sad circumstances, that Davies must be the man to take Gomes’ place and faces a potentially career-defining time at Goodison Park.

The former Everton man told the Liverpool Echo: “It’s come under very sad circumstances but Tom has to grab his chance now.

“Since he’s come into the team, he’s shown the quality he’s got and hasn’t let anyone down,” Ball added.

“I’m made up for Tom and he just needs a good little run now of six or seven games where he’s keeping those 8/9 out of 10 performances going so he can make the spot his own and there could even be opportunities for him in the England set-up.

“Obviously Tom has got to focus on Everton first and foremost but if he can put consistent performances in at his best level, it could really set up his career.”

Career-defining period

Davies has been in the Everton squad for a while now, having burst onto the scene in 2016-17 where he made 24 Premier League appearances. This period saw the academy graduate bag two goals and provide three assists for the Toffees.

Now, at 22 years old, the Englishman has a fantastic opportunity to prove himself as the future of Everton and justify the hype that surrounded his breakthrough.

Marco Silva has been reluctant to play Davies this season, handing him just 283 minutes of league action. However, if the Portuguese international wants to build for the future, he must invest in Davies until Gomes returns.

It will, of course, be months until the former Barcelona man returns.

But now, it is time for Davies to prove to Silva that he is capable of thriving in the heart of Everton’s midfield.

Manchester United fans would rather have Wilfred Ndidi over Declan Rice

Some Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to reveal that they’d rather have Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi than West Ham United’s Declan Rice.

The Mirror reports that the Red Devils are monitoring the England international ahead of a potential £70m move for the Hammers academy graduate, who started England’s 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic on Friday evening.

Rice has started all eight of West Ham’s Premier League games this season, and at just 20 years of age, looks to be a real prospect.

However, a number of United fans on Twitter have named who they would rather sign ahead of the West Ham No.41 – Leicester star Ndidi.

The 22-year-old has started all but one of the Foxes’ league games this term, scoring two goals.

Ndidi cost Leicester a reported £15m back in 2017, and has emerged as a key cog in their midfield – his form has helped Brendan Rodgers’ men to 4th in the table as things stand.

Let’s see what the United fans on Twitter have been saying…

Liverpool: Bologna’s Christoph Winterling turned down commercial and marketing director role at Anfield

Christoph Winterling, commercial and marketing director at Serie A club Bologna, was offered a similar role at Champions League holders Liverpool.

However, as reported by the print edition of Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], he turned down the job offer from the Premier League club, saying that he feels that Bologna have a “bright future”.

Corriere dello Sport stated [via Sport Witness] that Winterling is targeting European qualification with Bologna, with both Inter and AC Milan reportedly wanting him as well.

Perhaps Winterling has very strong faith in the project at Bologna, because Liverpool would surely seem a very attractive proposition from a commercial as well as a footballing point of view.

In European competition, Liverpool have played in three major finals since 2016, going from missing out on Europe altogether in 2016/17 to competing in the last two Champions League finals, winning it this year. [via TransferMarkt]

Liverpool are eighth in Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a valuation of $2.18bn (£1.73bn), a 12% increase on 2018, with revenues of $613m (£484.86m) and an operating income of $128m (£101.24m).

The Liverpool Echo reported that the club took in more than £250m from winning the Champions League and finishing second in the Premier League last season.

Liverpool are also at the centre of a tug-of-war between New Balance and Nike over the rights to supply the club’s kits, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. The former currently hold the contract but the latter are working on a £70m deal to team up with the Anfield club, as per The Athletic.

The club’s social media following illustrates its global appeal, with Liverpool ninth in the world for this metric, according to the Global Digital Football Benchmark [via Inside Sport], which stated that the Reds have 32 million Facebook fans, 11 million Instagram followers, 12 million Twitter followers and one million YouTube subscribers, with a further 11 million connections on other social platforms.

Liverpool’s booming fortunes both on and off the field should make them a hugely attractive commercial proposition, so Winterling must have strong faith in Bologna if he turned down the Premier League club to stay with his current employers.

Once the Reds keep getting results on the pitch and raking in the money off it, though, they shouldn’t be unduly affected by Winterling’s decision to snub them for Bologna.

Man United fans react to Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw injury update

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful that both Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial will be able to train with the club this week ahead of the trip to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Shaw was forced off in the first half of United’s 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

Martial, meanwhile, completed the full 90 minutes but picked up a late knock in the shock home loss for the 20-time English champions.

After the contest, Solskjaer told MUTV, as quoted by The Manchester Evening News, that he hoped neither injury was “too bad” and that the pair could return to training this week.

As expected, the United fans have been on social media having their say on the situation, and a number have expressed their concern at the thought of only having Mason Greenwood as back-up.
