Black veil of secrecy: India begin training in privacy in Perth

Pant was the main attraction on Tuesday before Kohli hit the nets on Wednesday afternoon

Straight Talk: Will the lack of warm-up matches cost India?

While the shiny 60,000-seat Optus Stadium, the site of the series-opener in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, takes centre stage in Perth these days, the WACA ground – that old warhorse located on the opposite bank of the Swan River – remains the spiritual home of Western Australian cricket.Walk along Braithwaite Street in East Perth and you pass the famed WACA nets where there is the familiar sight of cricketers – ranging from state to junior players – going through the paces. But on Tuesday it was rather an eyesore, with the nets completely covered by black shade cloth that snaked around near a construction site amid the ground’s major redevelopment, which is expected to be completed before next season.Related

Fast and furious: A spicy pitch awaits India in Perth

India shelve intra-squad match in favour of training, centre-wicket

It was day one of India’s tour of Australia and the secrecy was reminiscent of their last visit to Perth during the 2022 T20 World Cup when a similar effort to thwart prying eyes took place. On that occasion, however, India did play two matches against a WA XI side that attracted near capacity crowds with the entry fee donated to the WA Cricket Foundation. This time around India have opted for total privacy, though the BCCI clarified* that no instruction was given by the team to the WACA stadium authorities or the media that Wednesday’s training would be behind closed doors. As ESPNcricinfo had reported earlier in the month, India opted to scrap a three-day intra-squad game – which would have been played behind closed doors – at the WACA from November 15 to 17 and instead the squad will train during those three days.It was unclear exactly what their training plans are this week, but India decided to get to work quickly having had staggered arrivals into Perth at the weekend. After the WACA ground staff spent Tuesday morning getting the nets into shape, India arrived in the early afternoon to a quiet reception with only a sprinkling of fans greeting them off the team bus.The WACA was in a state of “lockdown”, as splashed around the media, although perhaps slightly alarmist as its front gates were open and staff strolled in and out. But staff – with the ground doubling as WA Cricket’s headquarters – and construction workers have been told not to film or take photos of the training sessions.India have been training behind a black cloth at the WACA in Perth•Tristan LavaletteWhile the massive tarp obscured most of the public view, there were several vantage points along Nelson Crescent – right behind the batters in the nets. The secret training session suddenly became a free for all although onlookers had to take turns standing along a retaining wall with limited space.India’s net session lasted a few hours on Tuesday, but experienced players such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin were not present. Among those in the nets were Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul. They faced around six deliveries at a time and spent about an hour in total in the nets. With fast and bouncy conditions expected at Optus Stadium, the WACA nets are hoped to acclimatise India’s batters. Several local Perth club quicks, undoubtedly selected for their pace, unleashed hostile bowling with a back of a length seemingly encouraged. But bouncers were rare.Jaiswal was intent on aggression and one of his mighty blows cleared the nets and sailed onto Braithwaite Street which at that time of day is usually teeming with cars and students around the nearby school. Fortunately, the street was momentarily quiet as a keen fan scurried to pocket a memento. Pant was in fluent touch but did cop a blow to his body, while another fierce delivery also hit his bat flush and flew out of his hands. He glanced at the onlookers, some of whom giggled, and sported a wry smile. With Kohli not around on Tuesday, Pant became the main attraction although perhaps in an indication of cricket’s standing in an Australian-rules-football-obsessed city, many locals didn’t seem to know who he was.”Do you know which one is Pant?” an exasperated photographer asked me. “I thought I’ve been shooting him, but it’s actually Jaiswal!”

After he was done training, Pant was spotted walking down a major road near the ground amid the post-work rush but those around him seemed oblivious that they were in the presence of one of the most famous cricketers in the world. While the photographers and cameramen started to trudge off amid the late afternoon heat, those hanging around clung on to hope that Kohli would make a late appearance.”Good shot, Virat!” said a construction worker who had leapt onto a hedge along the perimeter. It sparked a frenzy with numerous fans quickly finding vantage points only to be left disappointed when the batters in the nets were all left-handed. Eventually, a security guard came around and it was quite clear our welcome had worn thin.By Wednesday morning, with India set to train through the day, those vantage points from the previous day had been covered by more black shade cloth. Kohli finally appeared on Wednesday afternoon along with India’s other main Test players, including Bumrah, Jadeja and Ashwin. He looked sharp batting for more than an hour as he spent time in each of the four nets. He was mostly tested by back-of-a-length and full deliveries, with a member of the coaching staff occasionally positioned behind him.Despite the measures taken to protect India’s training from eager eyes, some keen fans came equipped with ladders. The same security guard was on patrol but it appeared no local law had been broken.”It’s going to be a long week,” he muttered as he trudged past the shade cloth and down Braithwaite Street.

Pooran, Wiese, Little make Gladiators back-to-back Abu Dhabi T10 champions

They ended Strikers’ seven-game winning streak while forcing Pollard to tactically retire himself out

Aadam Patel04-Dec-2022T10 is a funny game. Twenty-two men hit a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, Deccan Gladiators always win.Mushtaq Ahmed’s side entered the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Saturday evening knowing they had to win three games in succession over the weekend if they wanted to retain their Abu Dhabi T10 title and that is exactly what they did.Gladiators edged their way into the playoffs but were far too strong over the final weekend, defending their total of 94 against Team Abu Dhabi in the eliminator before chasing successfully against Morrisville Samp Army in the second qualifier.Given the advantage of chasing in short-form cricket and the dew factor coming into play as the evening goes on, whoever won the toss in the final was always going to chase. On paper, the New York Strikers were the in-form side after finishing top of the league stage. They went into the final on the back of a seven-game winning streak and after winning the toss and choosing to chase, there was every hope that seven could turn into eight.Nicholas Pooran and David Wiese put on a title-winning 74-run stand•Abu Dhabi T10But this is a Gladiators side that is now getting used to winning, and despite losing Suresh Raina, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, and Andre Russell cheaply, captain Nicholas Pooran and David Wiese put on 74 in the last five overs to set Kieron Pollard’s team a target of 129. In a team of superstars, if one doesn’t get you, then another certainly will. The pair smartly played out the threatening Rashid Khan before taking on Jordan Thompson and Wahab Riaz. Wahab’s two overs alone went for 43 runs with Wiese smashing him for 24 in the eighth over. Across nine games, Wiese had managed just 31 runs but he trumped that with an unbeaten 43 off 18 deliveries in the final. The big-hitting allrounder had saved his best with the bat till the last.Meanwhile, Pooran carried on his stunning form with 40 off 23 balls and finished as the highest run-scorer of the tournament. No batter passed the 300 mark for Season 6 of the competition bar Pooran’s tally of 345 including more sixes (31) and fours (25) than anyone else. For a man in desperate need of runs after a tough few months with West Indies, this tournament couldn’t have come at a better time for both his form and his captaincy.”I had a challenging year this year so it was good to come and play cricket with a smile on my face and just enjoy it,” he said after the game.Josh Little gave away only four runs while taking two wickets in his two overs•Abu Dhabi T10Pooran’s side were superb from ball one in the field but in fairness, Strikers’ chase never got going. The in-form Muhammad Waseem was bowled by Josh Little off the second ball of the innings and when Mohammad Hasnain removed the deadly Paul Stirling and the experienced Eoin Morgan in the second over, the game was as good as done.Azam Khan tried to counter by hitting Zahir Khan consecutively for four and six but he was done the next delivery by one that was flighted up and Strikers’ misery went full circle when Pollard tactically retired towards the latter stages of the innings.Little returned to remove Pollard’s replacement Rashid for his tenth wicket of the tournament and finished with stunning figures of two wickets for four runs off his two overs to seal the trophy.”Four years, three finals, twice winners. It’s a wonderful feeling altogether,” said Gaurav Grover, the owner of Gladiators. No side had ever defended their Abu Dhabi T10 title until Sunday evening and you’d be a fool to write off the Gladiators making it a hat-trick this time next year.

What Australia, India, New Zealand and England need to do to qualify for World Test Championship final

New Zealand could be strong contenders if they win their four remaining Tests, while England need a series win against India

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2020Last week, the ICC finally confirmed the revised methodology to decide the finalists for the inaugural World Test Championship: the two teams with the highest percentage of points earned from those they contested for would play for the title.Going by this calculation, Australia are currently on top of the table with 82.2% of total points earned. Their remaining series are at home against India (four Tests) and away in South Africa (three).India, who are second with 75%, will now play four Tests against England instead of five. That means India have eight Tests remaining in the current cycle, with each win fetching them 30 points, and a draw getting them 10.ALSO READ: Kohli on ICC altering WTC points system: ‘Confusing, very difficult to understand’Australia obviously have an excellent chance of making the final, but New Zealand will be in the hunt too if they pick up the maximum of 240 points from their two home series against West Indies and Pakistan. The WTC table when ranked by percentage points•ESPNcricinfo LtdHere is a look at some of the scenarios of where teams will be placed depending on their results.

  • If New Zealand get the maximum 240 points from their home series, they will get to 70% (420 points out of a maximum of 600). However, if they drop points in any Test, their percentage will fall steeply as both their series consist of two Tests, with 60 points riding on a win. If they win three of the four Tests and draw one, their percentage will drop to 63.3.
  • If India finish with a 4-4 win-loss result in their eight remaining Tests, they will end up with 66.67% of total points. If they manage a 5-3 scoreline, their percentage will climb to 70.83, which will be marginally ahead of New Zealand’s maximum possible score.
  • Four wins, two draws and two losses will leave India with a score of 69.44%, marginally below New Zealand’s percentage if they sweep 240 points at home.
  • If Australia win all four Tests at home against India, they’ll go up to 86.67%. If they lose all three Tests to South Africa (if the series happens), they’ll drop to 69.33%.
  • England are currently third at 60.83%, but their two remaining series are in Asia, against Sri Lanka and india. Given how difficult it has been to beat India in home conditions recently, England will hope to maximise their points in Sri Lanka – that series is scheduled to take place in January, before England travel to India. If they win both Tests against Sri Lanka and manage a 1-2 result against India, their percentage will be 62.78.

The qualification scenarios will be far clearer in a couple of months’ time when New Zealand would have finished their two home series, and India their tour of Australia.

AC Milan player now “set to leave” with Leeds one of two clubs who can sign him

Leeds United are battling West Ham United for the signing of Santiago Gimenez, with the Mexican striker “set to leave” AC Milan in 2026.

Farke praises Calvert-Lewin role in Leeds turnaround

Daniel Farke’s job was at risk heading into a period in which Leeds faced three ‘big six’ teams in the space of just seven days.

Three good performance and four points later however, and the German’s position is as strong as it ever has been, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring in each of the defeat at Manchester City, the win over Chelsea and of course the dramatic 3-3 draw against champions Liverpool.

“I have followed his career for years and this is what he has done throughout. He has delivered really good performances and scored many goals,” the manager said.

“This is why we were so desperate to sign him because we know what he is capable of if he is fit and in a good rhythm.”

Calvert-Lewin’s injury record was a point of contention when he signed at Elland Road during the summer, and the club are set to pursue a new striker in January to provide added competition for the 28 year-old.

Gimenez set to leave AC Milan

According to an update from Italian journalist Niccolò Ceccarini, via Sport Witness, Leeds and West Ham are the two clubs fighting it out to sign AC Milan striker Gimenez, who is now “set to leave” the Italian giants in the new year.

The Serie A outfit are already searching for his replacement, and a move for the ‘right candidate’ will depend on the Mexican joining a new club.

Gimenez was praised by Milan legend and Senior Advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his arrival at the club, but has failed to cement himself as their top number nine, failing to find the back of the net in Serie A so far this season despite starting eight matches.

Kyle Walker compared the striker to Julian Alvarez having played together in Milan.

That work rate made Alvarez a hit in the Premier League during his time at Manchester City, and if Gimenez could replicate anything close to that at Elland Road he could make Farke and Leeds fans very happy indeed.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, Wife Mamiko Celebrate Birth of First-Born Daughter

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani announced Saturday that he and his wife, Mamiko, have recently welcomed their first child.

"Welcome to the Ohtani family! I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter," Ohtani wrote on Instagram. "To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.

"I would also like to thank the Dodgers organization, my teammates, and the fans for their constant support and kind words of encouragement. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the medical professionals and everyone who dedicated their support to us, up until this wonderful day."

The Dodgers placed Ohtani on the paternity list on Friday, where he can remain for up to three days, meaning he'll likely be back on the field for Los Angeles's series opener against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. If Ohtani needs more time with family, he can be transferred to the restricted list.

Ohtani is off to a great start to the 2025 campaign. Through 20 games, Ohtani is batting .288/.380/.550 with six homers, eight RBIs and five stolen bases.

Liverpool battling Real Madrid for Upamecano as Bayern Munich contract at risk

Liverpool are now battling Real Madrid for the signature of FC Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, amid a new update on his future at the Allianz Arena.

The Reds finally managed to get one over on Madrid on Tuesday night, defeating the Spanish side 1-0 at Anfield in the Champions League, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header, which was the Argentinian’s first goal of the season.

The result was extra sweet, given that it was the first time Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned to Anfield since controversially leaving in the summer, with Arne Slot bringing in Jeremie Frimpong as a replacement.

However, it would be fair to say Frimpong hasn’t made an immediate impact, having only been used sparingly by Slot even prior to his recent injury, which has ruled the right-back out of the last four matches in all competitions.

The manager was also keen to bring in a new centre-back in the summer, narrowly missing out on Marc Guehi on deadline day, given that Crystal Palace were unable to sign a replacement, but a potential alternative has now been identified.

Liverpool battling Real Madrid for Dayot Upamecano

Having gotten the better of Real Madrid on the pitch, Liverpool are now trying to one-up their European foes in the transfer market, with a report from Spain revealing the two clubs are battling it out for Upamecano, although there could be competition from elsewhere.

Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United are also in the race for the defender, amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Bayern, as he is still yet to put pen to paper on a new contract to extend his stay at the German club beyond the end of the season.

Talks over a new deal have now stalled, which suggests the 27-year-old could be on the move in the summer, but Bayern would be unwilling to sanction a move during the January transfer window.

Slot is personally a fan of the centre-back, with the Dutchman of the belief he could adapt to life in the Premier League swiftly and stabilise his backline, and there are plenty of indications the Liverpool manager could be on the money.

Hailed as “outstanding” by Joshua Kimmich, the Bayern star is vastly experienced at the top level, having made 60 appearances in the Champions League and won 11 trophies, across what has been a very impressive career to date.

Despite the contract uncertainty, the Frenchman also remains a key player for Bayern Munich, most recently starting in the 2-1 victory against Paris Saint-Germain, making six clearances and winning four duels to keep the reigning European champions at bay.

That said, Liverpool haven’t always been successful when recruiting from the Bundesliga, with Florian Wirtz yet to adapt to life in the Premier League, failing to register a goal or an assist.

As such, it would be less risky to simply go back in for Guehi, who has already proven himself in the Premier League.

"Message to Nuno" – Tony Cottee slams "awful" West Ham decision after loss to Brentford

West Ham put in one of the worst home performances you’re ever likely to see at the London Stadium on Monday evening, with Brentford easing to a 2-0 win almost completely unchallenged.

West Ham suffer humbling Premier League defeat to Brentford at home

In what was Nuno Espírito Santo’s first home game in charge, the Portuguese was greeted with swathes of empty seats as a host of West Ham supporters boycotted the match in protest of David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the ownership.

For the supporters who did show up to welcome Nuno to east London, they weren’t exactly rewarded for their faith.

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham 0-2 Brentford

Keith Andrews’ Brentford absolutely dominated proceedings, having a seismic 17 shots on goal compared to West Ham’s seven, with the home side only managing to test Caoimhin Kelleher once all evening through Jarrod Bowen.

By contrast, it looked like target practice for Brentford at times, who will consider themselves very unfortunate not to come away from West Ham with a much bigger winning margin.

Alphonse Areola made some superb saves on the night, with both Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade hitting the crossbar, while the former also had a goal chalked off by VAR just before half-time.

Nuno’s starting line-up against the Bees was an interesting one to say the least, with Oliver Scarles and Kyle Walker-Peters starting in very different full-back roles on their opposing sides.

Amid West Ham’s current striker crisis, Nuno also elected to play Lucas Paqueta as the number nine — an experiment which largely failed as the Brazilian failed to impress and lost possession 23 times.

As opposed to a more dynamic pairing of Soungoutou Magassa and Freddie Potts, Nuno instead went with Tomas Soucek and Andy Irving as West Ham’s holding midfielders in a 4-2-3-1, with the Hammers’ engine room absolutely dominated by a more energetic and free-flowing Brentford side.

Nuno raised plenty of eyebrows with his bizarre team selection, and that certainly didn’t help West Ham, who set a very unwanted record.

After the defeat to Brentford, West Ham have now lost their first four home games of the season for the first time in the club’s history, and relegation is looking more and more like a major possibility as the weeks go on.

While the players have to take massive responsibility for what was a dismal home performance, Nuno is facing the wrath of critics.

Tony Cottee sends "message to Nuno" after "awful" West Ham decision

Taking to X, West Ham legend Tony Cottee sent a message to Nuno over his starting line-up, branding his player selection “awful” and calling for action.

Paqueta looked disconnected and bereft of support, leaving West Ham’s attack blunt and predictable.

Meanwhile, the midfield pairing of Soucek and Irving also fell short. The former struggled to influence the game creatively, while Irving appeared out of his depth in a demanding Premier League clash.

Their lack of cohesion and creativity in midfield allowed Brentford to dominate possession and control the tempo, with Nuno’s defence also suffering.

The decision to use Walker-Peters and Scarles as on their opposite sides just didn’t work at all, as they struggled to contain Brentford’s wide threats or contribute anything of note going forward.

Jean-Clair Todibo, who came straight back into the starting eleven after being left out of Nuno’s first two matchday squads, didn’t cover himself in glory either, with Max Kilman having a nightmare alongside the Frenchman.

In the aftermath of their loss, Nuno refused to blame his selection, but it undoubtedly contributed towards a real night to forget for West Ham.

Howe reveals "edge" Newcastle will play with vs Arsenal to win "psychological" battle

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has told his players to bring the aggression to their latest attempt to ruffle the feathers of Premier League title contenders Arsenal.

The Gunners finished as runners-up to Liverpool last season and currently lead the pack chasing the champions this time around.

However, they lost to the Magpies on three occasions last season, including both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-final, and have not scored a single goal in their last three visits to St James’ Park with Howe’s men having turned up the heat to get the better of them.

Asked about that edge they appear to have against Mikel Arteta’s side, their 47-year-old head coach said: “I think we play better when there is that edge in our game. Many times, I say that to the players themselves.

“If we’re not in that sweet spot of aggression and competitiveness, we don’t play the same way. I think we have players that really respond to that type of game.

“Of course there’s a balance depending on what style of game we’re in. I’d like to think we can navigate our way through a game and utilise all the skills we have in our psychological framework to help us win.”

Howe could silence Nwaneri by unleashing £40m Newcastle "machine"

Newcastle host Arsenal in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie, leading 2-0.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 5, 2025 Newcastle's season waiting for a jump start

Newcastle’s start to the season has been hampered by the Alexander Isak saga and while they have largely played well, results have not necessarily followed.

Their recent record against Arsenal – they have won four of the last six encounters in all competitions – is a source of satisfaction but Howe knows it will count for little once the first whistle sounds.

He said: “You don’t think about that going into the game, you think, ‘This is a fresh game and a fresh opportunity to impress’, so we’ve always had that line that you draw under the past.

“The past isn’t relevant, but you need to take whatever confidence you can positively and take that with you, so we’ll look to do that. But this is a fresh game and Arsenal are a new team.”

Howe will celebrate four years at St James’ in November, and a great deal has changed since he took to the dugout for the first time against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium – he had been prevented from doing so for Brentford’s visit to Tyneside a week earlier by Covid-19 – and presided over a 2-0 defeat.

He said: “That was a proud day because it was my first day in the dugout, but it was a tough day as well and it, I think looking back, paved the way for how tough it was going to be to stay in the league because at that stage, we were a long way from the team that we are today.

“I think we’ve come a long way in a relatively short period of time, although four years in footballing terms is a lifetime, really. But we’re still here and we’re still fighting.”
