Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, Wife Mamiko Celebrate Birth of First-Born Daughter

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani announced Saturday that he and his wife, Mamiko, have recently welcomed their first child.

"Welcome to the Ohtani family! I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter," Ohtani wrote on Instagram. "To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.

"I would also like to thank the Dodgers organization, my teammates, and the fans for their constant support and kind words of encouragement. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the medical professionals and everyone who dedicated their support to us, up until this wonderful day."

The Dodgers placed Ohtani on the paternity list on Friday, where he can remain for up to three days, meaning he'll likely be back on the field for Los Angeles's series opener against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. If Ohtani needs more time with family, he can be transferred to the restricted list.

Ohtani is off to a great start to the 2025 campaign. Through 20 games, Ohtani is batting .288/.380/.550 with six homers, eight RBIs and five stolen bases.

Liverpool battling Real Madrid for Upamecano as Bayern Munich contract at risk

Liverpool are now battling Real Madrid for the signature of FC Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, amid a new update on his future at the Allianz Arena.

The Reds finally managed to get one over on Madrid on Tuesday night, defeating the Spanish side 1-0 at Anfield in the Champions League, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header, which was the Argentinian’s first goal of the season.

The result was extra sweet, given that it was the first time Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned to Anfield since controversially leaving in the summer, with Arne Slot bringing in Jeremie Frimpong as a replacement.

However, it would be fair to say Frimpong hasn’t made an immediate impact, having only been used sparingly by Slot even prior to his recent injury, which has ruled the right-back out of the last four matches in all competitions.

The manager was also keen to bring in a new centre-back in the summer, narrowly missing out on Marc Guehi on deadline day, given that Crystal Palace were unable to sign a replacement, but a potential alternative has now been identified.

Liverpool battling Real Madrid for Dayot Upamecano

Having gotten the better of Real Madrid on the pitch, Liverpool are now trying to one-up their European foes in the transfer market, with a report from Spain revealing the two clubs are battling it out for Upamecano, although there could be competition from elsewhere.

Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United are also in the race for the defender, amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Bayern, as he is still yet to put pen to paper on a new contract to extend his stay at the German club beyond the end of the season.

Talks over a new deal have now stalled, which suggests the 27-year-old could be on the move in the summer, but Bayern would be unwilling to sanction a move during the January transfer window.

Slot is personally a fan of the centre-back, with the Dutchman of the belief he could adapt to life in the Premier League swiftly and stabilise his backline, and there are plenty of indications the Liverpool manager could be on the money.

Hailed as “outstanding” by Joshua Kimmich, the Bayern star is vastly experienced at the top level, having made 60 appearances in the Champions League and won 11 trophies, across what has been a very impressive career to date.

Despite the contract uncertainty, the Frenchman also remains a key player for Bayern Munich, most recently starting in the 2-1 victory against Paris Saint-Germain, making six clearances and winning four duels to keep the reigning European champions at bay.

That said, Liverpool haven’t always been successful when recruiting from the Bundesliga, with Florian Wirtz yet to adapt to life in the Premier League, failing to register a goal or an assist.

As such, it would be less risky to simply go back in for Guehi, who has already proven himself in the Premier League.

"Message to Nuno" – Tony Cottee slams "awful" West Ham decision after loss to Brentford

West Ham put in one of the worst home performances you’re ever likely to see at the London Stadium on Monday evening, with Brentford easing to a 2-0 win almost completely unchallenged.

West Ham suffer humbling Premier League defeat to Brentford at home

In what was Nuno Espírito Santo’s first home game in charge, the Portuguese was greeted with swathes of empty seats as a host of West Ham supporters boycotted the match in protest of David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the ownership.

For the supporters who did show up to welcome Nuno to east London, they weren’t exactly rewarded for their faith.

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham 0-2 Brentford

Keith Andrews’ Brentford absolutely dominated proceedings, having a seismic 17 shots on goal compared to West Ham’s seven, with the home side only managing to test Caoimhin Kelleher once all evening through Jarrod Bowen.

By contrast, it looked like target practice for Brentford at times, who will consider themselves very unfortunate not to come away from West Ham with a much bigger winning margin.

Alphonse Areola made some superb saves on the night, with both Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade hitting the crossbar, while the former also had a goal chalked off by VAR just before half-time.

Nuno’s starting line-up against the Bees was an interesting one to say the least, with Oliver Scarles and Kyle Walker-Peters starting in very different full-back roles on their opposing sides.

Amid West Ham’s current striker crisis, Nuno also elected to play Lucas Paqueta as the number nine — an experiment which largely failed as the Brazilian failed to impress and lost possession 23 times.

As opposed to a more dynamic pairing of Soungoutou Magassa and Freddie Potts, Nuno instead went with Tomas Soucek and Andy Irving as West Ham’s holding midfielders in a 4-2-3-1, with the Hammers’ engine room absolutely dominated by a more energetic and free-flowing Brentford side.

Nuno raised plenty of eyebrows with his bizarre team selection, and that certainly didn’t help West Ham, who set a very unwanted record.

After the defeat to Brentford, West Ham have now lost their first four home games of the season for the first time in the club’s history, and relegation is looking more and more like a major possibility as the weeks go on.

While the players have to take massive responsibility for what was a dismal home performance, Nuno is facing the wrath of critics.

Tony Cottee sends "message to Nuno" after "awful" West Ham decision

Taking to X, West Ham legend Tony Cottee sent a message to Nuno over his starting line-up, branding his player selection “awful” and calling for action.

Paqueta looked disconnected and bereft of support, leaving West Ham’s attack blunt and predictable.

Meanwhile, the midfield pairing of Soucek and Irving also fell short. The former struggled to influence the game creatively, while Irving appeared out of his depth in a demanding Premier League clash.

Their lack of cohesion and creativity in midfield allowed Brentford to dominate possession and control the tempo, with Nuno’s defence also suffering.

The decision to use Walker-Peters and Scarles as on their opposite sides just didn’t work at all, as they struggled to contain Brentford’s wide threats or contribute anything of note going forward.

Jean-Clair Todibo, who came straight back into the starting eleven after being left out of Nuno’s first two matchday squads, didn’t cover himself in glory either, with Max Kilman having a nightmare alongside the Frenchman.

In the aftermath of their loss, Nuno refused to blame his selection, but it undoubtedly contributed towards a real night to forget for West Ham.

Howe reveals "edge" Newcastle will play with vs Arsenal to win "psychological" battle

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has told his players to bring the aggression to their latest attempt to ruffle the feathers of Premier League title contenders Arsenal.

The Gunners finished as runners-up to Liverpool last season and currently lead the pack chasing the champions this time around.

However, they lost to the Magpies on three occasions last season, including both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-final, and have not scored a single goal in their last three visits to St James’ Park with Howe’s men having turned up the heat to get the better of them.

Asked about that edge they appear to have against Mikel Arteta’s side, their 47-year-old head coach said: “I think we play better when there is that edge in our game. Many times, I say that to the players themselves.

“If we’re not in that sweet spot of aggression and competitiveness, we don’t play the same way. I think we have players that really respond to that type of game.

“Of course there’s a balance depending on what style of game we’re in. I’d like to think we can navigate our way through a game and utilise all the skills we have in our psychological framework to help us win.”

Howe could silence Nwaneri by unleashing £40m Newcastle "machine"

Newcastle host Arsenal in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie, leading 2-0.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 5, 2025 Newcastle's season waiting for a jump start

Newcastle’s start to the season has been hampered by the Alexander Isak saga and while they have largely played well, results have not necessarily followed.

Their recent record against Arsenal – they have won four of the last six encounters in all competitions – is a source of satisfaction but Howe knows it will count for little once the first whistle sounds.

He said: “You don’t think about that going into the game, you think, ‘This is a fresh game and a fresh opportunity to impress’, so we’ve always had that line that you draw under the past.

“The past isn’t relevant, but you need to take whatever confidence you can positively and take that with you, so we’ll look to do that. But this is a fresh game and Arsenal are a new team.”

Howe will celebrate four years at St James’ in November, and a great deal has changed since he took to the dugout for the first time against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium – he had been prevented from doing so for Brentford’s visit to Tyneside a week earlier by Covid-19 – and presided over a 2-0 defeat.

He said: “That was a proud day because it was my first day in the dugout, but it was a tough day as well and it, I think looking back, paved the way for how tough it was going to be to stay in the league because at that stage, we were a long way from the team that we are today.

“I think we’ve come a long way in a relatively short period of time, although four years in footballing terms is a lifetime, really. But we’re still here and we’re still fighting.”

Rauf and Raza break United's winning streak to give Qalandars big win

Lahore Qalandars became the first team to beat Islamabad United in nearly 14 months, snapping a PSL-record ten-match winning streak

Danyal Rasool30-Apr-2025Lahore Qalandars became the first team to beat Islamabad United in nearly 14 months, snapping a PSL-record ten-match winning streak, beating United by 88 runs. Qalandars, who were also the last side to beat United before this streak, had the path paved for them by a near-perfect T20 batting performance. Each of the top six scored between 22 and 44, four boasting strike rates in excess of 145, as they posted 209. It was followed by a professional bowling performance that picked up enough wickets at regular intervals to ensure – one partnership aside – that United’s response would not be a serious attempt at a chase.United made five changes to a side that had won each of their first five matches, but Qalandars came out hungrier. Mohammad Naeem has struggled for fluency all season, but signalled a shift with three boundaries on the trot against Ben Dwarshuis in the fourth over, which Fakhar Zaman followed up by with a pair of sixes against Naseem Shah. The team nature of the innings was epitomised by Fakhar launching Jason Holder for a six off the final ball of the powerplay, one ball after a superb bit of fielding saw Naeem run out.Hunain Shah, one of the players brought into the side, couldn’t stem the flow at the end of the powerplay as Abdullah Shafique helped himself to three boundaries in the over, but then again, no United bowler, barring perhaps Imad Wasim, could. Imad deceived Fakhar in the flight to send him back for a brisk 44 off 30 before striking again in his following over to remove Shafique.Sikandar Raza added the finishing touches to Lahore Qalandars’s innings•PCBBut Qalandars’ middle and lower order is becoming one of their strengths, and Daryl Mitchell, Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza took turns making United pay. Mitchell plundered 18 off the usually electric Holder while Billings helped himself to three sixes off five deliveries as United’s fielding discipline fell apart. The irrepressible Raza topped it off by ransacking Dwarshuis’ 19th over for 21 and Holder’s last for another 16 as 96 came off the final six.United are the last side to give up a pursuit of a large total, but the partnerships they usually put together in such situations never looked like forming. A 69-run stand between Andries Gous and Salman Agha offered a glimpse of United’s ability and mindset in games of this nature, keeping Qalandars honest as the asking rate was kept within the realms of possibility. But once Raza darted one through the defences of Agha in the 12th over, the mess it made of his stumps foretold United’s impending fate. Four balls later, Haris Rauf struck to remove Azam Khan, the first of four wickets for Qalandars’ quickest bowler. When he got Gous playing down the wrong line, he had sent United’s most established threat packing after an entertaining 27-ball 41, and unlike Qalandars, United couldn’t get the rest of their batters chipping in to burrow their way through to the total. Raza picked up another couple as the innings began to disintegrate, and when Rauf coaxed Naseem into carving one straight down third’s throat to wrap the game up, United had lost their last nine for 41.The magnitude of the win took Qalandars up to second place, with the team they had so thoroughly vanquished still sitting comfortably up top.

'That's a shame' – Manuel Neuer explains why he couldn't stop Pafos goal as Bayern Munich goalkeeper gives cheeky lesson to journalist after Champions League win

Manuel Neuer was left helpless as Mislav Orsic fired a spectacular strike past him during Bayern Munich’s 5-1 Champions League win over Pafos. The veteran goalkeeper later offered a cheeky explanation in a lively exchange with a reporter, insisting there was little he could do to stop the goal, while, Bayern’s stars Harry Kane and Michael Olise shone once again in a dominant performance.

Orsic stunner beats Neuer

Bayern eased to a commanding 5-1 win over Pafos in the Champions League, but the Cypriot side still found their moment of glory. Croatian forward Orsic unleashed a thunderous strike from more than 20 metres, sending the ball into the top-right corner past a rooted superstar German goalkeeper Neuer. It was Pafos’ only breakthrough of the evening as Bayern’s class ultimately proved too strong.

After the game, Neuer was asked if the strike was unstoppable. He initially answered with a firm “Yes,” but when pressed further, he gave a more detailed explanation with a cheeky jab at the reporter.

“Is that why you reacted a little late?” asked the journalist. Neuer shot back: “No. Have you ever been in goal before?” When the reporter admitted he had not, Neuer quipped: “That’s a shame.”

He then explained: “[Orsic] takes a swing and lets the ball slide over his instep. The shot should have gone in my direction, but because it slides over his instep, you only see late that it goes off to the right.” Turning to the wider press group, he joked: “You’ve played football before, so you know what I’m talking about. So that’s the short answer to the question.”

Kane, Olise and Kimmich dominate in Champions League win

While Neuer’s exchange grabbed attention, Bayern’s outfield stars ensured the win was beyond doubt. German star midfielder Joshua Kimmich controlled the midfield with precision passing and sharp interceptions, keeping the tempo high alongside Aleksander Pavlovic. English hero Kane produced another masterclass with two clinical finish, underlining why he remains Bayern’s talisman. While, Olise was arguably the standout performer, directly contributing to four of Bayern’s goals with two assists and one super strike of his own. Nicolas Jackson also got on the scoresheet, marking his first goal for the club since joining from Chelsea.

For Neuer, the evening was largely uneventful aside from Orsic’s stunner. Bayern’s second straight Champions League win leaves them top of the group with an 8-2 goal difference after two games. Attention now shifts back to the Bundesliga, where Vincent Kompany’s men face a tough test against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend. In Europe, their next fixture sees them take on Club Bruges as the Bavarians look to extend their perfect start.

Romano: Tottenham approach made to sign £192,000-a-week ex-PSG playmaker

Daniel Levy and co appear determined to put Tottenham’s Eberechi Eze humiliation firmly behind them, with Spurs considering a host of new late options for the number 10 role amid their dire need for a playmaker.

The Lilywhites, and Levy in particular, have attracted huge criticism after missing out on a deal for Eze – who had agreed personal terms to join Thomas Frank’s side with an agreement in principle also reached club-to-club.

However, Spurs’ apparent haggling over the 27-year-old’s now-expired £68 million release clause, as well as Palace’s hesitation, ultimately cost them.

Oliver Glasner’s side, at least initially, also wanted Eze to feature in their 1-0 Europa Conference League play-off win on Thursday.

Following this second public transfer humiliation of the transfer window after their famously botched deal for Morgan Gibbs-White, Levy and Frank are now tasked with reacting in the strongest possible manner.

The Gibbs-White deal was, to give Tottenham their due, much more complicated. The north Londoners were ready to pay £60 million and trigger his release clause, only for Evangelos Marinakis to block the deal, threaten legal action and tie the 25-year-old down in never-before-seen fashion.

Eze’s was a case of being beaten to the punch in a more traditional hijack, something which Spurs have done themselves before, but Frank will be devastated to miss out on yet another world-class, Premier League-proven creator.

Tottenham make approach to sign Xavi Simons after Eberechi Eze blow

Speaking of hijacks, according to Fabrizio Romano, it is believed that top Chelsea target and RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons has found his way on to Levy’s transfer shortlist.

Chelsea have been in talks to sign Simons for a long time now, but their need to sell players, whilst not yet fully agreeing a deal with Leipzig, has delayed the Dutchman’s move to London.

Simoms has been a revelation for the Bundesliga side ever since he initially joined on loan at the start of 2023/2024, and this isn’t lost on Levy, with Romano claiming that Tottenham have made contact over Simons in recent days.

As Frank’s side seemingly consider hijacking a deal of their own, it appears they may not have much luck, with the player determined to join Chelsea right now.

The 22-year-old, who joined Leipzig from PSG permanently in January, became their highest-ever paid player in the process – earning £192,000-per-week.
