Perfect for Amorim: Man Utd make contact to sign "special" £25m sensation

Attempting to rebuild their side in the vision of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United have reportedly made their first move to sign an impressive winger who’s valued at just £25m this summer.

Man Utd plot bargain playmaker move

The Red Devils’ financial woes are no secret these days and the summer transfer window may well reflect that. Reinforcements are undoubtedly still needed, however, and INEOS will simply have to seek any bargain opportunities they can get. Meanwhile, as that search goes on they’d be wise to clear out any unwanted stars in search of adding to their own spending power.

That could yet include the likes of Alejandro Garnacho when the summer arrives. Although the Argentine winger has worked his way back into Amorim’s side at times in recent weeks, his Old Trafford future is far from certain amid interest from Serie A giants Napoli. For the right price, it wouldn’t be a great shock to see Manchester United cash in on their young star this summer.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachocelebrates after the match

What that sale would do is hand Amorim the chance to finally stamp his mark at Old Trafford and perhaps welcome a player who would be perfect for his 3-4-2-1 system. According to The Boot Room, Manchester United have now made contact over signing Rayan Cherki from Lyon, asking the French club to keep them informed about the 21-year-old’s transfer status.

Valued at just £25m this summer, the young winger has quite the queue forming for his signature, which includes United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea ahead of the transfer window.

That interest should come as no surprise either, particularly from United, given that the Frenchman would be the perfect candidate to play in one of the two advanced midfield roles in Amorim’s system. A winger by trade at Lyon, Cherki has operated in the past as a No.10 and it could even be said that it is his best role.

"Special" Cherki is perfect for Amorim

Some will feel as though it’s about time that Cherki finds himself on the radar of several top sides. For some time, a top move looked unlikely to balance as questions came over his ability away from possession. Following his most impressive season yet, however, it’s hard for even the likes of Manchester United to ignore the Frenchman’s clear quality.

Dubbed a “special creator” and a “proper 10” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Cherki is exactly the type of player that would thrive in a system that not many have since Amorim’s Old Trafford arrival.

With as many as 18 assists to his name so far this season in all competitions, the 21-year-old would instantly form one of the deadliest partnerships in the Premier League next to Bruno Fernandes and all for just £25m. It’s a deal that ticks all boxes for Manchester United and one they should go all out for this summer.

Shivam Dube is an elite spin-hitter, and he's improving against the short ball

The two-bouncer rule has presented a distinct challenge, but he seems to be finding a way

Rapid Fire: Was Rachin the steal of the auction? Why so much pace at Chepauk?

Chennai boy and Tamil Nadu captain R Sai Kishore had just silenced 33,400 Chennai Super Kings fans at Chepauk, having Ajinkya Rahane stumped. He had bowled 2.1 overs without conceding a boundary, and his figures read 1 for 13.Shivam Dube, though, needed just two balls to turn up the tempo and rekindle the noise, whacking both for sixes. The decibel level zoomed up to 127. It won’t go that high even for MS Dhoni’s diving catch later in the night. The two sixes amply demonstrated Dube’s threat against spin. First, Sai Kishore darted one full and outside off stump from left-arm over, and Dube dropped down on one knee to slog-sweep him over long-on. Sai Kishore immediately switched his angle of attack and went around the wicket, and tried to slant the ball away from Dube’s hitting arc. He still used his reach, however, and crunched the left-arm fingerspinner over midwicket for an even bigger six, taking the shot on even with three fielders back on the leg-side boundary.Related

What India need from the Indian Premier League

Just like that, Sai Kishore, who had topped the wickets charts in the 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Ranji Trophy, had been dumped out of the attack. And having taken down one of India’s best domestic spinners, Dube pressed on to line up Rashid Khan, one of the world’s best spinners, launching him over long-on for another six. It was the wrong’un, but it didn’t matter. Dube can also mess with spinners who take the ball away from him.He had faced only ten balls, and he was already on 24.Since snapping him up at the IPL 2022 auction, CSK have used Dube as a super-specialist against spin. His strike rate of 162.56 against spin is the best among Indian batters since IPL 2022. Among all batters, only Heinrich Klaasen (192.85) and Glenn Maxwell (176.56) have done better in this period.Dube’s tall frame, big reach and brute power have put him among the elite IPL six-hitters in recent times. Since 2022, only Jos Buttler (59) has hit more sixes than his 57, while Andre Russell and Liam Livingstone are level with him.Dube, though, has his limitations: he is vulnerable against pace and more specifically express pace. CSK have found a way to minimise those limitations by deploying him through the middle overs, where most teams tend not to bowl too many overs of out-and-out pace. However, the two-bouncer-per-over rule, which was introduced this season, has presented him with a new challenge.ESPNcricinfo LtdSoon after Dube had walked out to bat in the season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Faf du Plessis had matched Alzarri Joseph up with him. Even Cameron Green dug the ball into the pitch and got it to climb towards Dube’s throat. Around the same time, Dale Steyn posted on X ( formerly Twitter): “Short ball tactic is already showing who can and who can’t… Gana be a long IPL for some batters.”Dube just about survived that short-ball burst from Joseph and saw CSK home. On Tuesday, Spencer Johnson, the Australia quick who had floored Russell with a nasty bouncer last month, tried to rattle Dube with a similar ball. But Dube was ready for it, swivelling quickly on the back foot and hooking a shoulder-high delivery over long leg for six. At the other end, Mohit Sharma tested him with the slower short ball, but Dube coolly rode the bounce and steered it down between short fine leg and deep square leg for four more. All up, Dube scored 23 off 13 short or short-of-a-length balls from seamers on Tuesday. He finished with 51 off 23 balls at a strike rate of 221.73. Until about two years ago, Dube’s response to the bouncer was to duck out of the way or just fend it off. He has now levelled up to the extent that he now has more scoring – and defensive – options against the bouncer.”Definitely, I’ve worked in that way and it’s helping me,” Dube said after winning the Player-of-the-match award. “I know they will bowl short balls at me, [but] I’m ready for that. They [CSK team management] want me to do the same thing that I did today. They want me to go at a higher strike rate against the bowlers, so I’m trying that.”Michael Hussey, the CSK batting coach, credited Dube for understanding his weakness and taking steps to remedy it during the off-season.Shivam Dube has broadened his attacking range against the short ball•AFP/Getty Images”Well, you rewind to maybe one or two years ago, teams would come in and bowl a lot of short balls and he would either duck out of the way or defend. And that’s all he had until he got in and set and then he could maybe play some shots against it,” Hussey said at his post-match press conference.”Now the bowlers are still coming in with the same plan, but he’s been able to score off it as well and he’s been able to find boundaries, if he gets into the right position as well. So that’s a testament to the work that he’s put in behind the scenes and being ready for their plans. And now it’s, you know, back on the bowlers. What are they going to do? Now, are they going to continue with this plan, or will they go away from that? And try something else? We’ll have to wait and see, but I think a lot of credit needs to go to Dube for the amount of work that he’s put in against that particular ball.”Over the last six months or so, Dube’s levelled-up game has also brought him success in T20Is, with back-to-back half-centuries against Afghanistan in January showing what he can do on the international stage. Whether he keeps his place is a question India will need to answer as they tune up for the T20 World Cup, which kicks off on June 1 in the USA and the Caribbean.”I think it [his progress] will hold him in good stead for the [rest of the] IPL,” Hussey said. “But also if he gets opportunities for the country again in the future, I think it’ll hold him in great stead as well.”

T20 Blast's leading middle men eyeing Hundred draft rewards

Laurie Evans and Sam Hain make virtue of versatility in pitch for selection

Matt Roller03-Apr-2022Counties are putting the finishing touches to their pre-season preparations ahead of the first round of Championship fixtures on Thursday, but at the start of the week, 250 England-qualified players will be anxiously checking their phones. The Hundred draft will be staged behind closed doors on Monday morning, with picks due to be confirmed publicly on Tuesday afternoon, and uncontracted domestic players will be competing for 25 vacant spots across the eight teams’ squads on top of the 17 overseas slots that will be filled. There are some roles where the supply of domestic options will massively outweigh the demand. With the best players in the T20 Blast generally shuffling up the order for their counties in order to face as many balls as possible, there is a huge stock of opening batters, while there are also plenty of domestic left-arm spinners up for grabs. But there is a scarcity value on middle-order batters, which was evident in the first season of the Hundred: the champions, Southern Brave, used Alex Davies – generally a top-three batter for Lancashire – as a No. 4, while beaten finalists Birmingham Phoenix often picked Gloucestershire opener Miles Hammond to bat at No. 5.Related

“It seemed like teams were thinking ‘we need a batsman’ rather than thinking ‘we need a No. 5’ so it was a hard thing to balance your team,” Rob Key, who covered the Hundred’s first season for Sky, says. “Some teams ended up with seven really good batsmen, but five of them were top-order players. And then some teams got to the thing itself and thought ‘shit, one of these guys will have to bat No. 5.'”As a result, the handful of specialist middle-order players who are available on Monday are hoping that their versatility will make them desirable choices, as Hundred teams learn from the mistakes they made in the competition’s first season. There will be further opportunities through the wildcard draft or inevitable replacement vacancies before the tournament start in August, but the draft will give players an indication of where they sit in teams’ thinking.”There’s quite a few guys around the county circuit in the same boat as me,” says Sam Hain, Warwickshire’s all-time leading T20 run-scorer who made a single appearance in the Hundred’s first season after signing for Manchester Originals as an injury replacement for Wayne Madsen. “It is nerve-wracking: you don’t know what teams are looking for and how they’re looking to shape their squads. All I can do is sit back and see what cards I’m dealt.””It’s exciting: I could end up anywhere,” adds Laurie Evans, who played one of the Hundred’s standout innings in 2021, rescuing Oval Invincibles’ run chase against London Spirit, but could not agree a contract with them before the retention window closed. “When people ask me where I bat, I could probably say No. 1 to No. 7. Added to my experience, that hopefully makes me quite a good pick for most squads: you can chuck me in most places and I’ll find a way of making a success of it.”Evans was offered a contract at Invincibles but opted to return to the draft, with his stock at an all-time high after his match-winning performance in the Big Bash final and a lingering frustration about his role last year – never coming in before No. 5, and once as low as No. 8.

“I love playing at The Oval and we had a great time last year,” he says. “But I was picked up low in the draft [in 2019], and even though I went up a couple of spots [in the retentions before 2021], I still felt like I wanted to bat a bit higher and get up the order. I just felt like there was an opportunity to get a high spot in the draft and batting up the order might come with that. I looked at the Oval line-up and thought I wasn’t really going to get to bat higher than No. 5.”I loved batting in the middle-order in the Big Bash. You don’t necessarily sit at the top of the runs but in terms of impact, I felt like it couldn’t have gone much better. I’d love to open for obvious reasons – everyone would – but I think my real value lies in the middle order, in terms of handling pressure. That’s where I come into my own.”While Evans was scoring runs in Australia, Hain was in Bangladesh, spending three weeks working on his game against spin as a back-up overseas player for Fortune Barishal in the BPL. Hain was overlooked in the initial Hundred draft in 2019, his career strike rate of 124.41 counting against him, and has used that snub as the catalyst for improvement in the last two seasons.”The decision got made for me and I realised I couldn’t rest on my laurels,” Hain says. “I’ve felt like I’ve always had the shots but I’ve had to really grasp a change in mindset. Either you go with the times or you get left behind.”Across the last two Blast seasons, Hain has averaged 45.46 while striking at 139.18. “I hope there’s a sense of versatility there,” he adds. “I’ve found a lot of my success at No. 4 once I worked out a gameplan there for each scenario. It’s quite a tricky position because you’ve got to be versatile in your method. I feel like my game is able to adapt to any scenario and that’s one of my main selling points.”There are several other options for teams looking to plug that gap. Overseas players like David Miller, Colin Munro and Rilee Rossouw are expected to be available for the vast majority of the season, while Ian Cockbain, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Delray Rawlins and Adam Hose all have experience in the middle order. Previous drafts have made one thing clear: teams will spring one or two surprises along the way.

Shohei Ohtani Not Satisfied Despite Historic Performance in Dodgers Loss

As he has done so often in his already-impressive MLB career, Shohei Ohtani achieved a feat no other baseball player has accomplished. Ohtani, who made his seventh start of the season on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, pitched four innings for the first time in 2025, striking out eight batters while allowing no walks and just one earned run. At the dish, Ohtani belted a two-run homer to give himself some run support in the bottom of the third inning.

Since RBI became an official statistic in 1920, Ohtani is the only MLB player to hit a homer, strike out eight-plus hitters, drive in more runs than he allowed and draw more walks than he allowed, according to OptaSTATS. For good measure, Ohtani's third inning homer was also the 1000th hit of his career. In other words, he was quite busy.

The kicker? The Dodgers lost 5-3.

Ohtani, speaking to reporters through his interpreter Will Ireton after the game, expressed his belief that he could have done more to help the Dodgers win, particularly at the plate.

"A really close game throughout," Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton. "I think it would have been a huge win for us if we were able to flip the script. I could have done better with the quality of at-bats in the middle part of the game."

It's hard to believe that Ohtani could have done more, given just how much he accomplished on the field. But the mindset is admirable nonetheless. He did go on to acknowledge that it was a big day for him "personally", noting he was pleased to pitch through the fourth inning for the first time this season.

But it's clear that he would have been more pleased had the Dodgers managed to earn a win. And wins are becoming even more paramount for Los Angeles, which holds just a two-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West.

South Africa look to keep winning as Pakistan hope to make a late charge

High-flying South Africa take on deflated Pakistan

Big picture – Can Pakistan find some batting firepower?South Africa have already booked a semi-final spot. Despite not having won a match so far in the tournament, Pakistan still have a slim chance of sneaking into the knockouts, provided they win their last two matches by huge margins and other results also go their way. With no teams ruled out of contention just yet (at least until Monday’s Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match finishes), there is plenty on the line in every game. This tournament has now arrived at its pointy end.Pakistan’s bowlers will perhaps still be buoyed by their most recent performance. Fatima Sana and Co. struck early and then repeatedly against England, restricting one of the better batting units in the tournament to a low score that Pakistan looked likely to chase down, before a second spell of rains washed the rest of that match out. As had been the case in that game, the rains that have held sway in Colombo will likely envenom seamers, who may get the ball to move appreciably off a slightly moist deck. Often, teams prefer to bat first at the Khettarama – a venue that is notoriously tricky for chasing sides, especially under lights. But at this time of year, bowling first is an advantage too.Related

Bangladesh, Pakistan and SL fall behind in the power game

In fact, Pakistan’s batters were on the receiving end of some good seam bowling in Saturday’s match against New Zealand, when they had been 92 for 5 in an already rain-reduced innings, before more rains ended that match. South Africa have experienced seamers like Masabata Klaas and Marizanne Kapp in their XI. Although they haven’t quite lit this World Cup up so far, both bowlers are very capable of bowling themselves into better rhythm on a helpful deck. The tougher the surface is to bat on, however, the more Pakistan will feel they can compete. As batting is by a distance the weaker of their two main discipline, a low-scoring match would suit them best. In fact, it had been a low-scoring game in which Pakistan last took South Africa down, roughly a month ago in Lahore.South Africa’s batting, which, as Sri Lanka found out on Friday, is led off by one of the best opening combinations going, is looking in increasingly good shape. They appear to have left the embarrassment of being blown away for 69 in their tournament opener well and truly behind them.1:15

South Africa WWWWLIn the spotlight – Fatima Sana and Nonkululeko MlabaPakistan captain Fatima Sana has been putting together an excellent World Cup, with nine wickets at an average of 16 so far. Almost 15% of her overs have also been maidens (she has bowled more maidens than any other bowler in this tournament). Against England, her last outing with the ball, Sana bowled some vicious inseaming deliveries, presenting a beautiful wobble-seam, and extracting substantial movement to send balls shooting between right-hand batters’ bats and pads. Both South Africa’s opening batters are right-hand batters. Expect Sana to repeat that same mode of attack against them.Although in T20Is Nonkululeko Mlaba has been a force for some time, this World Cup may be remembered as the tournament in which she stepped up her ODI bowling. She is by a huge distance South Africa’s most penetrative bowler of the tournament, having claimed 11 wickets at an average of 15.18, with an economy rate of 4.63. Pakistan’s batters will know that even if they survive the seamers, they have one of the world’s smartest spinners to counter later in the innings.Pitch and conditions: Can the rain please stop?I think we can call it now – the northeast monsoon appears to have properly arrived in Colombo, which makes a match uninterrupted by rain even less likely. There will likely be juice in the pitch for the seamers, but it is a rare match at the Khettarama where the ball does not take significant turn as well.0:58

This is more than twice as good as her numbers at home (average 51.18, SR 71.4). Since 2020, these teams have played each other ten times. Pakistan have won two of those games, both at home. Jude Bellingham could return to boyhood club Birmingham as Tom Brady's side reveal plans to re-sign 'greatest player on the planet' amid new stadium announcement

Birmingham City have been outlining their exciting vision for the future of the club, and that could include bringing home-grown superstar Jude Bellingham back to his roots. England international Bellingham left his boyhood team in 2020 when joining Borussia Dortmund, and is now on the books of Real Madrid. He could retrace steps to the West Midlands at some stage.

  • Retired shirt number: When Bellingham left Birmingham

Bellingham made his debut for the Blues aged just 16 years and 38 days. It did not take long for his potential to be noted, with heavyweight outfits from across Europe lining up to make a play for his signature. Manchester United were among those to be left disappointed.

The talented youngster made just 44 appearances for Birmingham before heading to Germany, but still saw his No.22 shirt retired – proving how highly he was regarded. He could not have imagined back then that an opportunity to grace that jersey again could present itself.

Birmingham are, however, daring to dream big. They have unveiled plans for a stunning new 62,000-seater stadium. That project, which comes at the cost of £1.2 billion, is intended to help propel the Blues to the top of domestic and continental games.

  • Stunning design: Birmingham reveal the Powerhouse Stadium

Securing promotion out of the Championship and into the Premier League represents one of the first steps down that path, and success of that kind could eventually lead to the Blues being in a position to re-sign local hero Bellingham.

Chairman Tom Wagner admits as much, saying of bringing Bellingham back to what will be known as the Powerhouse Stadium: "I think Jude is the greatest player on the planet today and we haven’t seen anywhere near his full potential yet. Not just as a player, but also what he can do for a community, what he can do as a leader. If we can provide him with a platform to achieve his full potential, well that’s a great story. It’s a great Birmingham story, it’s a great England story and a great homecoming story."

The promotional video for Birmingham’s grand stadium project features a number of familiar faces, including Bellingham. In that, the 22-year-old says "oh wow" when seeing the impressive structure. He goes on to ask: "When’s it going to be ready?"

After it is pointed out to him that construction will take around "five years", Bellingham stares into the distance deep in thought – in a hint at him considering an emotional return to where it all began.

  • Brady on board: Birmingham want NFL games

Birmingham have the backing to make anything possible, with their Knighthead ownership group pumping considerable funding into the club. They also boast NFL legend Tom Brady as a minority investor. The seven-time Super Bowl winner could help to bring competitive American football to the West Midlands in the future.

Wagner has said of the Blues’ stadium venture: "The ground will definitely have a naming-rights deal, ideally before we even put a shovel in the ground. We have an ambition to host any and all events, like NFL, international global football for men and women.

"[We expect it to be] the most environmentally-sound stadium that will ever be built. Maybe we look like modest lunatics to be [unveiling these plans] while we are in the Championship but we feel very good about where we are."

Premier League promotion: Birmingham in 2025-26

Wagner added that the development would “change this city forever” and could be used 365 days a year. A striking stadium will form part of a wider £2.5-3 billion ‘Sports Quarter’ that boasts housing, shops, offices, hotels and other entertainment facilities. Wagner added: "We are putting the city and the club on a trajectory towards greatness. It will be a place where the world’s best want to perform."

Birmingham are currently sat 11th in the Championship table, ahead of a return to action against Norwich on Saturday, but are only four points adrift of the play-off places and may yet form part of the promotion picture in 2025-26.

'He's a football genius' – Estevao Willian backed to challenge for Ballon d'Or after earning regular spot in Brazil & Chelsea lineups at 18

Estevao Willian has been labelled a "football genius" and backed to challenge for the Ballon d'Or after becoming a regular for both Chelsea and Brazil at the age of 18. The youngster formally joined the Blues this summer from Palmeiras and has already established himself as an important player under Enzo Maresca.

'Messinho' enjoying fine start at Chelsea

Estevao, also known as 'Messinho', has appeared in 16 matches across all competitions for Chelsea in his debut season at the club, scoring four goals and providing one assist.

Last month, Maresca lavished praise on the young winger: "It’s exciting to see him. The good thing about Estevao, sometimes with young players we are worried, because they have one good game and they think they are already [at the] top. Estavao, he’s playing well but he’s polite, he’s humble, he wants to learn. I think his family are also doing a big job there, so we are very happy not only with the way he’s performing. But he’s a nice boy, a good boy. In the Premier League he needs a little bit more time. I think he’s more [of a] winger, but he’s going to finish playing inside the pitch, in the pockets.

"For me personally, he's fantastic because he's a special player, but at the same time you don't have to be worried. Now he's going to play one game, two games, score, and he's already thinking that he knows how good he is."

AdvertisementGetty ImagesEstevao backed to challenge for Ballon d'Or

Ahead of Brazil's international friendly against Tunisia on Tuesday night, opposing manager Sami Trabelsi spoke highly of Estevao, telling reporters: "I think he's a new football genius emerging, very young. I think he's doing very well and he's a player who can be expected to be among the greats, among the best in the world, certainly, in the coming years.

"If he manages to have good performances or win titles, whether with his club or national team, he will be among the players who, in the coming years, could even compete for the Ballon d'Or. He brings many solutions, a lot of technique, a lot of genius. There aren't many players of that level, of that category of genius, on the world stage."

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti added: "It's a surprise to see such a young player with this kind of talent. He's very precise and very incisive. Brazil has a guaranteed future with him."

Chelsea 'lucky to have' Estevao

After scoring a goal in Brazil's 2-0 friendly win over Senegal last week, Ancelotti claimed that Chelsea are lucky to have a talent like him in their ranks.

The former Real Madrid boss said: "Estevao has an incredible amount of talent. It’s a surprise this level at his age. He’s good at finishing, has a lot of magic… and he works very hard. I can say this: with Estevao, Brazil have a guaranteed future. He’s a very talented player. He is able to show every game, in Chelsea too, and he doesn’t need a lot of minutes to show his quality. He can play five minutes and he can show his quality. I think the Brazil national team is really lucky to have him, and also Chelsea."

The tough love had an immediate effect on the Chelsea wonderkid. Estevao responded by scoring twice in the subsequent 5-0 friendly win over South Korea, and since then has continued to impress in the famous yellow shirt of Brazil.

Update revealed on future of Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa with Liverpool keen

Ezri Konsa has been linked with a move away from Aston Villa, with Liverpool keen on him, and now a fresh update has emerged regarding his future.

The 28-year-old has matured into such an important player for the Villans, becoming a key starter and coming right into the prime years of his career.

In fact, Konsa will even be hoping of starting for England at the 2026 World Cup, with he and John Stones likely to battle to play alongside Marc Guehi in the right-sided centre-back spot for the Three Lions.

Worryingly, the Englishman has been linked with various clubs in recent weeks and months, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City mentioned as potential options for him.

Konsa isn’t out of contract at Villa until the summer of 2028, and now a new update has dropped regarding his future at the Premier League club.

Key latest on Konsa's Aston Villa future

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown claimed that Aston Villa won’t even entertain the idea of allowing Konsa to leave in the near future, with the player himself happy at the club.

“Aston Villa have been an example in recent years of how to build a team. It’s a testament to Villa’s recruitment that so many of their best players are attracting interest. The players they’ve brought in, like Konsa and Rogers for example, have reached new levels since they arrived and proved to be very important players for them.

“So Konsa, for example, has impressed at Villa and got himself into the England team. That only invites more interest, because he’s playing on a bigger stage, attracting more eyes on his performances, and that leads to more speculation. So Villa then have a hell of a job behind the scenes trying to keep him at the club.

“From what I’m told, they’re not massively concerned about his future, because by all accounts he’s happy at Villa and he’s been a crucial part of their success. Emery has no plans to let him go because of how important he is to Villa, and I think Villa will be confident that they can keep him. Even with teams like Liverpool or Chelsea looking at him, that won’t chance Villa’s position.”

This will come as a relief to Villa supporters, with Konsa arguably now one of the first names on Unai Emery’s team sheet, recently being hailed as “excellent” by Troy Deeney.

As mentioned, he now feels like he is at his peak, which should remain the same for another three or four years or so, and if Villa are to continue heading in the right direction, they cannot afford to sell their best players to teams who are higher than they are in the table.

Morkel 'blown away' by Bumrah's rhythm as India's preparation intensifies

India bowling coach Morne Morkel has been “blown away” by Jasprit Bumrah’s rhythm and intensity in the three sessions the team have had so far on their tour of England, but reiterated that the management would be “smart” in managing him through the summer.Prior to departure, head coach Gautam Gambhir said it was likely Bumrah would play in just three of the five Tests, as part of his workload management given his history of back injuries. But India are yet to take on call on which Tests he’ll play – that will depend on the state of the series and how Bumrah is holding up.Related

“Bumrah knows how to get himself ready, he knows how to prepare,” Morkel said on Wednesday. “I was blown away to see the energy on the ball the last three days. That’s very exciting to see. I’m happy his body is in good shape at the moment.”We’ll manage him with that. We’ll be smart with him because he’s obviously key for us, but in terms of the first three net sessions, lot to be excited watching him bowl with the Dukes ball.”The Indians will tune up for the series-opener at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 by playing a three-day intra-squad fixture from June 6 in Beckenham. The match is expected to be a closed-doors affair, with the teams drawn from players in the Test squad as well as those from the India A team that played two four-day matches against the England Lions. The make-up of India’s bowling attack will be a key focus area in the lead-up to the first Test. Apart from Bumrah, India have Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep as their frontline pace options, with Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy as the seam-bowling allrounders.Jasprit Bumrah prepares to bowl at the nets in Beckenham•Bipin Patel

It remains to be seen if India will prefer Thakur or Reddy as their fourth seamer, if they are inclined to include a seam-bowling allrounder instead of a specialist fourth quick or a second spinner. Thakur and Reddy looked rusty in both India A games, and neither seems certain to start at Leeds.Morkel, though, has high expectations from Reddy.”The more bowling options we can have, that’s great. He’s skillful. He’s a guy that can bowl that magical ball, so for him it’s about creating that consistency, it’s something we want to work on, it’s important for his game as well,” Morkel said of Reddy. “I’ve had conversations where I’ve challenged him to bowl a bit more.”I want to see the ball more in his hands, we all know what he can do with the bat. For a team, if we can have the bowling options especially in these conditions, I think he’ll be exciting and can complement this bowling attack.”Morkel believes the key for India to start well will be for their bowlers to hit the ground running immediately against an aggressive England line-up that will look to take toll of errors ruthlessly.”England – the brand of cricket they play, we need to be on top of our game,” he said. “We can’t afford to find our feet in this series. That’s one of the things that has impressed me so much in the two days, the few sessions we’ve had.”The guys have stepped up by themselves, they’ve taken the ownership and responsibility, they’ve realised it’s going to be a tough tour. That’s the pleasing thing for us as coaches, to see guys taking that leadership and ownership at practice.”
