Everton: Dyche must drop ‘diabolical’ £40k-p/w dud after Luton disaster

Everton are a club that never lets their fans get too buoyed, as the slightest shred of positivity is always one torrid display away from tearing them back down to earth.

After two spirited away wins in quick succession, the expectation was that Luton Town would pose little challenge at Goodison Park, and yet Sean Dyche's side once again faltered.

Although such a devastating result is the cause of widespread underperformance across the team, Ashley Young once again stood out as a man who should not have been playing.

How has Ashley Young been playing?

With the visitors only really boasting one game plan, which involved a long ball up to Carlton Morris, or a deep pass in behind the full-backs, it made little sense for the former Burnley boss to recall the 38-year-old after the young Nathan Patterson had impressed in midweek.

After all, whilst his experience and quality are invaluable, he was left woefully exposed down the right flank, where both of the goals were subsequently forged.

Having to concede corner after corner as he failed to contain his opposite winger, the former Manchester United trickster earned a deservedly terrible 5.8 rating, the worst of anyone on the pitch.

Not only was the corner for their opener conceded down his side, but his slow reactions on the line allowed Tom Lockyer to deflect the ball in. Then, as the second came in from a free kick, again it was conceded around his area, which allowed the Hatters to extend their lead.

The vastly-experienced £40k-per-week full-back was woefully exposed, and yet offered little in the way of attacking impetus either, hitting the target with just one of his four crosses, and failing in both of the two attempted dribbles. To make matters worse, Young would only win one of the five duels he competed in, at an 80% failure rate, via Sofascore.

If his defending against Villa in the Premier League was "diabolical" in the eyes of pundit Andy Hinchcliffe live on Sky Sports Main Event [20th August, 15:40pm], then there are no words to describe his display on Saturday. Therefore, he must be dropped.

Who could replace Ashley Young?

What made such a torturous afternoon for the ageing dud so much more frustrating is that Patterson was there on the bench, marking a far better solution

After all, the Scottish international was aggressive in his attempts to quell John McGinn on Wednesday, pushing up high to make three tackles, one interception and two clearances whilst contributing to the press which earned them success, via Sofascore.

He is younger and boasts the increased energy required to subdue the opposition, and against Luton would have been far more suited to dealing with the pace on the break they offered. Perhaps his youthfulness could have prevented some of the six corners they conceded, all of which marked massive threats.

Although the former Rangers man is still incredibly raw, and far from the finished product, his potential deserves to earn a starting spot over an old free transfer who realistically should be resigned to a backup role.

nathan-patterson-everton-sean-dyche-premier-league-james-garner-england

Especially given the glowing recommendation Patterson received last year, with Danny Murphy noting:

"He’s been terrific. I’ve been absolutely blown away by him, honestly. Looks a real talent, really good athlete, nice passer of the ball, goes forward at will and doesn't mind defending one-on-one".

It marks a no-brainer for Dyche to make this switch for their next home game, which has swiftly evolved into a must-win as they host AFC Bournemouth at a Goodison Park ground where they have seemingly forgotten how to win.

Billings and Sixers fall one six short of victory

Hobart Hurricanes claimed their third straight win, by the skin of their teeth, scraping past the winless Sydney Sixers in a last-ball thriller in Hobart. The Sixers needed 18 off the last three balls and Sam Billings, who played a blinder to take his side to the brink, struck consecutive sixes off Tymal Mills to move everyone to the edge of their seat.Mills had missed his lengths twice, and off the last ball he missed a third time, delivering a length ball in the slot that could have sailed into the stands, but Billings swung too soon and collected nothing but fresh air to come up just short.A very even batting performance, led by D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade, and finished superbly by Dan Christian helped the Hurricanes post a competitive 6 for 170. The Sixers top order slumped again before Billings and Jordan Silk dragged them back. But Christian’s sensational 19th over, conceding just six runs, gave Mills 21 runs to play with in the 20th and it proved enough in the end.The Hurricanes’ finals hopes remain intact while the Sixers’ sixth straight loss has effectively ended their campaign.Short slowed a fractionShort has been in the form of his life with 284 runs for the tournament striking at an impressive 153.51. But the Sixers were able to keep him quieter than usual. It helped that they kept him off strike. He faced just three balls in the first three overs. He lost opening partner Alex Doolan early but Wade stepped up and scored freely, striking two fours and a six off Jackson Bird in the third over. Ben Dwarshuis tied up Short. He scored four off nine balls before his first boundary. Then a glorious 107m straight drive off Daniel Sams clicked him into gear. Short and Wade put together a steady 77-run stand and looked to be laying a perfect platform before Wade fell in the 11th over for 41.Getty Images

Abbott atonesSean Abbott has had a rough tournament to-date. Last year’s leading wicket-taker in the BBL had taken just three wickets at an average of 52 this season, more than double is career average, and an economy rate of 9.63, compared to his career rate of 8.87. Those numbers looked set to worsen after his first over in Hobart, conceding 11 with two fours. But he responded well. Johan Botha re-introduced him in the 12th over. Short flicked a six over midwicket second ball, but Abbott got him two balls later with a well-directed slower ball that was miscued to mid-off. Abbott then bowled 10 dot balls in his next 14 deliveries, including the wickets of George Bailey and Ben McDermott, and conceded just one four. His 3 for 27 from four overs put the Hurricanes in a hole at 5 for 132 with 18 balls left. But Christian and Simon Milenko struck six fours and a six between them to get the total to 170.Top-order troublesAcross their first five losses the Sixers only once got through 10 overs without losing three wickets. They failed to do so again in Hobart. They had the perfect start with Milenko delivering a no-ball first ball of the innings. Jason Roy hit the free hit for six to start with seven off one legal ball. They got 14 from the over. But then Roy awkwardly tried to reverse sweep the first ball he saw from Clive Rose before hitting a waist-high catch to cover with the next. Nic Maddinson never looked comfortable in his six-ball stay. Daniel Hughes chewed 35 balls for his 33 on return from injury. The early wickets allowed Cameron Boyce and Christian to bowl five overs after the Powerplay for just 25 runs.Silk and SamThe Sixers needed 101 from 54 balls but their form players, Silk and Billings, didn’t panic. They chipped away with a boundary an over to keep the required run rate within arms-reach. When Silk holed out to long-on they needed 47 from 21. Billings kept going. He struck three consecutive fours off the near-untouchable Jofra Archer in the 18th over. One was via a fortunate top-edge but the other two were shots of incredible skill. He pulled a well-executed bouncer and sliced a good yorker into gaps. Christian’s mix of slower balls in the 19th over looked to have saved the game for the Hurricanes as neither Billings nor Dwarshuis could find the rope. But Mills did not execute his skills quite as well and Billings almost made him pay with the game.

West Ham In The Race For "Complete" Teenage Coufal Upgrade

West Ham United are in the race to sign one of Spain’s most gifted and promising youngsters…

What’s the latest West Ham transfer news?

According to Marca Valladolid, the Irons are in a fight to sign Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda, after Crystal Palace opened talks with the Spanish club with a view to making an offer.

Chelsea and Sporting CP are also said to be interested in the right-back.

As previously reported by SPORT, the 18-year-old is valued at around €15m (£13m) by Valladolid, who recently suffered relegation to La Liga 2.

Would Ivan Fresneda be a good signing for West Ham?

The defender was born in the Spanish capital, and joined Real Madrid’s youth setup in 2014, before leaving the club in 2018. He eventually signed for Valladolid in 2020, and despite only forging 26 appearances for the senior side, has firmly established himself as one of the continent’s most eye-catching talents.

This perspective has been reinforced by Matt Clark of the LaLiga Lowdown, who highlighted Fresneda’s accomplished profile and limitless potential, saying: “He is a remarkably complete right-back despite his young age, balancing his defensive duties with the odd attack too.

"He has that coveted combination of physicality and technical ability. Tall but agile, quick and athletic, he is also strong in the tackle and reads the game very well for someone so green when it comes to first-team football.”

The teen’s defensive acumen is mirrored by his rank within the best 9% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for blocks per 90 and clearances per 90, as well as the highest 21% for tackles per 90.

Moreover, The Athletic revealed he is a high-quality ball winner, winning 75% of his duels, with only one LaLiga full-back, his teammate Luis Perez, possessing a better success rate.

Following the end of last year, Fresneda was just one of seven players aged 17 or younger to play over 1,000 minutes of first-team football in Europe’s big five leagues, to signify his growing quality and importance to his team.

Ivan-Fresneda

Therefore, a player on this trajectory is more than capable of becoming a useful asset for a Premier League side. From a West Ham perspective, Fresneda can be viewed as an ageing and less dynamic Vladimir Coufal.

The 31-year-old has been a solid and reliable servant for the Hammers, having featured in 91 of the club’s last 116 domestic games.

His lack of pace, directness, and attacking threat are major drawbacks to his game, and he fails to embody the full nature of the ‘modern full-back.’

Fresneda, who played for a far worse side last year, demonstrated that he can outperform Coufal in this respect. Over the past 365 days, the prodigy scores better than the Czech for progressive carries per 90 (2.48 vs 2.37), successful take-ons per 90 (0.77 vs 0.13), and pass completion per 90 (77% vs 62.2%).

Whilst his offensive output isn’t prolific, as he failed to record any assists last term, this is mainly due to the lack of quality in Valladolid forwards, who managed just 33 goals in the league, the second-lowest in the division.

Therefore, Fresneda, who has been hailed as someone with “good technique” and “great energy” by Emmanuel Petit, could flourish at the London Stadium.

Phillips and Astle picked in updated New Zealand squad

Colin Munro and Matt Henry back in the ODI set-up after missing out on Champions Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-2017Wicketkeeper-batsman Glenn Phillips and legspinner Todd Astle are among the players added to New Zealand’s squad for the upcoming limited-overs series in India. Also in the updated squad are batsmen Colin Munro, George Worker and Henry Nicholls, and fast bowler Matt Henry. These updates to the squad were made following the fourth one-dayer between New Zealand A and India A – the New Zealand selectors had named a truncated squad earlier, and said it would be expanded based on the A-team’s performances in India. While Phillips and Astle have already debuted for New Zealand, neither had played ODI cricket. Phillips impressed with a century in the second one-dayer against India A, and might be asked to take up keeping duties in the XI. Tom Latham, however, remains the frontrunner to replace the retired Luke Ronchi behind the stumps. Astle was the most economical of the New Zealand A bowlers in the one-dayers, his five wickets in three games coming at just over five an over.Munro and Henry are more familiar faces, and could have big roles to fill. Munro is expected to open the innings with Martin Guptill, with coach Mike Hesson specifically having said the side is looking for brisker starts than those provided by the Guptill-Latham combine. “We need to generate a strike-rate at the top,” Hesson had said, adding later in his press conference: “The beauty of Colin is he is a boundary hitter. He doesn’t so much adapt to conditions, he plays one way – batting in the middle order can make that difficult, and he has had success since we moved him up in T20s.” Munro will hope to impress in this new role if indeed given it, and finally firm up a place in the squad – he has been in and out of the 15 this year, playing the home series against Australia but missing the South Africa series, then playing the series in Ireland but being left out of the Champions Trophy squad.Meanwhile with Mitchell McClenaghan opting out of a central contract so he can focus on T20 leagues and having been left out of the squad for this series, there’s an opening on the fast-bowling front which Henry will hope to fill. He had been left out of the Champions Trophy squad himself, so is on the comeback trail.Worker played in the series against Ireland in May, batting at No. 3, but was also not picked Champions Trophy. Hesson hinted that he too might be an option to open in India, should the need arise. Nicholls, who has been captaining New Zealand A in India, is yet to play an ODI in 2017.Ross Taylor and Worker will return to New Zealand after the ODIs, with legspinner Ish Sodhi and the big-hitting Tom Bruce taking their spots in the T20 squad.Gavin Larsen, New Zealand selector and New Zealand A manager, said of the additions: “Todd has been one of the best white-ball players in domestic cricket the last few seasons and he’s backed that up with a strong showing for New Zealand A. Todd brings all-round skill to the squad, quality legspin, is athletic in the field as well as being able to contribute with the bat.”Glenn has made an immediate effect in domestic cricket and has certainly taken his opportunity over here with New Zealand A, including an outstanding 140 not out. Glenn is an option for us with the gloves in both Twenty20s and ODIs, so we feel we have our bases covered with the 15 we’ve picked.”The team will play two warm-up 50-overs games, before the three ODIs kick off on October 22 in Mumbai. The three-T20 series begins on November 1 in Delhi.ODI squad: Kane Williamson (capt), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, George WorkerT20 squad: Kane Williamson (capt), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Tom Bruce, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee

Offspinner Mark Craig and fast bowler Doug Bracewell were among a handful of players not considered for the tour due to injury.New Zealand Cricket selector Gavin Larsen, who will be the team’s manager on the tour, said such A-team programmes were vital to the senior team’s development. “Going into a significantly different environment to that of the New Zealand domestic scene is a huge opportunity to promote player growth,” Larsen said. “Preparing for international cricket is challenging, so this is a great chance for these players to improve their game in subcontinent conditions.”The party heading to India features three wicketkeepers in Tom Blundell, Tim Seifert and Phillips, and they will have former Otago gloveman Martyn Croy to work with them, Larsen said. “Having Marty Croy there to work with our three young wicketkeepers will be of immense benefit to their development. West Ham Could Banish Soucek By Signing £35m ‘Master’

West Ham United are reportedly ready to continue their pursuit of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, as David Moyes remains on the lookout for reinforcements.

The Hammers must welcome new signings this window, particularly following the loss of Declan Rice and the £105m profit made by the gargantuan sale.

What’s the latest on James Ward-Prowse to West Ham?

As reported by The Athletic on Sunday, the Irons could secure the signing of Ward-Prowse for a reduced figure of £35m this summer.

The initial asking price from the Saints is said to be at £40m, making West Ham’s opening offer of £20m one that disgruntled the freshly relegated side.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

Considering that the Englishman could fill the gap left by Rice, as well as bring an abundance of experience to the side, Moyes must act fast should he wish to finally get the deal over the line now that his price tag is clear.

How good is James Ward-Prowse?

Notorious for his expertise in set play on the south coast, the 28-year-old could be the ideal capture at the London Stadium this summer in the middle of the park.

Despite being part of a struggling Southampton side, the Portsmouth-born gem recorded 13 goal contributions last season, netting nine and assisting four, appearing in all of his side’s league fixtures, via FBref.

Lauded as a “master” for his dead-ball play by members of the media, the midfield maestro has far more in his locker than being a specialist in that area.

After a season threatened with relegation masked by the success of winning the UEFA Conference League, the Hammers must seek some creativity in order to lift themselves back up the table and Ward-Prowse could be that man.

One area they must address is the midfield, with captain and The Athletic’s pick for player of the season, Rice, embarking on a new venture in north London.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

While primarily, his vacancy must be filled with some urgency, the potential capture of Ward-Prowse could elevate the overall performance in the engine room, in a player that could challenge the current midfielders on show.

Despite being an integral member of Moyes’ squad, Tomas Soucek could find himself ousted by the Saints captain, who performed at a higher level to the Czech Republic international last term.

As per FBref, the Englishman averaged 5.05 progressive passes and 4.73 final third passes per 90 in the 2022/23 Premier League, showcasing the strengths he has over Soucek who averaged just 2.81 progressive passes and 2.14 final third passes per 90.

Despite the West Ham ace averaging a higher record of tackles per 90 with 2.46 to Ward-Prowse’s 1.74, the Southampton general has the fundamentals to unleash a challenge in the middle of the park, and to provide a threat going forward, which the Czech lacks.

Recording an average of 1.98 key passes per 90, the “unbelievable” talent, as heralded by former teammate Oriol Romeu, could add the creativity integral to unlocking the Hammers’ attack, with Soucek averaging just 0.48 per 90, via FBref.

Moyes could replenish his midfield with a further attacking option, in a player with 343 Premier League appearances and a host of attributes that could bolster the side.

Arsenal Have "Held Talks" With "Special" £50m Gem

Arsenal have already strengthened their midfield this summer by signing Kai Havertz, while Declan Rice is set to undergo a medical at the club and could be announced by the start of next week, as Edu Gaspar looks set to give Mikel Arteta all the tools at his disposal to challenge for the Premier League title.

The signing of the West Ham United skipper may not be the last midfield addition of the summer, however, amid the club's apparent pursuit of Southampton's Romeo Lavia.

Is Romeo Lavia going to Arsenal?

Graeme Bailey of 90min has dropped a recent update regarding Arsenal’s pursuit of the Saints midfielder, saying: “Romeo Lavia is emerging as one of this summer's most in-demand players.

“Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea have all held talks, whilst former club Man City, Man Utd and Newcastle are being kept informed.

“Southampton want £50m…”

It’s evident that Edu faces stiff competition in order to lure him to the Emirates, however, Arteta could offer the youngster Champions League football next season, something which Liverpool and Chelsea can't and this may prove to be the main incentive for a player who is clearly ready to make the step-up.

Who are Arsenal interested in signing this summer?

Along with Rice, the Gunners look to be close to signing Jurrien Timber, while Dutch sensation Xavi Simons has even been offered to the club as the summer overhaul continues ahead of a season which will see the club play in Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 2016/17.

Lavia – who has been described as "special" by Manchester United's Jadon Sancho – could add some solidity to the midfield, screening the defence and acting as Arteta’s own version of Gilberto Silva, who shone under Arsene Wenger between 2002 and 2008, making 243 appearances and becoming a key part of the club's last title-winning side of 2003/04.

The World Cup winner was primarily deployed in a defensive midfield slot during his spell in London, similar to Lavia’s role at the Saints and his tenacious nature mixed with the ability to allow others to flourish, such as Patrick Vieira, made him a key player for Wenger – who lauded the Brazilian for bringing "tactical stability" to his side.

The Belgian exuded the qualities which made Silva such an important member of that wonderful era at the club as he ranked second in the Southampton squad for tackles made per game last season (2.1) while also ranking sixth for accurate passes per game (29.5) and seventh for interceptions per game (1.1), showcasing his defensive ability across a campaign which ended in relegation for the South coast side.

To put this into context, no Arsenal player achieved more interceptions per game or tackles per game than Lavia, with only Thomas Partey coming close, making 2.1 tackles per match and this suggests he could improve the Arsenal midfield.

Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Jean Kindermans, the head of the Anderlecht academy claimed that Lavia is “always calm on the ball” and this is what Arteta requires in order to dominate the midfield battle during matches and even though he isn’t even out of his teens, the Belgian could certainly play a key role in the Arsenal side which will aim to win at least one trophy next season.

Edu played alongside Silva during his time with the north Londoners, and it’s clear he sees the same sort of attributes in the former Manchester City youngster to spend £50m on him this summer.

Newcastle shouldn’t sell 29-year-old this window due to his influence

Journalist Andrew Musgrove has urged Newcastle United to keep Jamaal Lascelles at the club ahead of next season.

Is Jamaal Lascelles going to leave Newcastle?

The club captain has been at Newcastle since 2014, when he joined from boyhood club Nottingham Forest alongside Karl Darlow in a double-swoop for the Magpies which cost them £7m.

Since then, Lascelles has made 225 appearances for the team, captaining them in the 2016/17 campaign as they won the Championship title and subsequent return to the Premier League.

Following the arrival of Eddie Howe in 2021, however, the Englishman has found his game time reduced, with the 29-year-old making just 11 appearances for the club last season.

Despite this, it is thought that the central defender remains an important figure on Tyneside and has been a big influence in the Magpies dressing room amid the club's return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

While there will be more matches for Newcastle next season, Football Insider reports that Lascelles will have to leave St James' Park this summer if he wants to get more regular first-team football, with competition for places potentially getting even tougher if reports about the club's interest in Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio come to bear fruit.

Reports from earlier this year stated that a sensational return to Nottingham Forest was potentially on the cards this summer, with Steve Cooper wanting to add more experience to his side. However, that interest hasn't ended up resulting in a bid just yet.

Lascelles' contract runs until the summer of 2024 and it seems unlikely that the Magpies will be offering the defender a new deal, so this summer would be the final chance for the side to cash in on the player who is closing in on 10 years on Tyneside.

But speaking on the Everything is Black & White YouTube channel, Musgrove stated that he disagrees with the result of a fan poll which stated that over 20,000 fans believed the club should sell Lascelles, citing the 29-year-old's experience and influence, as well as the quality he still has as reasons to keep him around.

Musgrove said: "He hasn't kicked off at losing his place – he's taken it in his stride and he's put his focus and attention elsewhere and become a real benefit to Newcastle United off the pitch.

"A lot of you guys will remember him picking up two bookings as a substitute, and that's the kind of thing that really reaffirms just how important he is off the pitch; he's always fighting for the club, even if he isn't kicking a ball for 90 minutes.

"And he's got the right attitude, because let's be honest, a lot of club captains who are suddenly out of the side would've kicked off, they would not have been happy. And I'm sure he's not happy at not playing, but he understands the bigger picture and he really has handled essentially being benched really, really well.

"And when he did come in against Manchester City, against Liverpool, I thought he did very well – and I think he can still play a big part in Newcastle's future going ahead, especially next season."

What should Lascelles do next season?

Lascelles has a big decision to make this summer about his career.

He is 29 years old now and should be in the prime of his career. Does he want to spend it playing regular Premier League football at his boyhood club, or does he want to captain the side he has been with for the past nine seasons into their first Champions League campaign in over two decades?

The big thing that might sway the decision is the fact that he only has a year remaining on his deal, so he could move on in the summer of 2024 and clubs wouldn't have to pay a fee. However, should he only play limited minutes next season, the question will have to be asked about whether teams should take the gamble on him.

It is a massive call for the defender to make, but he has two very appealing options, whatever he decides.
