Matt Critchley makes 99 as Essex pile on the runs before rain frustrates title bid

Hampshire face just seven overs in reply as challengers are thwarted at Chelmsford

Matt Critchley fell one run short of his third LV= Insurance County Championship of the season before title-contenders Essex declared on a hefty 447 against Hampshire.Critchley had been strolling towards three figures and 1,000 runs for the season but stuttered on 99 before he slapped to short extra cover.Simon Harmer and Umesh Yadav, the latter in electrifying style, struck half-centuries as Essex continued to tot up the runs before a lunchtime declaration, before Hampshire scored 10 without loss in seven overs.Essex accrued three batting points in their quest to challenge Surrey for the title – which cancelled out the three bowling points Surrey picked up against Northamptonshire. The points difference remains 18.Having resumed on 310 for six, and just eight overs into the second new ball, Essex had the 350-run bonus point in their sights.Critchley was more watchful than he had been during his exciting 177-run partnership with centurion Adam Rossington. He went from 83 in 123 balls to 99 in 162 balls before getting stuck. He batted out a maiden from Liam Dawson – which included him getting dropped off a caught and bowled.Three more dots off Kyle Abbott followed as he struggled to find a gap in the field, before attempted to hit Dawson over the covers and was caught by Nick Gubbins at short extra cover.Critchley had never had the misfortune of falling for 99 before, while he now has 969 runs for the season. His departure sparked an up-turn in the tempo, as Harmer sparked into life and Yadav took a fancy to Dawson and fellow spinner Felix Organ. They scored 77 runs in seven and a half overs before the declaration came – their 70 stand coming in 69 balls.Harmer dominated his boundary hitting by rocking onto the backfoot and cutting behind point, although also pinged Dawson over long on after coming down the track. The South African’s half-century came in 76 balls as he moved past 500 runs in a profitable season from the lower-middle order.Yadav’s 51 off 45 was breathtaking. The Indian swung hard and far in his four sixes, and his three fours didn’t come from precision play either.Harmer and Yadav were both caught at long on going for a big shot, with the latter’s bringing the end of the innings and lunch.Sam Cook sent down three maidens in response, with Harmer’s sole over also runless.Toby Albert and Fletcha Middleton’s 10 runs all came off Jamie Porter before bad light took the two teams off.The forecast rain then battered the Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford and saw play called off just before 16.30.

'We don't want to be pushovers any more' – Tammy Beaumont

Self-belief is coursing through an England side which has come a long way since 2019

“We don’t want to be pushovers any more,” declared Tammy Beaumont when explaining the importance of self-belief to her England side’s remarkable Ashes push from 6-0 down to all square with two matches to play. And it was another declaration, back in July 2019, that started it all. Back then with the Ashes lost again Clare Connor, then the ECB’s managing director, announced that there would be a complete revamp of domestic women’s cricket in England to avoid another chastening defeat at the hands of Australia, whom she recognised had set the standard for how things should be done. With England 12-2 down in that series, it felt like a seminal moment, and it was.England secured a consolation win in the final match of the series but, much more than that, the ECB followed up Connor’s announcement with action, introducing a new regional structure, a new head coach – which has since changed again – and greater investment in the women’s game. All this we know but, even though it has taken four years, there is a strong sense now that the sea-change is complete. On Friday, ahead of the penultimate match in the series, Beaumont drew parallels with the revival of England’s men’s team following their 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia in 2021-22. Now both teams stand on the cusp of extraordinary achievements. England Women must win their remaining two ODIs if they are to win back the Ashes held by Australia since 2015, while their male counterparts trail Australia 1-2 and must win the last two Tests to win do likewise.”It’s really important,” Beaumont said of her team’s never-say-die attitude, which has come to the fore in this series. “You’re seeing that with the men’s Ashes as well, they’ve gone two-nil down, but we don’t want to be pushovers anymore.”That’s probably why this series has been so captivating to everyone. I am a massive cricket badger, but I feel like Ashes fever is everywhere for both the men and the women and it’s great to see. British culture has always loved an underdog so I think it’s probably helped that we’re taking on such a great team in Australia. I personally love that feeling of trying to overcome a bit of difficulty.”Related

Death, taxes and Kate Cross nailing the scoop

Beaumont, the opener whose record innings of 208 gave her side a strong chance in the Test which opened the series and was ultimately won by Australia, was overlooked for the T20I leg of the series, having lost her place in the squad for the shortest format last summer. England won the second two T20Is with Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley at the top of the order to turn the series and so she admits she “can’t be too hard done by” despite making no secret of the fact she’s “desperate” to try and break back into the T20I side.Beaumont did, however, return for the first ODI in Bristol, in which she set up England’s highest ever 50-over run chase with 47 from 42 balls before Heather Knight’s unbeaten 75 and Kate Cross’s priceless 19 not out from No. 10 saw them home.”I just feel like there’s such great trust in everyone at every situation,” Beaumont said. “At Bristol the other day, there was no doubt in my mind that Kate Cross could bat like that. Every single one of us on the sideline felt completely at ease knowing that Kate had the skills to do it. Everybody just backs each other’s abilities and their decision-making. It’s a great feeling to have.”That that wasn’t always the case, Beaumont says, especially against an opposition with as formidable a reputation as Australia, who went into Bristol unbeaten in 15 ODIs.”In the past, if we’d lost the first two Ashes games, maybe wouldn’t have had that belief as much,” she said. “So from our way of looking at it, externally to them, we have kind of got that belief and a little bit of taking that aura away.”For Australia, however, left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen said there was no sense of panic, given her team needs to win just one of the remaining two games to retain the Ashes.”Definitely not,” Jonassen said. “This side has won a lot of games of cricket over a number of years and the fact that the last three haven’t really gone our way is no cause to panic.”The scores are level. We haven’t played our best cricket, which is probably the thing that we’re focusing on the most. England still need to win two, but equally, we’re trying to win the last two as well. There’s two high-quality sides and if you’re not on on any given day, then the opposition is going to take the game away from you.”Even though the losses we’ve had have been really, really tight and really close, we feel that it’s been our own undoing in a way, that we’ve been a bit sloppy in certain areas and lacked a little bit of discipline at times in terms of extras, misfields and what have you. But the positive is that’s all in our control.”Whatever happens from this point, however, there is no denying now that the gap, identified so starkly four years ago, is closing.

'Mate, we can do it. I have full faith in ourselves'

Perth Scorchers’ BBL title-winning stars Cooper Connolly, Nick Hobson recall their approach

Tristan Lavalette04-Feb-2023By the end of an unforgettable BBL final, inexperienced Cooper Connolly and unheralded Nick Hobson etched their names into Perth Scorchers’ lore to become unexpected heroes at a febrile Perth Stadium. It wasn’t in the script when ice cool skipper Ashton Turner appeared set to once again rescue defending champions Scorchers in a nerve-jangling instant classic against Brisbane Heat. He reached his half-century with a six but at 4 for 137, chasing 176, disaster struck when Turner was involved in a horrendous mix-up with new batter Hobson.”I’m still probably going to wake up with nightmares over that one,” Hobson later said.In another twist, fittingly capping a madcap BBL season, Scorchers still needed 39 off 19 balls as a rowdy crowd of 53,886 quickly turned silent.Related

Turner fifty, Connolly cameo help Scorchers defend BBL crown

Scorchers’ hopes of a title defence rested on Hobson, who holds down a day job as an accountant and hadn’t batted in six of the last eight games, and 19-year-old Connolly, having batted just once before in three BBL games. A rejuvenated Heat, having won seven of eight to qualify for the final, moved into favouritism but Connolly, who captained Australia at last year’s Under-19 World Cup, remained unruffled.”I just walked up to Hobbo and said ‘mate, we can do this. I have full faith in ourselves’,” Connolly said.Hobson also had some words of wisdom to share with Connolly: “Keep a strong base and if it’s there, try hit it for six and if it’s not there, play a good cricket shot along the ground.”A nerveless Connolly took heed with a remarkable assault on Heat seamer James Bazley in the 18th over to turn the match on its head. He started with a six then two balls later whacked a short delivery to the boundary before capping the over with another blow into an increasingly delirious sea of orange fans.”After that over from Bazley, I thought ‘we can actually do this’,” Connolly said. “We sort of just got on a roll and that’s what momentum does, momentum helps you win games so I’m pretty happy.”Connolly’s heroics reduced Scorchers’ target to a much more manageable 20 runs off 12 balls, but his whirlwind appeared to be over on 19 when he skied to deep point only for Josh Brown to drop the catch. It meant Scorchers needed 10 runs off the final over against fringe Test quick Michael Neser.”We even thought three twos and one boundary and we’re away,” Connolly said.53,886 turned up at the Perth Stadium, the most at the ground for a cricket match•Cricket Australia via Getty ImagesHobson, however, had other ideas when he bludgeoned the second ball for a six over deep midwicket before sealing Scorchers’ fifth title with a boundary to trigger celebrations that reverberated all over the stadium. The pair encapsulated the club’s remarkable depth with Connolly and Hobson beneficiaries of Scorchers’ horror injury run, which included star allrounder Mitchell Marsh missing the entire season.”When I hit Neser in the final over, it was so loud and I couldn’t hold my excitement,” Hobson said. “I’ve never played in front of anything like that, I’ll remember that forever.””I felt like I had the full support of the coaches and captain the whole tournament, and it came off tonight.”Having taken annual leave from his accounting job, Hobson understandably won’t be returning to the office on Monday.”I’ll come back the week after,” Hobson laughed. “I’ll let it all decompress.”While for Connolly, with his name being chanted by giddy fans in the aftermath, stardom awaits for Western Australia’s latest cricket sensation.”Not many 19-year-olds get to play in front of 50,000, so I’m just here to soak it all in and enjoy the moment,” Connolly said. “It just gives me that extra boost that I can play at this level.”

Gambhir: 'There's no discussion; Kishan should be Rohit's opening partner in ODIs'

Gautam Gambhir, the former India batter, is clear Ishan Kishan, and no one else, should be India’s first-choice opener alongside Rohit Sharma in ODIs for the foreseeable future.Kishan converted his maiden ODI century into a career-best 210 in his most recent outing in Bangladesh earlier this month. Now, with Shikhar Dhawan out of the ODI squad, Gambhir believes Kishan should be persisted with.”I’m amazed we’re discussing this, because someone’s got a double-hundred in the previous innings,” Gambhir said when asked who he would like to see as Rohit’s opening partner. “The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack – especially at [their] home – should play.Related

“He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can’t look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can also keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn’t be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would’ve gone gung-ho over that individual, but it’s not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over.”Gambhir also believes Suryakumar Yadav can be an asset at No. 4, despite his 50-overs record so far not having been as prolific as his T20 numbers. In 16 ODIs, Suryakumar has made 384 runs with just two half-centuries. In his most recent outing in New Zealand, two of his three knocks ended up being scores of 4 and 6.His Mumbai compatriot Shreyas Iyer has all along been superb in the 50-overs format. In 15 innings this year, Iyer has scored 724 runs at an average of 55.69 and a strike rate of 91.52. His strike rotation and maneuvering spin in the middle overs have been a standout feature of his batting.”It’s very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he’s been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years,” Gambhir said of his ideal India XI. “Yes, he’s had issues against the short ball, but he’s been able to manage it. You can’t be the best against everything but if you’re able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can’t look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6.”Gambhir sees no place for KL Rahul in India’s first XI: “Probably he’ll be a back-up wicketkeeper and a back-up batter”•AFP via Getty Images

Does this mean he won’t pick KL Rahul in his first XI?”Probably he’ll be a back-up wicketkeeper and a back-up batter,” Gambhir said. “See, if you haven’t been able to grab the opportunity and someone else has, you have to wait for your turn. I don’t think you can look beyond Surya at No. 4.”Yes, he hasn’t got the same numbers what he has in T20Is, but we all know how destructive he can be; especially when you have five fielders inside the ring, he can win you games at No. 4. Shreyas [with] the kind of form he’s in and Hardik at six, I think this will be my core. Shubman Gill will have to wait for his opportunity.”“Prithvi Shaw needs to be looked after”
Gambhir was also unequivocal in his support for Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw, who finds himself in the cold yet again. Shaw hasn’t played for India since July last year.Over the course of his short career, Shaw has had to cope with more than just a loss of form. Ever since he was suspended for a doping violation in 2019, his fitness and lifestyle issues have been under scrutiny. In March this year, Shaw was reported to have failed a yo-yo test. His score of less than 15 was far from BCCI’s prescribed minimum score of 16.5 for men. So far this season, he has largely remained injury-free, and has been a constant presence in the Mumbai line-up.He was the second-highest run-getter at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, with 336 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 181.42. His 50-overs numbers were less impactful in comparison. He has begun the ongoing Ranji Trophy slowly, with scores of 13, 6 and 19 in his first two matches.Asked if the perception that Shaw was hard to manage may have gone against him, Gambhir put the onus on the coaches and selectors to give him guidance and keep him in their plans.”Someone like a Prithvi Shaw, we all know the kind of talent he has. Probably the coaches should get him on the right track”•PTI

“What are coaches there for? What are selectors there for?” Gambhir asked. “Not to just select the squad or probably to do those throw downs or make them ready for the game. Ultimately it’s the selectors and coaches and management who should try and help these guys. Someone like a Prithvi Shaw, we all know the kind of talent he has. Probably they should get him on the right track and that is what one of the jobs of the management is.”I feel that if that’s the case [fitness and lifestyle issues], someone – whether it’s Rahul Dravid or the chairman of selectors – should actually have a word with him, give him clarity and keep him around the group. People who should be on the right path should be around the group, so that they are monitored better. Because the moment you leave them apart, they can go all over the place.”Someone like a Prithvi Shaw, the kind of start he had to his international career and the kind of talent he has, you back a player on talent. Yes, you have to look at the upbringing as well – where he comes from and the challenges he’s had as well. It makes even more sense for the management and the selectors to keep him around the mix, and help him get on the right track.”Shouldn’t there be onus on the player too?”One-hundred percent,” Gambhir said. “If you’re dedicated and passionate enough to play for the country, you’ve got to be able to get all the parameters right, whether it’s the fitness or discipline as well. It’s got to be both ways. You’ve got to give a young boy at least one chance or a couple of chances, and if he still doesn’t do that, then he’s not passionate enough to play for the country and probably you can look beyond him.”But if he’s willing to put in the hard yards – and I know how destructive he can be; if he can go on to win games for you, whether it’s trainers, management, head coach or chairman of selectors, all these guys should take the onus to try and get these young boys walk on the right path.”

All eyes will be on Serie A next Monday as AC Milan visits Genoa for a match that will pit two Mexican internationals against each other: Johan Vásquez and Santiago Giménez. The highly anticipated clash will mark a rare reunion for the two players, both of whom came up through Liga MX academies – Vásquez with Pumas and Giménez with Cruz Azul.

Ahead of the game, Vásquez took the opportunity to send a light-hearted warning to his national teammate. In an interview with , the Genoa defender said he holds Giménez in high regard and that their bond has grown stronger since they began sharing the locker room with Mexico’s national team.

However, he reminded the striker of the last time they faced off – nearly five years ago – and hinted that Monday might serve as a reminder of his defensive prowess.

“He’s a great friend, someone I’m always joking around with when we’re in camp with the national team,” Vásquez said. “He played for Cruz Azul for a decade, but it’s been four or five years since we’ve gone head-to-head. Hopefully he remembers how I defend – and if not, he’ll find out on Monday.”

Giménez recently ended a goal drought with AC Milan, though the team’s prospects are limited to securing ninth place in the league, with little hope of qualifying for European competition next season. Genoa, currently sitting in 13th place, is on the brink of achieving its primary objective: avoiding relegation.

This will be the first time Vásquez and Giménez face off since their days in Liga MX. Their last encounter on opposing sides came on March 8, 2021, when Vásquez was with Pumas and Giménez played for Cruz Azul.

Under manager Patrick Vieira, Vásquez has established himself as a key component of Genoa’s defense. He has missed just one match this Serie A campaign, due to suspension, and has started in 31 of his 33 appearances.

Giménez, on the other hand, has experienced a rocky start to life under Milan manager Sérgio Conceição. In his first 11 Serie A appearances, he’s logged 604 minutes and scored just three goals.

Getty ImagesWHAT JOHAN VÁSQUEZ SAID

Vásquez is enjoying one of the best stretches of his career at Genoa. The center-back just became the Mexican player with the most appearances in Serie A history, reaching 121 matches and surpassing Hirving “Chucky” Lozano’s mark of 120.

“Playing in Europe is the dream you have since you’re a kid,” Vásquez said. “It’s been four long years – not easy ones – but I’m still hungry. I don’t see this as my ceiling; I believe I can still give more.”

The 25-year-old also paid tribute to Lozano.

“I think Chucky set the bar really high. He gave us that hunger to keep competing,” Vásquez said. “I’d love to be that kind of role model for other young players, the way he was for me. I hope more Mexicans can come to Europe, and that it won’t be so difficult for them to adapt and succeed.”

Founded in 1893, Genoa is the oldest football club in Italy. The club has a proud legacy, having won the Italian Championship nine times – including the very first national title in 1898. Their most recent triumph came in the 1923–24 season.

“In its early years, Genoa was a great team – it’s a historic club,” said Vásquez. “It’s always been well-known throughout Italy, and I’d love for more Mexican fans to learn about my team. Not everything is about Juventus, Inter, or Milan. Genoa has a proud tradition and has meant a lot to my family.”

Harmanpreet: 'Victory sets up fitting farewell for Jhulan Goswami at Lord's'

India targeted victory over England in the second ODI so that they could give Jhulan Goswami a fitting send-off at Lord’s, captain Harmanpreet Kaur has said.Harmanpreet confirmed that Saturday’s third and final fixture of India’s tour will be Goswami’s last before she retires from international cricket after a career spanning two decades.Victory in Canterbury meant India took an unassailable 2-0 lead into the final match having clinched their first series win in the format against England in England since 1999. The margin of victory on Wednesday was emphatic – by 88 runs with 34 balls to spare – and built on Harmanpreet’s unbeaten 143 as she took her side to 333 for 5, their second-highest ODI total.Related

“When you win the first game, the second game is always important and we always try to finish that game as a winning side and today also we were looking at that only because we don’t want to carry any extra pressure on ourselves going to Lord’s,” Harmanpreet said.”The Lord’s game is very special for us because it’s Jhulan’s retirement and we wanted to enjoy that game without any pressure and I’m really happy that we were able to win today and now we can just have fun in that game.”The next game will be the first time either side has played at Lord’s since their thrilling 2017 World Cup final showdown, which England won by nine runs, and Harmanpreet said India were keen to reverse the result for Goswami. But, more importantly, they wanted to enjoy the occasion.”It’s very important [to win] because that will be her last game,” Harmanpreet added. “It will be a very emotional moment for all of us and we definitely want to win that game.”Moreover, after winning the series now we just want to have fun because I know it’s the last game for her.”Goswami, 39, was named in India’s squad for the three ODIs in England after missing the preceding 50-over series in Sri Lanka in July. She had previously played for India during the 50-over World Cup in New Zealand in March, where she missed India’s final group game against South Africa with a side strain. All that set up a farewell tour of England on which she has so far taken one wicket from two games and where her presence, Harmanpreet said, had been invaluable as India look to build the experience of their younger seam bowlers.”She’s someone who has taught us a lot,” said Harmanpreet who made her ODI debut in the 2009 World Cup, when Goswami was captain. “When I debuted she was a leader and I learned a lot from her and now our young bowlers, like Renuka [Singh] and Meghna Singh, they are also learning from her. They are learning how she bowls and getting that rhythm from her. She’s been a great inspiration for all of us and we’ve learned a lot from her.”Goswami will leave the game as the highest wicket-taker in women’s internationals, with 353 wickets so far across formats. She began her international career as a 19-year old in January 2002, and has played 12 Tests, 68 T20Is and 203 ODIs. She holds the record for the most wickets in ODIs with a tally of 253.

Man Utd now plotting cheap deal to sign "amazing" versatile midfield gem

Setting their sights on midfield reinforcements, Manchester United are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a young versatile La Liga star for Ruben Amorim in what could be a bargain deal.

Man Utd transfer news

Bargain is certainly a word that Manchester United will be keen to hear both this month and during the summer transfer window, with the club reportedly walking a fine line when it comes to profit and sustainability issues at a time when they once again need several reinforcements. The last thing that they need is to run into any sanctions on that front and that could yet see player sales take priority this month.

Man Utd discussing stunning Sanchez-esque swap deal to sign "fantastic" ace

They’ll be hoping he’s better than Sanchez…

Out-of-favour stars such as Alejandro Garnacho could, therefore, provide the Red Devils with a parting gift if he does complete a mid-season switch to Chelsea as rumours suggest is certainly a possibility.

The same can be said for Marcus Rashford. Dropped since missing out on derby victory over Manchester City, the Carrington graduate desperately needs a move away and one which could yet fund the Red Devils’ pursuit of Patrick Dorgu this month.

His departure could also aid those at Old Trafford in pursuit of a summer target. According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are now plotting a cheap deal to sign Lucien Agoume from Sevilla this summer. The 22-year-old midfielder would reportedly not cost a substantial fee this summer, leaving the door ajar for United to potentially make a much-needed bargain move.

A rising star, Agoume would be well worth the gamble for a bargain fee this summer. The Frenchman could even become the missing piece in Amorim’s midfield next to Manuel Ugarte, whilst also providing centre-back cover thanks to his key versatility.

Whilst the Sevilla man is not a name that will instantly steal a number of headlines, he could quickly play a pivotal role in transforming Amorim’s side in his first full season in charge.

"Amazing" Agoume could partner Ugarte

Slowly but surely, Manchester United are moving beyond the need for Christian Eriksen and Casemiro in what should be a crucial step towards returning to the Champions League. But at least one more option must still arrive to compete with Kobbie Mainoo for a place alongside Ugarte and that may well prove to be Agoume this summer.

The Sevilla star certainly has the traits to step into the Old Trafford midfield, with analyst Ben Mattinson praising his “composed” ability to dictate play and “top ball retention” before dubbing him an “amazing #6 profile” at the end of last year.

With plenty to do when the summer arrives, Agoume should be among the options that Manchester United should consider if his valuation is, indeed, set at a cheap price.
