Former hero: Liverpool fans still have a high opinion of Fernando Torres

[ad_pod ]

Fernando Torres, in his prime, was an absolute superstar.

A successful start to his career with Atletico Madrid led to a move to Liverpool in 2007.

The centre-forward scored 33 times in his first season for the Reds, before netting 17, 22 and nine respectively in his next three campaigns for the Merseyside outfit.

After managing 81 goals in 142 games, Torres left for Chelsea in January 2011.

The Spaniard’s career pretty much went downhill from that point; there were some brilliant moments, but he never showed the type of form from his Liverpool days.

Now 35, Torres currently turns out for Sagan Tosu in the J1 League.

The manner of the forward’s exit from Liverpool was not exactly brilliant, but it seems that the club’s supporters still have fond memories of him.

Indeed, in response to a Twitter post from Liverpool’s official account, the Merseyside team’s fans were out in their numbers to hail the 6 ft 1 ace:

Rangers fans crucify Jack performance vs Aberdeen

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been running the rule over their 1-1 draw at Pittodrie, and they’re extremely disappointed by the performance of fan favourite Ryan Jack.

Rangers and Aberdeen squared off for the fifth, yes fifth, time this season on Sunday, as goals from Sam Cosgrove and Joe Worrall left the sides equal after 90 minutes.

Cosgrove opened the scores from the spot after Connor Goldson rather recklessly brought down Gary Mackay-Steven, but Worrall equalised from close range after the break.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

Alfredo Morelos and Connor McLennan were both booked for diving in what was a fiery and controversial clash, and goalscorer Cosgrove should consider himself lucky to have escaped a card for his tumble in the first half as well.

While there were loads of talking points, Jack’s display was perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the day, as the 27 year-old has been fabulous through most of the season.

With three goals and three assists from midfield this season, including the winner against Celtic, Jack has quickly become a popular figure at Ibrox, but the Twitter reactions down below are furious with his showing in Sunday’s draw…

The Chalkboard: Mauricio Pochettino can’t rely on Erik Lamela against Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur winger Erik Lamela turned in an underwhelming performance in his side’s 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, and manager Mauricio Pochettino can’t afford to trust him again when his side host Arsenal in another London derby on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

The Argentina international was perhaps something of a surprise name on the team-sheet given he hasn’t exactly been a regular in the Spurs XI in the Premier League this season, but he had a big opportunity to impress as his boss switched from a 3-4-1-2 system to a 4-2-3-1 against the Blues.

It wasn’t a tactic that worked out as the Lilywhites suffered their second successive top-flight defeat however, with Lamela failing to bring much to proceedings before he was replaced by Fernando Llorente in the 70th minute.

The 26-year-old got the nod to start against Maurizio Sarri’s men ahead of teammate Lucas Moura, but he might not be so lucky for the visit of the Gunners at the weekend.

Should he be dropped?

Without a doubt.

The attacker did nothing to convince his manager that he can be trusted to make a difference both offensively and defensively in what is potentially shaping up to be Tottenham’s biggest match of the campaign, as the chasing pack continues to close in on them with their form dipping.

Spurs ideally need all three points against Unai Emery’s visitors to boost their hopes of cementing their Champions League qualification spot, and they need to be at their very best against a side that thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 on Wednesday.

It remains to be seen which formation Pochettino will go with, but even if he does stick with the 4-2-3-1 Lamela should not be in the XI.

Potential Consequences: Crystal Palace beating Watford

After a promising run in the FA Cup, Crystal Palace’s dream of silverware this season is over.

The Eagles were dumped out of England’s oldest football competition on the weekend by Watford as Andre Grey’s 79th-minute winner sealed Roy Hodgson’s fate in the FA Cup in a 2-1 loss.

It was a disappointing loss for the south London side, who fancied themselves as dark horses of the competition after knocking out Tottenham in the fourth round and making it to final of the FA Cup three years prior.

Ultimately, it was a fair result, but what would the consequences be if Palace were to win against Watford and make it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup?

Palace face tough tie against Wolves

In our reality, Watford were drawn with Wolves in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, so for argument’s sake, we will say Palace are drawn against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as well.

Wolves have been the giant killers in the Cup this season, knocking out both Liverpool and Manchester United comfortably, making them outside favourites for FA Cup glory this season, and in the league as well the West Midlands-based club have been great against teams in the top-six.

Palace would go into this game at Wembley as the underdogs given their earlier result against Wolves this season, a 1-0 loss at Selhurst, and one of Nuno’s most impressive wins of the season was against Tottenham at their temporary home, a 3-1 win over the Christmas period.

However, with Palace having experience at this stage in the competition, Hodgson’s side will be confident of causing an upset and making their second FA Cup final in three years.

Hodgson keeps job, for now

Speaking of Hodgson, making it to a FA Cup semi-final would have kept the oldest manager in Premier League history in the job for at least another season.

Palace have had an underwhelming season despite the level of quality the Eagles have in the squad, and with the scars of Frank de Boer’s horrific managerial appointment more than healed over, the Palace board might be reluctant to replace Hodgson for an ambitious coach.

Hodgson could have strengthened his argument to be given another season to salvage more than a below midtable finish for Palace on the merit he made it to a FA Cup semi-final.

Crystal Palace fans, would a FA Cup semi-final appearance be a high-point this season?

Player Zone: Raheem Sterling is quickly becoming Man City’s difference maker

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Schalke might seem impressive considering they came back from two down despite being reduced to 10 men – Nicolas Otamendi was shown a second yellow for a cynical foul on Guido Bergstaller – but the Cityzens were far from their sparkling best.

Pep Guardiola’s arrival in the Premier League has gifted us some of the best team goals we’ve ever seen and, on their day, the Etihad Stadium outfit are unstoppable in their link-up play. However, it took something a little different to give City the advantage going into the second leg of their Champions League knock-out stage clash.

Nabil Bentaleb, formerly of Spurs, put his side ahead from the spot – his second of the game – on the stroke of half-time and City went after them after the break, although Otamendi’s dismissal with 22 minutes left to play meant the Premier League champions had to be careful.

S04 were intent on breaking down their opponents’ flow wherever and by however means possible – if they had to kick their man to the floor, they happily would. With referee Carlos del Cerro Grande blowing his whistle for a City free-kick left, right and centre, Leroy Sane stepped up to the plate and smashed home a beauty of a free-kick, but the visitors weren’t content with a draw.

Enter Raheem Sterling. The 47-cap England international has blossomed under Guardiola and his timing is rarely anything but impeccable – whether it be calculating his run in order to arrive on the end of a tap-in in the box, or popping up with goals just when City need them most.

The latter is precisely how he stamped his mark on proceedings on Wednesday night, as he cleverly nudged an off-guard Bastian Ockzipka and latched onto Ederson’s long pass, before slotting the ball past Ralf Fahrmann in the dying moments of the game to give his side the win.

Usually, 90th minute winners are special but, while there is no doubting the importance of Sterling’s midweek strike, the sight of the electric winger wheeling away to celebrate with seconds of injury time to go has become far from a rare occurrence – last gasp winners against Bournemouth and Southampton last season come to mind.

Fortunately for City, they have a plethora of players capable of providing moments of individual brilliance but Sterling, in particular, seems to thrive in clutch situations.

Kevin De Bruyne is widely regarded as the player to make things happen for the Etihad Stadium outfit when they are having an off-day – the Belgian has a unique eye for a pass – closely followed by David Silva and Sergio Aguero. But, if Sterling continues to deliver in the manner he did on Wednesday, the 5-foot-7 ace will take that mantle as City’s resident match-winner.

De Bruyne has been hampered by injuries this season and – although there is no doubting his outstanding quality – has hardly lit the world alight since his return to fitness.

Would you rather your club won the Premier League or Champions League? In the video below, Pl>ymaker FC’s Matty believes English clubs have already decided…

The luxury Guardiola possesses which few other teams share is that he can afford for his players, including De Bruyne, to have a dip in form, as the likes of Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan can step in more than capably.

The summer acquisition of Riyad Mahrez gave the Spaniard further options on the wings and the Algerian has justified his price tag when given the nod, although his opportunities will surely begin to vanish if Sterling continues to be the difference maker. Move over De Bruyne, there’s a new showstopper in Manchester.

Everton: Yerry Mina is now crucial for end of season run-in

Time is running out for manager Marco Silva and his team to give the Everton fans something to be excited about as the season begins to draw to a close.

But, following a very disappointing defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday, Silva will have to show quick and rapid improvement for that to be achieved.

The one thing he should, however, have noted from Saturday’s loss against Newcastle United is that defender Yerry Mina should start matches, rather than being used a substitute.

The defender replaced Richarlison on Saturday with 12 minutes left to go and although Newcastle managed to score twice in that period, Everton might have had a better chance of seeing out the game should he had been on the pitch earlier.

The decision to replace the £50m man with the former Barcelona ace was, ultimately, to sit back and defend the two-goal lead they had at the time but it didn’t work and Ayoze Perez struck twice in the final ten minutes to seal a famous win for the Magpies.

The short appearance Mina made on Saturday, however, was only the second match he has featured in this year and he hasn’t been given the proper opportunity to settle as a player or regular starter in the team.

His experience and expertise are exactly what Everton are in dire need for now and they are desperate to have some defensive stability.

Despite his potential, Michael Keane has been far from his best this season, while Kurt Zouma has also been a bit too inconsistent in defence.

Mina, though, should’ve been a key defender for the club this season, but due to injury and Silva not completely backing him, Everton have been punished at the back on multiple occasions.

If the manager starts to back him and use him more regularly then the Toffees might be able to finish the season with some sort of momentum.

In the pipeline: Brilliant Norwich youngster Max Aarons

[ad_pod ]

Max Aarons is in the news.

A brilliant young full-back at Norwich City, Aarons has long been linked with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur and, earlier this week, was nominated for the EFL Young Player of the Season.

The Canaries, of course, are enjoying a superb season in the Championship. They have won all of their last six games, scoring 16 goals along the way, and sit top of the table, four points clear of second-placed Sheffield United.

Aarons, at the age of 19, has been ever-present since making his breakthrough under manager Daniel Farke.

After sitting on the bench as his side lost 2-1 to Sheffield United, Aarons made his debut in a September draw with Ipswich Town. Since then, he has gone on to make 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and laying on five assists.

He has also won four caps for the England Under-19s and, speaking in September, after Aarons’ first call-up to the Young Lions, Farke expressed his admiration for the teen.

Quoted by the Pink Un, he said: “I don’t like to praise the young players so don’t tell him, but I love him a lot. Max is a brilliant lad who really deserves to be in the spotlight at the moment.

“With his attitude and workload from pre-season onwards he deserves this England call up. I am pretty sure it is not the end of his progress. Like I have said before, there is no gifts or presents for young players. He has earned this.”

Aarons is an excellent full-back, both in defence and attack. Blessed with genuine pace and the ability to win the ball and move it on effectively, he is perhaps the archetypal modern right-back and is surely poised to thrive in the Premier League, either for Norwich or Spurs or another big-hitter.

Aarons, per WhoScored, averages 1.4 dribbles per game, along with 1.7 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.8 clearances. This is a player who can pretty much do it all, and he hasn’t even turned 20.

Per The Sun, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino holds a keen interest in Aarons, with the potential for both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier to leave this summer.

That could be a match made in heaven, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker all flourishing under Pochettino’s management.

Norwich had better hope that they are able to keep hold of one of the most exciting British talents outside the top-flight.

Sheffield United fans react to Cranie’s cameo

[ad_pod ]

The Steel City derby ended goalless on Monday night at Hillsborough. Steve Bruce’s Sheffield Wednesday produced a disciplined, determined performance to frustrate and shut out the promotion-chasing Sheffield United.

The Blades attacked persistently, and played some attractive football, but were ultimately unable to produce any end product against their bitter local rivals. Owls fans will be glad to have dented United’s title hopes and can look back on a job well done.

For Chris Wilder, though, it was a more frustrating affair. However, he will have been impressed by a few performances in his team. Despite only coming on in the 62nd minute to replace Kieran Dowell, Martin Cranie had an impressive impact on the game.

The 32-year-old defender showed his attacking quality against the Owls, bringing invention and drive to the Championship high-flyers.

Since his arrival at Bramall Lane in September, Cranie has consistently impressed when called upon and he is starting to push Chris Basham for his spot in the starting XI.

Certainly, if the former England under-21 international keeps this form up he could earn a new contract with the club, with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

After the disappointing derby, plenty of Blades fans took to Twitter to applaud Cranie’s efforts…

Federico Chiesa is a must signing for Tottenham from a financial perspective

Tottenham should definitely lift their self-imposed transfer embargo for Fiorentina’s 21-year-old Federico Chiesa.

Tottenham’s well-documented absence from the transfer market could be coming to a sensational close amidst reported interest in Chiesa, alongside Italian giants Juventus, Inter and AC Milan.

Breaking their transfer taboo will not come cheap, however – with player estimated to cost a whopping £70 million (as per The Sun).

It is a huge amount of money even in today’s market, and by all means a risk for Spurs who typically shy away from big business under Daniel Levy, especially in the wake of a huge stadium investment.

However, on this occasion, Levy may be just as convinced from a business perspective as he is a footballing one.

Versatile forward Chiesa possesses the ability to play almost anywhere in the attacking line-up, as he has shown already this season putting in a number of marquee performances as both a winger and a striker.

He possesses speed off the mark, which is complimented by a rapid technical mind, and has finally added goals to his game – an aspect often criticised before – netting 11 times in 30 appearances.

The stock of young icon-to-be talent is rising, and every club is looking for the next Kylian Mbappe or Marcus Rashford.

We have already seen in the past the likes of Neymar earn goliath transfers to financial powerhouses dotted around Europe for two times the amount they were initially bought for (which in itself was no small fee) so why is Chiesa any different?

Spurs are a forward-thinking side who have already worked wonders for a number of their attackers, and should they invest early into Chiesa, they will have a player of huge value in a few years’ time should they want to cash in. That sounds like Daniel Levy to us.

Tottenham fans, how much would you welcome Chiesa’s potential signing? Join the discussion by commenting below…
