David Luiz swoop would only pay off if Wenger commits to a back three

On the surface, an error-prone defender is the last thing Arsenal need. Arsene Wenger takes great pride in the fact the Gunners have recovered the second-most points from losing positions of any Premier League side this season, but there is a very good reason for that – the Gunners have a habit of conceding cheap goals.

So bringing David Luiz, a centre-back famed for complacency in defensive situations even at the age of 30, into a team that already lacks the consistent organisation you’d expect of a top six Premier League side seems somewhat counter-intuitive. But when his qualities are put into the right context, Luiz can transform from recurring liability into one of the best in the business at what he does.

Only since returning to Chelsea and working under Antonio Conte, a manager now who appears to have lost faith in him, has this truly come to light. While Luiz’s technical and physical qualities have always been clear to see it was the introduction of a back three at Stamford Bridge, with the Brazilian playing the central sweeper role, that highlighted his weaknesses and covered up his flaws.

As Ruud Gullit discussed amid Chelsea’s 13-game winning run last season, the three-man set-up actually leaves Luiz in one of the freest roles on the pitch, both with and without the ball.

“When Luiz plays in a four-man defence and he needs to mark, that can be a problem for him. In this 3-4-3 system, however, he is more of a sweeper and makes fewer challenges than Chelsea’s other defenders.

“That suits him more, firstly because he rarely finds himself in trouble so is not in danger of making a mistake, and also because he is the player with the most freedom in that Chelsea team.Luiz can bring the ball out or play it forward and he uses it very well, which is so important when Chelsea look to break quickly.”

The errors become less prevalent because Luiz isn’t marking a direct opposite number – his primary task is to cover the space behind the other two centre-backs or step into midfield when necessary – and his well-established ability in possession becomes more evident because he’s in a deep-lying, central role that allows him time on the ball and copious options to find.

Nobody has ever doubted Luiz’s ability to spread a pass, or whether he has the athleticism needed to (theoretically, at least) cover for his defensive partners.

Seemingly surplus to requirements in west London, although Wenger has denied an approach for the 56-cap international, that makes Luiz a shrewd potential January target – the perfect man to anchor Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny and complete what would be a rather formidable Gunners back three.

The consequential question, however, is Wenger’s level of commitment to playing 3-4-2-1 long-term. While Luiz has shown remarkable improvements in terms of reliability and consistency since becoming Chelsea’s sweeper, all of the current evidence suggests he’s still something of a liability in a back four – when he isn’t licensed the same defensive and offensive freedom.

On the most-part this term, Wenger has shown a commitment to a system which Conte directly inspired, using it 18 times from a possible 21 Premier League fixtures, so it makes sense to acquire what was previously one of the Italian’s most important cogs in making it work, especially one with the vast experience of Luiz.

But it always had the feeling of a temporary arrangement at Arsenal to resolve a bout of poor form and some would argue its run its course – there are still square pegs in round holes and Arsenal have conceded more than one goal per game using the formation this season.

In theory, signing Luiz – who Transfermarkt value at £27million – would address that, improving defensive performance and subsequently results by putting something of a three-at-the-back specialist at the base of the team.

But should Wenger revert back to a four-man defence as his primary setup, which certainly isn’t implausible, Arsenal will end up having the old, error-prone, ever-exposed Luiz on their hands.

Ex-Everton striker claims Allardyce is steering club in the ‘right direction’

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell seems convinced that Sam Allardyce is doing the right job for the Merseyside outfit. Some fans were sceptical when the experienced coach was appointed as Ronald Koeman’s successor, but plenty are now buying into his philosophy.Since Allardyce took charge, the Toffees have won four and drawn one in all competitions.Three triumphs in the Premier League have steered the club away from relegation and up to ninth. On Monday night, Everton faced Swansea City at Goodison Park and after 35 minutes the team were 1-0 down to the struggling Welsh outfit.Allardyce’s men turned it around, though, thanks to goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Gylfi Sigurdsson.Wayne Rooney missed a penalty, but he also converted one later in the game to help Everton to a 3-1 victory. The Merseyside club had not won back-to-back league games at all this season until Allardyce was appointed. While in a conversation with a fellow Twitter user, Campbell gave his assessment of the game.

Revealed: The three fringe players Liverpool fans want to start vs Everton

While the Merseyside derby must always be taken seriously, both Liverpool and Everton look set to make some changes when they meet in the Third Round of the FA Cup this evening.

In addition to tough Premier League fixtures on the horizon, versus Manchester City and Tottenham respectively, Jurgen Klopp and Sam Allardyce will likely see the cup competition as a chance to rotate their squads and give chances to players who haven’t received much game-time so far this term.

With that in mind, we asked Liverpool fans earlier this week to vote for which three fringe players they’d like to see make the starting XI this evening and the results of our poll are now in.

Young forward Ben Woodburn won our poll but he was closely followed by 6 foot 3 midfielder Marko Grujic and attacker Danny Ings, who is yet to make his first start for Liverpool this season following a lengthy injury layoff.

West Ham fans react as Leander Dendoncker slips down midfield targets list

According to reports in The Telegraph, West Ham United have cooled their interest in Anderlecht star Leander Dendoncker, who is rated at £16.2m according to Transfermarkt, and Irons fans are furious at the new development.

David Moyes has been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old midfielder this month, with reports from Belgian media outlet DH on Tuesday suggesting that the Belgium international ‘dreams’ of a transfer to the London Stadium.

However, The Telegraph reports that after assistant manager Stuart Pearce saw Dendoncker play as a centre-back at the weekend, he has now dropped down their list of potential midfield signings with Real Betis’ Fabian Ruiz, Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey and Inter Milan’s Joao Mario all potentially ahead of him now.

West Ham supporters were quick to have their say on the story via social media, and while one said “just want us to sign Dendoncker”, another simply told the club to “please pay the money” to bring him to the capital.

Everton fans do not want Smalling or Jones

According to The Mirror, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is prepared to sell both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at the end of the season.

The duo were heavily criticised following Man United’s defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on January 31, and more questions were asked following the team’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Indeed, Newcastle’s winner came from a free kick which had been won when Smalling was booked for throwing himself to the floor in an attempt to win a foul.

It has been reported that Mourinho would sell both players this summer, despite the fact that Jones has actually been solid for long spells of the season.

Everton fans were asked whether they would take the pair in this summer’s transfer window.

Despite the Toffees having problems at the back, not many of the supporters said that they would welcome either Jones or Smalling at Goodison Park for the 2018-19 campaign.

West Ham fans react to latest news regarding Andy Carroll’s injury

West Ham United fans have been reacting to the news that Andy Carroll could be returning to the side much earlier than expected with a pinch of salt.

Co-owner David Gold, who is active on Twitter, was asked if there were any updates on the England international’s progress and provided supporters with some unexpected information.

He told the club’s faithful that the former Liverpool and Newcastle striker could feature for the side before the end of the season.

However, fans took this piece of news as a joke and decided to react with their own pieces of humour.

Supporters questioned what season Carroll would be back, whilst others decided to question the co-owner on whether the attacker would be competing in the horse racing.

Fans have been disappointed with his contributions since arriving at the Hammers and many had hoped that the rumours of him leaving in the January transfer window to Chelsea would have come true.

His untimely injury stopped any sort of transfer from happening and now supporters will be keen to offload him during the summer.

West Ham fans react to Hernandez comments

Javier Hernandez recently revealed his new-found happiness at West Ham United.

The Mexican asked to leave the Hammers in January following a difficult spell towards the end of 2017, but the striker ultimately remained at the London Stadium.

That has proved to be a good decision, with Hernandez scoring three times in his last four Premier League appearances for the club that he joined last summer.

Hernandez, who is valued at £16.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, was always going to score goals for the capital club, with few strikers in the Premier League able to match the 29-year-old’s awareness in the penalty box.

Hernandez’s comments have come ahead of West Ham’s trip to Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend, where the Hammers will be looking for another three points.

West Ham posted Hernandez’s quotes on their official Twitter page on Wednesday, and the club’s supporters were on hand to pay tribute to the in-form Mexican.

How Newcastle must line up when they face Liverpool on Saturday

Newcastle United will hope to boost their Premier League survival chances when they face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

The Magpies looked to be moving four points clear of the relegation zone when they were leading Bournemouth 2-0 with 10 minutes left on the clock at the Vitality Stadium last weekend, but they conceded twice to draw 2-2 which has left them two points above 18th-placed Swansea City.

Rafa Benitez’s men could find themselves in the bottom three by the time they kick off on Saturday evening, and they face a difficult task to get anything against the Merseyside outfit with Jurgen Klopp’s men in imperious attacking form.

The electric front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all got on the scoresheet as they beat West Ham United 4-1 last weekend, taking their combined tally for the season to 63 in all competitions.

Benitez will know that his tactics need to be spot on and his players will need to be at their best if they are to take anything back to Tyneside, but they will certainly take some solace from the fact that Liverpool still often look suspect from a defensive point of view.

The 57-year-old stuck with the same XI that beat Manchester United 1-0 for the visit to the south coast last weekend, but given the tough task they look to have he may well be considering making some alterations against the Reds.

Here is how Newcastle must line up against Liverpool on Saturday, ahead of Martin Dubravka in goal…

Defence

Benitez understandably went with the same back four that kept a clean sheet against Manchester United at the Vitality Stadium last weekend, and the quartet of DeAndre Yedlin, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett are likely to continue at Anfield.

The only change the Spanish boss could consider making would be to bring Ciaran Clark in for Lejeune, but he should choose to go with the settled backline he has used for the last few matches on what could be a difficult afternoon.

The Magpies will need their captain Lascelles to be at his best and giving plenty of instructions against the Reds if his team are to pick up at least a precious point.

Midfield

There may well be changes afoot for Newcastle in the middle of the park at Anfield considering Jonjo Shelvey is said to be a doubt after he picked up an injury during the draw against Bournemouth, which he was visibly struggling with in the closing stages.

Shelvey has formed a strong partnership with Mo Diame in the centre in recent weeks but if the former is absent then Mikel Merino should replace him, while Benitez should also consider bringing in Isaac Hayden in place of Ayoze Perez to ensure the Magpies have that defensive solidity.

Matt Ritchie and Kenedy should once again both start on the flanks.

Attack

While Mo Diame has been excelling in a central midfield role in recent weeks, he is also capable of playing in a more attacking role through the middle and that would mean that he is the best player to start behind the striker against Liverpool.

The Senegal international would be able to use his strength to bring the ball forward, while dropping in to make a five-man midfield when the Magpies are defending, leaving Perez to drop to the substitutes’ bench.

Dwight Gayle is a doubt after scoring a brace against Bournemouth and while he must start if he is fit, Benitez will have a straight choice between Perez and Joselu for the striker spot if not.

Two big changes Pellegrino must make to his Southampton XI vs Newcastle

Southampton will look to boost their Premier League survival bid in a potentially season-defining clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday, on the back of a disappointing goalless draw against fellow strugglers Stoke City at St Mary’s last weekend.

The south coast outfit would have seen the match against the Potters as a must-win considering they only had three home games left this season after that one – with two of those against Chelsea and Manchester City – but they failed to make the breakthrough against Paul Lambert’s men which increased the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Saints have now not beaten any of their relegation rivals Stoke, Newcastle, Swansea City, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion on their own patch this term, and they will now likely be relying on results on the road to save them.

They lie just one place and one point above the relegation zone and one point behind the 16th-placed Magpies ahead of their fixture on Tyneside on Saturday, and they can certainly take some solace from the fact that the hosts have the third worst home record in the top flight.

Pellegrino will be considering making some changes to the XI that drew against Stoke given they didn’t get the three points they needed, and the Argentine boss will regret it if he fails to make a couple of important alterations to his team.

Here are two big changes the 46-year-old must make to his Southampton side when they face Newcastle…

Manolo Gabbiadini for Dusan Tadic

Tadic once again put in something of an anonymous attacking performance in the goalless draw against Stoke at St Mary’s, and it is about time that Pellegrino dropped the Serbia international from the starting line-up.

Despite scoring a late equaliser as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Burnley last month, Gabbiadini was only picked to start on the substitutes’ bench against the Potters last weekend, and he has only made one Premier League start for the club since December.

With the attacking players that continue to start coming up short, it is time to give the Italy international his opportunity from the first whistle at St James’ Park to see if he can be more creative or add more of a goal threat than Tadic has, with Southampton fans bemused as to why he hasn’t been given more minutes by Pellegrino.

Shane Long for Guido Carrillo

Carrillo has started Southampton’s last five matches in all competitions following his January move from Monaco, but he is still yet to get on the score-sheet with his performances not suggesting that he is going to get the goals to help the south coast outfit in their survival battle.

While he has looked decent in the air on occasions, he struggled from that point of view against Stoke last weekend and generally failed to have much of an impact at all, before he was replaced by Shane Long in the 79th minute.

While the Republic of Ireland is far from a prolific goalscorer with just one in the last year for club and country, his pace and the fact that he is a nuisance for defenders means he is particularly effective on the road, and that could be important to give Saints’ other attacking players more space in what is a season-defining clash against Newcastle.

Alexander-Arnold receives England boost, Liverpool fans react

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s football career is on an upward trajectory as he is now a regular feature in the Liverpool first-team squad.

It appears that his international future is also looking positive as he trained with the England senior squad on Tuesday.

According to Sky Sports, the full-back has not been added to Gareth Southgate’s setup for friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy, but was invited to train with the players at St George’s Park.

Alexander-Arnold is expected to play for the England Under-21s against Romania this week.

The 19-year-old has become a more regular figure at Anfield having started 18 matches in all competitions, including 13 in the Premier League.

The Merseyside-born teen has already built up a good relationship with the fans, and that was evident when they gave him words of encouragement following his disappointing display against Manchester United.

After hearing that Alexander-Arnold had been welcomed into senior training with England, Liverpool fans could not hide their joy.
