Outclassed by Neto: 4/10 Chelsea dud who completed 8 passes must be dropped

The sky is blue, the grass is green, and Chelsea endeavour to get themselves another red card.

It was Joao Pedro’s turn to get himself sent off against Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday night, but fortunately, it was late enough in the game to have no real impact.

Before the Brazilian was given his marching orders, the Conference League champions were fighting to hold onto their 1-0 lead, and while it wasn’t a vintage performance, that is just what they did.

With that said, there were a few players who struggled to make an impact, including one who was massively outshone by Pedro Neto and should be dropped for the weekend.

Neto's impressive game vs Benfica

In the build-up to the game, former Chelsea manager, and arguably the greatest in the club’s history, José Mourinho, described Neto as “one of the best wingers in the world.”

While such praise is probably a little over the top, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star made sure not to disappoint his fellow countryman with his performance.

The rapid winger didn’t score a goal or produce an assist in the match, but it was his cross to Alejandro Garnacho that preceded the Argentine’s cross, which ended in an own goal for the visitors.

However, it wasn’t just that one ball, as the dynamic 25-year-old was a constant threat down the wing and most certainly had the beating of his opposite man.

Unsurprisingly, the Blues’ “unsung hero,” as Joe Cole dubbed him during TNT’s coverage, also left an impression on the watching press, as football.london’s Bobby Vincent awarded him an 8/10 match rating at full-time.

In all, while it wasn’t necessarily the toughest of opponents or the most perfect of displays, Neto more than did his part in Chelsea’s win and simply has to start the next game, unlike another attacker he totally outshone.

The Chelsea star outshone by Neto

While much of the Chelsea team put in middling to good performances against Benfica, some struggled to make a positive impact, like Pedro and Jamie Gittens.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, those two were only given 30 minutes to try to influence the game, so you can forgive them for underwhelming on the night, which is an excuse that cannot be extended to Tyrique George.

Maresca handed the Cobham graduate his second start of the campaign, but instead of scoring a goal and providing an assist like he did against Lincoln City, he was practically anonymous.

It might sound somewhat harsh, but it was easy to forget that the Pensioners were even playing someone up top, as, unlike Neto on the right and Garnacho on the left, the Englishman never seemed to be involved at all.

This is an opinion shared by Vincent, who gave the youngster a 4/10 match rating on the night, writing that he ‘didn’t get involved too much’ and that ‘it feels too often as if games pass him by.’

Unsurprisingly, his statistics more than justify such an appraisal, as in 61 minutes of action, the youngster amassed a combined expected goal and assists figure of 0.13, took one shot on target, completed eight passes, took just 15 touches, didn’t complete a pass and didn’t play a single key pass.

The London-born gem is clearly a talented player; his youth numbers, cameos last season, and performance last week suggest as much, but it’s crystal clear that he’s not someone who can lead the line for Chelsea.

Therefore, to improve the team and for George’s own sake, Maresca should take him out of the starting lineup for the game against Liverpool this weekend.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs Lyon: Alessia Russo's opener counts for nothing! Gunners fail to capitalise on fast start as Champions League title defence begins with defeat and winless run goes on

Just six months after Arsenal stunned Lyon on their own patch in the Champions League semi-finals on their way to a second European triumph, the French giants got some revenge on Tuesday night as they spoiled the start of the Gunners' title defence with a 2-1 victory that, in truth, flattered the holders. Alessia Russo gave the hosts the lead with seven minutes on the clock but once Melchie Dumornay had quickly cancelled that out, it was all Lyon as two goals from the Haitian star secured all three points for the eight-time winners.

Russo's early strike was a real moment of quality, too, both in the finish and the excellent footwork from Beth Mead that set it up. However, it seemed to serve to only poke the bear as Lyon battled back ferociously with some relentless play throughout the first half in particular. It was a gift that helped them draw level, as goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar passed the ball to Dumornay when playing out from the back under no pressure, but the 22-year-old's second was a stunner, one she sent flying into the top corner from 20 yards out.

Lyon should've added to that lead multiple times but efforts either flew off target or were parried away by Van Domselaar, who did make amends for her earlier blunder with a terrific double stop just before the break especially. Arsenal couldn't make them rue that wastefulness, either, with chances few and far between bar Mariona Caldentey's well-saved effort a minute after Dumornay's second and Caitlin Foord's strike just wide in the final seconds.

It means it's now four games without a winner for the Gunners, after draws against Manchester United and Aston Villa were followed up with defeat at Manchester City at the weekend and now this loss. It's the first time since January 2022 that they have endured such a barren run. Five months after winning the Champions League, head coach Renee Slegers isn't under any real pressure in terms of her job, it must be said, but she and her Arsenal team are in terms of regaining some momentum and getting their season back on track for success.

AFPGoalkeeper & Defence

Daphne van Domselaar (3/10):

Made a real blunder for Lyon's first goal and her distribution was questionable for the second, too. Made amends to an extent with some terrific saves but the damage was already done.

Emily Fox (4/10):

Was overwhelmed in the first half in particular, dealing with Bacha and Diani both running down her side. Could've done more at times but also needed more help.

Katie Reid (4/10):

Her most difficult night of the season but she still wasn't the most culpable.

Steph Catley (4/10):

Lost the ball far too often in dangerous areas.

Taylor Hinds (3/10):

Caught out of position too often as Lyon thrived out wide.

Kim Little (5/10):

Kept the ball better than most, though the bar wasn't very high.

Mariona Caldentey (4/10):

Poor awareness led to her giving the ball away for Lyon's second goal. A surprisingly sloppy performance from the Ballon d'Or runner-up.

Frida Maanum (4/10):

Battled well off the ball, winning most of her duels, but was on the fringes of the game in an attacking sense all night.

Getty Images SportAttack

Chloe Kelly (3/10):

Could not get involved at all in attack and didn't do enough defensively to help deal with Bacha, who always had so much space coming forward from left-back.

Alessia Russo (5/10):

Took her goal brilliantly. That was about the only service she had all night, however.

Beth Mead (5/10):

Showed great footwork and vision to pick out Russo for the opening goal but struggled to make much of an impact after that.

Caitlin Foord (6/10):

Arsenal's liveliest introduction, she was not far away from equalising in the final moments.

Olivia Smith (5/10):

Battled well and won plenty of duels but couldn't really get anything going in attack.

Kyra Cooney-Cross (N/A):

Made a rare appearance in the final 15 minutes.

Stina Blackstenius (N/A):

On for the final 15 minutes but didn't get any service.

Katie McCabe (N/A):

A late sub.

Renee Slegers (5/10):

Was too predictable with her team selection and set-up, and the same with her subs. Didn't do anything to give Lyon a particularly different look going forward in order to help Arsenal get back into the game.

Liverpool now "confident" of signing England star in "huge" 2026 coup

Liverpool are now believed to be “confident” of completing the signing of an England international next summer, in what would be a “huge coup” for them.

Slot's explains decision to replace Kerkez

The Reds secured a priceless late 1-0 win away to Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, eventually grinding down their opponents thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty deep into stoppage time.

Numerous Liverpool players struggled to hit top form, not least Milos Kerkez, who was replaced before half-time, but Arne Slot has discussed his decision to bring on Andy Robertson in place of him.

“Not only the yellow card but also that afterwards he played the ball, no foul at all, but the referee blew his whistle, which can always happen because this happens in football. But the reaction of the fans and I also saw players of them also trying to go to the referee [saying], ‘If you think this is a foul, maybe you should give a yellow for it.’

“Which would have been ridiculous of course, but then it is a risk. The only way we could lose this game is if we are down to 10 because with 11 v 11 we could have drawn it, but we could never have lost it because they have never been… in our 18-yard box. So, then the only way you can lose it is if we go down to 10 and I didn’t want to take that risk, which was hard for Milos because normally you don’t have to take a player off if he has a yellow before, but I felt this was the best choice to make.”

Away from the on-pitch action for Liverpool, a significant new transfer claim has emerged, as the Reds continue to eye new signings.

Liverpool "confident" of signing England ace

Speaking to Football Insider, journalist Pete O’Rourke said that Liverpool remain “confident” of signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi next summer, having failed to snap him up on deadline day.

“If Guehi does run down his contract and become a free agent, it could be an open race for him. It will depend on who offers him the best deal, and Liverpool right now are still confident that they can land Guehi if he explores his options as a free agent.

“It does seem Liverpool will wait until next summer to try and push through a deal for Guehi having come so close to signing him in the summer before the deal fell through.

“There are clubs across Europe looking at Guehi because the chance to sign a proven Premier League player and England international on a free would be a huge coup. It’s an open race as things stand, but Liverpool have done some of the hard work already, and they hope that will give them the edge to get a deal over the line.”

Missing out on Guehi was such a big blow for Liverpool, leaving them short of depth at centre-back, but he should still be considered their priority defensive signing heading into 2026.

The Palace and England ace is such an impressive figure, both on and off the pitch, and he possesses the quality on the ball, calm out of possession and leadership to be a fantastic addition for the Reds, completing 93.6% of his passes for the Three Lions in World Cup qualifying.

Arne Slot could now have to axe this Liverpool underperformer after a disastrous display away at Burnley.

Hopefully, the “sensational” Guehi still sees Liverpool as his preferred choice when next summer rolls around, ignoring potential interest from some other huge clubs in the process.

Sunderland made shock bid to sign striker similar to Arsenal star Gyokeres

The last two Premier League seasons have seen all three of the newly promoted sides get instantly relegated, but Sunderland are making some big moves in the transfer market in an attempt to break the pattern.

Of the Black Cats’ ten biggest signings, six of them have come in this transfer window. The most expensive of the bunch has been 21-year-old midfielder, Habib Diarra, who joined from Strasbourg for £30 million.

Regis Le Bris has brought in a good mix of players who are varied in their positions and their age profiles. Unproven youngsters like Noah Sadiki and Chemsdine Talbi have been balanced with seasoned pros like Granit Xhaka and Reinildo Mandava.

These new signings integrated with Le Bris’ playoff-winning squad already make a team that are well-situated to fight for survival, but Sunderland aren’t finished there, as it has been revealed that they have been pushing to bring in a Premier League-proven striker.

Sunderland made shock move for Calvert-Lewin

Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincelebrates scoring their first goal

TalkSport’s Alex Crook has reported that Sunderland approached Calvert-Lewin earlier in the window. Calvert-Lewin is currently a free agent after his contract with Everton expired. While Sunderland have already displayed a willingness to be bold this transfer window, a move for an England-capped player would be a big statement.

Crook’s report indicates that at this moment in time, the negotiations between the two parties have stalled due to Calvert-Lewin’s desire to play for a club higher up the table. The Englishman has also been linked with moves to Manchester United and Leeds; however, Ruben Amorim’s side appears on the verge of signing Benjamin Sesko, and Leeds were put off by his wage demands that were reportedly around the £100,000 a week mark.

At £5.2 million a year in wages plus a potential signing-on fee, a move for the striker looks feasible for Sunderland, given how much they’ve already been willing to spend this window. Interestingly, When Calvert-Lewin was being linked to a move to Old Trafford, Alan Pardew controversially said that “on their day there’s not much between” him and Arsenal’s new striker, Viktor Gyokeres.

Since these negotiations took place, Sunderland have signed Chelsea’s Marc Guiu on loan, but as Calvert-Lewin is a free agent, they could easily go back in for him if he doesn’t find a preferable club.

Calvert-Lewin's defensive value

Many Sunderland fans may question why they are looking to sign a striker who hasn’t registered more than 11 goal involvements in any of the last four seasons. However, as Calvert-Lewin’s danger in front of goal has decreased, his abilities as “the first defender” have improved.

In comparison to some of the best strikers in the league, Calvert-Lewin has outperformed them drastically in numerous defensive actions.

Le Bris may not see Calvert-Lewin as a striker who will score bags of goals and keep Sunderland up, but as a rotation player who can see out games and defend from the front, helping ensure that Sunderland don’t concede too many late goals.

In this sense, the signings of Guiu and Calvert-Lewin could work well together as they provide Le Bris with multiple options depending on the situation.

Joao Felix makes bold Saudi Pro League title claim after 'we want more' message from Cristiano Ronaldo – with Al-Nassr being billed as an 'amazing' team

Joao Felix has boldly claimed Al-Nassr will be "closer to the title" in the Saudi Pro League this season, with the Portuguese thriving in an "amazing" team alongside countryman Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 sounded a "we want more" message after helping to extend a perfect start to the 2025-26 campaign, with Felix very much on board when it comes to trophy chasing.

  • Perfect start: Maximum points for Al-Nassr

Al-Nassr have picked up nine points from three games, registering 12 goals in the process. Five of those were recorded in a convincing victory over Al-Riyadh last time out. Felix and Ronaldo bagged a brace apiece as Jorge Jesus’ side made light work of derby rivals.

Transfer justified: Felix enjoying fine form

Ex-Atletico Madrid and Chelsea forward Felix was named Player of the Match for the second time this term, with the 25-year-old saying of his flying start to life in the Middle East: "My team-mates make the things look easier. As a team we are amazing and then individually we have a lot of good players. And, if we keep doing well as individuals, the team will go well as well. And if we are all together, we’re going to win game after game, and we will be closer to the title."

  • More to come: Al-Nassr just getting started

Felix, who has five goals after netting a hat-trick on his Saudi Pro League debut, went on to say of Al-Nassr putting down an early marker to their rivals: "We are doing a good job; game after game we are getting better. Today we did a great match. Unfortunately, we concede one goal; we don’t like to concede, we like to keep the clean sheet. But, in general, we were very good."

Rocky Flintoff picked by father Andrew for England Lions tour of Australia

Bashir, Hartley, Tongue, Turner and Cook among notable inclusions for tour in new year

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Dec-2024Rocky Flintoff has been handed an official call-up to the England Lions squad for next month’s tour of Australia, where his fortunes will once again be overseen by his father, Andrew.Flintoff, 16, was a last-minute addition to the Lions’ trip to South Africa earlier this month – his father’s maiden tour as head coach – where he featured in the one-off tour match against a CSA Invitational XI in Cape Town, making 4 from three balls in his only innings. His inclusion continues a startling rise, which began with his precocious displays for Lancashire 2nd XI in April, continued through his multi-format debuts for England’s Under-19 teams against Sri Lanka in July, and culminated in his first professional contract with Lancashire in August and subsequent first-class debut. Now he has been included in a Lions tour that could offer several pointers for the senior squad’s challenge in next year’s Ashes, not least for the incumbent Test spinner, Shoaib Bashir, for whom this will be an opportunity to fine-tune his game in Australian conditions.Bashir, 21, was himself fast-tracked by England for the tour of India in January, and has played in 15 of England’s 17 Tests in 2024. He will travel under the tutelage of Graeme Swann, the offspinner who played a key role in England’s last Ashes win in Australia in 2010-11, and will have the opportunity to play in three competitive fixtures in Brisbane and Sydney, culminating in an unofficial Test against Australia A. Lancashire’s left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, who featured in all five Tests in India but has not been picked since, will also make the trip.Brendon McCullum, England’s head coach, had flagged the likelihood of Bashir’s inclusion in the Lions back in October, with the sense emerging from his recent displays in Pakistan and New Zealand, where he took 17 wickets at 50.58 in six Tests, that his game has not progressed quite as quickly as England had hoped.Shoaib Bashir could play a key role in next winter’s Ashes•Getty Images”For Bash, the opportunity to be able to get some experience in those conditions could be really vital for us,” McCullum said in October, at the conclusion of the Pakistan tour. “That’s the beauty of the Lions programme, you have the opportunity to get some cricket into guys. With Freddie there as well now and in charge of the Lions, he’s got a very similar view on the game to what I’ve got, so there’ll be consistency of message and that’s something that we’ve got to look at.”Among the fast bowlers, Josh Tongue is a notable inclusion. He made two Test appearances at Lord’s in 2023, where he impressed with his sharp pace and ability to generate steep bounce from a good length, but has been sidelined by injury for long periods, including a setback that ruled him out of a possible white-ball debut in the Caribbean in November. He has been handed a call-up alongside John Turner, another quick bowler who is capable of 90mph pace, and Essex’s Sam Cook – one of the most prolific bowlers in county cricket, but whose opportunities had previously been limited by James Anderson’s presence in the England set-up.Related

Matches and tours of Australia are always important and we relish the opportunity to test ourselves against quality opposition. This tour allows us to evaluate performances, refine preparation and continue working with some of the best emerging talent in the country.”I’m also delighted to see Josh Tongue returning to competitive cricket. The most expensive cars owned by footballers in detail: 10 Kevin De Bruyne McLaren P1 – £1.15m

A Manchester City legend, Kevin De Bruyne recently departed the Etihad after a hugely successful 10-year stay. Before leaving, De Bruyne was picking up a whopping £400,000-a-week with the Sky Blues, so it shouldn’t come as no surprise that he owns a car worth more than £1m.

According to reports, the attacking midfielder has a McLaren P1 which has a valuation of £1.15m. One of the best sports cars around, the P1 has a total of 903 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds.

9 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Ferrari LaFerrari – £1.2m

Only 499 Ferrari LaFerrari’s have been made, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one of two known footballers to be an owner of the £1.2m supercar.

The former Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Chelsea striker is known for his lavish lifestyles and that is shown in his car collection with the Ferrari LaFerrari dubbed the ‘most powerful street-legal supercar the Italian manufacturer has produced’.

8 Son Heung-min Ferrari LaFerrari – £1.2m

As well as Aubameyang, Tottenham icon Son Heung-min also owns a Ferrari LaFerrari, although he ditched the iconic red version for black.

The South Korean superstar was told by Spurs that ‘he could not own a red one due to their rivalry with Arsenal’, with the supercar reaching a top speed of 227mph and boasting a 6.3-litre V12 engine.

7 Samuel Eto’o Aston Martin One-77 – £1.3m

Former Barcelona and Inter Milan star Samuel Eto’o retired back in 2019, however, he still made enough during his playing days to splash out on an Aston Martin One-77.

Worth £1.3m, three-time Champions League winner Eto’o is the proud owner of the supercar, which is rarer than the Ferrari LaFerrari, with only 77 units ever made back in 2012.

6 Zlatan Ibrahimovic Ferrari Monza SP2 – £1.4m

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was an extraordinary player in his prime, and his lavish lifestyle saw him purchase a Ferrari Monza SP2 for his 38th birthday back in 2019.

It set the former Swedish striker back £1.4m, with only 499 being made in the world. The value of the rare supercar is now thought to be worth £2m, so Ibrahimovic could make a tidy profit if he cashes in.

5 Karim Benzema Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang – £1.56m

French forward Karim Benzema is currently earning a whopping £830,000-a-week in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad after joining in 2023, and he has quite a collection of luxury cars.

His most valuable and fastest vehicle is the Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang, with only five ever made in the world. Chrome painted and a body made up of polished aluminium and black carbon fibre, it is thought to be worth more than £1.5m.

4 Neymar Lamborghini Veneno – £2.5m

Neymar’s net worth is thought to be around £280m, so it’s no shock that he can afford a £2.5m Lamborghini Veneno, one of just 13 to have been produced.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star’s supercar is powered by a 6.5L V12 engine and is capable of reaching a top speed of 221 mph.

In total, Neymar’s car collection is thought to be worth a combined £11m, which includes an Aston Martin Vulcan and Maserati MC12.

3 Erling Haaland Mercedes AMG One – £2.7m

A goalscoring machine for Manchester City, Erling Haaland’s new Etihad contract sees him pick up £525,000-a-week, which works out at over £27m-a-year.

His rare Mercedes AMG One is worth £2.7m, just over five weeks’ worth of wages, and can reach a top speed of just under 220mph. There are only 275 Mercedes AMG One’s around, and Haaland can call himself one of the lucky owners.

2 Cristiano Ronaldo Bugatti La Voiture Noire – £12m

Earning a staggering £172m-a-year in Saudi Arabia, Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly the owner of the only Bugatti La Voiture Noire ever made.

Worth £12m, the Bugatti La Voiture Noire was produced in 2019 and is described as ‘the rarest and most exclusive of all modern Bugattis’.

In total, Ronaldo’s car collection is thought to be worth around £19m, a figure which works out at around six weeks’ wages with Al-Nassr.

1 Lionel Messi Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti – £25m

Top of the charts, allegedly, is Lionel Messi and his Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti. It is claimed that Messi actually outbid his rival Ronaldo for the classic Ferrari at a cost of £25m.

Only four Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti’s were made in the 1950s, and it is seen as a must have vintage car, powered by a 4.0L V12 engine and able to reach a top speed of 186 mph.

The bidding started at around £17m and ended on £25m, with Messi thought to be the winner of the auction in Paris back in 2016.

Big Son upgrade: Spurs now eyeing "one of the best LW's in Europe"

With the season finally coming to a close, Tottenham Hotspur have a monumental summer ahead of them.

For example, alongside potentially replacing Ange Postecoglou, Daniel Levy and Co must go big in the transfer window to ensure the team don’t endure another Premier League campaign like this one.

On top of making sure they keep their own stars like Cristian Romero, the North Londoners need to bring in new ones to help them climb up the table and make a good account of themselves in the Champions League.

Fortunately, reports have recently linked the club to an attacker who could help them do just that, an attacker who’d be a massive upgrade on Son Heung-min.

Tottenham transfer news

Before we get to the star in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other brilliant players who have been linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks, like Leroy Sané and Xavi Simons.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former’s contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of this month and would therefore be a free signing, which could end up being an incredible deal, as in just 2377 minutes of football across 45 appearances this season, the German international scored 13 goals and provided six assists.

Simons, on the other hand, would cost the club around £67m, but even then, it would be hard to argue that’s not a fair fee, as the Flying Dutchman managed to score 11 goals and provide eight assists in 33 appearances this season.

Yet, there is another, even more impressive winger being linked with Tottenham: Bradley Barcola.

Yes, according to a recent report from Caught Offside, Spurs are among several Premier League clubs who are incredibly interested in the Paris Saint-Germain phenomenon.

In fact, the story has claimed that the Lilywhites, Arsenal and Manchester City have already sent scouts to watch the French international.

However, it could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, as while PSG do not want to sell the 22-year-old, they do value him at up to €120m, which is about £101m.

Paris St Germain's BradleyBarcolareacts

With that said, given Barcola’s immense ability and potential, this may be a deal worth breaking the bank on, especially as he’d be the perfect Son upgrade.

How Barcola compares to Son

While Barcola can and has played in other positions in the past, it’s abundantly clear that his preferred and best role is leftwing.

Therefore, depending on what else happens in the summer transfer window, one of his main competitors for game time at Spurs next season, were he to sign for them, would be Son Heung-min.

With that said, who comes out on top when we compare them? Well, from a raw output perspective, it’s a rather one-sided affair.

For example, the incredible Lyon-born ace, who’s “one of the best LW’s in Europe,” according to analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 21 goals and provided 19 assists in 58 appearances, totalling 3643 minutes this season, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.45 games, or every 91.07 minutes.

In contrast, the North Londoners captain scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists in 46 appearances, totalling 3189 minutes, which comes out to a goal involvement every other game, or one every 138.65 minutes.

Okay, what about their underlying numbers from this season? Which attacker comes out on top when we take a look under the hood?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s the “devastating” star, as he was described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, who once again emerges victorious here, and by quite some margin at that.

For example, while there are a few metrics in which the South Korean superstar is able to hold his own and actually come out ahead, it’s the UCL winner who does far better in the vast majority of relevant areas.

Ultimately, while Son has been an incredible player for Spurs for so long, Barcola is simply the better winger in practically every way, and therefore, Levy and Co should be doing all they can to sign him this summer.
