A new Zubimendi: Berta makes first move to sign "Rodri-like" CM for Arsenal

Unlike some of their Premier League rivals, Arsenal’s summer signings are looking better with every passing gameweek.

For example, he might’ve started slowly, but Viktor Gyokeres already has six goals to his name this season, and Noni Madueke was just starting to pick up steam before his injury.

Moreover, with Gabriel Magalhães’ recent injury, Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie are looking like incredible buys.

With all that said, an argument could be made that Martin Zubimendi has been Arsenal’s best signing of all, so fans should be excited about reports linking the club to someone who could be an heir to the Spaniard and has been compared to Rodri.

Arsenal target their next Martin Zubimendi

With reports coming out about Zubimendi’s move to Arsenal as early as January, the excitement for the move wasn’t quite as intense as it perhaps should’ve been when it finally came to pass in the summer.

However, since then, the Spaniard has more than proven himself to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

Whether it’s putting in a perfectly timed tackle to shield the back four, or driving with the ball and delivering a pinpoint accurate pass to a forward, the former Real Sociedad star really does it all.

Therefore, it makes sense that the club would already be looking for a younger gem who, over the next five to six years, can be moulded into his long-term heir.

According to a recent report from Spain, one of the young prospects that could sign for this purpose is Chema Andrés.

The story has revealed that, alongside Manchester City, Arsenal are already making moves to sign the VfB Stuttgart gem, who has had an excellent start to the season.

However, a potential roadblock for Andrea Berta and Co is that he’s a former Real Madrid prospect, and the Spanish giants have a buy-back clause worth around €13.5m for 2026, which is approximately £12m.

If Arsenal want to sign the young Spaniard, they’ll almost certainly have to pay significantly more than that, but even so, Andrés would be worth it as a future Zubimendi heir.

Why Chema Andrés could be Arsenal's future Zubimendi

So what is it that makes Zubimendi such an incredible footballer and has seen him so quickly become essential to Arsenal’s midfield?

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, to put it simply, it’s his impressive combination of defensive nous and sensational ability on the ball, which has seen him already amass a tally of three goal involvements in 11 league games from the six position.

The good news is that, while it’s still very early on in his career, Chema Andrés appears to share this ability to heavily influence play in both halves.

For example, just last month, respected u23 scout Antonio Mango described his defensive abilities as “Rodri-like,” noting that he “simplifies the game and makes the basics look effortless.”

Then, when it comes to going the other way, Mango has praised him for his “expansive passing range”, and fellow talent scout Jacek Kulig has dubbed him an “orchestrator” thanks to his incredible “vision” and “football IQ.”

Unsurprisingly, the 20-year-old “supernova” of a talent, as dubbed by one analyst, also has some incredible underlying numbers to more than justify the hype.

Finally, on top of doing business at the club level, the youngster is also making waves on the international scene.

After making ten appearances for Spain’s u19s, he skipped the u20s altogether and has now made four appearances for the u21s, with the last coming on Tuesday night.

Ultimately, Zubimendi should be Arsenal’s starting six for quite some time, but if they can, they should do what they can to sign Andrés, as at just 20 years old, he could be the long-term heir.

Liverpool star is quickly becoming their biggest "disaster" since Keita

Liverpool look more and more unlikely by the game that they will retain the Premier League title.

Of course, collecting the top-flight trophy two seasons on the trot is a difficult feat even when you’re all guns blazing.

But, it’s definitely made more tricky when you assess how quickly the wheels are falling off Arne Slot’s title defence right now.

The Reds are already up to five defeats in league action this season, with newly promoted Sunderland only on two losses, in stark contrast.

Slot was also significantly backed in the summer, with the summer transfer business at Anfield no doubt catching the eye, when you consider a jaw-dropping £415m was splashed out by the Merseyside giants.

The likes of Alexander Isak and Milos Kerkez have really struggled to get going, having cost a substantial £165m alone to get through the door.

But, there is one high-profile name that is in very real danger of becoming Slot’s own Naby Keita. Yes, things really do look that bad at the moment.

The numbers behind Keita's Liverpool disaster

When Keita arrived at Anfield in 2018, there was a lot of fanfare surrounding his high-profile signing.

After all, Jurgen Klopp boldly announcde that the Guinean was the “best player in the league” in the Bundesliga when leaving behind RB Leipzig for a shot in England for a whopping a whopping £48m.

In Klopp’s defence, Keita had collected 16 goals and assists combined across all competitions for Leipzig during his swansong campaign and the former Reds number 8 did score some beautifully taken goals during his stint on Merseyside, as can be seen watching the entertaining highlight reel above.

But, with all the hype that had surrounded the capture at the time, it would have been Keita’s constant in-and-out presence in the treatment room that would have irritated Liverpool fans the most, with a staggering 122 games missed through injury for club and country across his five seasons in England.

In the end, he was let go at the expiry of his contract with Werder Bremen, with just 11 goals and seven assists to shout about.

Slot will pray he doesn’t have another Keita-like situation unfolding right now as Liverpool struggle for consistency, with another mega-money signing at risk of fading into the background.

Liverpool's Naby Keita repeat

The failed signing of Keita still stands as Liverpool’s eighth most expensive signing of all time.

Thankfully, above the hot-and-cold 30-year-old’s name in the rankings are the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alisson, and Virgil Van Dijk, who are all figures Slot knows he can rely on.

Unfortunately, the same is yet to be applied to Florian Wirtz, who comes in as the Reds’ second most expensive capture at an astronomical £115m fee.

The German’s arrival from Bayer Leverkusen met with the same Keita-level hysteria, having been dubbed a “generational” talent by sports media professional Christian Nyari just last season.

With 57 goals and 65 assists under his belt for Leverkusen, it can be rationalised as to why Liverpool blew such a large chunk of their budget on Wirtz instantly coming good.

Indeed, Reds journalist Bence Boscak pleaded in the summer that Slot and Co needed to land his signature “whatever” the price may be.

Yet, much like they found out with Keita, blistering form in the Bundesliga doesn’t necessarily mean they will instantly hit the ground running on English shores, with Wirtz still yet to collect a single goal or assist in Premier League action.

Wirtz was particularly ineffective last time out as Liverpool were reminded of how far they’ve fallen in such a short space of time against Manchester City, with an unmemorable 39 touches of the ball seeing the German fail to amass one single key pass.

It’s even clearer from the graphic above how much the number 7 has been “struggling” – as journalist Mark Ogden has noted – in his new surroundings, with both his take-on success percentage rate and duels being won per ninety minutes success rate taking a significant hit.

Analyst Darnish Iqbal has even branded the deal as a “disaster”, with it not being a stretch to state that it is Liverpool’s biggest disappointment in the transfer window since Keita joined way back in 2018. Perhaps the Reds should avoid the Bundesliga for now?

Wirtz, hopefully, won’t fall victim to Keita’s same fate in leaving for cheap though, with glimmers of his quality here and there – as seen in the playmaker amassing five key passes against Real Madrid – meaning Liverpool will hold onto him for the time being, praying he hits his Leverkusen heights on a consistent basis down the line.

Secret Rohl talks took place while everyone thought Rangers were after Muscat

It looks as though chairman Andrew Cavenagh was fully invested in hiring Danny Rohl as Rangers’ next manager when everyone thought Kevin Muscat would take charge at Ibrox.

Rangers make Rohl their new manager

Things have moved quickly over the past 24 hours or so, with Muscat’s talks with the Gers falling through when it looked as though he was the front-runner to come in as Russell Martin’s successor at Ibrox.

Rohl has been confirmed as Rangers’ next boss instead, with the German most recently in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, and once enjoying a coaching spell at Bayern Munich, working under legendary boss Hansi Flick.

The 36-year-old has constantly been mentioned as one of the favourites to take charge of the Gers, alongside Muscat and Steven Gerrard, with the latter another who decided not to take the job and enjoy a second stint at Ibrox.

After a dire start to the Scottish Premiership season, Rangers fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Rohl is the right choice, and it looks as though he may have been the leading option for the Scottish giants all along, following a fresh claim.

Cavenagh held secret talks with Rohl during Muscat saga

According to reports, Cavenagh held talks with Rohl last week about becoming Rangers’ next manager, amid constant claims suggesting Muscat would be the man to come in. They did then back away from the discussions when the Australian became the leading target again, prior to his move collapsing.

Only time will tell whether the former Wednesday boss is the right choice for the Gers, but there is plenty to like about him from the off, as he likely prepares to take charge of his first game away to Brann in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

At just 36 years of age, he represents a young and long-term option for Rangers, rather than going with the safer bet of an older manager who knows about getting teams out of trouble rather than adopting an attractive playing style.

As mentioned, Rohl excelled at Wednesday, coming in when the Owls looked destined for relegation from the Championship in October 2023, only to turn their fortunes around and finish the 2023/24 campaign in 20th place.

Rohl won't like him: Rangers must drop Ibrox star with "big potential"

It’s unlikely Smith will persist with this Rangers underperformer.

By
Ben Gray

Oct 20, 2025

Interestingly, it does look as though Muscat’s arrival at Rangers was never as concrete as reported by some, hence Cavenagh’s talks with Rohl last week, and hopefully, the German ends up being an inspired choice who gradually brings the glory days back to Ibrox as the months and years pass.

Beware Kylian Mbappe! Barcelona ‘tweaked four things’ to prepare for ‘world-class’ Real Madrid star with Pau Cubarsi ready to handle 'agile and quick' Vinicius Jr in Clasico showdown

Barcelona are preparing meticulously for El Clasico against Real Madrid, with defender Pau Cubarsi revealing they are changing four key defensive elements to counter the threat of Kylian Mbappe. The 18-year-old prodigy is gearing up for a tough test against the French forward and Vinicius Junior when the injury-ravaged teams go head-to-head in Sunday's headline clash.

Barcelona’s fragile defence and tactical overhaul

As the Clasico countdown intensifies, Barcelona’s defensive line faces its toughest test of the season. La Blaugrana arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu amid an uncertain run that saw them lose to Paris Saint-Germain and suffer a 4-1 defeat to Sevilla, exposing Hansi Flick’s high defensive line and a lack of sharpness when pressed by top opponents. With key players like Robert Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen, Gavi and Joan Garcia out injured, Barca's preparation for the clash has been far from easy.

To prepare, Cubarsi says Barcelona have “tweaked four things” with the aim of cutting off Madrid’s attacks and silencing Mbappe. Flick’s system has shifted slightly from a wide build-up to a narrower defensive structure, ensuring faster recovery runs and tighter marking on Madrid’s forwards.

In contrast, Los Blancos though also struggling with injuries to David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Dani Carvajal, the club have leaned heavily on the brilliance of Mbappe, who leads La Liga with 10 goals, and Vinicius, whose pace and dribbling remain game-changing. The French forward's explosiveness has turned him into Madrid’s focal point, while the Brazilian desire to regain his elite status adds edge to his game.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportCubarsi reveals Barcelona's defensive 'tweaks'

Wins against Girona and Olympiacos in the past week have lifted Barca's spirits, but defender Cubarsi says a lot more work has been going on in the background to ensure they are ready for the upcoming test, focusing on Mbappe and Vinicius in particular.

“Everyone knows who Mbappe is. We have to keep an eye on him and all of Madrid's world-class players," Cubarsi told reporters. “We've tweaked four things and it has to go well for us. We'll have to stop him in the best way possible, but especially focus on ourselves. We have to continue with our philosophy. Last year went well. Now the teams have evolved, but if we tweak a few things, we can improve."

Asked about Vinicius, he added: "He's an agile and quick striker who moves into space. We have to be very alert at the back to stop him."

The Barca centre-back further emphasised the importance of Flick, despite the fact that he is very likely to miss the bench against Madrid after being sent off against Girona. "He's important inside and outside. What we want is for him to help us from within; and if not, from outside," Cubarsi said.

Barca must be extra cautious with Madrid's leading men

Madrid’s forward line is the most lethal in Europe this season, powered by a reinvigorated Mbappe and a determined Vinicius. Mbappe’s 10 goals and two assists in just nine La Liga appearances have redefined Madrid’s attacking identity. His leadership and relentless drive have filled the void left by Karim Benzema, while his chemistry with Arda Guler has become Madrid’s main creative weapon.

Vinicius, however, enters the Clasico with something to prove. Once the unstoppable left-wing force, he has struggled for rhythm and consistency under Xabi Alonso. His five goals and four assists in nine games reflect flashes of brilliance, but not dominance. Reports of him rejecting a new contract, wanting to be the highest-paid player at Madrid, have added an extra layer of tension to his form. Yet, Mbappe’s vocal support of him has steadied the dynamic. With Madrid also missing key defenders, Alonso will rely heavily on their directness and speed to test Cubarsi and Ronald Araujo early.

GettyFlick's men 'very positive' ahead of Clasico test

Despite recent setbacks, Flick’s Barcelona still believe they can outplay Madrid with patience and identity. The German manager has urged his players to “trust their instincts” while correcting positional discipline, something missing in recent games. Flick’s expected absence from the touchline due to suspension will be a psychological blow, but his tactical imprint remains clear.

After a 6-1 win against the Greek side in midweek, Cubarsi feels positive as he addressed his ability to adapt to a new position in defence.

“Scoring six goals for a Champions League team boosts your morale and helps you be more focused in front of goal. It's a very, very positive thing,” he said. "I haven't played that many games on the left and I felt like I was in a more familiar position, but it's also helped me improve football-wise. It doesn't change much, although on the right, since I've played there more, I find space and open players more quickly. I like the left, and it will help me in the future."

He further added: “We're all at a spectacular level. I'm also very comfortable with Eric [Garcia], just as I was at the Olympics alongside him. With this season's center backs, we can achieve great things.”

Title winner once called "best coach in the world" is "waiting" for Man Utd

A title-winning manager once described as the “best coach in the world” has been mentioned as an option for Manchester United, should Ruben Amorim lose his job.

Amorim positive after Man Utd's win over Sunderland

The Red Devils picked up a vital three points in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, overcoming Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko.

Speaking after the game, Amorim assessed a positive day at the office for United, with the Portuguese potentially even saving his job by winning.

“That is the kind of game where when we are not playing well, we are defending well. Today was not a perfect performance. We had our moments. Senne [Lammens] did really well also. We were competitive and an adult team today. We need to win these games and win clean sheets.”

For United and their manager, this really did feel like a must-win game, with dropped points at home to a newly-promoted team feeling disastrous, even though Sunderland have been in good form.

There’s now a two-week break before the Red Devils make the trip to Liverpool after the international break, and while Amorim is safe for now, other managers continue to be linked with his job.

Barcelona legend Xavi waiting for Man Utd job, snubs Saudi offers

According to Caught Offside, Barcelona legend Xavi “could be a name to watch” for Manchester United, should the club part ways with Amorim, with the Spaniard seemingly “waiting” for the job.

The 45-year-old is said to be keen on the idea of managing in England, and has “instructed his representatives to reject offers from Saudi Pro League clubs”.

Xavi would be an interesting option for United, having won the La Liga title with Barca in 2022/23, years after a legendary playing career there. He adopts an attacking 4-3-3 formation, which could go down well with supporters who don’t like Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, and Barca president Joan Laporta once heaped huge praise on him back in 2022.

“I am very lucky to have the best coach in the world, because Xavi, in addition to his great football knowledge, is a man who is always very interesting to listen to with his reasoning, who is also a club man and is very aligned with the club. We share moments together, and also we share much of everything that is being done, and I feel very accompanied and supported with Xavi and all his staff.”

Despite this, United have to be careful not to keep jumping from manager to manager, and should only hire a new head coach if they genuinely feel he is a vastly superior option to Amorim.

100% passing, 8 duels won: Man Utd star just outshone Mount & Sesko

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 4, 2025

The Red Devils’ current boss clearly needs to do better, but it is easy to envisage a scenario where Xavi comes in and also finds it hard. He could excel, in fairness, and is a legendary figure in the game, but holding fire for now is arguably the best option.

Sheringham 2.0: West Ham in race to sign Premier League "proven goalscorer"

On top of bringing through their own talented youngsters, West Ham United have made a habit of signing iconic players towards the end of their careers in recent decades.

For example, the likes of Ian Wright, Samir Nasri, Joe Cole – the second time round – and Freddie Ljungberg all donned the Claret and Blue in their latter playing years.

However, while many of these ageing stars were never really more than okay, there was one who did incredibly well in East London: Teddy Sheringham.

The boyhood fan joined the Hammers after leaving Portsmouth in the summer of 2004 and over the next three seasons would rack up 30 goals and six assists in 86 games, while also becoming the oldest goalscorer in Premier League history.

The Englishman was an excellent signing for West Ham, and so fans should be excited about reports linking them to someone who could be their new Sheringham.

West Ham target their new Sheringham

It’s been an interesting summer for West Ham United so far this year, as they have made a few signings that could genuinely improve the starting line-up, such as Kyle Walker-Peters and Mads Hermansen.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, they’ve still not done enough in the market, especially since the only out-and-out attacking addition so far has been Callum Wilson, who might be talented but is practically always injured.

Fortunately, the East Londoners appear to be targeting another centre-forward signing, someone who is older than the former Newcastle United star, but also has the potential to be more impactful and like Potter’s own Sheringham.

At least that is according to a recent report from The Sun, which has claimed West Ham are interested in signing Jamie Vardy.

The report has revealed that Hammers are one of a number of teams vying for the Englishman’s signature, including Brentford, Wrexham and Celtic, which seems to be his preferred destination at the moment.

However, as he is now a free agent, the Irons would surely be able to offer him a more lucrative contract than the Hoops, and the chance to keep on playing in the Premier League.

In all, if West Ham have the chance to sign Vardy, they should take it, as even at his age, he was effective in the top-flight, and could even become the new Sheringham.

Why Vardy could be the new Sheringham

Now, while we wouldn’t expect Vardy to be quite as successful at West Ham as Sheringham was, he certainly still has plenty to give and shares some key similarities with the retired great.

The first and unavoidable one is the simple fact that he’d be another star player joining the club in the final years of his career.

Secondly, he’s not just a great of his former club, but of the Premier League in general, thanks to his part in Leicester City’s most unlikely of triumphs a decade ago.

Moreover, he’s also a former England international, and while he was a part of the disastrous EURO 2016 campaign, he also made four appearances at the 2018 World Cup, where Gareth Southgate led the team to the semi-finals for the first time since 1990.

Finally, as he’s set to turn 39 in January, if the former Foxes legend was able to maintain his fitness and remain with the club for a couple of seasons, there is no reason why he couldn’t break Sheringham’s record of being the oldest goalscorer in Premier League history.

With all of that said and forgetting the comparisons to the former Irons star, the East Londoners would be wise to sign the 38-year-old regardless.

After all, despite playing for a terrible Leicester side last season that went back down to the Championship, he was still able to score ten goals and provide four assists in just 36 appearances, totalling 2899 minutes.

That means that the “proven goalscorer,” as dubbed by former professional Jermaine Pennant, was able to maintain an average of a goal involvement every 2.57 games, or every 207.07 minutes.

Having someone capable of that in the squad and on the bench in games could earn Potter and Co. a few more points across the season, which could be the difference in what feels like it’s going to be a brutal campaign.

Ultimately, while some might turn their noses up at signing someone so old, West Ham should do what they can to bring Vardy to the London Stadium this summer, as he could just be their next Sheringham.
