Spinners will play key role in Sydney – Shastri

India’s team director Ravi Shastri believes the spinners will have a key role to play in Thursday’s semi-final against hosts Australia at the SCG

‘Will treat Australia as just another opposition’ – Shastri

‘India one of top two fielding teams’

R Sridhar, India’s bowling coach, has called the current group of players “probably the fittest” in the World Cup, and believes their strong work ethic has given them an edge over other teams in the tournament.
“The most impressive part of their fielding is how they’ve enjoyed each other’s company on the ground,” Sridhar told ESPNcricinfo. “They have a keenness to hunt in packs, which is really impressive. The fact they’re supremely fit- probably the fittest in the world cup – helps a lot. Our fast bowlers are terrific athletes as well. A combination of all these means we’re probably one of the top two fielding teams.
“Our idea is to get our fielders to become the best they can be. To their credit, they’re an amazing bunch, and work their backs off. They actually keep pushing me to get more drills done. There’s a buzz and energy throughout the 50 overs.
“This bunch has been absolutely outstanding. They have a great pair of hands. This team plays the big matches really well and is used to playing at big crowds, so I think they will revel under pressure. “

India’s team director Ravi Shastri believes the spinners will have a key role to play in Thursday’s semi-final against hosts Australia at the SCG. India’s spin-duo of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been crucial in suffocating the opposition’s flow of runs during the middle overs this World Cup, and Shastri backed his slow bowlers to once again rise to the occasion.”It’s very important that they bowl well,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo. “They’ve been key to our success with wickets in the middle overs, and it gives the captain lot of options. There’s a great variety and balance in the attack. I’m sure spin will play an important role tomorrow.”Shastri also left open the possibility of MS Dhoni even resorting to spinners early in the innings: “You never know. It looks a good pitch for both sides and will likely last the duration of the game. It mainly depends on the weather. If it’s hot, the odd ball could just grip and we wouldn’t mind that one bit.”Ashwin and Jadeja have collected 21 wickets between them from seven matches at an average of 28.04. Backed by the longer boundaries in Australia, Ashwin, in particular, has tossed the ball up more often than before and made regular use of the offbreak, fetching him 12 scalps at an economy rate of 4.29, the third-best among spinners to have bowled at least 20 overs this World Cup.However, both Ashwin and Jadeja have enjoyed little success against Australia in the recent past. Glenn Maxwell, in particular, has hit the pair for 124 runs off just 78 balls at a strike-rate of 158.97. But B Arun, India’s bowling coach, remained unfazed and had only high praise for all his bowlers, who he felt “complemented” each other really well. He added that India would not alter their game plan to negotiate the threat of Australia’s batting power, and rather persist with a tried-and-tested winning formula.”Ashwin and Jadeja have been brilliant,” Arun said. “It’s been a great journey for Ashwin, who has rediscovered flight. He has been exceptionally good with his variations. Jadeja had a difficult time coming back from injury, but he too has done well to deliver at right time. The bowlers complement each other, learn from each other and take pride in bowling well as a unit. Tomorrow is just another game and we’ll take it as it comes. We’re going to go around with whatever has been working for us.”Ravi Shastri: “The bowlers learned a lot in that Test tour of Australia, where they bowled well in patches. They realised how important it is to bowl well as a unit”•Getty Images

India’s bowling unit has been one of the surprise packages of the tournament so far, constantly keeping batsmen on the back foot with a consistent line and length. After failing to bowl a team out even once in the tri- series against Australia and England in January, India’s attack bounced back strongly and has now snared 70 wickets from seven matches – the only team in the tournament to bundle out all their opponents. However, both Shastri and Arun weren’t surprised by the sudden turnaround from their bowlers.”Most of these bowlers were bowling well in patches in the Tests,” Arun explained. “The tri-series was a great experience and the bowlers did well. We analysed certain areas where they bowled well and areas where they went for runs. When they understood the best lengths to bowl on, they worked hard at doing that.”Sometimes, they were bowling a little too short, or bowling up to be driven. The lengths back home in India and in Australia vary a little bit, so they needed a little time to get used to it. Once they got it, they’ve been getting it right consistently for the last seven games.”Shastri felt the bowlers had all been both “brilliant” and adequately tested over the last month.”Their consistency is what has most impressed me,” he said. “They learned a lot in that Test tour of Australia, where they bowled well in patches. They realised how important it is to bowl well as a unit. They’ve done that from game one in this World Cup and been brilliant in all seven games.”When you play seven games, you would like to believe that you’ve been tested by one team or another. When you get guys like Gayle smacking you all over the park, you’re bound to be tested. Australia will be no different. They are just another opposition, like how we’ve treated all the opposition. It doesn’t make a difference to us. It’s a semi-final.”

Rankin, Wright record take game away from Worcestershire

Moeen Ali suffered the indignity of becoming the first bowler hit for six by Boyd Rankin in first-class cricket as Warwickshire built a strong position on the third day against Worcestershire at EdgbastonEngland’s spinner was not spared as the visitors ran into a riotous record unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 114 by Rankin and Chris Wright, which delighted the Edgbaston faithful and left the visitors facing a tall victory target of 437.Rankin struck an unbeaten 56, his maiden half-century, from 100 balls and celebrated that first six off Moeen with two more, off Sachitra Senanayake and Alex Kervezee respectively. Wright contributed a classy unbeaten 61 off 97 balls, his eighth first-class half-century, to build on a foundation diligently laid by captain Varun Chopra’s 18th first-class century. It left Worcestershire a daunting target of 437 to win and they closed on 88 for 2 having suffered a big blow just before the close. Moeen moved to a classy 33, including four exquisite off-side fours in one Rikki Clarke over, but then edged left-armer Keith Barker to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.Warwickshire resumed in the morning on 105 for 2 and were pegged back by Joe Leach who quickly added two wickets to his six in the first innings as three wickets fell for 19 runs in 32 balls. Leach had Laurie Evans caught at second slip and Ambrose taken at leg slip before Clarke fired a return catch to Charlie Morris.Chopra made 107 playing with great care, and Barker added 66 but when Jeetan Patel was stumped off Senanayake just after lunch, Warwickshire were 207 for 8, effectively 207 for 9 with Sam Hain unable to bat due to a shoulder injury. But as the visitors’ three specialist seamers tired, Wright and Rankin took full advantage to set a new county ninth-wicket record partnership against Worcestershire, surpassing the 98 by Piran Holloway and Allan Donald at Edgbaston in 1992.After the declaration at tea, Worcestershire went into bat needing 437 in a day and 32 overs and started well as Daryl Mitchell and Richard Oliver added 52 in 13. Patel struck with his fifth ball when Oliver, having batted well for 33 from 42 balls rather gave it away with a leading-edge to mid-off. Moeen got off the mark with a straight six off Patel but perished in the lengthening shadows late on and Worcestershire will need skipper Mitchell , who closed on 16 not out, to continue his vigil deep into the last day.”I was pleased with the century,” Chopra said. “I felt quite good yesterday when the ball was doing a bit. There was a bit of playing and missing along the way but it was the kind of wicket when you might always get one with your name on it so you just had to try to stick in there and put away the bad ball when it came along.”I was pleased to get the hundred but then, having done all the hard work, got out when the wicket started to get flat which was a bit annoying. Wrighty and Boydy put on our first hundred partnership of the year and you would have had pretty long odds on it coming from the two guys who are normally our numbers 10 and 11. But they both played really well.”Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes added: “That nith wicket stand was a killer for us because we had a real chance of chasing a lot lower score than we were expecting. We nearly did what we said last night which was to try and bowl them out today for another 100-120 runs. But they batted well and also our bowlers were just running out of steam and the reason they ran out of steam was we only batted for 42 overs and did not give them enough time to rest up and recharge the batteries ready for the next onslaught.”I can’t knock the bowlers, they’ve tried really hard and we just desperately need to bat well again because it’s a big score. We did well tonight but it was a big blow losing Moeen just before the end. That hurt us because he is a key player and he himself wanted some time at the crease. He got a little bit of that but he would have loved to be there overnight for a big innings tomorrow. It is a good test now for the rest of our batsmen.”

LADO DIFERENTE, PROBLEMA IGUAL

Jack Taylor lit up an otherwise cheerless day with his maiden first-class century to give Gloucestershire the upper hand over Derbyshire. Taylor made 120 from 139 balls to take Gloucestershire to 329 before Derbyshire closed day two 252 behind, with rain prevented any play after tea.Mark Footitt took three of the four Gloucestershire wickets to fall to finish with 4 for 60 while Tom Taylor ended his namesake’s excellent innings to record figures of 4 for 89.Michael Klinger had started the day seven short of a century but he fell to the sixth ball of the morning when he edged Footitt into the gloves of Harvey Hosein. Craig Miles went in his next over, also caught behind as he tried to take his bat away from another rapid delivery to leave Gloucestershire on 255 for 8 but Taylor again counter-attacked well, driving Tony Palladino over the top to pass his previous highest score of 63 and then pulling the seamer for six. After a brief interruption for bad light, Taylor and David Payne continued to frustrate Derbyshire with Taylor launching Tillakaratne Dilshan for six before the new ball was taken. Taylor reached his hundred off 122 balls before another short stoppage for rain and the ninth wicket pair took their stand to 74 before Taylor sliced a drive to third man.”It was important we got more than 300 and after Klinger was out it needed a mature innings,” Gloucestershire captain Geraint Jones said. “Jack batted in a mature way with controlled aggression. Credit to David Payne too for sticking with him and also credit to the bowlers for bowling tightly throughout.”Footitt had Liam Norwell caught behind in the next over following Taylor’s departure without scoring and batting became increasingly difficult when Derbyshire replied in gloomy conditions. Even with the floodlights on, the umpires took the players off for a third time before Ben Slater was taken low down at second slip off Norwell for 17.Chesney Hughes was missed by Jones at first slip on 5 but added only four before he edged a defensive push at Benny Howell and although Dilshan started by pulling Norwell for six; Godleman went 48 minutes without scoring a run. Both were grateful to get to tea but the rain set in during the interval and it was no surprise when play was abandoned shortly before 5pm leaving Godleman to reflect on a mixed day for Derbyshire.”We started very well and Footy bowled an excellent spell but I think in that situation you have to give credit to Jack Taylor, he chanced his arm very well and played some good cricket shots. But I would have liked us to execute our plans a little bit better.”

Teams in flux square up for decider

With the series tied 1-1 and both Pakistan and Sri Lanka in flux, tipping a winner for the third Test and the series is foolish

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando and Umar Farooq02-Jul-2015Match factsJuly 3 -7, 2015
Start time 1000 local (0430 GMT)1:51

Fernando: Kandy usually has more hours of rain than play

Big PictureWith the series tied, it’s tempting to invoke the idea of momentum. Pakistan have more experience, you might say, but Sri Lanka are more confident following the win at the P Sara Oval. But as unhelpful a gauge as momentum is normally, it’s even less useful for matches between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Already in this series, each team has proved capable of stirring highs and stinking lows. To add to this uncertainty: both teams are in flux. Pakistan will be forced to make at least two changes, and Sri Lanka, one. Tipping a winner is foolish. Better to defer to that classic captain’s press conference line: “Whoever scores more runs and takes more wickets will win.”But if you must begin to hypothesise on who will be better at what, it becomes apparent that certain laws of the cricket universe have been thrown into contention. Pakistan’s batting – no joke – seems to be more solid than the opposition’s. With Kumar Sangakkara unavailable, Angelo Mathews is the only man in Sri Lanka’s top seven with more than 20 Tests’ experience. Pakistan have two recent centurions in addition to Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq.Just as surprisingly, Sri Lanka’s bowling might be the team’s stronger suit. Rangana Herath has only two wickets in two Tests, but while he holds the line at one end, Sri Lanka have bowlers who will hunt at the other. Tharindu Kaushal is a member of that critically endangered species: an unorthodox offspin bowler with a doosra, yet he’s fearless in attack. Dhammika Prasad has suddenly become a reliable seam bowler, capable of delivering sustained probing spells.Pakistan have changes to make to their attack, but will be encouraged by the enduring effectiveness of Yasir Shah in this series. At present, Sri Lanka don’t seem to know what to do with him. The latest theory was that they could hit him off his length, but even when he is struck for a boundary, Yasir’s accuracy and bite seems not to waver. His battle with a young top order promises to be as intriguing in Pallekele as it was in Galle and Colombo.Form guide(last five matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightDinesh Chandimal equalled a Sri Lanka record when he claimed six dismissals behind the stumps in the second innings at the P Sara Oval, but that’s not to say his keeping was flawless. There was the chance he wrongly did not attempt, reprieving eventual centurion Azhar Ali early in his innings, and another less damaging indiscretion towards the end of that innings. While other young batsmen have only their batting to worry about, Chandimal is tasked with developing in two disciplines. He’s also perhaps the most naturally talented of Sri Lanka’s top seven, but he has not hit a fifty in the series so far, and that will irk him.Younis Khan’s tour of Sri Lanka hasn’t been as successful as past trips so far, with scores of 47, 6 and 40 from his three innings. In the second Test, he seemed genuinely troubled by the extra bounce and pace, and fell after extended hesitant periods. Pakistan have missed the Younis-Misbah partnership that has been the bedrock of so many of their good Test totals. After the second Test, Misbah said major contributions from himself and Younis were now overdue.Team newsUpul Tharanga was drafted into the squad as replacement for Kumar Sangakkara, and despite other batsmen having been in the squad all along, it appears as if Tharanga will move straight into the No. 3 position. Kithuruwan Vithanage’s middle order spot is also under threat from Kusal Perera. The side strain Dushmantha Chameera sustained in Colombo has ruled him out of this match. Suranga Lakmal will likely replace him. If Sri Lanka opt for three seamers, as Lahiru Thirimanne said they were likely to do, Rangana Herath may have to sit out on form leaving Tharindu Kaushal as the sole spinner. Nuwan Pradeep would then step in as the third seamer.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Kaushal Silva, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Upul Tharanga, 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 6 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 7 Kusal Perera, 8 Dhammika Prasad, 9 Tharindu Kaushal, 10 Rangana Herath/ Nuwan Pradeep, 11 Suranga LakmalPakistan suffered a setback with an injury to their in-form bowler Wahab Riaz in the last game and they will miss experienced opener Mohammad Hafeez for the Test, after the ICC set a deadline of July 6 for the official retest of his bowling action. Pakistan have brought in Rahat Ali in place of Wahab while Shan Masood, another opener who is already with the team, could replace Hafeez in the playing XI.Pakistan (likely): 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Shan Masood, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Zulfiqar Babar, 10 Imran Khan/Rahat Ali, 11 Junaid KhanPitch and conditionsIt has rained all week in Kandy, and matches and June matches at Pallekele are ripe for rain interruptions. In three Tests at the venue, there is yet to be a result here, largely because of the weather. The pitch is expected to be helpful for seamers on day one, so if there is cloud cover overhead as well, the captain winning the toss may opt to bowl.Stats and trivia Of the batsmen in each squad, only Azhar Ali has hit a century at Pallekele. He struck a second-innings 136 in the most recent Test at the venue, in 2012. Upul Tharanga had top-scored in his most recent Test, with 92 and 45 against Pakistan in August last year. He was not named in the squad for the subsequent Test series. Yasir Shah is by a distance the highest wicket taker in the series, with 17 scalps at an average of 18. This match will be Sri Lanka’s first without both Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara since July 2002.Quotes”It’s good for seamers here, but spinners have also done well. Tharindu Kaushal bowled really well in the last match. It’s likely that we will play three seamers and a spinner in this match.”
“It’s not difficult to come back after a loss, but somehow it’s a reminder and an alert that we are not doing everything right.”

> CONFIRA A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO DO BRASILEIRÃO
