Murtagh six presses Middlesex bid

Middlesex will ask Tim Murtagh for more of the same after their Ireland international quick bowler took five wickets in an innings for the third time this season to create a platform upon which their batsmen have built a position to dictate terms on the final day.Nottinghamshire avoided the follow on but Murtagh’s 6 for 93 enabled Middlesex to secure a first-innings lead of 113 to which they added enough runs to rule a home victory out of the potential outcomes. On a day of ebbs and flows, that unlikely turn of events did at one stage look a possibility as Peter Siddle at last showed something of his international quality and Andre Adams claimed the potentially crucial wicket of Chris Rogers for rather fewer than his first-innings 180.But a partnership of measured resolve late in the day from John Simpson and Paul Stirling has stretched Middlesex’s advantage and Rogers must now decide how much time is enough time for Murtagh, Steven Finn and Toby Roland-Jones, perhaps with help from Ravi Patel, to take 10 wickets. To emerge with even a draw would be an achievement for Nottinghamshire, given that they conceded 505 in the first innings. They at least showed some character in making sure Middlesex would need to bat a second time.At 164 for 4 on the second afternoon, that had seemed a distant prospect and still looked unlikely when Samit Patel, who had played beautifully in scoring 75 by Sunday’s close, top-edged an early attempt at a hook, leaving Nottinghamshire still 244 runs behind with half their wickets gone. The day was cool and the light so gloomy that the floodlights were on throughout, but Chris Read and Riki Wessels applied themselves diligently and adding 72 runs in the next hour, remaining in charge through a disappointing new ball spell from Finn to be only 23 runs shy of their target when the impressive Murtagh hit Read’s middle stump.Siddle fell to Murtagh’s next delivery and Wessels, who had played well for his 71, was taken superbly at slip by a diving Dawid Malan. But Andre Adams, with his customary all-or-nothing view of how to tackle a crisis, heaved his first ball over long-on for six and hit the next high over midwicket and, with Luke Fletcher firing 40 off 42 balls, Nottinghamshire avoided being asked to bat again. Murtagh’s half-dozen took his tally for the season to 30 wickets.”I’ve felt in good rhythm all season,” Murtagh said afterwards. “I’ve not been playing Twenty20 so it has been a little bit stop-start where I like to bowl a lot of overs because I feel I get better the more I bowl.”It was nice to get some wickets to put us in a good position. We stuck to our guns on a pretty good wicket and got our rewards in the end. And there was a bit more variable bounce for their bowlers in those last two sessions, which was encouraging for us going into the last day. If there is some up and down movement it will make our job easier.”They did well enough to get themselves back into the game, which made the partnership at the end very important going into tomorrow, although we will want to add a few more.”Malan and Rogers added 46 in quick time, but another shift in the flow of the contest saw Malan bowled shouldering arms to Harry Gurney and Rogers edging behind as Adams found lift and late movement. Then Siddle produced his best spell to dismiss Eoin Morgan and Neil Dexter, before Harry Gurney, in his follow-through, deflected a Simpson drive to run out Joe Denly at the non-striker’s end.Now it was for Simpson and Stirling to show some resolve, which they needed in the circumstances with the wicket beginning to show signs of wear. In a way their contribution was as important as the much more substantial scores supplied by Rogers and Morgan in the first innings, keeping Middlesex with their hand on the controls.

Narine steals show for Guyana in win

Guyana Amazon Warriors laid forth their intentions to get back to the Caribbean Premier League final with a reasonably cool two-wicket win over Antigua Hawksbills

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
The Guyana Amazon Warriors laid forth their intentions to get back to the Caribbean Premier League final with a two-wicket win over Antigua Hawksbills on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Caribbean Premier League 2014 in Grenada. The slim final margin belied the true disparity between the sides after Sunil Narine’s near flawless bowling spell meant last year’s CPL runners-up faced a modest target of 137. Guyana lost three wickets for two runs in six balls late in the chase but eventually eased across the line with three balls to spare.Guyana captain Denesh Ramdin was named Man of the Match for his 51 off 36 balls, but Narine was arguably the standout performer on the day. He returned sensational figures of 4-1-3-0 to tie a record for the fewest runs conceded in a four-over T20 spell. The mark is shared by two others including Shoaib Malik for Barbados Tridents in CPL 2013, also made against Antigua.Ramdin won the toss and put Antigua in to bat. Australian import Ben Dunk got the side off to an impressive start, targeting the spin of Mohammed Hafeez for two fours and a six in the fourth over to move to 33 for 0. At that stage, Dunk was on 32 and his partner Shacaya Thomas was anchored on 1. In what would be a recurring theme on the day, Narine appeared in the following over and choked off the runs.Denesh Ramdin was named Man of the Match for his 51 off 36 balls•LatinContent/Getty Images

Dunk tried to attack Ronsford Beaton in the sixth over and paid for it by chipping a top edge to Hafeez at midwicket for 38. Thomas’ struggles against spin ended for 20 in the 14th over after a top-edged sweep against Veerasammy Permaul was taken by Hafeez at fine leg. Narine increased the pressure, conceding one run in the 15th, and even though the score was a healthy 103 for 2, with five overs remaining, the desperation for runs was manifested in the first of three run-outs. Off the first ball of the 16th, Danza Hyatt took off prematurely from the non-striker’s end only to see Krishmar Santokie field off his own bowling and hit the stumps. In the next over, Marlon Samuels chose to run for a tight single past silly point but Ramdin scurried from behind the stumps and fired another direct hit at the bowler’s end. Following David Hussey’s dismissal at the hands of Jimmy Neesham for 10 in the 18th, Devon Thomas attempted to resuscitate the Antigua innings with a big six over long-on in the 19th but was fortunate to survive two balls later when he miscued the same shot and Martin Guptill wound up parrying the ball over the rope for four.Sheldon Cottrell tried to finish with a flourish for Antigua by flicking over midwicket for a boundary to start the 20th but a wild charge on the third ball resulted in a run-out after some indecision on whether or not to steal a bye. Neesham followed that with the wickets of Carlos Brathwaite and Justin Athanaze off the next two deliveries and a superb final pver kept the score to 136 for 8.Guyana’s chase got off to a rocky start in the first two overs with the loss of their openers. Lendl Simmons was bowled by a Cottrell inswinger for a duck and was followed by Guptill in the next over. The experience of Hafeez and Ramdin came through with a 59-run third-wicket stand before Hafeez fell off the final ball of the 10th, trying to slog the off spin of Samuels out of the ground only to sky a chance over the pitch that was claimed by the keeper.Ramdin accelerated towards his fifty by stroking four boundaries off the next three overs to bring the equation down closer to a run a ball. Neesham holed out to long-on for 11 to give Cottrell his second but Guyana were still in control needing 28 off the last five overs with six wickets in hand. Ramdin brought up his half-century off 34 balls with a single to start the 16th before Guyana stumbled with victory in sight.Christopher Barnwell checked a cut shot and spooned a simple catch to Hyatt at point for Ben Laughlin’s first wicket. Laughlin and Hyatt teamed up again four balls later to remove Navin Stewart. Antigua would have started to believe the match might just be theirs when Ramdin was bowled by Brathwaite off the first ball of the 17th over, leaving the tail to score 25 off 23 deliveries.Permaul got just enough of a Laughlin slower ball in the 18th to clear the rope at long-on for six, after which a four squirted through point deflated Antigua. Permaul fell with seven balls remaining, hooking Cottrell to long-leg, but the dismissal came after he had done damage. After his exploits with the ball earlier in the day, Narine fittingly clinched the win with a thumping drive back down the ground for a four in the 20th.

Cook, Ballance put England well ahead

Alastair Cook ended his run of poor form with an innings of 95, while Gary Ballance scored his third century of the summer to drive England into a strong position

The Report by George Binoy27-Jul-2014

Alastair Cook took a step towards quelling some of the criticism he has been bombarded with recently by making his highest score since his last Test hundred in May 2013. He laid a foundation for England’s large first-innings score during a 158-run association with Gary Ballance, who, unlike his captain, is enjoying a productive summer and scored his third hundred to go with two half-centuries in only six Tests. Cook now needs his tactical decisions to pay off to earn breathing space on the captaincy front.Cook had the sort of fortune an under-pressure captain needs when chasing a 0-1 deficit in the series. England’s first break came before play began when India’s Man of the Match at Lord’s, Ishant Sharma, was ruled out with an ankle injury. Cook then won the toss on a pitch that left MS Dhoni undecided about whether to bat or bowl had he called correctly, but the hard and grassy surface offered limited swing and seam movement to India’s quicks. Both those pieces of luck would have amounted to naught, however, had Ravindra Jadeja held a straightforward chance. Cook was on 15 at the time and the debutant Pankaj Singh, Ishant’s replacement, missed out on a maiden Test wicket. The first delivery of the match was perfect from Bhuvneshwar. He pitched on a good length around off, drew the batsman forward, wobbled the ball a bit and found the edge. Cook looked behind to see the chance fall short of second slip, an immediate sign it was going to be his day.Sam Robson’s footwork was more assured at the start, his judgement astute as he left deliveries that swung away and seamed into him. As his confidence grew, Robson pressed forward and drove on the up to the cover boundary, a shot he repeated twice more in his innings.Unlike at Lord’s, Cook stood outside his crease in this innings to counter Bhuvneshwar’s swing. It worked, and when he was beaten the ball missed the edge. The plan was trickier to execute against the taller Pankaj, though. He bent a few deliveries back into Cook, before getting one to straighten off a good length. Pankaj had taken 300 first-class wickets before getting a Test debut, and he could have had a wicket in his third over had Jadeja been competent at third slip. It was the fifth catch India had put down in the cordon this series.India bowled no short deliveries or bouncers in the first hour. England’s openers had been given no opportunities to cut or pull, though Cook had been offered a few balls on his pads to clip through square. With Cook settling in, however, Dhoni took out his gully, and soon watched an edge off Shami fly at catchable height to the third-man boundary.Robson fell against the run of play. He had been moving forward smoothly until he stayed in his crease and prodded away at Shami’s outswinger. This time Jadeja held the catch at third slip, ending the partnership on 55, England’s first 50-plus opening in ten innings.Cook brought up his half-century soon after lunch, pulling a short delivery from Shami for two. There was no release of emotion as he received a standing ovation. Instead, he pulled the next short one for four.India bowled too straight or too wide at Ballance, who scored his first ten runs between backward square and midwicket and then began hitting the ball through point whenever he had width, which was often. Cook and Ballance picked on the shorter lengths from India’s quicks, and while Jadeja’s left-arm spin offered India economy, it did not do much else apart from ensuring an outstanding over rate.India had another opportunity to dismiss Cook, but Shami missed a direct hit from mid-on, and when the batsman scored his 70th run he moved past David Gower to take third spot among England’s leading run-scorers.While Cook scored at a careful pace, Ballance gave England an infusion of energy in the last half hour before tea. He was adept at putting away anything wide, and peppered the arc between third man and cover with a series of cuts and drives to help England score 108 in the second session.India’s seamers frequently bowled poor lines and lengths – too straight and too short. Ballance fed off deliveries on his hips, while Cook moved into the nineties with a controlled pull off a half-tracker from Shami. All day Jadeja had bowled over the wicket to the left-hand batsmen with a packed leg-side, trying to stifle them, but Ballance was able to step out and surgically place a drive through midwicket.Cook was also dismissed against the run of play. On 95, he went back to pull a delivery from Jadeja that was sliding down leg and Dhoni caught the bottom edge. The Ageas Bowl had been preparing to celebrate Cook’s hundred but the spectators rose in unison to applaud the England captain.India then made an unsuccessful appeal against Ian Bell as soon as the new ball was taken, when Pankaj squared the batsman up and struck the pad with a delivery that behaved like a fast legcutter. Replays indicated Pankaj had been unlucky; Bell had not yet scored.Ballance had no such worries. He carved a length ball from Bhuvneshwar over point to enter the nineties, and then rode the bounce to cut Shami to the third-man boundary to bring up a hundred. With England picking allrounders Chris Jordan and Chris Woakes, and Stuart Broad to bat at No. 10, India were facing another long day in the field.

Estreia no Brasileirão

World Cup audition for South Africa reserves

With the series won, South Africa have opted to rest Hashim Amla and might test their entire bench in the final ODI

Big PictureThere are times when a couple of days can make a difference but the ODI series between Zimbabwe and South Africa is an example of how breaks can have no effect. The first and second matches were near carbon-copies of each other, with the only real difference being the margin of Zimbabwe’s defeat. Although their bowling improved, particularly at the death, they made the same mistakes with the bat. Soft dismissals and lapses in concentration led to their unravelling and have left Sean Williams stuck with the tail, twice. Temperament is the missing ingredient but whether that can be found in such a short space of time remains to be seen.South Africa do not have many areas to tweak despite being bowled out by Zimbabwe’s hard-working but limited attack. Hashim Amla earns himself a rest, but the likes of AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and David Miller may want to improve on their returns but for the rest, the final match will simply be more of the same: an opportunity to get match time and with a World Cup looming. There is depth in bowling resources, but with the return of the first-choice trio of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander for the upcoming tri-series, competition for a place in the final XI is still high. The people to whom this final match might mean most to are the Bulawayo fans. This will be their last sighting of international cricket for at least another 12 months and as the crowds have shown, it is something they treasure watching.Form guide (last five completed games, most recent first)
Zimbabwe LLLLW
South Africa WWWLWIn the spotlightZimbabwe’s top order slumped to 34 for 3 and 45 for 4 in the first two matches and will want to avoid another repeat. They have already changed their opening pair and might shuffle it again with Hamilton Masakadza dropping to No.3 and Sikandar Raza fronting up first. Brendan Taylor will also be under pressure after only 20 runs from two outings. The strength of South Africa’s top order did not allow David Miller to be a factor in the opening match. Miller had similar issues in Sri Lanka and is realising the better the top four get the less time he may have at the crease. He will have to make an impact in short and sharp bursts while finishing an innings. If Miller gets it right, South Africa could mount totals too large for Zimbabwe to scale.Team newsZimbabwe are still struggling to find a bowling combination that works and may want to look to one of the Test seamers, if the management feels they have had enough downtime. Tinashe Panyangara or Tendai Chatara could come in for Luke Jongwe or Neville Madziva. They don’t have too many options in the batting department besides Timycen Maruma and may have to opt for the same top-order and hope they can produce better results. Some turn will be on offer as well but so are runs with proper application. The weather in Bulawayo has warmed up significantly from the first match and is expected to reach 27 degrees on Thursday.Stats and trivia This is the sixth three-match ODI series between South Africa and Zimbabwe. South Africa have whitewashed Zimbabwe in all of the previous five. Brendan Taylor is the only Zimbabwe batsman among the top 50 in the ODI rankings. He is 24th.Quotes”We have to improve on our batting. This is the last chance in the series for all departments to play well. Giving early wickets away is criminal, especially on a wicket that is batting friendly. We will have to re-strategise.””We will definitely make a few changes.
