Buzz in Bengal ahead of spicy encounter

Two teams who had an ill-tempered league match involving a Mankading controversy meet again in the quarterfinals

Ghosh’s home away from home

The match is also a homecoming of sorts for Railways batsman Arindam Ghosh, who until 2012, was part of the Bengal Ranji squad. Since his switch to Railways, Ghosh has made 602 runs in eight games, including an unbeaten double hundred and a knock of 188.
Bengal coach Ashok Malhotra wished the batsman luck, saying Bengal had prepared well for him. “Good luck to Arindam,” Malhotra said. “Probably Bengal’s loss is Railways’ gain. We have a gameplan for him. We’ll play good cricket, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Even as life progresses at its own pace in Kolkata, it’s almost as if the Eden Gardens exists in its own bubble. There is a heightened sense of anticipation around Bengal’s quarterfinal match against Railways.Bengal are still three wins away from their third Ranji Trophy title but their journey is already attracting a buzz – ten former captains signed a bat to support the team, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Jagmohan Dalmiya spoke about the rewards awaiting the team every time they cross another hurdle to the final, and the CAB has been exhorting cricket supporters to show up in large numbers and support the team.By some quirk of fate, Bengal find themselves in a tussle with Railways, a team with which they had an acrimonious encounter in the league stages, an ill-tempered draw fuelled by a Mankading incident that had heated exchanges between the Bengal coach Ashok Malhotra and Railways captain Murali Kartik. On the eve of the quarterfinal, however, Malhotra and Abhay Sharma, the Railways coach, were keen to stress that the incident was now in the past.”This is a new game,” Malhotra said. “That was too small an incident and we are moving forward.” Sharma said: “The league phase is history and we don’t want to talk about history, we have to look forward, and will concentrate on the next five days to play good cricket.”Malhotra also said he wasn’t too perturbed by the draw that had pitted two teams from the same group against each other: “When you’re playing Ranji Trophy, there is no happy, unhappy. You have to beat three top teams, so it doesn’t matter.”Bengal and Railways have had good runs since that game in Delhi. Bengal found a late surge, powered by the form of their captain Laxmi Shukla, who dug them out from 50 for 4 against Uttar Pradesh to an eight-wicket win. In the final round, a virtual knock-out against Tamil Nadu, Saurasish Lahiri’s seven-for ensured Bengal’s progression. Malhotra said the mood in the Bengal camp was one of quiet confidence, helped by the return of players like Wriddhiman Saha and Arindam Das (who had suffered an injury earlier in the season).”We are just three steps away, it’s a new game now, the knock-out stage,” Malhotra said. “We are used to the pressure. We are peaking at the right team and the team is also better with the return of a few players. We are a very happy team. Every game we have bounced back. 40 for 5, 80 for 5, even against Tamil Nadu. I am keeping my fingers crossed we can do the same in the games ahead.”While Bengal needed a last-minute scramble to take their place in the quarterfinal, Railways had ensured their spot even before the final round with a win against Services that was built on a smart declaration. For Sharma, the performance of the team this season was as much an endorsement of a strong work ethic as it was of planning, which had helped them overcome the fact that they didn’t have a home advantage unlike other teams in the league.”We have a different culture of players, they speak different languages, but once you visit our dressing room, you’ll find that everybody talks and everybody walks in the same direction, which is a very healthy sign for the team,” Sharma said. “And that is why Railways have won in the past decade. We have played eight games this season and we didn’t play a single home game.”Though the match is being played at Eden Gardens, the pitch can’t be prepared for Bengal’s strengths as it is being monitored by the BCCI. Both teams felt the track at the Eden Gardens was a good one, given how reliant they are on their seam attacks. The Bengal pace trio of Ashok Dinda, Sourav Sarkar and Shib Paul have taken 53 wickets among them this season, while the Railways have been led by pacer Anureet Singh (35 wickets in seven matches at an average of 17.51), Ranjitkumar Mali (23 wickets in five games at 15.3) and Krishnakant Upadhyay (19 wickets in seven games at 33.15).According to Malhotra, the pitch didn’t favour either team, while Sharma said he expected the track to support seamers on the first couple of days and then help the spinner. Sharma was also confident that his young attack could thrive in the conditions.”As far as comparing the attacks is concerned, it is immaterial. The more important thing is how we bowl on that day,” Sharma said. “It doesn’t matter what team you are with, it matters that you put the ball in the right areas.”

Taylor ton delivers series triumph

It took its time coming, it tested a few nerves, but New Zealand finally sealed their first series win at home in five years, not counting the ones against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. They should have won it three nights ago, they should probably have won it more comfortably tonight after having reduced India to 278 and then reached 54 for 0 in seven overs and 182 for 2 in 33. They will be thankful that they had their two most consistent batsmen – Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson – in the middle when Ravindra Jadeja started to turn the ball square after he himself gave India a fighting total with 62 off 54, a much more assured innings than the one that tied the previous match to keep India alive.Williamson now has four half-centuries in four matches in this series, and Taylor made up for missing out on one in Auckland by turning this into a big one once he crossed 50. Taylor’s innings was exceptional in its discipline: he didn’t try his favourite slog-sweep, in fact he scored just 10 runs in his midwicket arc. Most of his runs came behind and in front of square on the off side. India couldn’t be accused of showing similar discipline when they batted, but they were also put under pressure by a superbly disciplined start by Kyle Mills and Tim Southee, which led to their repetition of the shot that has been getting them out. Between them Southee and Mills bowled three maidens, took three wickets, and conceded just 78.India surprised everyone by not only getting rid of their stubbornness but going to the other end. Not only did they drop Suresh Raina, which was long overdue, they also left out Shikhar Dhawan for Ambati Rayudu, and decided to bat first after having invited the opposition 20 straight times outside Asia. With no specialist opener in the side, India moved everyone up by one spot, which meant India’s best batsman was now opening. However, the opening spells that Mills and Southee bowled would have frustrated the best of openers. There was nothing to drive or cut, forget getting too straight, and India would have had to take a risk if they were going to score. The first risk was taken to the first short ball bowled, and all Kohli managed was a top edge off Southee. Soon Mills got a similar response from Ajinkya Rahane. In between the two dismissals, Rohit became desperate, somehow hit the first boundary of the innings, enjoyed a drop from Taylor, and India still reached only 28 in 10 overs.More good luck, and some classy Rohit shots, followed, and a 79-run partnership shored India up. However, the luck soon ran out. Rayudu top-edged Hamish Bennett, and in an ironical turn of events Rohit edged Kane Williamson for a catch down the leg side. Of all the bowlers, of all the manners. From 151 for 5, India came back remarkably with two batsmen who applied themselves before taking 100 off the last 10 overs. Say what you will about the strategy, Dhoni proved his batting worth with a third fifty in a row. Jadeja, at the other end, showed Auckland was no fluke, and played the cleanest knock of the three fifties in the Indian innings. It was a good comeback if you look at the way India began: two boundaries and 28 runs in 10 overs. New Zealand hit two fours in the first over, reached 28 in the fourth, and were well on their way to hammer India when Jesse Ryder paid once again for his tendency to stay leg side of the ball in order to create room for his off-side hits. That played-on dismissal was followed by Martin Guptill’s lbw – the first such dismissal of the series – and India now had an opening. The opening began to look wider when Jadeja turned the first ball he bowled across Williamson. He beat the bat three times in the first over. R Ashwin provided good support from the other end. The second 10 overs of New Zealand’s innings were the most crucial period of the match. Both Williamson and Taylor played with utmost caution, scored just the 30 runs, saw the asking rate reach 6.13, but didn’t give the spinners a wicket. You would have expected Dhoni to take one of the spinners off and continue attacking with one, but he completely took the pressure off by removing both Jadeja and Ashwin. Suddenly all the pressure was eased, and Taylor and Williamson – 24 off 37 and 17 off 38 respectively – cashed in. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron and Rayudu all conceded boundaries as 63 runs came in the nine overs before Ashwin was brought back.By that time, you would have thought, the game was over, but Jadeja turned it around with a run-out off his own bowling. Another nervous period followed as Brendon McCullum, searching for form, on a hat-trick of ducks, fumbled around a little and the asking rate went past six again. Taylor, though, stood firm at the other end, and guided his captain through hitting timely fours to keep the requirement within reach. The next call of duty was to play out the two remaining overs of Jadeja. That done, the two finished their highest-successful chase against India in style, turning what had looked nervous into a comfortable win with 11 balls to spare.

Dhoni lauds bowlers' will

MS Dhoni heaped praise on his bowlers, saying that they had tried everything they could during the Test, and that only exceptional batting from New Zealand made the difference in the end

‘Fantastic the way our bowlers bowled’ – Dhoni

MS Dhoni- “You have to appreciate that at times, the opposition can also bat well.”•Getty Images

Twice in four Tests now, Inda have failed to convert a strong position into victory. At the Wanderers, they even came close to losing after setting South Africa a target of 458. At Basin Reserve, they had New Zealand five down and still needing 152 to make the visitors bat again, but were unable to dislodge triple-centurion Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling, who went on to build a match-saving 352-run partnership.MS Dhoni felt India had tried everything they could, and lauded the efforts of his quicks, emphasizing that the opposition had just been too good.”We bowled for two-and-a-half days. We tried our best in all fielding positions,” Dhoni said. “Right from catching slips to catching covers to deep square leg to deep point and bowling on the pads to bowling outside off. We tried three new balls to get them out. At times it works, at times it does not work. After that, you have to appreciate that at times, the opposition can also bat well. We don’t always have to put pressure on our bowlers and batters saying we batted badly or we bowled badly.”I think as a cricket fan, he (McCullum) batted really well. And he was given good company by Watling and they kept playing. They played a lot of deliveries. Playing close to 500-odd deliveries is itself very tough, forget the amount of runs he has scored. I think it was one of the good innings we were able to see.”McCullum and Watling consumed 926 deliveries between them. India had sent down 136 overs in the second innings in Johannesburg, while they ended up bowling 210 in the second innings in Wellington. Dhoni had appreciated his toiling fast bowlers in South Africa as well, and he was pleased again with the intensity they had shown at the Basin.”I think it was fantastic to see the way our bowlers bowled. Specially the fact that when they took the second and third new ball, still they were willing to put in a lot of effort. You don’t get to see sides playing with three fast bowlers and one spinner and putting the kind of effort that our side did. Overall, we will accept that we were not able to get two batsmen out. They batted really well, we will give credit to them but at the same time, what really needs to be appreciated is the will and the way our fast bowlers tried to get the opposition out on a really flat wicket. As I said, to maintain pressure with 3-1 combination becomes difficult. That was one area where our fast bowlers did really well. They were able to hit consistent line and length throughout. We bowled close to 200-odd overs and still they were able to hit the same spot with good intensity which itself means a lot.”Dhoni said it was difficult to pinpoint why India were falling short after getting ahead in games. “We are trying. It is not like making food where you say, okay, salt is missing, that is why it is not good. Where we are lacking, that is a difficult one to answer. In the last two series, we have not been able to capitalise when we were in similar situation. I think it is good we were in a situation like that and slowly we will be able to capitalise also.”

Mohammad Irfan may require hip surgery

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan may head to Australia for a hip surgery if he fails to show enough progress from his ongoing rehabilitation program

Umar Farooq13-Mar-2014

I will be fine in the next three months – Mohammad Irfan•AFP

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan may head to Australia for a hip surgery if he fails to show enough progress from his ongoing rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, thereby putting his international return in doubt.”There are two fractures in his Ischium bone,” Dr Sohail Saleem, the PCB doctor, told ESPNcricinfo. “Since he has an extraordinary build, his bones are bigger and that is why it is taking him more time to recover. He may be sent to Australia for a surgery if needed but at the moment he needs two to three weeks of rehabilitation before we decide if he still requires a surgery.”Irfan, 31, who last played in the series against South Africa in the UAE in November, had suffered a hairline fracture on his hip during the second T20 of that series and was ruled out for six weeks. He missed the subsequent series against Sri Lanka and underwent an extensive rehabilitation. He returned to competitive cricket during the domestic Twenty20 Cup in Rawalpindi where he aggravated his injury and was immediately sent for a medical assessment.”We are following his case on a daily basis and we have to get him ready for international cricket,” Saleem said. “We are assessing his progress and his reports will also be sent to Australia for a second opinion so I can’t give a precise time but he will be fine and will be playing international cricket again.”Irfan wasn’t picked for the recently concluded Asia Cup and the upcoming World T20 in Bangladesh. Pakistan’s next international assignment will be in UAE against Australia in October. Irfan said he was determined to make a comeback to the national side.”My passion for the game is still high but these fitness issues are the hurdles,” Irfan told ESPNcricinfo. “I knew with my height I will struggle but I have improved immensely since my debut in 2010. I can’t say much about my medical condition but as the doctors suggested I will be fine in the next three months.”Irfan’s fitness has been a talking point since he made his debut in 2010 and he played his longest international streak in the UAE. He bowled 65.5 overs in two Tests against South Africa and 13 overs in a game against UAE. In the last four years, he has played four Tests, 27 one-day internationals and seven T20s.
