Liverpool and Man City eye up Saka move

Liverpool and Manchester City are both reportedly monitoring the progress of exciting Arsenal and England youngster Bukayo Saka.

The Lowdown: Saka shines for Arsenal

The Gunners may not have enjoyed their most successful period in recent years but the emergence of Saka has been an undoubted positive in north London.

The 20-year-old has already matured into one of Arsenal’s most important players, scoring 18 goals and registering 25 assists in 114 appearances to date.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Saka in the past but he ended up staying put, and it appears as though their interest hasn’t gone away.

The Latest: Liverpool showing interest

The Reds are expected to make a move for Fabio Carvalho this summer after the near miss in January, reports Sky Sports, with Jurgen Klopp even confirming as much, but it seems he isn’t the only young talent on the agenda.

According to ESPN senior reporter Mark Ogden, Premier League title rivals Liverpool and City are both ‘watching’ the England international’s progress and ‘could make a move’ if Arsenal miss out on Champions League football.

Saka’s current Gunners deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024, however, so a huge bid would likely be needed to prise him away.

The Verdict: Fantastic signing

Saka is a wonderful young player who looks tailor-made to thrive in Jurgen Klopp’s system at Liverpool, such is his speed, creativity and versatility, so a summer move for him could feel significant.

He possesses great natural ability and aforementioned end product out wide – he has been hailed as both ‘fantastic’ and a ‘revelation’ by Arsenal legend Ray Parlour – but also works hard for the team, averaging 0.9 tackles per game in the Premier League this season.

On top of that, he has played in a remarkable seven different positions for the Gunners, which means Klopp could utilise him in various ways across his front three or even in midfield.

Saka’s age also means he would come in as a long-term addition, potentially being seen as the man who could eventually be Mohamed Salah’s replacement.

There are very few, if any, negatives to Liverpool signing him.

Khawaja flying high after Australia-A call-up

If all goes well for Usman Khawaja, he could be on a plane to England in July to face the country of his birth in a Test series. What’s more he could fly the plane himself

If all goes well for Usman Khawaja, he could be on a plane to England in July to face the country of his birth in a Test series. What’s more he could the plane himself. At 23, Khawaja is a qualified pilot, a batsman of rare class and he could soon be the first Pakistani-born player to represent Australia. But first things first: Khawaja has been chosen for Australia A’s series against Sri Lanka A in Brisbane in June. The selection was no surprise, for Khawaja posted three Sheffield Shield centuries and averaged 63.45 for New South Wales last summer. But the timing, as with so many of Khawaja’s strokes, has been exquisite. The Australian selectors have delayed naming the squad for the two Tests against Pakistan until they see how the A-team performs and thanks to Phillip Hughes’ busted shoulder there is a backup batting spot available. Khawaja’s stiffest competition is likely to come from the Australia A captain George Bailey and the No. 3 Michael Klinger.Khawaja’s youth means he is more of a long-term prospect than Klinger, who will be 30 by the first Test, and his first-class average of a touch under 50 dwarfs Bailey’s mark of 38. He’s not thinking of Test tours just yet, although the baggy green has been Khawaja’s primary objective ever since he was introduced to the sport by his cricket-mad father.”There is a Test spot but there’s still a few games in the A tournament and I’ve just got to keep scoring runs,” Khawaja told Cricinfo. “Aussie A is really exciting. I used to watch the Aussie A guys on TV back in the day when they were in the one-day series. I’m pretty excited, representing Australia in anything is really, really exciting. It’s another step up – I can’t wait.”When the family moved from Islamabad to Sydney, Khawaja was three. His father Tariq continued to support Pakistan but gradually switched allegiances to Australia as his son moved through the ranks. There have been semi-regular trips back to Pakistan, but Khawaja never considered playing for the country of his birth.”Even if they [Pakistan] came calling, there was never a chance of me going there anyway,” he said. “Ever since I was young I’ve been loyal to Australia and all I’ve ever wanted to do is represent Australia and get that baggy green. The thought never even crossed my mind. Australia feels like home, so I don’t think it would be right.”He reckons his dad was “pretty stoked” to hear of the A-team call-up, although Khawaja has shown such poise since making his state debut two years ago that it was only a matter of time. His cricketing success means that his second passion, aviation, has been put aside and he hasn’t taken to the cockpit for 18 months.”Piloting was the thing I was doing, pretty much as a fall back plan for cricket,” he said. “I love cricket to death, and all I ever wanted to do was play cricket. When you’re about 18 and nothing’s certain, I didn’t have any contract and had just made the NSW U-19s team, it was all uncertain. I just felt like I had to do a degree, get it under my belt and I didn’t have to worry about that part of my life.”There’s nothing like a great landing – it’s a great feeling. But I don’t think there’s anything in the world like scoring a hundred or winning a big title for your team. Cricket has always taken that mantle.”Perhaps having not piloted for a while he’d better not fly that plane to London after all. But if he performs against Sri Lanka A, he might just earn a passenger’s ticket.

Northamptonshire earn hard-fought victory

Northamptonshire moved up to third place in Division Two of the County Championship with a nine-wicket victory over Middlesex on the final day at Lord’s.

07-Jun-2010
ScorecardNorthamptonshire moved up to third place in Division Two of the County Championship with a nine-wicket victory over Middlesex on the final day at Lord’s.After the home side were bowled out for 285 in their second innings, Northamptonshire scored the 52 runs they needed to win with more than 12 overs to spare. Andrew Hall, the Northamptonshire captain, took bowling figures of 4 for 44 and Lee Daggett 3 for 49, while Nicky Boje claimed the key wicket when he had Owais Shah well caught by Daggett at long-off for 77.Middlesex had resumed at 48 for one, still needing 186 to make Northamptonshire bat again, and there were no immediate alarms as Sam Robson and Shah took their second-wicket partnership to 75 in 24 overs. Robson was then well caught at second slip by Stephen Peters off Daggett after hitting seven fours in his 42 but Shah found an even more positive partner in Dawid Malan. They had put on 63 in 14 overs, with Malan making 44 runs from 43 balls with nine fours before he lost his middle stump when driving at Hall. Shah was batting well, but when he and Neil Dexter had added another 54 he tried to hoist Boje back over his head and Daggett circled round to take the catch above his head.Shah had scored 77 from 163 balls with 10 fours, but it was not enough for Middlesex who lost their fifth wicket when Dexter tried to sweep Boje from outside off stump and top-edged a catch to wicketkeeper David Murphy.Hall then struck twice in the space of four overs, having Gareth Berg caught at second slip as he tried to drive and trapping Shaun Udal leg before. John Simpson made sure that Northamptonshire would have to bat again by on-driving Hall sweetly for four and went on to make 32 before he got a good ball from Daggett and edged to slip. There was more dogged resistance from Tim Murtagh before he was lbw to Daggett, and from Danny Evans who was left unbeaten on 19 when Pedro Collins slashed at Hall and was caught at slip. There were still 20 overs remaining when Northamptonshire went in again and although Stephen Peters, who made 199 in the first innings, was leg before to Collins in the second over, Rob White soon put the issue beyond doubt by hitting 31 off 23 balls with a six and four fours. Northamptonshire took 23 points to Middlesex’s four.

Wolves favourites to sign Joao Palhinha

Wolves are reportedly the front-runners to sign Sporting CP midfielder Joao Palhinha this summer, with Molineux his ‘most likely destination’.

The Lowdown: Palhinha a key man for Sporting

The 27-year-old has continued to be a key figure for the Portuguese giants, scoring three goals in 17 Primeira Liga starts in the middle of the park this season.

He played a huge part in their league title charge last season, playing fifth major trophy to his collection.

Wolves have been linked with a move for Palhinha in the recent past, as Bruno Lage potentially eyes up a long-term replacement for 35-year-old Joao Moutinho.

The Latest: Wolves favourites to sign midfielder

According to A Bola [via Sport Witness], Wolves are now the most likely team to snap up Palhinha in the summer, with the report stating that they are his ‘most likely destination’.

Wanderers are thought to be ‘very attentive’ regarding a move, with the midfielder winning 12 caps for Portugal to date.

The Verdict: Exciting potential addition

Palhinha looks tailor-made to come in this summer – not only because of his Portuguese roots but also as a replacement for Moutinho, as he has been called a ‘special’ player by Sporting manager Ruben Amorim.

While a little more attack-minded than the current Wolves hero – he has only actually made one appearance as a defensive midfielder this season – he possesses a similar level of quality on possession, enjoying an 86.8% pass completion rate in the Primeira Liga in 2021/22.

At 26, Palhinha is also at an ideal age in terms of being in and around the peak years of his career and that shouldn’t change for a while yet, so it would be no surprise to see him become the next Portuguese great in the Black Country.

Villa: Louie Barry making an impact on loan

Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry is not only a name recognised by those associated with the West Midlands club, but also those outside of it too.

The 18-year-old sensationally scored an equaliser against the then-reigning Premier League champions Liverpool in the FA Cup last season as a 17-year-old, with Villa having to field a side of youngsters amid numerous pandemic cases within the first-team squad.

With the match televised nationally, millions of viewers saw the young forward’s goal, thinking that they may be witnessing the first glimpse of a star in the making. However, Barry has endured a frustrating campaign this term.

The Englishman was sent out on loan to League One outfit Ipswich Town in the summer with hope that forward would find valuable game time in Suffolk; that wasn’t the case.

Former Tractor Boys manager Paul Cook handed the 18-year-old just 286 minutes of football across six appearances, with Barry failing to register a single goal or assist.

The English youngster was subsequently recalled in January and since has dropped down another division, joining League Two Swindon Town for the remainder of the season.

Since joining, the 18-year-old has made four league appearances for the Robins, two from the bench and two starts.

A 45-minute spell in a 1-1 draw to Crawley Town was followed by a brief 20-minute cameo at home to Exeter City, with the visitors winning 2-1.

Barry didn’t leave the bench against Tranmere Rovers, with his side losing 3-0, but was then handed his first start by his loan club, playing 88 minutes in a 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United during which the youngster won a penalty.

The victory was followed by another 3-0 win for Town, with the £3k per-week 18-year-old netting his first goal for the Robins with the clincher against Carlisle on Saturday.

There is no doubt that Barry has talent, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright labelled the forward’s goal against Liverpool as “amazingly clinical” when working as a pundit for the game.

Moreover, the Englishman has impressed for Villa’s youth sides since joining from Barcelona’s youth setup in January 2020, scoring 14 goals in 21 appearances for the U23s and eight goals in eight appearances for the U18s.

After a frustrating first half of the season at Ipswich, it’s now vital that Barry receives game time in order to continue his development, but also takes the opportunities that come his way. The opportunity at Swindon is a good one and must be taken with both hands if the youngster is to catch the eye of Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard.

'They thoroughly deserved their victory' – Strauss

England’s one-day renaissance has hit the buffers. Two defeats against Australia with the series wrapped up were forgiveable, but their five-run loss against Bangladesh should come as a real shock to the system.

England’s one-day renaissance has hit the buffers. Two defeats against Australia with the series wrapped up were forgiveable, but their five-run loss against Bangladesh should come as a real shock to the system. England looked off the pace throughout the match at Bristol and were caught out by a resurgent visiting team that finally found a way to finish off a match. That England got as close as they did, to the point that Ian Bell limped out with a broken foot at No. 11, was down to Jonathan Trott’s determined 94 that almost pulled them over the line. However, the fact that one batsman dominated in the chase is a pattern that has emerged this season for England. Eoin Morgan was the man in the first two wins against Australia, then it was Andrew Strauss at Old Trafford. Two days ago at Trent Bridge Bell made a stylish 84, but still batsmen gave their wickets away. It is a by-product of the way England now express themselves in one-day cricket that batsmen will make mistakes, but to be successful on the subcontinent at next year’s World Cup England can’t rely on a handful of batsmen.”We weren’t at the races today, it’s as simple as that,” Strauss said. “Our bowling was okay but our fielding was poor and our batting, chasing 237, was a particularly poor effort if I’m honest. We’ve only got ourselves to blame but we also have to give credit to Bangladesh for the way they defended that total. They were able to take wickets throughout the innings and keep the pressure on.”We’ve had starts at the top of the order, 20s, 30s but we’ve not had enough big scores,” he added. “Fair play to Belly coming in in the last game and Jonathan Trott in this one coming in and showing the rest of us what we should be doing on a more regular basis. You need two or three of your top six to be doing that regularly if you want to win consistently.”[Paul] Collingwood and [Eoin] Morgan getting out when they did gave Bangladesh a much better chance of winning the game but it was the constant loss of wickets and a lack of major partnerships that cost us the game.”This isn’t a time to panic for England, Andy Flower is not that type of coach and Strauss has been in worse situations as captain, but it is a good time to reassess where the team have reached. Some of the shots from the middle raised questions about the suitability for pressurised roles while the lack of early wickets means England have to keep clawing innings back.”Getting bowled out for 51 in Jamaica was worse than this but it’s not fun to stand up here after losing in this fashion,” he said. “All we can do now is go forward and make amends.”They were going to beat us at some stage and we were just hoping it would be some stage in the future,” he added. “They thoroughly deserved their victory but for us it’s about going away, licking our wounds and making sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes again on Monday.”All of a sudden, that game at Edgbaston has far more riding on it that anyone would have imagined.
