Players' associations frustrated by IPL rebuff

The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) wants the IPL to share its security plans for the upcoming season in India

The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) wants the IPL to share its security plans for the upcoming season in India and hopes that “common sense prevails” on the issue. The IPL’s attitude towards the players associations has been brusque, with Lalit Modi saying the league did not recognise such bodies and would deal directly with the various national boards regarding player security.”We hope common sense prevails and the IPL provides us with access to these [security] plans because if we are unable to assess the event’s security plans, we simply won’t be able to recommend to our players that we believe its safe to play in this year’s IPL,” ACA chief executive Paul Marsh told PTI. “Unfortunately this is turning into a farcical situation. The ACA and our players want the same thing as the IPL wants – a safe and successful event. Despite requests from players’ associations and the players themselves, the IPL is refusing to provide access to its security plans for this year’s event.”Marsh said the ACA was collating information on security from various sources before making a recommendation to the players. “No decision has been made as to whether Australians will play in this year’s IPL. The ACA is currently going through an information gathering process from which recommendations will be made to players as to whether or not we believe it is safe for them,” he said. “This process also involves receiving advice from our government and independent security sources. It also involves assessing the security plans for the event.”The New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association also shared the ACA’s concerns. Its chief, Heath Mills, said they were frustrated by the lack of response from the IPL. “We have already approached the IPL through FICA and Tim May and the players have written to their franchises,” he said. “Unfortunately, the IPL will not engage us or work with us on the issue which is frustrating for us and the players.”Players are coming to us for advice. However we cannot give them any quality advice at the moment about participating in the IPL as we have no information about the security situation or management plans.”Tony Irish, the South African Cricketers Association (SACA) chief executive, said their players were relying on them for security advice.”Players around the world have become increasingly reliant on their Player Associations to check security arrangements so it’s only natural that they should want us and our global body involved – at least consulted.”

Villa in advanced talks for Lucas Digne

Aston Villa are in advanced talks with Everton over the signing of left-back Lucas Digne, according to a report by The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Digne fallout with Benitez

The France international’s future has come under scrutiny this season following Everton’s poor run of form, which currently sees them sitting down in 15th position in the Premier League table.

Last month, it was reported that the full-back has publicly fallen out with Rafael Benitez, with the manager confirming that Digne has asked to leave the club. As a result, the Frenchman has not played a single minute of football since the Merseyside derby defeat on December 1.

The Latest: Villa in talks with Everton

According to a report by The Athletic, Aston Villa are in advanced talks with Everton over the signing of Digne.

Steven Gerrard had identified the former Barcelona man as his top target, with Villa keen on bolstering their options at full-back.  It is reported that the 28-year-old is seeking a move to a club already playing European football, or one with a serious chance of doing so next season.

Due to the recent arrival of former Premier League superstar Philippe Coutinho, Villa are confident that their exciting new project has convinced Digne to proceed with the move.

Previous interest from relegation-threatened Newcastle United was rejected by the left-back, with Chelsea also considering a swoop for the player following Ben Chilwell’s season-ending injury. However, Thomas Tuchel’s side only wanted a loan move, whereas Everton are more keen for a permanent deal to be done.

The Verdict: Big blow for Everton

The Frenchman has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League since his arrival at Everton, with his strong crossing ability often paying dividends for the Toffees, as demonstrated by his haul of 18 league assists on Merseyside.

Having slipped down the international pecking order, Digne will likely be glad to seal his exit from Goodison Park, as he will be desperate for regular first team football ahead of the 2022 World Cup in a bid to regain his left-back spot in the France side from Theo Hernandez.

His impending departure will be a sad sight for Everton fans, as the left-back solidified himself as a fan favourite during his time at the club. Also, former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti once described the 28-year-old as ‘one of the best in Europe’, so don’t be surprise if you see Blues supporters in dismay if Digne secures a move to Aston Villa.

Wolves receive Renato Sanches boost

Lille midfielder Renato Sanches has been backed to leave the club in the January transfer window, giving Wolves fresh hope of a deal coming to fruition.

The Lowdown: Sanches linked with Wolves move

Wanderers were linked with a move for the Portugal international last summer, with Bruno Lage eyeing him up as an exciting midfield target. Sanches ended up staying at Lille but his 2021/22 season hasn’t been a memorable one to date for him, with just eight starts to his name in Ligue 1 for the reigning champions.

It increasingly looks as though the 24-year-old’s future lies away from the French club, and a new update may give Wolves fresh confidence of signing him if they still wish to do so. Indeed, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook recently claimed that the Midlanders remain interested in the midfielder.

The Latest: Journalist makes Sanches claim

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Adam White claimed that Sanches will leave Lille this month, potentially paving the way for a move to Molineux, although he was non-committal as to whether the Old Gold could go back in for the player.

White claimed: “Not to Wolves per se, but there’s been a lot of talk about him leaving. He is expected to leave. Both he and people around him have been making quite a lot of noise about him moving on.”

The Verdict: Worth the risk?

Sanches is a top-class player when he is fit and firing, proving his talent by winning the prestigious European Golden Boy award back in 2016, the same year in which he helped Portugal to European Championship glory. He was also hailed as “terrific” by BBC pundit Jermaine Jenas for his performances at Euro 2020 last summer.

The midfielder’s biggest issue is remaining injury-free, though, with just 38 league starts for Lille in two-and-a-half years at the club amid a string of fitness issues.

With Sanches’ current deal expiring in 2023, Wolves could possibly try and sign him on a cut-price deal – if not, his fitness record means that he probably isn’t worth the risk.

Cricket Australia hope Michael Clarke will take part in the Test tour of New Zealand but will not know for certain until the end of the week. Clarke left the current one-day trip and returned to Sydney on Tuesday due to “personal issues” involving his fiancée Lara Bingle, who is at the centre of a nude photo scandal.Clarke has been given leave but Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s deputy, is unsure when the vice-captain will be back. “I’ve talked to him over the last few days and we have a Test tour looming,” Brown said at the SCG. “I would hope he’s part of that group. But unless he’s ready to go, there’s no point going.”We’ll talk again over the next couple of days and our intention hopefully is to get him back in the side for the Test match.” The opening game begins in Wellington on March 19 and there is an expectation from those closer to the team that Clarke will be with the squad by then.Steven Smith and Ryan Harris have been selected for their first Test tours while Marcus North, who has been out of form in 2010, has won a reprieve. North’s position was the most contentious but Australia’s selectors have extra batting cover in Smith and Phillip Hughes.North has not scored a half-century in first-class cricket this year and was out for 8 early in Western Australia’s first innings at the Gabba on Wednesday morning. “As far as Marcus is concerned, he had a sensational South African and Ashes tour,” Hilditch said. “He’d be disappointed with the last few Test matches and the Shield since then, but we think he deserves to be on the tour.”Smith, the batsman-legspinner, and Hughes have been in outstanding form for New South Wales and are seen as long-term prospects – Smith is 20 and Hughes 21 – while Harris sealed his place by taking 27 wickets in 10 one-day internationals. Australia are still without Ben Hilfenhaus, who has missed most of the season with a knee injury, and Peter Siddle is out with a back stress fracture.”The core of the squad is the Australian Test team that performed so well during the Australian summer in defeating West Indies and Pakistan,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “Ryan Harris, having overcome injuries at the start of the season, has played really well for Australia in the shorter formats of the game.” Hilditch sees him as a man who can hurt England during next summer’s Ashes.Hughes has 953 runs at 56.05 in the Sheffield Shield this summer while Smith has started New South Wales’ game against Tasmania with 672 at 74.66, including 177 in his previous match in Hobart. “Phillip Hughes has also been in excellent form at state level and richly deserves his selection on the back of another fantastic season,” Hildtich said.”Steve Smith has had an excellent Shield season, including a big century against Tasmania recently, and of course has already demonstrated his ability to cope with the pressure of international cricket. He adds great flexibility to the squad with his exciting stroke-play, legspin bowling and gifted fielding.”Australia squad Simon Katich, Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Phillip Hughes, Steven Smith, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Clint McKay, Doug Bollinger.

Aston Villa must secure Wirtz transfer

Over recent years, Aston Villa have not been shy when it comes to spending money on new players to help strengthen their squad.

They signed the trio of Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia in the previous summer transfer window for a combined total of £89.84m according to Transfermarkt, and followed that by splashing £25m on Lucas Digne this month.

With that in mind, there’s no doubt that the Midlands club is capable of paying vast sums of cash in the transfer market when they think they need to.

Looking ahead to the remainder of this current window or even towards the summer window, one figure that Villa could look to bring in that would certainly add an extra attacking dynamic to Steven Gerrard’s team is Bayer Leverkusen’s 18-year-old attacking-midfielder Florian Wirtz, who Villa have been linked with in the past.

Despite his young age, the teenager, who is currently valued at a whopping £63m by Transfermarkt, has made 70 senior appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions, managing to score 17 goals and provide 20 assists along the way, highlighting the attacking talents he has.

Labelled as the “total package” by Germany head coach Hansi Flick in terms of his ability on the pitch, Wirtz has managed to rack up five goals and nine assists in 17 Bundesliga appearances this season.

Furthermore, he’s earned an overall performance rating of 7.41/10, making him Leverkusen’s second-highest rated player according to WhoScored, which would also comfortably make him Villa’s highest-rated player by the same metric.

With previous reports claiming that Villa’s current teenage attacking-midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka will not be signing a new deal at the Midlands club due to his lack of game time, his potential exit from Villa Park could pave the way for the club to launch a move for Wirtz to see if he would have a better chance of competing for a place in Gerrard’s side than Chukwuemeka.

Given the goals and assists he’s managed to deliver for Leverkusen so far in his short career, it wouldn’t be too difficult to see Wirtz getting regular playing time if he can have a similar sort of attacking impact in the Midlands.
