Liverpool fans delighted with Salah update

A number of Liverpool supporters are over the moon after journalist David Lynch claimed that Mohamed Salah will be available to face Chelsea next week.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are set to be without Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita for a chunk of next month due to their involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Egyptian could be a particularly big loss having had a remarkable season to date, scoring 15 goals and registering nine assists in the Premier League alone.

Newcastle preparing Ben Brereton Diaz bid

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz…

What’s the talk?

According to The Mirror, the Magpies are plotting a £2om move for the Championship predator as Eddie Howe looks to improve his attacking options.

The report claims that Newcastle are ready to table a bid to test Blackburn’s resolve, but it remains to be seen whether or not £20m will be enough to convince Rovers to part ways with the Chile international.

Could save Newcastle’s season

Nick Hammond could save Newcastle’s season by securing a deal to sign Brereton Diaz in the January transfer window as his goalscoring ability could win vital points for Howe’s side.

The Magpies are 19th in the Premier League table and two points off 17th place, although the two teams ahead of them both have games in hand which could see the gap widen. Goalscoring has been one of the factors behind their failures, with Allan Saint-Maximin (four) and Callum Wilson (six) the only players with more than one league strike to their name.

This suggests that they need another player who can come in and contribute with goals to help them avoid the drop, and that is where Brereton Diaz comes in. He has scored an outstanding 20 goals in 25 Championship outings for Blackburn this term and is showing that he can find the net at an impressive rate in the second tier.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray previously heaped praise on the attacker, saying: “You saw what I saw today; Brereton with the ball at his feet is an extraordinary talent. He’s a wonderful footballer who can dribble with both feet, take people out of the game.

“He’s still a boy, and as I’ve just said to him in the dressing room, this is a working class town. These people earn their money and pay hard money to come and watch you play and they expect you to fight for every ball, put your head in for every ball and fight for every tackle.”

These quotes highlight both the 22-year-old’s quality and his mentality, showing that he has the mindset required to perform in a relegation dogfight. Newcastle’s dire situation in the Premier League could be a challenge for the striker that he would be capable of taking on, with Mowbray explaining what is required of him at Blackburn.

Coupled with his exceptional knack for finding the back of the net, it suggests that the Chile star could come in and help save Newcastle’s season. He could supply the goalscoring threat that they have been lacking aside from Saint-Maximin and Wilson and earn vital draws or wins which could see the Magpies avoid the drop, which is why Hammond must work hard to try and get this deal done.

Aslam brightens HBL's final hopes

A round-up of the first day’s action in the fifth round of the RBS Pentangular Cup

Cricinfo staff25-Jan-2010Mohammad Aslam’s 7 for 37 gave Habib Bank Limited (HBL) the early impetus against Karachi Blues at the National Stadium. In a re-run of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, it was the runners-up who held sway on the opening morning and improved their chance of a finals spot as Aslam scythed through the Karachi batting. The left-arm spinner accounted for Nos. 4-10 with Sheharyar Ghani managing the highest of 41 in Karachi’s total of 187. In reply, HBL were rocked by Mohammad Sami’s twin blows early on, before Khaqan Arsal steadied the innings with a well-paced 57 and took them to 95 for 2 at stumps.Left-hander Naeemuddin’s unbeaten 119 defied The Rest’s charge against table-toppers Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex. With both teams on 18 points, and HBL snapping at their heels, the race for the finals spot may well hinge on the outcome of this match. Mohammad Hafeeez and Naeemuddin’s opening stand of 74 gave SNGPL a bright start after they were put in. Even when Hafeez departed and The Rest looked to get back in control in brief spurts, Naeemuddin powered on with Saleem Mughal to take them past 200. Having hit 13 boundaries already, more will be expected from Naeemuddin if SNGPL are to improve on their 272 for 6.

Pakistan favourites against historic foes

A bigger pool of players exposed to first-class and List A cricket (eight against four), the confidence of an unblemished run in the competition and greater familiarity playing in Lincoln, the venue for the game, gives Pakistan a significant advantage

Siddhartha Talya29-Jan-2010

Pakistan have been the most successful side in the Under-19 World Cup since its inception•Getty Images

Big PictureIt is perhaps fitting that the Under-19 World Cup final should feature Australia and Pakistan. One country conceived the idea of a global youth tournament, the other pioneered the trend of thrusting teenagers into the international arena. To cap it all, the teams meet in a final 22 years after facing off in the inaugural edition of the tournament, in 1988.

A tournament that now competes with first-class cricket in determining the worthiness of players at the international level, the Under-19 World Cup has been dominated by Pakistan over the years; tomorrow’s final is their third in the last four tournaments and their fourth overall.A bigger pool of players exposed to first-class and List A cricket (eight against four), an unbeaten run in the competition and greater familiarity playing in Lincoln, the venue for the summit clash, gives Pakistan a significant advantage. Not that they’ve had it easy; their previous three wins were close-run – two of them going to the last over – with each wrought from a position of weakness. This ability has been less consistent in Australia’s performances.Unlike the senior World Cup, which is a long, drawn-out tournament, the finalists of the Under-19 version have had fewer hurdles to scale. They haven’t had a common opposition, though Australia have had it easier, facing USA and Ireland in their first round. A greater potential for surprise, given the fewer steps to the trophy, makes the contest between the finalists more desirable than the one-sided offering their senior counterparts have managed to conjure.Form guideAustralia were upstaged in the last over by South Africa in the league phase, beat New Zealand comfortably and just managed to hold their breath against Sri Lanka in the semi-final, chasing 206. Since the start of 2009, they’ve been beaten in the two 50-over series they’ve been involved in, squandering leads in both instances to go down 1-2 to India and 2-3 to Sri Lanka. Though a much-improved outfit in this competition, measuring up to Pakistan’s experience, form and stubbornness will be difficult.Pakistan were among the frontrunners coming into this competition and have lived up to their reputation. They beat Zimbabwe 5-1 in a limited-overs series before being edged out by Sri Lanka in a tri-nation tournament. They began their World Cup campaign with an easy win over West Indies and a mauling of Papua New Guinea. But they have since been challenged. A late surge by wicketkeeper Mohammad Waqas snatched a penultimate ball win against Bangladesh, Hammad Azam’s composure at the death handed them the much-cherished thrill of overcoming India and an inspired fightback, again by Hammad, helped them chase 212 against West Indies in the semi-final.Players to watchHammad, an allrounder, has had the biggest impact on Pakistan’s success. An integral part of the middle order, he’s made it his responsibility to finish off games, shepherding Pakistan to three consecutive wins with his penchant for the big hits at the death and the maturity to wield restraint after an early collapse, as in the semi-final. Among those without first-class experience, Babar Azam has been a find. He is currently the third-highest run-getter in the tournament, but in conditions that have favoured fast bowlers of late, the swing of Sarmad Bhatti and Fayyaz Butt could prove hard to tackle.Australia’s fast-bowling trio of Josh Hazlewood, Alister McDermott and Nick Buchanan have grabbed 24 wickets between them at 16.22, forming the backbone of their team’s attack. Captain Mitchell Marsh has starred in the knockout phase with half-centuries against New Zealand and Sri Lanka and remains a much sought-after scalp in the Australian top order.Quotes”There’s no other country in the world that can match the talent that Pakistan has at U-19 level, just look at the last four U-19 World Cups.”
“I have really enjoyed the tournament and I’m very happy with my form because I haven’t been dismissed yet in this tournament.”
“With the sort of experience in our side, it was always a goal to be in the tournament at this end. Like any other team, we have come here to win the tournament and not just to fill up the numbers. We’ve got the side that is capable to win this tournament.”

Aston Villa must secure Aaron Ramsey deal

Now that Aston Villa have got their January transfer window business off to a flyer with a loan deal for Barcelona and former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, the Midlands club now have three-and-a-half more weeks to secure any other new players that Steven Gerrard thinks would improve his squad.

One man who Villa’s sporting director Johan Lange could look to sign in a similar deal to their one for Coutinho is Juventus and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Having been linked with a move for the Welshman recently, this could be the ideal time for Villa to swoop for him now that a deal has been agreed for Coutinho, and the fact that Juventus manager Max Allegri has labelled Ramsey an “outgoing player” from the Italian club this month.

With a total of 262 appearances in the Premier League under his belt during his time at Arsenal, with 40 goals and 51 assists to his name, the 31-year-old could offer Villa a serious amount of top-flight experience – just like Coutinho – if he were to follow in the Brazilian’s footsteps and return to England this month.

Given how Villa have two young midfielders in their squad in the shape of Jacob Ramsey and Carney Chukwuemeka, these are two players that could benefit from having a player like the Wales international – who is currently picking up a hefty wage of £175k-per-week according to Salary Sport – alongside them as a mentor.

Taking into account how the 31-year-old – who has been likened to Frank Lampard in the past by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in regards to his style of play – has only made five appearances for Juventus so far this season, it’s easy to see why Allegri sees no place for him in his squad and why a return to the Premier League could be tempting for the Welshman if he would be guaranteed regular playing time at Villa Park.

Moving forward, with the status of Ramsey’s current situation at Juventus now made clear by Allegri, Villa should definitely explore the possibility of securing a move for the midfielder, either on a loan deal or a potential permanent transfer to see if he can slot into Gerrard’s squad and help the team progress.
