Narsingh Deonarine ton carries Guyana to semis

A round-up of the second day’s action – or lack of due to rain – at the President’s Cup

Cricinfo staff31-Oct-2009Narsingh Deonarine: To Guyana’s rescue•The Nation

Narsingh Deonarine’s unbeaten century boosted Guyana into the semi-finals of the WICB President’s Cup with a seven-wicket success over Barbados at Albion. Chasing 232, Guyana were indebted to Deonarine’s 102 which sealed the win with 6.5 overs remaining out of an allotted 49.Deonarine put on 133 off 114 balls for the third wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (38*), the pair having come together in the 24th over when the captain Ramnaresh Sarwan chipped a return catch to Dwayne Smith. There were no further hiccups, however, as Deonarine and Chanderpaul battered the bowlers and move Guyana to eight points following their first-round victory over the Leeward Islands on Wednesday.Barbados had began drastically after Ryan Hinds opted to bat. Martin Nurse went second ball of the innings, nicking Esuan Crandon behind for 0. Hinds (31) and Kirk Edwards (32) added 68 for the second wicket to restore order but Hinds’ dismissal, bowled by Crandon in the 16th over, opened the sluice gates. Barbados proceeded to lose six wickets for 52 runs to crash to 120 for 7 in the 32nd over. Suliemann Benn, the West Indies left-arm spinner, swung his way to 39 from 40 balls in an 82-run stand with Khalid Springer (45 from 37) that got Barbados past 200. The pair were dismissed within nine balls of each other and the tail went cheaply.Barbados, on four points, will face Leewards in their final preliminary round match on Saturday in an attempt to claim one of the three remaining semi-final berths. In a rain-hit match at the Providence Stadium, the two bottom-placed teams were hit with another road block. Leeward Islands were 37 for 0 after six overs against West Indies Under-19, out of which 31 came off Kieron Powell’s bat, when rain stopped play. The showers continued and play was called off at 2:00pm. The game was abandoned as a no-result. The Leewards and West Indies U-19s were already coming off losses in Wednesday’s opening matches and remain stuck at the bottom of the points tables with one point each.Jamaica’s shot at sealing a place in the semi-finals look slim after their match against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) was washed out at Georgetown. Persistent rain forced an abandonment just 12.1 overs into CCC’s innings after they opted to bat. With the score 41 for 2, the players were hurried into shelter and the rain continued through the afternoon, leaving the umpires Clyde Duncan and Dalton Holder to call off play at 1:45 pm. Jerome Taylor’s two wickets in the first over had boosted Jamaica but a 37-run partnership between Romel Currency and Nekoli Perris put matters back on course before the deluge. Both teams received a point for the abandonment, leaving CCC with four points following win over the Windward Islands on Wednesday, and Jamaica with a single point after they were beaten by Trinidad & Tobago in their opening match.Rain played spoilsport at West Demerara as well, where no play was possible for Trinidad & Tobago and the Windward Islands.

Crystal Palace handed Eze boost pre-Everton

Crystal Palace have received a big injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Everton at Selhurst Park this evening.

What’s the word?

In Friday’s press conference, Patrick Vieira revealed that Eberechi Eze has been training well as he continues his recovery from an Achilles problem, with Joachim Andersen and Nathan Ferguson also progressing well.

“The team news is Joachim took some part of training the last couple of days with the team. And Nathan and Eze are doing well,” the manager confirmed.

That wasn’t where the good news ended for the Eagles, though. Vieira provided a positive update on James McArthur, who has been absent in recent weeks with a hamstring issue.

The Frenchman revealed: “James is feeling better as well. He has started doing some individual training on the field, and this morning he took part in the first 15-20 minutes of the training session – but he will not be involved in the Everton game.”

Palace fans will be buzzing

The nwws that Eze is making good progress in his quest to regain full match fitness will have the Palace fans buzzing with excitement given their recent struggles. After a promising run of form during the autumn, the south London outfit are currently enduring a four-game winless run, having lost their last three consecutive fixtures.

Despite having the attacking firepower of Wilfried Zaha, Odsonne Edouard and Michael Olise, Vieira’s charges have been unable to carve open opposition defences over the last few weeks, failing to find the back of the net against both Leeds and Manchester United.

Therefore, this latest revelation will surely be warmly welcomed by everyone associated with Palace, not least the supporters. In 2020/21, Eze was the Eagles’ chief creator with six assists, and his absence from the starting XI has been sorely missed in the opening weeks of the current campaign.

The 23-year-old has only been able to make two substitute appearances so far this term, but if he’s fit enough to feature from the off against Everton today, he could be the difference-maker for Palace once again if he can replicate his form from last season.

Pakistan players close to IPL return

The prospect of Pakistan players once again participating in the IPL is nearing reality, as the Pakistan board and the league clear the paperwork required for players to return

The prospect of Pakistan players once again participating in the IPL is nearing reality, as the Pakistan board and the league clear the paperwork required for players to return after a one-year gap.Pakistan’s players were absent from the second IPL, held earlier this year in South Africa, after their government did not allow them to travel to India – where the tournament was originally to be held – for security reasons. The decision came in the wake of the Mumbai attacks last year, after which relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated considerably. Eleven players from Pakistan had taken part in the first IPL, though after the Mumbai attacks, only four were retained by their franchises, though their contracts were suspended until further resolution. The PCB has been keen on getting their players involved once again after Ijaz Butt, board chairman, raised the matter on a trip to India last month and said after that the relevant government authorities had also cleared Pakistan’s players to play. The IPL said on Monday, after an internal meeting, that they required NOCs from the PCB as well having their visas in order by November 20.The NOCs, according to Wasim Bari, COO, PCB, have already been sent to the IPL and now the board has asked the IPL to send letters of invitation to Pakistan players to initiate the visa process. An IPL official told Cricinfo that the league will help to facilitate return of Pakistan’s players.”The NOCs have already been sent a week ago,” Bari told Cricinfo. “The normal procedure with visa requirements, for India or even England for playing county cricket, is that letters of invitations are sent and then the visa process begins from there.”As well as the four players who already have contracts – Kamran Akmal and Sohail Tanvir (Rajasthan Royals), Umar Gul (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Misbah-ul-Haq (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – a number of others are likely to be in demand as the third season approaches. Pakistan won the World Twenty20 earlier this year and are arguably the top side in the format, having won their last seven games and reached the final of the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007.And other players who formed the basis of Pakistan’s win in June, such as Shahid Afridi who has already had an unsuccessful stint with the Deccan Chargers, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Aamer and Abdul Razzaq, are likely to attract the attention of franchises.”From our point of view, Umar Gul is a great bowler and we would definitely want him for the next IPL,” Joy Bhattarcharya, team director of Kolkata Knight Riders, told Cricinfo. “However, whether he will be able to join depends on the understanding between the IPL/BCCI, the PCB and both the governments.”

Smith mix-up thickens the plot

Plays of the day from the first day of the second Test at Durban

Andrew McGlashan in Durban26-Dec-2009Graeme Smith and Kevin Pietersen don’t go out of their way to be friends with each other, but at least now they will have something in common to talk about if their paths do cross. At Centurion last week, Pietersen had been in total control on 81 until his horrible mix-up with Jonathan Trott. Today, Smith was cruising towards a century on 75 not out, until an equally grim mix-up with AB de Villiers left him diving in vain for his crease. It was a moment that changed the momentum of the day and left England buoyed on a sapping day in Durban. Things got worse for South Africa when JP Duminy fell to Graham Onions to undo much of the good work done by Smith and Jacques Kallis, who added 150 for the third wicket, and it came a quite a relief when bad light and a thunderstorm forced a premature close.”It’s frustrating when stuff like that happens, but unfortunately these things happen and it’s not ideal,” Kallis said. “It’s not the first time it’s happened and it won’t be the last. We’ve moved on and the rest of the guys have to do a job.”We had done really well up until tea and the day was clearly belonging to us, then that half-an-hour, losing those three wickets, wasn’t ideal, and it’s put the day in the balance when we had it by the scruff of the neck.”It was an awful way for Smith to go because he had played an impressive captain’s innings. He has talked a good game since his team came within one wicket of victory at Centurion, but it’s always easier for a skipper when he is also contributing in his primary role – and in the first Test he was the least productive of South Africa’s batsmen. England have targeted him as one of the key scalps, and it was important for Smith not to allow the tourists to exert an early hold over him.The omens weren’t necessarily very good. The last time Smith batted at Kingsmead, against Australia in March, he left the ground with a broken finger courtesy of a hostile Mitchell Johnson, and he was wincing in pain on this occasion when Jimmy Anderson struck him on the left glove and caused a bruised finger. It wasn’t just the latest bash to his finger that made it painful going, but also the accuracy of England’s early bowling which left Smith waiting until his 63rd delivery to collect a boundary. His innings was a model of self-restraint because he is someone who likes to impose himself on the opposition attack. This time, though, he realised such an approach would be foolhardy, and the best way to hurt England was to battle out the new ball and cash in as conditions eased. His final tally of 75 from 186 balls was his second slowest score of fifty-plus in his entire 79-match career, behind only the 209-ball 74 he made against Sri Lanka, at Galle, in 2004. However, the best batsmen can adapt to conditions, and Smith certainly showed that skill. He isn’t a pretty player to watch, but it’s impossible not to admire the steel with which Smith plays his cricket. He was repeatedly beaten early on, especially by Onions whose wicket-to-wicket line was proving a handful, but he helped his cause by playing the line rather than being drawn into chasing deliveries. The fact that all his hard work was ended by a run-out will make it even more galling for South Africa, especially considering it came less than three overs after Kallis had also gone for 75 to end their hardworking partnership which spanned 45 overs. For the sake of the Test match, however, a mini-collapse here and there will be no bad thing. The likelihood is that more time will be lost throughout the next four days to a combination of rain and bad light, so anything to move the match forward will keep the interest alive. Smith managed to do just that on the opening day with a combination of his guts, determination and an ultimately ungainly dismissal.
