de Villiers, van Wyk down Somerset

The Eagles showed commendable control in sealing a five-wicket win in Hyderabad, one that pushed the other county team to the brink of elimination

The Eagles aren’t going to make many friends in English county cricket. The South African side, who progressed this far after a thrilling win over Sussex, showed excellent control in sealing a five-wicket win in Hyderabad, one that pushed the other county team to the brink of elimination. Morne van Wyk and Ryan Bailey played crucial roles with the bat after CJ de Villiers starred with the ball in the afternoon and the team picked up two points from this win.The tone was set after Justin Langer opted to bat. de Villiers, who sealed the Eagles’ promotion in the one-over eliminator against Sussex, raced through two wickets in his first over. Somerset slumped to 52 for 5 in nine overs and relied on their club’s record sixth-wicket partnership of 77 charged by Wes Durston, but a target of 133 proved easy for Eagles.Marcus Trescothick’s sudden return to England forced Craig Kieswetter to open, but he didn’t go much further than two streaky boundaries. In a double-wicket opening over, de Villiers began by trapping Kieswetter right in front and a wide later Arul Suppiah, stuck on the crease, missed the ball and was done in by the angle. That over brought Zander de Bruyn to the middle with the need to add some solidity to the innings. It was not to be, as he swatted an ugly heave straight to mid-off to gift de Villiers a third, and Thandi Tshabalala spun one past Langer’s bat first ball to add to Somerset’s woes. When Peter Trego was stunningly held by Alan Kruger in his first over, diving to his left to pluck a return catch, Somerset were staring down a tunnel.Step up Durston. From the get-go he ticked along nicely, just dabbing and deflecting until he clobbered Ryan McLaren for three fours in a row in the 15th over and repeated the feat when de Villiers returned for the 17th, racing past fifty in just 26 balls. The arc between point and third man proved a profitable area for James Hildreth, who slashed and edged with perfection for 33 runs in that region. Apart from one edge, Durston’s shots were crisp and calculated; when the fast bowlers offered room he was keen to steer and run the ball fine. It was a controlled yet rapid innings, and the spark the innings desperately needed. After bowling the most expensive over of the innings, de Villiers hit back, bowling a maiden in the 19th over – a rarity in Twenty20 format – to finish with 4 for 17, the best figures of the tournament. The last two overs yielded just two leg byes and a single, as the Eagles limited the damage, and that ultimately proved crucial.Chasing 133 proved easy enough in the end, but Somerset made inroads early. Rilee Roussow, whose splendid half-century was pivotal against Sussex, looked intent on showing his aggressive side but miscued to mid-on off Charl Willoughby, and Adrian McLaren’s poor run was extended when he top-edged to short fine leg. Two ugly dismissals were followed by a soft offering from Boeta Dippenaar, sashaying down to the spin of Max Waller and picking out long-off.With his captain gone for 18, van Wyk – who at this stage had eased to 29 from 26 – steered the chase and gained useful help from Bailey’s 29. van Wyk, who struck four fours and a six, was particularly strong working the ball to the leg side, but also played some fine checked drives to trouble Somerset. He was shaping to take the Eagles to victory, but top-edged Alfonso Thomas and was well held by a running and diving Kieswetter for 47. Bailey went soon after but victory was achieved with eight balls remaining.

Dallas steals show in Leeds victory

Stuart Dallas stole the show at Elland Road on Tuesday night as Leeds United picked up a long-awaited victory in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side narrowly defeated Crystal Palace thanks to a last-minute penalty from Brazilian winger Raphinha but it wasn’t the exciting dynamo who excelled most up in west Yorkshire.

It was the £12.5m-rated Northern Irish utility man – dubbed the Cookstown Cafu – who looked ever so impressive filling in at right-back in the continued absence of vice-captain Luke Ayling, contributing at either end of the pitch and having a major impact under the Argentine.

The £53k-per-week gem has played no fewer than six different roles for the Whites this campaign and this midweek display was another reminder of just how vital he is to have around.

As per SofaScore, Dallas registered a match-high six tackles and also contributed in abundance defensively, with a team-most three interceptions and two blocks, whilst he even won a total of seven duels.

This level of performance meant that Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Edouard had very little to say on his side and as such, they could not affect the game for Patrick Vieira’s visiting cast.

His influence wasn’t just in their own half, however, as the 30-year-old got up and down the wing to great effect, managing to deliver two accurate crosses, on top of creating one key chance and having 62 touches of the ball – the fourth-most of any Leeds player.

Dallas’ display earned high praise from those that witnessed him in action – for instance, TEAMtalk editor James Marshment claimed he “led the fight from the back” and was “immense”, whilst LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross graded him amongst United’s star performers.

Of course, Raphinha will take plenty of the plaudits but overall, his display was way off his usual standard as he lost possession a whopping 31 times – nearly double any other Leeds player – and made just one cross from eight attempts, per SofaScore.

“Not quite at his sparkling best,” is how Cross described it after full-time.

So forget the 22-year-old, it was Dallas’ night at Elland Road.

Foi a principal válvula de escape e aproveitou a velocidade contra adversários mais lentos. Acertou no último cruzamento, antes do gol.

Apodi chegou com velocidade no lance do gol, e aproveitou a pouca estatura do lateral-esquerdo alvinegro, que também pouco apoiou.

Kemp happy to return to South African fold

Allrounder Justin Kemp has said he is relieved to be back in the official fold with South Africa after his stint with the rebel Indian Cricket League

Allrounder Justin Kemp has said he is relieved to be back in the official fold with South Africa after his stint with the rebel Indian Cricket League. Kemp, who is now back in contention for Cape Cobras, will play his first match for his domestic franchise in the revamped 40-over competition next Friday, against the Lions at the Wanderers.Kemp, along with several international and Indian domestic players, severed ties with the ICL after its third season, scheduled earlier this year, could not take place due to the global economic downturn. Kemp admitted that, in hindsight, it was a mistake joining the ICL but the players back then were hopeful the league would be given official status by the ICC and the cricket boards. Kemp was banned from playing domestic cricket in South Africa but was allowed to represent his county Kent.”It’s lovely to be back. I’m looking forward to playing again,” Kemp told . “It was tough coming home last year and not being able to play.”It was a mistake to go and play there but we thought things would get sorted out and the rebel league issue would disappear. I was not playing for South Africa at the time and the IPL hadn’t started yet.”Kemp joined the ICL in 2007 and was part of the successful Hyderabad Heroes unit, which won the inaugural tournament and finished runners-up in the second season. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the tournament and it’s players, Kemp said he enjoyed his experience.”It was fantastic in the first season. There was a media blackout and people didn’t see the games,” Kemp said. “There were some really good Indian players. We won the first competition and lost the final of the second one in the third leg of the final.”Kemp had an impressive 2009 season with Kent, scoring 780 runs at 43.33 in the County Championship and picking up eight wickets. He helped his county gain promotion to the top division and will take a call on returning for the 2010 season.”I’m probably fitter than I was in my 20s, and I feel I have a lot of miles left in my body. I worked a lot with coach Graham Ford at Kent, and I often bowled first change. I played all the four-day games,” Kemp said. “There is so much scope at the Cobras for guys to kick on. The big challenge is four-day cricket, but there is so much talent in the Cape that, if we get a few things right, we can challenge in that competition.”Kemp last played for South Africa during the ICC World Twenty20, which just preceded his entry into the ICL.

Lage must unleash Fabio Silva

Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Fabio Silva for £35m in a record-breaking transfer for the club, but Silva has since only been given 36 minutes of Premier League football so far this season under Bruno Lage.

The Portuguese boss hasn’t been playing the 19-year-old forward often, with just two starts for the side in the league cup, during which he has bagged two assists for the side.

The Wolves manager did speak out last week about why he hasn’t been included in the side much this season:

“Fabio is important for us,” Lage said. “He’s a young talent. Me and my staff have a pathway for the youth. Luis (Nascimento) worked with Fabio before so we see potential in him.”

“He needs to continue to work and wait for that chance. He needs to work for today and work for tomorrow.”

The teenager played 37 games in all competitions last season under Nuno Santo, scoring four goals and assisting three times for the side but has become out of favour for game time since the arrival of new manager Bruno Lage, in the summer.

Silva has been predicted to be an “extraordinary striker” by Sporting CP legend, Manuel Fernandes and even compared the teenager to Ronaldo.

“When Ronaldo was 17, he played as a centre-forward for Sporting’s youth teams. I saw him doing things that I’m now seeing a boy from FC Porto do, Fabio Silva.”

One of the main reasons that Silva did get so much game time last season was due to the fact Raul Jimenez suffered a horrific skull injury a few months into the season in November 2020, missing the rest of the season for Wolves, meaning that the youngster had the opportunity to step into his shoes quickly.

Although the Mexican has made his return to the side, Lage will need to look at future prospects for Silva, who will be keen to break back into the first team.

Wolves will be looking to capitalise on their fantastic first half of the season, with the view to securing a European spot by finishing in the top half of the Premier League.

The number of attacking options in Wolves’ locker still hasn’t deterred the rumour mill from working overtime when it comes to the imminent winter transfer window, with Enner Valencia linked to a move to the Molineux.

However, Lage could make smarter moves by saving millions and forgetting about the aforementioned target, utilising Silva in the team instead.

Newcastle in talks over Sven Botman deal

A major transfer claim has been made on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Lille centre-back Sven Botman…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Duncan Castles has revealed that the Magpies are in discussions with the defender’s representatives and the French champions could be willing to part ways with him for a fee of around €25m (£21m) due to their need to bring money into the club.

He told the Transfer Window podcast, via This Is Futbol: “My information is Lille, because of their desperation to create income in this window, might sell Botman and for as little as €25 million. There are definitely discussions with the players’ representatives.

“The deal has not been done. I’m told it’s a possibility, but it’s not a straightforward move. When it comes out that Botman is likely available for €25 million, the chances are that a club in a better league position will get interested in that deal and come in and compete with Newcastle.

“Then they get into the question mark of: can you convince a player of Botman’s quality – who would be a great addition to the defence – to come to Newcastle with money and the promise of something good down the line, rather than go to a more established club immediately without having to worry about what’s going to happen with Newcastle over the next half-season.”

Fans could be buzzing

This update from Castles will surely leave Newcastle fans buzzing as it appears to indicate that a deal for Botman is attainable for the club in January. If Lille are in dire need of money, then the Magpies could swoop in and pick up the centre-back for a cut-price fee, as the French outfit are seemingly in no position to negotiate an extortionate price.

The 21-year-old has averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.93 in Ligue 1 this season after managing a score of 7.08 last term. This shows that he has been consistently performing to a high standard in France, despite his young age, and could therefore be an excellent addition to the Newcastle squad.

Eddie Howe’s team have only kept one clean sheet in the Premier League this season and are conceding two goals per game on average. Botman helped Lille to keep an outstanding 20 clean sheets in 37 matches last term, showing that he has the ability to function as part of a strong, resolute, defence at the top level.

This illustrates why supporters will surely be buzzing with this major claim from Castles. The Dutch defender could be a superb signing for the Magpies, given his performances in Ligue 1 and his scope for development at the age of 21, and Castles has made it clear that Newcastle are working to get a deal done for him ahead of the January window.
