Anderson backs Johnson to shine again

James Anderson, the spearhead of the England attack, expressed supreme confidence that Mitchell Johnson would not only play in the third Test, but emerge from his extended form slump to again trouble England’s batsmen

Mitchell Johnson has found the unlikeliest of allies as he attempts to retain his place in the Australian line-up for the Edgbaston Test. James Anderson, the spearhead of the England attack, expressed supreme confidence that his opposite number would not only play in the third Test, but emerge from his extended form slump to again trouble England’s batsmen.”If I’d have had 18 months like he had, then two bad games, I would not expect to get dropped for the next game,” Anderson said. “As a bowler, you do go through varying bits of forms. The last 18 months he’s been the best bowler by a country mile for Australia and all their success has pretty much centred around him. For him to have a couple of bad Tests and for people to be getting on his back is a bit harsh. He’s just going through a bit of a dodgy patch, and I think he’s a good enough bowler to come through the other side.”Johnson’s demoralising outing against Northamptonshire, in which he managed a solitary tailend wicket and conceded runs at almost six-per-over, has prompted speculation that he could be demoted from the Australian XI to accommodate the dependable Stuart Clark at Edgbaston. Such a move would hand Australia the unenviable task of overhauling their bowling blueprints mid-series, given that much of their planning had centred on Johnson thriving in the role of attack spearhead. In four first-class matches on tour, Johnson has taken 12 wickets at an average of 50.33 with an economy rate of 4.44. His dismissal of David Wigley to close out the three-day match against Northam ended a 35-over wicketless streak that extended back to the first innings at Lord’s, and his general inaccuracy has made it difficult for the Australians to build pressure in the field.Still, despite Johnson’s struggles, Ravi Bopara is expecting the left-armer to play at Edgbaston from Thursday. Bopara is acutely aware of Johnson’s latent potential, having fallen to him in the first innings at Cardiff, and, like Anderson, believes the Australian paceman will turn his form around.”He’s proven himself at international cricket,” Bopara said. “He’s done it against South Africa, who are No. 2 in the world. For us, yes it is good that he hasn’t quite done as well as he probably started off in South Africa. But good cricketers always bounce back.”Personally, I’m budgeting on him being there. He’s a strike bowler. If he’s not, he’s not. I’m not going to look too far into it. The game doesn’t start until Thursday. I’ll worry about it at 10.58am.”Bopara added that England had not discussed Johnson’s negative body language, which has been so down at times that Tim Nielsen, the Australian coach, felt compelled to address it after the Lord’s Test. “It’s a natural thing in cricket,” Bopara said. “If things ain’t going your way, it’s very hard to stay upbeat. You’re just kidding yourself really. We’ve played enough cricket to know if the other team are going really well it’s going to be difficult to keep jumping around and buzzing around. That’s just the way it is.”The Australians have rallied around Johnson in the aftermath of the Lord’s Test, deflecting media and public criticism at every opportunity. Brad Haddin is the latest to offer his backing to his out-of-form team-mate, noting that Johnson was still pounding the gloves on tour.”He’s had a very successful two years, his bowling was outstanding in South Africa,” Haddin said. “He is still taking wickets for us and in his game he still feels pretty comfortable so I don’t see that much of a difference. Obviously it was different conditions in South Africa that allowed the ball to swing a bit more and we’re using different balls here that are probably starting to swing a bit later. From where I’m standing his pace is still up and it’s all pretty good.”

Liverpool fans erupt over Danjuma claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have erupted over a fresh update on their pursuit of Villarreal star Arnaut Danjuma.

The former Bournemouth winger, who made his move to La Liga over the summer transfer window, has since gone on to shine under Unai Emery at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

Bagging five goals and an assist in just nine Spanish top flight starts so far (WhoScored), Danjuma has also netted twice in the Champions League whilst earning his first call-up to the Netherlands national team since 2018.

Indeed, it has been quite the start to 2021/22 for Danjuma, and a claim has now emerged involving Liverpool. As per reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano, there has been an update on Fenway Sports Group’s pursuit of the player.

According to his information, as he explained on the Here We Go Podcast, Liverpool are hunting for wide players and ‘love’ the 24-year-old in particular – but there is a problem in the shape of his current club.

“Liverpool are looking for wingers because in January they’ll be losing Salah and Mane, no panic buys, only if they have a good opportunity they’ll do it,” Romano explained (via TEAMtalk).

“I am told Liverpool love Danjuma, but Villarreal have no intentions of opening talks in January.”

Flocking to this claim, many Reds are excited by the prospect of the ex-Cherries ace as a target despite being unlikely to sign him mid-season.

Glucose injections revived Bond's battered back

New Zealand’s injury prone fast bowler has said that a series of glucose injections into his fragile back has helped revive his international prospects

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has said that a series of glucose injections into his fragile back has helped revive his international prospects. Bond will be in Chennai as part of the New Zealand A team for the annual Buchi Babu All-India invitation tournament from August 16 to 29.Bond, who has suffered repeated stress fractures to the back, has been receiving courses of prolotherapy to ease the soreness in his lower back. Bond has already been named in New Zealand’s ODI squad for Sri Lanka next month, marking an international recall after nearly two years.”It’s been the best thing I’ve ever had for it,” Bond told the before the team’s departure for India. “It relaxes the back, loosens it up and makes a massive difference. I’ve got a few screws and wires in there and it can make the back pretty tight but this just frees it up.”Bond said he had heard about the injections performed by Dr John Lyftogt last season. “It can be quite painful initially but then settles down,” he said.Bond returns to Chennai, where his performances in the same tournament eight years ago caught the eye of the national selectors. A series of injuries and more recently his participation in the unsanctioned ICL threatened to derail his career. Having quit the league, he had made himself available for national selection. He said he was happy New Zealand didn’t fast-track him into the Test squad in Sri Lanka. “I think I’ve got the better end of the deal,” he said.New Zealand will play their first two-day game on August 16 against Andhra Cricket Association XI.

Jan Bednarek impressed for Poland

With 11 games played in the Premier League so far this season, Southampton have only managed to concede 12 goals, fewer than any other side in the bottom half of the league table as the St Mary’s outfit continue their push to avoid relegation.

One Saints figure that has played a big part in Southampton’s defence so far this season is Jan Bednarek, who has played the full 90 minutes in all of their seven previous league games.

The centre-back, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £20k-per-week at Southampton according to Spotrac, was on international duty last night in Poland’s 2-1 defeat against Hungary in their latest World Cup qualifying match.

Despite the disappointing result, Bednarek proved with his performance why Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has put so much faith in him in recent weeks.

During the full 90 minutes that he was on the pitch for on Monday night, Bednarek managed to have 86 touches of the ball, complete 72 of the 75 passes he attempted and even have one attempt on target.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

From a defensive point of view, Bednarek managed to block one shot, make one tackle, complete two interceptions, two clearances and win 100% of the duels he was involved in, showing that even though he couldn’t help his country ultimately keep a clean sheet on the night, he was still a useful defensive outlet for them at the back.

As well as this latest international performance, Bednarek has shown his worth to Hasenhuttl with his performances in the Premier League this term. WhoScored currently list the defender as Southampton’s joint-third highest rated player with an overall rating of 6.91/10 alongside fellow defender Kyle Walker-Peters.

This also demonstrates that Bednarek has stepped up to the plate for Hasenhuttl in the absence of Jannik Vestergaard, who left St. Mary’s during the previous summer transfer window for a move to Leicester City.

Taking this into account and the fact that Hasenhuttl has previously described Bednarek as an “important” player for his Southampton side, it’s safe to say that the defender has certainly shown his worth this season for club and country.

Moving forward, with Saints defender Jack Stephens still out injured for the time being, Hasenhuttl and everyone else at the south coast club will undoubtedly be hoping that Bednarek can keep delivering on the pitch for Southampton for as long as possible, as his defensive efforts could well push the club to a finish in the top half of the league table by the end of the season.

West Brom: Ismael must axe Kipre v Forest

West Brom face another test in the Championship tonight with a home clash against Nottingham Forest to try and get their season back on track after weeks of mixed results.

Their previous league outing saw them draw 0-0 against Blackpool, leaving the Baggies without a win in their last three games.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players West Brom manager Valerien Ismael could pick for his starting XI to take on Forest, one man who featured in the draw against Blackpool but should not be in the team on this occasion is Cedric Kipre.

In the match at Blackpool in midweek, the centre-back – who is currently earning a weekly wage of £14k-per-week according to Salary Sport – was something of a liability at the back for the Baggies, even though they managed to keep a clean sheet on the day.

In this regard, the 24-year-old managed to get dribbled past on two occasions, gave three fouls away (which led to him being handed a yellow card), lost possession 13 times, misplaced 11 passes and lost seven of his 12 duels.

This performance ultimately earned the centre-back, who has been previously described as an “assassin” by former Baggies manager Slaven Bilic, an underwhelming overall match rating of 6.5/10 from SofaScore, making him the joint-lowest rated West Brom player on the day alongside Karlan Grant.

Looking ahead to tonight’s match, perhaps it could be the best option for Ismael to take Kipre out of the team so that he doesn’t end up potentially costing the Baggies the game, especially when they could really do with a win to keep them in the race for promotion by the end of the campaign.

In terms of who Ismael could utilise instead of Kipre tonight to help Albion to another clean sheet, perhaps it could be the right time for Semi Ajayi to come back into the team after being an unused substitute for their four previous league games.

Mediator says board's surprise document sank talks

The West Indies players’ dispute could have been settled this week but for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) submitting a new document at the last minute, according to the mediator Sir Shridath Ramphal

The West Indies players’ dispute could have been settled this week but for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) submitting a new document at the last minute, according to the mediator Sir Shridath Ramphal. Talks broke down between the WICB and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) after more than a month of mediation over contract disputes, leaving a second-string team to represent West Indies at the Champions Trophy and raising doubts over when the leading players will be available. The CARICOM-appointed mediator Ramphal, a former Commonwealth secretary-general, said that with a day of negotiations remaining earlier this week, he had been confident the parties would reach an agreement. However, Ramphal’s report, which has appeared on caribbeancricket.com, indicated the WICB had surprised him and the WIPA with the late addition of a new set of requirements.”As those efforts were unfolding, the board produced an alternative document which differed in significant respects from the evolved text and was not acceptable to WIPA,” Ramphal wrote. “It was the only text the board was willing to sign … [and] it was proposed should be kept ‘secret’ while a protracted arbitration process on fourteen issues was pursued.”However, WICB vice-president Dave Cameron said the board needed to submit the new proposal as Ramphal’s earlier interpretation of the board’s positions “did not reflect the views and issues of the WICB”.”That is part of the problem,” Cameron told the . “None of the issues we brought to the table, we felt, were being dealt with in a serious way and we kept saying that there could only be a long-term solution if we deal with these issues.”But the board also came under fire from Bharrat Jagdeo, the president of Guyana and the CARICOM chairman, who met with WICB and WIPA representatives in July before appointing Ramphal as mediator. Jagdeo said the WICB had hurt negotiations right from the start by not disclosing that a second-string Champions Trophy squad had already been selected.”The members of the board did not disclose to me or to WIPA that the board had already selected a ‘B’ team for the Champions Trophy in South Africa,” Jagdeo said. Ramphal agreed that the non-disclosure had “handicapped the ‘mediation’ – but did not halt it.”The breakdown in talks leaves arbitration as the most likely next step. Cameron said arbitration was almost inevitable, because “some of the issues neither party will be able to resolve”.Dinanath Ramnarine, the WIPA president and CEO, said the association’s executive and players would meet in Guyana over the weekend to discuss their next move. He said it was disappointing that the WICB had introduced the new “not negotiable” document when a resolution had appeared to be within sight.”After our meeting over the weekend we are going to be very clear as to how we proceed going forward given the action taken by the board,” Ramnarine said. For now, Floyd Reifer will continue as acting captain and will lead a severely weakened side to the Champions Trophy after he also led the team to Test and ODI series losses against Bangladesh. The players’ strike has also raised concerns in Australia that West Indies will send a weak squad for their Test series beginning in Brisbane in November.Chris Gayle said it was too early to predict when he and the rest of the leading players would make themselves available. “It’s sad but this is how it is,” Gayle told CMC. “The last thing we wanted to do was bring the game into disrepute and make the cricket have to suffer.”
