Jannik Vestergaard was poor against Napoli

Leicester City got their Europa League campaign off to a frustrating start on Thursday night after blowing a two-goal lead to draw with Napoli at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes started the Group C encounter in strong fashion, taking the lead through Ayoze Perez after he connected perfectly with an inch-perfect Harvey Barnes cross.

Summer signing Patson Daka then thought he’d secured his first goal for his new club before it was eventually ruled out for offside, but the Midlands outfit weren’t to be denied. Just after the hour mark, Barnes turned from creator to finisher, doubling Leicester’s lead and putting Brendan Rodgers’ side firmly in the driving seat.

However, a late collapse from the FA Cup holders saw Napoli earn themselves a deserved point at the King Power Stadium. Nigeria international Victor Osimhen’s reduced the deficit with a delightful touch past Kasper Schmeichel, before he completed the comeback with a header in the 87th minute.

It was a night of mixed emotions for Leicester, although they’ll be left ruing what could have been had their defensive unit put in a better performance against the Azzurri.

One member of the back four was arguably more at fault than any other. As per SofaScore, Jannik Vestergaard received a match rating of just 5.9 out of 10, by far the worst handed out to any player on the pitch.

The Denmark international was brought in by Rodgers to firm up his backline following an injury to Wesley Fofana, but the former Celtic boss won’t have been impressed by what he saw last night.

Vestergaard lost six of his eight duels against Napoli, was dribbled past on four occasions and only picked out a teammate with two of his five attempted long passes (SofaScore).

The 6 foot 5 beast will need to improve and adapt to his new surroundings quickly in order to keep his place in the starting XI, and Rodgers will be hoping he does just that over the weekend when Leicester take on Brighton.

Bransgrove wants end of international Twenty20s

Rod Bransgrove, the high-profile Hampshire chairman, has outlined several radical proposals, including having two divisions in Test cricket and cutting down the number of Tests, to revitalise the game’s longest format. He also advocated banning international Twenty20s and making ODIs 40-over-a-side games.”I would reduce the number of Tests and remove all the meaningless games between aspiring countries and major Test nations,” he told the . “They are degrading the game; nobody is interested in them, nobody goes to them and nobody benefits.”To ensure more competitive Tests, Bransgrove wanted two divisions with six teams each. He mooted that relegation and promotion would be decided by an annual play-off between the top-ranked team from the second division and the bottom-ranked one in the first division. He also recommended getting rid of international Twenty20s and having three major domestic Twenty20 leagues – the IPL, the English (and Welsh) Premier League, and a southern hemisphere competition – with windows in the international calendar to allow the game’s leading players to participate. “The EPL would be jointly owned by all 18 counties and MCC (and, in part, by other important stakeholders such as ECB) but will be made up of eight or nine city-based franchises using the largest stadia to maximise revenues,” he said. “Each of these competitions would run for four to five weeks when there is no international cricket so all players can take part.”As for the game’s other major format, one-day internationals, Bransgrove felt that reducing them to 40-over affairs would “remove the boring middle 10 overs” as well as reduce interference from bad light.Bransgrove is expected to echo these views at an ECB conference next Monday that was called by board chairman Giles Clarke to discuss the future of Test cricket.

Strauss delays team announcement

Naming a final eleven the day before a Test may bring a sense of stability and readiness to a team’s preparations, but despite the chaotic backdrop to England’s tour of the Caribbean, the new captain Andrew Strauss will not be rushed into showing his hand

Naming a final eleven the day before a Test may bring a sense of stability and readiness to a team’s preparations, but despite the chaotic backdrop to England’s tour of the Caribbean, the new captain Andrew Strauss will not be rushed into showing his hand for the first Test at Kingston. Instead, Strauss will name his team shortly before the toss, to allow his pivotal performer, Andrew Flintoff, as much time as possible to confirm his readiness to take part. The early days of England’s tour have been dominated by another watching brief over Flintoff, who was withdrawn from the opening tour game on the first day after complaining of a side strain. He made a day-trip to Jamaica for a scan, which came back clear, but life is never that simple for Flintoff. He has steadily built up his workload in recent days, but his preparation for such a crucial Test has been far from ideal. He was expected to undergo a rigorous workout in the two days leading in to the match, but has been managed very carefully, so much so that his final fitness Test comprised of roughly 18 balls in the middle and another 10 in the nets.Protecting Flintoff has always been an issue for England’s team management and now that problem rests on Strauss’s shoulders. It’s a case of risk versus reward. Flintoff brings so much to the team, but another setback – if he isn’t 100% fit here – would be a major blow for the rest of the series, and possibly beyond.Strauss, though, said he was “very confident” that Flintoff would be fine in the morning, but the only true test will come when he bowls at full pace over a number of spells in the heat of the day. The issue of Flintoff’s long-term health comes up again and again mainly because of his huge workload. He never says no to a captain’s demand for more work, and one of the challenges for Strauss will be for him to be strong enough to tell Flintoff he is going to stop a spell. However, Strauss hasn’t been afraid to spell out how he wants to run this England side and he is keen to reassess Flintoff’s role in the bowling attack. “I just think Fred, out of all the bowlers, he’s up there with the ones batsmen don’t like facing. It’s a shame to use him as a stock bowler, bowling maidens. If we can take pressure off him with length of spells we might get more wickets out of him.”England need to take 20 wickets, something that has been problematic in recent years. Flintoff has rarely taken the hauls he deserves, weighed down by a stock-versus-shock dilemma. To ease this situation, Strauss believes it’s time the rest of the attack took some of the burden.”We have a good balance, bowlers who can bowl maidens and others who can blast wickets,” Strauss said. “If your role is a bit more defensive, it doesn’t mean you won’t take five wickets, it’s just the type of bowling role you will do.”England could also field another bowler with concerns over his ability to get through a Test if Ryan Sidebottom returns to the side. He bowled steadily over the two days England spent fielding against West Indies A and Strauss said he will place his trust in the medical staff.”There’s always a question mark because he hasn’t played,” he said. “But he came through the game really well. All the indications are that he is 100% fit and you have to go with what the medical guys say.”The final bowling attack that takes the field will have the referral system at their disposal – as will the batsmen – the first time England have experienced a system they originally refused to endorse for last year’s home series against South Africa. The ICC have tweaked the regulations, bringing the number of referrals down from three to two after feedback that the original version allowed for too many ‘hopeful’ requests.”It’s going to take some getting used to and we have had some discussions about how to go about it,” Strauss said. “If we get more decisions right then it’s a good thing, but you have to use them wisely and not undermine the umpires.”The last thing Strauss needs as he aims to forge his England team is distractions off the field, but he hasn’t been granted that luxury either. By the time play starts on the third day the IPL auction will have taken place and at least two of the team, Kevin Pietersen and Flintoff, will be a lot richer.”It’s not ideal that it’s taking place in the middle of a Test, but once you are involved everything else gets pushed to the back of your mind,” he said. “People will have an eye on it, but any big contracts will be celebrated at the end of the game.” Strauss will be hoping it’s not only a bumper pay-day that Pietersen and Flintoff are celebrating when the Test is over.

Merson on Kane failed summer move

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane should have pushed harder for a move to Manchester City this summer, according to Paul Merson.

The Lowdown: Kane stays put

Kane made his intentions clear about leaving the club he has spent his whole career with during the summer, but a move failed to materialise and he remained at Spurs for the time being.

After missing the opening day win over Manchester City, the England captain has featured in every game since but is yet to find the net or assist a goal – his longest run in the league without a goal contribution since the start of the 2015/16 season.

Spurs have lost their previous two games 3-0 to Crystal Palace and Chelsea and Kane’s decision to remain at the N17 club could be a regrettable one.

The Latest: Regrets his decision

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Arsenal midfielder Merson has said he feels Kane may be regretting his decision to remain at the club.

“If you’re Harry Kane, you’re standing up front thinking, ‘Should I have really pushed a little bit harder? Should I have?’

“At the end of the day, you’ve got to think of your future. There’s no point sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t want to be disliked’, ‘I don’t want people to think that I’m ungrateful’ and all that.

“He’s done an unbelievable job for Tottenham. He needed to move on.”

Merson continued: “He’s got to think of his future. This lad deserves to win trophies.

“He’s a phenomenal footballer and I think he should have pushed and pushed to get that move.”

The Verdict: Wasted season if he doesn’t buckle down

Any player who states their desire to leave their current club and then fails to land a move is always bound to struggle to fully commit to the cause – Roy Keane was extremely unimpressed by Kane’s body language on Sunday, and it will be a blip on an otherwise incredible career if the striker does not buckle down for the season.

Kane’s exact reasoning for staying at Tottenham is not known despite the likelihood that he was priced out of a move, with rumours previously swirling about Daniel Levy breaking a gentleman’s agreement between the two. If so, the talisman may well still be frustrated, despite his obvious passion for the club and fans.

For now though, he needs to find his shooting boots again and help bring Spurs out of this rut – there is nothing Lilywhites fans would love more than to see the England skipper firing again and proving Merson wrong in the process.

In other news, this Spurs player is set to be handed a new deal despite agreeing on an extension last summer. Find out more here.

Windies rue squandered chances

Chris Gayle doesn’t let many emotions show on the cricket field, but he must have been churning inside when Andrew Strauss’s regulation outside-edge fell from his grasp

Chris Gayle doesn’t let many emotions show on the cricket field, but he must have been churning inside when Andrew Strauss’s regulation outside-edge fell from his grasp during the first session. It happened last week in Antigua when Strauss was on 47 – here he was on 58 and seeing it like a football.By the time Daren Powell conjured the ball of the day to uproot Strauss’s middle stump, the drop had cost 84 runs and West Indies were playing catch-up. Gayle has stood at slip throughout his international career and caught his fair share in that position, but the two he has missed recently have been crucial. This wasn’t the sort of surface when batsmen need a second opportunity.Although West Indies are improving significantly, coaching them remains a frustrating experience and John Dyson could only shrug his shoulders. “I am sure Chris is disappointed that he missed that chance today but he does work at his slip catching and it is just one of those things,” he said.It was a day of misses and near-misses for West Indies. Alastair Cook escaped twice, a top-edge into the deep which Sulieman Benn, despite his huge strides, couldn’t reach at deep midwicket, then an edge between keeper and slip when he had 86. Neither cost many as Cook fell for 94, but a more crucial mistake came in the closing overs as Kevin Pietersen was missed by Jerome Taylor at fine-leg off a fired-up Fidel Edwards. The aggravation was clear on Edwards’ face.It had taken West Indies 64 overs to make the breakthrough and it came, unexpectedly, from Powell, who again struggled with his ongoing problems of wrist position and control. However, his final spell of 7-3-14-1 was the best he had bowled for some time, although Dyson admitted his overall contribution was still below par.”I think the wicket was very important for him, it was a terrific ball, he’s been working to get back that shape – away-swing to right-handers, in-swing to left-handers, and it pitched perfectly. But overall today, Daren again would be disappointed with his bowling, he bowled too many loose balls, that is the area he really needs to work on.”Dyson, though, had more praise for the rest of his attack despite them conceding 108 runs in the morning session when there was a hint of swing on offer. “I thought that in the first session two of the pace bowlers bowled particularly well, I think the wicket is an exceptional batting wicket and I am sure our batsmen took heart at just what a good surface it is to bat on. I wasn’t too displeased with the pace bowling in the first session.”England’s end-of-play total of 301 for 3 is exactly the same as it was after the first day in Antigua. Then they went onto post 566 and something similar is on the cards here, but Dyson remained confident that his side can respond in kind.”If it looks like a good wicket and feels like a good wicket, then the chances are that it is a good wicket. That is how we read it this morning, it looked a good batting wicket,” he said. “We’ve set ourselves throughout our preparation to bat as well as we can throughout the game.” West Indies have responded once to a huge England total, the chances are they will have to do it all over again to retain their series advantage.
