Crystal Palace must sign Noni Madueke

It’s been a busy summer for Crystal Palace, with new manager Patrick Vieira overseeing a significant overhaul of the first-team squad, yet there’s still plenty of work left to be done.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have addressed serious weaknesses in their defence and midfielder, bringing the likes of Marc Guehi, Joachim Andersen, Michael Olise and Conor Gallagher to Selhurst Park.

However, after failing to secure a victory or even score a goal in their opening three encounters of the new campaign, it’s clear Vieira needs to focus his attention on the final third of the pitch in the closing stages of the transfer window.

Therefore, a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke must become a priority for the capital club ahead of the August 31st deadline.

The Dutch giants were dumped out of the Champions League play-off round by Benfica on Tuesday night, reportedly lowering the Philips Stadion outfit’s asking price for the highly sort after 19-year-old and providing a boost to his potential suitors.

Patrick Vieira needs him

Palace have been one of several Premier League sides linked with a move for Madueke throughout the summer, and now PSV are out of Europe’s elite cup competition, an imminent exit could be on the cards.

Journalist and transfer expert Pedro Almeida has provided an update on the England Under-21 international’s situation, claiming that PSV have dropped their asking price to just £17.1m following their defeat to Benfica.

As a result, Palace chairman Steve Parish must swoop for Madueke, providing Vieira with the attacking quality he needs to implement his playing style in south London.

During the capital club’s first three games of the season in all competitions, Palace have created just three big chances and have missed them all, failing to score a single goal against Chelsea, Brentford and Watford.

They have also recorded just seven shots on target across 270 minutes of action, highlighting their need for a natural creator and prolific finisher. In Madueke, the Eagles could ger both in one player.

The London-born attacker contributed nine goals and eight assists in 32 appearances for the Dutch giants last term, earning praise from several plaudits, including former PSV ace Tommie van de Leegte.

“He’s fast and has the capability to trick his opponent. He brings creativity and is very explosive in his actions,” said Van de Leegte (via Goal).

And he’s started the new season in emphatic style, bagging six goals and providing one assist in nine outings in all competitions.

Therefore, a move for Madueke could be a realistic solution to Vieira’s current goalscoring conundrum at Selhurst Park, and the hierarchy must attempt to secure his services this summer.

Lei do ex.

CPFC fans react to Odsonne Edouard update

Crystal Palace look set to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard on deadline day, according to Fabrizio Romano.

As to be expected, a number of Eagles supporters have been reacting to the update on social media.

According to Romano, the 23-year-old will be in south London on Tuesday to finalise a permanent move to Selhurst Park.

The transfer expert revealed that personal terms have been agreed upon and Edouard will undergo a medical on deadline day with a final fee in the region of €18m-€19m (£15.45m-£16.3m).

Palace wanted to bring two forwards to the club before the end of the month, and it seems as if they’ll be getting at least one in a man with whom they were first linked back in 2019.

Edouard has contributed to 125 goals in his 179 appearances as a Celtic player, scoring 86 and providing 39 assists so should add plenty of firepower to Patrick Vieira’s squad.

Palace fans react

Romano shared the news regarding Palace and Edouard late on Monday evening. Here is what these Palace fans had to say in reply, with one labelling him as a ‘demon’.

An idea shot, an unholy reunion, and the nervous 99

Plays of the day for day two of the third Test between India and Australia in Delhi

I placed it there
In Chennai they call it the idea shot. Brett Lee had just been pulled by VVS Laxman in the gap between two men on the square boundary. Two balls later, Lee bowled a better bouncer, the ball rising right up to Laxman’s face. Laxman fended at it, his eyes not on the ball, and off the glove it went between Brad Haddin and Matthew Hayden, at a wide lone slip. That boundary took Laxman to 78, and a bad day for Australia got worse. The unholy reunion avoided
For most of the time that Laxman batted, Ricky Ponting stood at silly mid-on, right in front of Gautam Gambhir, the non-striker. On one occasion, Ponting turned and did a little shimmy, reminiscent of Simon Katich’s move last evening when he got into a tangle with Gambhir. This time, though, it was all in good humour. Gambhir smiled, Ponting laughed, and the umpire did not have to get between the two men.Nervous 99
Laxman got to 99 off the 159th ball he faced, but Mitchell Johnson came up with a devious plan to keep him away from the century for as long as possible. With a packed off-side field, Johnson kept bowling wide outside off, testing Laxman’s patience. He almost got the result when Laxman edged Cameron White to slip, but the ball bounced in front of the fielder. Apart from that one misjudgment Laxman kept his cool, and played out 11 dot balls before getting to his 100, via a cover-drive off White. He rolled his left arm over, after reaching the century, a gesture, according to Sunil Gavaskar doing TV commentary, meant for Zaheer Khan who had probably predicted Laxman would get the century.Inspired bowling change, but too late
Ponting hasn’t won himself many fans for his choices for bowling changes in this series. Today, he brought himself on even before Watson got a bowl. Watson had managed to contain the run-flow yesterday, but the last over he bowled was the 61st of the Indian innings. He had to wait till the 124th over to get the ball back, and he struck immediately, removing Gambhir in the first over he bowled.Simon and Aleem
When he comes in at 444 for 5, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a dangerous man. He can manufacture shots in a way that nobody on the field, or in the crowd, is safe. He pummelled a half-tracker from Katich that stayed low straight down the ground. The ball travelled so fast that Aleem Dar had no time to get out of the way. And then Super Simon dived in front of him, risked his left hand, but prevented the ball from crossing the stumps. A relieved Dar waited for Katich to get up, and shook his hand in gratitude. The Indians will hope Dar forgets the incident by the time they start appealing against Katich the batsman.

Anticipation is the thing
Hayden has taken some special slip catches this series, but with the way Gambhir and Laxman batted, even he let down his guard at slip. You cannot blame a man who stood bending for 109 overs for one catch for not expecting any other offerings. Especially off Cameron White. But that’s what happened when Gambhir played White for the turn, but the ball went straight on. Hayden was slow to react, and could not even get a hand to it.How to get to the double
Laxman was on 198 and India were waiting to declare when Virender Sehwag decided he should help hurry things up. From the dressing room he tried to catch the batsman’s attention and signalled a reverse-sweep as the shot Laxman should try to get to his landmark. Though it isn’t clear whether Laxman saw what Sehwag intended him to do, he did jump out of the crease in the next ball and lofted Michael Clarke over long-on. Double-century was reached, declaration was made, cut to a smiling and satisfied Sehwag.

Players' behaviour has improved over the years – Dravid

Rahul Dravid, the former India captain, feels that contrary to popular perception, the on-field behaviour of cricketers has improved in recent years

Rahul Dravid, the former India captain, feels that contrary to popular perception, the on-field behaviour of cricketers has improved in recent years. Dravid said a negative view had come about due to the increased reportage of on-field incidents involving players.”Players’ behaviour has not deteriorated, but improved over the years. It is only because of the media scrutiny that the feeling is that cricketers are breaking the limits,” Dravid said at a summit organised by the . “In the ’60s and ’70s players used to involve in such chit-chats but the media would not focus on that. But now at the end of the day when you go to press conference you are even asked about small things like what two players were talking in the field … which is often blown out of proportion.”Dravid did not agree with the notion that sledging was against “the spirit of the game”, while Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, said he “did not mind it as long as it was in the spirit of the game, which was hard spirit”.Dravid also shrugged off suggestions that rules on sledging were suited to non-Asian cultures. “If you live in India you deal with it [swear words] all the time. We have it all the time in our dressing rooms,” he said. “Moreover there cannot be rules about confrontations.”The media scrutiny has increased on cricketers, but Dravid felt it was perhaps a necessary evil. “We must realise that we cannot do away with it. The media has grown ten-fold since my days as a youngster. The media is having so much interest in the game, you begin to appreciate that because it’s necessary not only for the sport but also to market the players. So everything has a flip side.”It is impossible to live in the society and not get affected by it [media]. But I am sure when you look back at certain decisions, you feel in the hindsight you feel you have taken some decisions under pressure”.Dravid said senior players and cricket boards had a responsibility to guide juniors. “There is a role for senior players to educate the youngsters, especially when you see there is so many attractions for cricketers,” he said. “Agents are good if you have the right agent at the right time; it gives you peace of mind. But the boys at the age of 14-15 cannot take right decisions, so for them it’s needed to be monitored and regulated by the board.”For instance, in England, if you are to be a football agent you have got to have a certificate from the federation, since you are dealing with young boys and girls and sometimes their families are also not in a position to take right decisions.”

Palmer: Demarai Gray could be great Everton signing

Former Premier League footballer Carlton Palmer believes that Demarai Gray could turn out to be really good business for Everton.

BBC Sport reported that Gray made the move from Bayer Leverkusen to Everton for a fee of £1.7m and the winger put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

Everton signed five players in the window, including Gray, as Andros Townsend, Asmir Begovic, Andy Lonergan and Salomon Rondon joined Gray at Goodison Park, and the Toffees have started the Premier League season in fine form, already picking up seven points from a possible nine.

Gray has been in good form as well for Everton as he has two goals in the Premier League so far in just three appearances, and Palmer believes he could turn out to be a really good piece of business for the Toffees.

He told The Transfer Tavern: “What did they pay for him? Just under two million? He’s got tremendous pace, we’ll have to see we can’t say five games into the Premier League season he is the bargain of the summer, but let’s see.

“If he continues to do what he’s doing, he could turn out to be a really good bit of business by Everton.”

Everton will be hoping that both Gray and the team can keep up their current form as they look to improve on last season’s tenth-place Premier League finish under Carlo Ancelotti, prior to his departure to Real Madrid.
