Oldham lose again to put pressure on Dickov

It would be judicious to say that Oldham Athletic has endured a torrid time since their sensational victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane three weeks ago.

Despite a refusal to be beaten comfortably, the fact Oldham manager Paul Dickov has seen his side lose its last four matches must invoke a real cause for concern in the Scot, particularly when he analyses the quality (or lack thereof) of the opposition his players have lined up against.

With a severe injury crisis crippling the spine of the side Dickov consequently has been forced to field a team consisting of too much youth and inexperience and not enough composed control, particularly in central midfield. However, what should worry Oldham fans more is the lack of determination or fight on display that is needed to arrest this losing streak.

It would be easy to surrender and blame cruel luck, but that is not in Dickov’s steely nature. In his post-match comments following Oldham’s latest defeat – 3-2 against bottom-club and local rivals Rochdale – Dickov alluded to bad luck. Such allusions demonstrate weakness.

Dickov of all former footballers to ever embark on a fruitful playing career knows too well that luck plays second fiddle to the ‘pull you socks up and get stuck in’ approach which served him so well. Despite a lack of technical ability, Dickov scored goals. Why? He worked tirelessly in pursuit of them. He scrapped for success, and one of the ramifications is a little good fortune.

The Oldham players, bandaged and bruised they may be, need to quickly grasp this concept because with 11 games to play the relegation places are flashing their warning signs and they are getting brighter.

With Oldham’s games in hand and a tasty line of  struggling sides such as Scunthorpe and Yeovil, plus Rochdale and a Stevenage side which has lost its way of late since the departure of Graham Westley, to play, why then have Oldham not picked up a minimum of six points? Defending like novices to the sport is one reason in particular why. Dreadful finishing, a lack of physicality in midfield, and no obvious leader are others.

With some promising youth prospects such as David Mellor and James Tarkowski being allowed time to blossom in the wake of the injury crisis, as well as a quite extraordinary goal from Shefki Kuqi (bring Youtube up and view it – it is something special), shining a miniscule amount of light on a bleak March there are signs yet that the players can wrestle control of this free fall.

Should, as is in truth is probable, Oldham escape relegation’s grasp, which is getting ever closer, Dickov will have learnt a lot as a manager this season. He has had to manage domestic cup joys with the woes of day-to-day player management, players who have dwindled away from the training pitch to spend more time with the physio. Every manager will have to pass through depressing stages, and Dickov has to fight through his.

To Dickov’s credit, he has done tremendously well to keep his wearying ship afloat, but those waters then were choppy at worst. There has been the occasional wave to ride which Dickov certainly did (Liverpool and a run to the JPT Northern Area Final), but when the criticism starts to take aim he must instil into his demoralised squad the fierce grit that accompanies his every glare.

It shouldn’t have taken too much precedence but Hartlepool on Tuesday night is arguably their most important fixture of the season. To lose five successive games to opposition no greater in ability than themselves would be a catastrophe. To panic would tip fragile nerves, those in both fans and players, nearer to breaking point. At present, the majority of fans are still fully supportive of Dickov and are sympathetic to his cause, and at the present the players seemingly still enjoy playing under Dickov.

A victory by hook or by crook on Tuesday will ease the growing pressure. A further loss is unimaginable.

Are these really the 20 ‘Best’ foreign Premier League players of all time?

It’s now been 20 years since the Premier League system revolutionised English football, and it’s certainly been one hell of a ride. With the increased level of funding brought through the repackaging of the game, English football has left all in its wake, due to its fast paced, exciting style and ability to attract, and keep, some of the world’s top stars.

The 1990’s saw a real increase in global talent in the Premiership, with managers, such as Arsene Wenger, increasingly looking at the abilities of players from continental Europe and further afield. The successes of a choice few changed the way in which the sport was thought about in the country, propelling it from a fairly intrinsic spectacle to one where the skills and traditions of other societies and cultures were highly valued.

Although some will argue that the influx of footballers from the all corners of the planet has served to the detriment of the nation’s own team, there’s no denying that their unique abilities dragged football from the dark ages, converting to the spectacle that is now appreciated by all.

This list looks at 20 foreign players who have had a major impact on the English game, with their breath-taking skills and overall contribution to the evolution of the sport.

Gunners take a grip on third

Arsenal have opened up a five-point gap over Tottenham and Newcastle in third with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday night.

The Molineux side’s job has made more difficult by the fact that Sebastian Bassong was sent off for fouling Theo Walcott in the box within eight minutes, with Robin van Persie scoring the resulting penalty.

Walcott doubled the visitors’ advantage two minutes later, whilst Yossi Benayoun completed the scoring in the second half.

Arsene Wenger was in a positive mood after the game, and admitted that finishing in third was now a real possibility.

“I’m pleased we got the three points, a clean sheet and scored three goals,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“We wanted to start strong and we had good pace; a good, remarkable start. That got us to two nil and put them in a weak position because they were down to 10 men.

“Third is looking good but in our job, when you have my experience, you’re always cautious.

“It’s not that easy because Wolves came deep at the start, they played higher. When they were down to 10 men they played deeper and defended very well.

“You have to give them big credit because they have shown a remarkable spirit and never gave up and did fight for the ball until the last minute of the game.

“If they can keep that spirit they still have a chance to stay in the league,” he concluded.

Spurs set to be offered players to tempt them to sell

Manchester City are believed to preparing a massive bid to tempt Tottenham to sell star man Gareth Bale this summer, according to Mirror Football.

The Wales international winger has been recognised as one of the most devastating wingers in the European game, with stellar performances domestically and in the Champions League leading to the wideman receiving the PFA Player of the Year Award last term.

Barcelona have been credited with an interest in Bale, with the player’s future hanging in the balance as he waits to see where Tottenham finish in the Premier League standings this season.

The newspaper indicate that Roberto Mancini’s men will offer the White Hart Lane club £40 million plus players in exchange for the star’s services.

Emmanuel Adebayor would be one set to go to north London permanently, with Adam Johnson or Nigel De Jong other players that could be included.

City are also ready to triple Bale’s wages to well over £100,000-a-week.

Arsenal ace set to miss out on permanent move

After finding himself forced to the sidelines through injury and the emergence of Jack Wilshere in the 2010-11 Premier League season, Denilson it was time for him to leave Arsenal. Last summer he returned to his former club Sao Paulo on a year-long loan spell but with his future at the Brazilian side now in doubt, it seems the future is looking bleaker than ever for the 24-year-old.

Declaring a desire for trophies and a return to the national team as his motives behind his return to South America, Denilson originally enjoyed a lot of first team football. With highly-rated Casemiro representing Brazil in the 2011 Under-20 World Cup last summer, his first-team opportunities were unhindered. However, his relationship with the club soon turned negative as he received three red cards in his first nine appearances for the club.

He struggled to adapt to the change in pace of the game as well as the extremely different refereeing standards. The Tricolor faithful bemoaned his petulance as his first dismissal, in just his second appearance, was due to dissent in the closing stages of a match. His relationship with the supporters was soured further last October when he branded the fans of the club as “very, very annoying” for calling from then-manager Adilson Batista’s head.

With Sao Paulo sliding away from the top of the table Batista was given the sack later that month and Emerson Leao was brought in as manager. But despite a regular starting berth, Denilson still failed to impress. His lacking performances coincided with the team’s failure to qualify for the Copa Libertadores after being eliminated in the Copa Sudamericana and finishing sixth in the league.

This year has seen a positive swing in the midfielder’s performances  following a long-term injury to 21-year-old midfielder Wellington in February. Denilson has thus stepped into a more pivotal role in the side and his displays throughout the Paulista state championship improved. After finishing second in the league stage of the competition, they were unfortunate to come up against a Neymar shaped wall in the semi-final.

Yet Denilson’s form at the start of the year has begun to endear him to the fans once more. Player and club have now agreed an extension to his loan, in kind, that would see him stay into 2013. But Arsenal have been reluctant to give their approval to the move as they would prefer a permanent transfer or risk losing the player on a free when his contract expires.

The deal was originally due to expire at the end of June but with the Tricolor currently holding a 1-0 lead over Coritiba in the semi-final of the Copa do Brasil, Denilson is likely to be able to stay until next month’s final. Sao Paulo are harbouring no hope that they could even keep the 24-year-old until December, when the current Brazilian league ends.

This makes it clear that he is not wanted at Arsenal and is unlikely to find himself as part of the team again next season. The Gunners will simply offer him around and try to move him on in a permanent transfer in order to raise some funds. Denilson will only be able to stay at the Morumbi if Sao Paulo stump up the cash, but after heavy investment earlier this year it seems Denilson has not done enough to convince the club that he is a worthy signing.

Pre-season preparations underway for new-look Cobblers

Aidy Boothroyd and the Northampton Town squad flew out to Croatia on Sunday for an intense seven days of pre-season training.

Boothroyd want the whole squad to be in peak physical condition for the start of season 2012/13, he wants them to go through a rigorous training regime of up to five sessions a day in the blistering heat of Croatia. He had the players up early on Monday and they had completed two sessions by 11.30 and plans were to have another session in the afternoon and evening.

This I believe is going to be the strongest Cobblers side I have seen for some time by the time these 6 weeks of pre-season training are over, we all know it’s a marathon not a sprint and a lot can be said for the right preparation come the tail end of the season when teams start to look fatigued and seem to go off the boil.

The players will already be feeling the pace i’m sure but you expect that they have 8 weeks off and the first few weeks are as intense as they come, but they will have been doing some light work during the off season just to stay in touch with light workouts etc. I just can’t wait until the pre-season friendlies finally start so that we can have get a view of the new look squad which will hopefully be fitter than they have been for some time.

Another two new additions to the squad this week and I must admit they are two exciting players with plenty of pace. Chris Hackett has penned a 2 year deal which will take effect from 1st August and joins us from Millwall, and Joe Widdowson has signed on a 2 year deal which will also come into effect on 1st August and joins from Rochdale after being released.

Hackett brings with him a wealth of experience and has been linked with a move to Sixfields since January, Boothroyd will finally be pleased to have got his man. He brings higher level experience to the team having played for Hearts, Millwall and spent time in League One on loan last season at Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers. He is full of pace and with him on one wing and Demontagnac on the other we now have to natural wide men who will be able to deliver quality balls into the box for Bayo and Clive Platt who must be chomping at the bit to get started.

Widdowson joins from Rochdale after being released and it has been mooted that we beat Scunthorpe United to his signing. The defender will hopefully fit in well at left back as it has been a problem position for us for last few seasons, having made 34 appearances in league One last season he can’t be that bad and from what I can tell a lot of Rochdale fans are sorry to see the 23 year old leaving the club.

Two players also had their contracts mutually terminated in the past week Arron Davies and Byron Webster have left for pastures new. Davies has gone to Exeter City and Webster has rejoined that plastic cockney geezer Gary Johnson at Yeovil all the best to Webster on that move I feel he may need it.

That brings me on to Jake Robinson I believe that Jake can be a quality player for the club this coming season and am glad to see that he has come out fighting his corner after being told that he would not be in Aidy Boothroyd’s plans for next season. Fair play to Jake unlike the others he has come out and said that he is not going to give up on winning a place in the side and is ready to fight for a place in the team. He was made a lot of promises by our former manager and then was played out of position for many of the games when he first came to the club. He has goals in him I firmly believe that and I hope many of the doubters will get behind him this coming season and then hopefully we will reap the rewards and he can finally put the nightmare of last season behind him.

Team GB make Olympics quarter-finals

Team GB have securely qualified for the Olympics football quarter-finals after a 1-0 win over Uruguay on Wednesday night.

Stuart Pearce’s side ensured victory through Daniel Sturridge’s first-half goal, which complements victory over UAE and a draw with Senegal.

Pearce felt that the victory complemented improved performances throughout the competition by Great Britain.

“Today has been a fantastic day with Wiggins winning gold and that spreads right across Great Britain, it brings a feelgood factor to the Olympics and we are glad to have played our part this evening and got the result to get out of the group,” he told reporters, published in Sky Sports.

“We didn’t watch it (the rowing or the cycling) together as we had to prepare for this game but I fully expect that most of the players, and a lot of the staff, are watching other events.

“We all feel part of it after our experience in the Olympic village. We all feel part of what’s going on.

“I also have to mention the women’s team, them winning yesterday gave us a real good lift by beating Brazil.

“They have been playing a day before us and everytime they have got a good result we are trying to emulate them, which is fantastic.

“We are all under the same umbrella and we all want each other to do well.

“I thought all 18 of the players were fantastic, and it excites me to stay in the competition to play at least one more game with this group.

“We are improving game by game, our fitness levels are improving, our understanding is improving and some of the passing, especially in the first half, was outstanding,” he concluded.

Liverpool need to shell out £15m to land midfielder

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been told that he will have to pay £15 million if he wants to lure Joe Allen to Anfield, according to Mirror Football.

The Northern Irish manager is keen to raid his former club Swansea for their star midfielder, in a bid to boost the Merseyside club’s chances of finishing in the top four next term.

However, despite the fact that contact has been made between the clubs, there is thought to be a significant difference in the two sides’ valuations of Allen.

The Liberty Stadium club are pointing to the example of Jordan Henderson, who Liverpool paid £16 million for last summer, and feel that a similar fee will be necessary to convince them to part with their star.

Allen has been selected in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB squad for the Olympics this summer.

Alan Pardew dismisses Carroll return

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has ruled out a move for former Toon striker Andy Carroll as he appears to be looking for young, fresh targets before the window slams shut.

Newcastle have been linked with a move for Liverpool’s out of favour striker all summer but the shrewd mover of the transfer market, Pardew, appears to be looking elsewhere to bolster his European Newcastle outfit.

Pardew made it clear that he is looking to add youth to his experienced set up at the Sports Direct Arena ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline and he didn’t seem interested in talking about Andy Carroll at all.

“I don’t think so,” Pardew told talkSPORT. “We’re talking more of a younger player who could perhaps take the club forward.

“We’ve taken two or three younger players this season who have done very well for us. It depends if the price is right and everything fits the bill.”

Newcastle ace unsure on whether to commit to England

Newcastle new-boy Gael Bigirimana admits to having not yet decided which nation he wants to represent at international level.

The Journal report that the 18 year old is already on Stuart Pearce’s radar after an impressive Premier League debut on Tyneside.

Previously the young midfielder has been called up to the England under 19s squad, but could yet choose his country of birth, Burundi.

Bigirimana discussed the situation with the publication, “International football is a privilege and I would be honoured to play it. As long as I’m playing for one and moving forward I don’t mind what nationality I will play for.”

“England is like a second home but it is difficult for me because I have two homes. England has grown in me and I have met many fantastic people and mentors who are English. That does not mean I don’t like Burundi. That is where I was born, where I saw my first sunset.”
