Spurs linked to Haris Seferovic

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Benfica striker Haris Seferovic as Nuno Espirito Santo aims to bolster his forward line.

What’s the story?

According to The Mirror, Spurs are keen on the 29-year-old forward after deciding not to turn Carlos Vinicius’ loan spell into a permanent transfer earlier in the summer.

Seferovic has a £50 million buyout clause inserted into his contract, although it’s believed Benfica would be willing to let him depart for somewhere between £20-£25m.

Nuno’s next Jimenez

Vinicius failed to impress during his 12-month stay in north London and returned to the Eagles last month, but another star of the Portuguese giants could take his place at Spurs.

Seferovic has enjoyed a four-year spell at the Estadio da Luz, bagging 69 goals and providing 29 assists in 173 appearances, winning one league title along the way.

He caught the eye over the last few weeks with his outstanding performances for Switzerland at Euro 2020, scoring three times in five games as Vladimir Petkovic’s men reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

The powerful forward’s impressive displays clearly attracted the attention of Espirito Santo, and the former Wolves tactician could secure his next Raul Jimenez by bringing Seferovic to the capital club.

Jimenez, who also plied his trade at Benfica, was the perfect striker for Nuno’s system. The likes of Diogo Jota and Adama Traore supplied the Mexican with a constant stream of quality crosses, which he supplied the finishing touch to on many occasions.

Seferovic also relies upon quality service from his teammates to score his goals, and the similarities between the two stars mean a move to Tottenham could see another deadly duo be formed.

With Harry Kane’s future far from secure, signing a new striker is a top priority for Spurs this summer, and they could have found their ideal man.

He may not be the most glamorous or exciting name and is certainly not the long-term solution should Kane depart his boyhood club, but Seferovic is a deadly operator and is more than capable of stepping up when called upon.

Records galore as Hampshire are made to struggle

Hampshire were made to endure an elongated session in the field on the warmest day of the season so far, and will have to work very hard if they are to gain anything from this Frizzell County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston

Richard Isaacs16-May-2002Hampshire were made to endure an elongated session in the field on the warmest day of the season so far, and will have to work very hard if they are to gain anything from this Frizzell County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.Alan Richardson, the Warwickshire seam-bowler and one of the real `bunnies’ in terms of batting on the county circuit, made his own team-mates and Hampshire’s bowlers look decidedly ordinary as he and his more exalted partner, Nick Knight continued to bat … and bat.Resuming on their overnight 274-9 and their tenth wicket partnership at a meagre 16, surely the plan was to dismiss the hosts for not much more and enjoy the bright sunshine and flattening wicket.Being without Mascarenhas, who remained off the field with a hamstring tear, should not have mattered but Richardson grew in stature as he continued to keep Knight company through 300. And then 350, while in doing so, passing his previous career best of just 17.The number 11, who has struck just 82 runs in his 31 first-class innings before this was producing some measured strokes against the variety of bowlers used by Robin Smith.Knight recorded the second double century of his career, while Richardson recorded his first ever half-century. From struggling overnight, Warwickshire were building a commanding first innings total. Then the records started to fall. The highest 10th wicket partnership against Hampshire was first, passing the 140* by Rodney Ontong and Robin Hobbs at Swansea in 1981. Then the best by Warwickshire, and the highest at Edgbaston.Richardson, with 10 fours and a six from a mammoth 199 balls, was finally dismissed for 91 by the occasional leg-spin of Giles White, swiftly stumped by Nic Pothas. He had broken the highest score for Warwickshire at number 11 and the highest against Hampshire in the same position in the process. It left Knight, unbeaten and carrying his bat through the innings on 255, the second best total for Warwickshire against Hampshire. The tenth wicket partnership had added 214 – the fifth best in County Championship history and a beleaguered Hampshire, who thought they would be bat in hand by at least 11.30am strode out four hours later than envisaged. It did not get much better, in losing Derek Kenway to Melvyn Betts’ second delivery in the second over. Will Kendall was well snapped up by Dougie Brown close to the wicket for a watchful 25 and Giles White’s 120-ball stay came to an end when he leg glanced a ball from England discard Ashley Giles into Ian Bell’s midriff for 36.Skipper Robin Smith and Neil Johnson safely saw Hampshire to the close at 89-3, still wanting another 234 runs to avoid the follow-on.Giles, who took both of the later wickets in the day, will be the lynchpin in Warwickshire’s hopes, as he is already finding plenty of turn.A DAY OF BROKEN RECORDS

Aston Villa: Fans react to Burchall deal

Aston Villa have signed Bournemouth winger Ajani Burchall for a substantial compensation fee, and a number of Villa supporters have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Villa were first linked with a move for the player back in March. The likes of Arsenal, Leeds and West Ham were also credited with an interest back then, but it’s Villa who have won the race for his services.

Burchall is 16 years of age and became the third-youngest player to turn out for Bournemouth after featuring in a Championship match last season. The teenager, who is capable of playing on either flank, made a cameo appearance from the bench against Huddersfield Town back in December.

He joins England under-16 captain Josh Feeney as Aston Villa’s second academy addition this summer.

Villa fans react

Bournemouth posted the news regarding Burchall on their official Twitter page on Friday evening. Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with one describing the transfer as ‘tasty’.

VASCO

7,0
Martin Silva
Fez várias defesas importantes. É um oásis nesse time do Vasco.

4,5
Cristovão Borges
Demorou no mexer no time, teve uma escalação cautelosa. O time continua desequilibrado.

Goleiro fez pelo menos duas defesas importantes no primeiro tempo. Segurou o resultado.

5,5
Patric

Fez bom jogo.

5,5
Kieza
Poderia ter dado mais à equipe. Acabou sacado no segundo tempo.

6,5
Paulinho
Ajudou a botar correria.

5,5
Ajudou a administrar.

6,0
André Lima
Entrou para segurar a bola no ataque. Não fez grande coisa.

6,5

Player contracts for World Cup in dispute

International cricket player power has resulted in an impasse being reached over player contracts for next year’s World Cup in South Africa

Lynn McConnell10-Jun-2002International cricket player power has resulted in an impasse being reached over player contracts for next year’s World Cup in South Africa. The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, to which the recently-formed New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association is affiliated, has recommended to its members that they refuse to sign the International Cricket Council’s World Cup contracts.NZCPA chairman Heath Mills told CricInfo today that the international group was concerned with matters regarding the commercial rights of players. The issue is being dealt with by the FICA administrators where former Australian off-spinner Tim May is one of the co-chairmen of the association, and the ICC.FICA is arguing that the ICC has sold players’ rights to the Global Cricket Corporation that it was not entitled to.This could result in contracts that individual players have with different sponsors being compromised for the duration of the World Cup.The Cricketers’ Associations and the ICC are hoping to resolve the issue within the next two weeks.Players’ issues are something relatively new in New Zealand and first raised their head with the naming of the side to tour the West Indies. The announcement of the side was delayed while discussions with the Players’ Association regarding the tour contracts were resolved. At the same time, the backing for the World Cup has undergone a significant change. The Global Cricket Corporation, which won the right to market the World Cups of 2003 and 2007, and all other ICC events, including the recently-staged ICC Under-19 World Cup, and the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy, is to be fully acquired by News Corporation, the Rupert Murdoch-owned organisation.News Corp had a 5.8% share of World Sports Group, and 50% share of Global Cricket Corporation which owns the marketing and media rights. As a result News Corp will have full financial control for the World Cup.The change in ownership is reflective of the decline in value of television rights especially for major sporting events which has resulted in the collapse of several rights companies overseas.New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden had no comment to make on the issues.

West Ham insider drops Lingard update

West Ham’s chances of bringing Jesse Lingard back to the London Stadium appear to be diminishing with each passing day…

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, there are several factors going against the Irons and their attempts to secure the 28-year-old playmaker on a permanent basis.

Speaking on his ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast this week, the anonymous source dropped a big claim, saying things aren’t looking as promising on that front as they did at the end of June:

“We are after Lingard for midfield, although things don’t seem as promising as they did a couple of weeks ago.

“I think it’s going to be interesting what the manager says to Lingard because the way he’d be looking at it is that [Jadon] Sancho is more of a winger whereas Lingard’s more of an attacking midfielder.

“I think Sancho going to them is helpful for us. But it’s just whether Lingard is prepared to give up the ghost and come to West Ham or whether he’s going to fight for his place. And also how realistic Manchester United are going to be for a transfer.

“We’re obviously desperate to sign Lingard but there’s a couple of factors counting against that move a little bit.”

Bad news?

Indeed, many in East London are clearly eager to see Lingard in the claret and blue next season after he provided nine goals and five assists following his arrival on loan in January.

Speaking after their final game of the season – a win over Southampton that secured their place in Europe – Hammers boss David Moyes made his intentions very clear. He told reporters, via the Evening Standard:

“I hope Jesse’s here, we’d like to keep him, he’s done an exceptional job for us but there’s no guarantees, he’s not our player. But I hope Jesse realises we’ve been good for him as well, and that he joined a club on the up.”Lingard’s recent appearance in the England squad (prior to Euro 2020) ramped up excitement amongst the West Ham fanbase as he arrived with an Irons-branded bag, leaving many thinking he wanted to return. However, Ex now states that any move does not look as promising as it once did and even though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a big-money splash for Jadon Sancho, it appears that Lingard could be the back-up to Bruno Fernandes through the middle, rather than an option out wide. The £19.8m-rated dynamo has been at Old Trafford for two decades now, so it’s understandable that he may want to stay but he’s certainly not going to get as much game time as he would back at the Hammers, where he would be the main star of the squad.Other reports have suggested that the Manchester giants are even prepared to offer Lingard a contract extension and even though this could be to protect his transfer value as he enters the final year of his current deal, it’ll almost certainly mean Moyes will have to stump up more funds to secure him.All in all, this latest development should come as disappointing news for the fans, the manager and many more associated with the Hammers.

AND in other news, Moyes could secure West Ham their perfect Noble successor in 34-cap “special talent”…

Royals and Bears set to battle it out at the top

What a splendid dog fight, or bear fight, or battle royal is going on at the top of Division One of the Norwich Union League

Ralph Dellor10-Jul-2002What a splendid dog fight, or bear fight, or battle royal is going on at the top of Division One of the Norwich Union League. Worcestershire Royals just in front of Warwickshire Bears on run rate, and every round of fixtures could result in a change of leadership. This week the Royals travel to the south-east corner of England to meet Kent Spitfires – the reigning champions who are eight points behind the leaders but with a game in hand.Meanwhile the Bears will have to sharpen their claws and teeth as they travel to Leicester to take on the Foxes, whose attention is focused on the other end of the table. They are a single win above the relegation zone and, after their late disappointment at the top last time around, they do not want to compound their problems. There are two other matches in Division One. Glamorgan Dragons are two wins behind the leaders with two matches in hand. They travel to Trent Bridge to meet Nottinghamshire Outlaws who are desperately trying to escape from the drop zone, while the same could be said of Somerset Sabres who go to Scarborough to play Yorkshire Phoenix. The interesting thing is that while the Yorkshiremen will be looking upwards, a defeat or two could have them looking down rather sharply. It is the case with all the teams in the middle of the table. There is no match for the Surrey Lions this weekend, so there is a chance for the Gloucestershire Gladiators to take off and soar over the Lions at the top. The Gladiators take on Middlesex Crusaders at Southgate, with the hosts intent on marching up the table.Hampshire Hawks are third – four points behind the leading pair but with two games in hand. The Hawks are at Southend to meet Essex Eagles, trying to establish a pecking order among the sides that have yet to shape their season. The Hawks have played only five matches this season and the Eagles a mere four.Northamptonshire Steelbacks have only played five, which puts them in with a good chance of promotion because they are tucked in four points behind the leaders. They travel to Hove where they meet a Sussex Sharks side that has been distinctly short of bite this term. Six points from seven matches is a record that ensures they occupy the bottom place in the table.
