Arsenal fans delighted that Granit Xhaka won’t play against Wolves

Does Granit Xhaka have a future at Arsenal?

The past week indicates that he could soon be out of the door at the Emirates Stadium, despite being appointed as the club captain just a few weeks ago.

It all started when he was substituted off against Crystal Palace last Sunday with around 30 minutes left on the clock.

Watch the moment Granit Xhaka’s Arsenal career may have come to an ugly end in the video below…

An unpopular figure in North London, the Gunners supporters let their feelings about the Switzerland international be known as they booed him off the field. The 27-year-old, though, was far from impressed with the way he was treated and decided to retaliate by shouting expletives in the direction of the stands.

He has since apologised, but whether or not that will burn any bridges remains to be seen. Either way, the fans will not be able to share their thoughts of him against Wolves, with Unai Emery confirming that the former Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder will not feature.

Unsurprisingly, that has been met with delight by the Emirates faithful. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Kyle Walker-Peters’ time is surely up at Tottenham

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Kyle Walker-Peters’ time at Tottenham Hotspur is surely up.

The young right-back was not training with the Spurs first-team before their Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade, per The London Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, and appears remarkably unlikely to add to his four appearances already this term.

In total, the 22-year-old has made 23 appearances for the north London club but he has reached a crossroads now.

It was supposed to be his opportunity. Spurs sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in the summer and the logical thing to do appeared to be to promote Walker-Peters to be Serge Aurier’s understudy, particularly if they decided against buying a replacement.

Indeed, the latter came true – Spurs did not buy a right-back in the summer but Pochettino instead opted to promote Juan Foyth to the role.

When the Argentine sustained an injury, Aurier was picked to start. He has not enjoyed a good season thus far.

Per WhoScored, he has garnered a rating below six on three separate occasions. He was sent off against Southampton and conceded a penalty as Spurs lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds’ winning goal came from that spot-kick.

Even still, Walker-Peters can’t get a look in.

This is a promising right-back with a major upside. He played 90 minutes against Manchester City and was remarkably solid, winning four tackles, making one interception and two clearances. He played 90 minutes on the opening day in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa, too, but just 62 in the loss to Newcastle United.

He has not even been in the squad since in the top-flight. Walker-Peters did start the penalty shootout defeat to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup but, really, the less said about that the better.

It has become apparent, though, that Pochettino simply doesn’t trust him; that he doesn’t believe he can rely on him in the biggest games.

At the age of 22, Walker-Peters has perhaps another decade, if not more, at the very top of the game but it is not going to happen for him at Spurs.

At this point, one has to imagine he would be better off attempting to find himself a new club.

The chance doesn’t look like it is going to come his way in north London.

Leicester reaping the benefits of Jamie Vardy’s international decision

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

It’s not over yet.

That seemed to be message that Times journalist Henry Winter wanted to get across as he talked about Leicester City’s start to the season, but in particular when it came to Jamie Vardy and his international career.

What’s he said?

Speaking on the Sunday Supplement, Winter laid out precisely why Vardy has been able to keep the levels of production going despite ticking into this 30s, but how that might cause a bit of a problem going forward:

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens next summer. If he’s carrying on playing like this, if he’s top of the scoring charts, whether [Gareth] Southgate goes back to him. One of the reasons why he is having this longevity, is that he is having international breaks free and he can just recharge his batteries.”

Going all out

Winter raises a very interesting point in all this. Vardy is clearly getting some benefits from all the rest he is getting from not playing for his country, and as a result, it’s left him firing on pretty much all cylinders to help Leicester move up the table, currently sitting as the league’s top scorer.

Gareth Southgate has said in the past that the chance for Vardy to play for England has not totally disappeared for the 32-year-old, but would it really be beneficial for him to spend those couple of months with England for the European Championships?

Any rest that he would be earning this season would be lost if he were to then find himself playing for the Three Lions over the summer, which could then lead to a ‘burnout’ at the start of the next campaign and a slow start for the Foxes.

Which is why Vardy would really help a lot of people out if he came out and reiterated his stance on his international situation, just so everyone knows what the plan is and how to deal with it. That way people like Brendan Rodgers will know if he has to be careful with how he uses Vardy throughout the season, or let him loose and keep terrorising defences the way he has been so far.

Spurs can’t sack Pochettino before January transfer window

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Uncertainty hangs over Tottenham Hotspur as they prepare to face West Ham United this weekend.

A report from The Daily Telegraph prior to the international break claimed that Mauricio Pochettino could be sacked if Spurs lose at the London Stadium.

But it doesn’t seem to make sense, to make that kind of change at this point in the season.

A separate Football.London report has claimed that there is no sense of “impending change” at Spurs as they prepare for this weekend’s derby.

And with the January transfer window looming that seems like the more accurate of the two.

Indeed, whenever there is upheaval at a managerial level, a club suffers. There is a period of uncertainty over who will take over and there are also questions asked of the playing staff.

Will the new manager take to the old manager’s signings? Is he likely to implement a completely new style of play? Will he want to splash the cash himself?

The issue with this at Spurs is that they are in a phase of rebuilding. Three first-team players – Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon – were signed in the summer but one feels that January could be a perfect time for them to continue that and attempt to bring in one or two more.

That is not to mention the problems that Pochettino is currently being forced to deal with in terms of contracts, with replacements likely to be needed for Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen. The trio’s contracts expire this summer.

Thus, one has to feel that Pochettino is the man best placed to steer Spurs through this period, at least until after the January window.

If the form turns around and he is backed, then everything looks rosy.

If not, if Spurs are still in mid-table come the turn of the year, then they will have an excuse to spend.

Either way, Pochettino is the man who should be allowed to shape this squad as he wants and to identify the new players that are required.

Bringing in a new boss after this weekend would be madness and could lead to a high turnover of players this January.

It simply isn’t how Spurs should operate.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to reports Mourinho could help them sell the club

Some big changes are undoubtedly heading Tottenham Hotspur’s way in the not so distant future.

After all, appointing Jose Mourinho of all people as your new head coach is bound to stir up the pot just a little bit, to say the least.

But interestingly enough, the appointment of the Special One might bring even bigger changes to the club as a whole and not just in the way the play.

According to an exclusive report coming from ESPN, Mourinho’s arrival could make Tottenham Hotspur a much more attractive club for potential investors and Spurs actually may have appointed the Portuguese coach with exactly that in mind.

Upon hearing this update, however, loads of Spurs fans were actually happy and would sell the club immediately, as it seems.

Some even labelled this as “best news ever” and want the deal to go through as soon as possible.

Everton: AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek could be key to solving Toffees’ forward problem

Krzysztof Piatek first turned the heads of Europe’s top clubs when he signed for Genoa in the summer of 2018, going on to enjoy a prolific six-month spell with the club where he bagged 13 goals in just 19 outings before signing for AC Milan, and now a report from Calciomercato (via This is Futbol) claims Everton could be in the hunt for his signature.

Following on from that sensational run of form, a period that prompted Italian giants AC Milan to come calling with a £30.9m transfer, Piatek only increased his value on one of the biggest stages in Europe – netting a further nine goals over the second half of the season for the Rossoneri.

The Polish international, however, has found life tricky at the start of a brand new campaign at the San Siro – with Piatek’s form wavering slightly having bagged just three goals so far in 2019/20.

A similar figure across the continent, currently plying his trade in the Premier League for Everton, is none other than summer signing Moise Kean – who also had a prolific spell of goalscoring form last season with Juventus.

Unlike Piatek, the Italian forward is still yet to get off the mark for his new club – with issues such as turning up late to a team meeting and exhibiting a drop in confidence seemingly contributing towards some sections of the media already branding him a flop.

The same cannot be said of his counterpart, however, with Piatek already proving he can do the business consistently for a huge side last season and in glimpses this campaign.

Although there are many parallels to be drawn from these two forwards’ starts to the season, it seems like the Pole’s playing style and overall attributes essentially match with what Everton are currently lacking.

Namely, a composed goalscoring touch, athleticism, instinct, great running in-behind and presence – assets that Piatek seemingly has in abundance.

On top of that, the forward is also an ice-cool penalty taker – something that the Toffees have been lacking for quite some time judging by Gylfi Sigurdsson’s recent torrid record from the spot – missing five last season alone.

In comparison, the Milan striker has bagged 15 out of his last 17 penalties – not actually missing one since May 2018 before he moved to Serie A.

When you watch Piatek play, there is a certain calmness and assurance about him, and not just from the spot, with evidence pointing towards the fact that he could be a worthy investment from Everton’s perspective.
