Rangers would be glad to get any money for Eros Grezda, says Jackie McNamara

[ad_pod ]

Pundit Jackie McNamara has told Football Insider he believes Rangers would be happy getting anything close to their original fee for Eros Grezda.

What’s the story?

McNamara thinks Steven Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen would be glad to get a fee even remotely close to the £1.8m they paid for the Albanian, never mind make a profit.

Gerrard brought the winger to the club last August from Osijek but he’s been far from a hit at Ibrox in the past year.

The 24-year-old played just 17 times in his debut season for the Light Blues, contributing to a measly three goals. This disappointing form has lead to links away from Ibrox as the club look to ship out the deadwood during a busy summer.

And McNamara says the Gers would be doing well to recoup their initial outlay on the winger, stating: “There’s a player that we’ve not really seen much of since he’s been there. I think if they can get anywhere near their money back they’ll be happy with that.”

Time to go

The former Scotland international’s comments come amid rumours that two Ligue 1 sides are looking to end Grezda’s horror spell at the Gers. According to Soccerlink.fr, the winger is a target for Dijon and The Scottish Sun reported that French top-flight counterparts Brest have joined the race for his services.

With a new bumper TV deal set to kick in next season, we might begin to see more French clubs start to splash the cash soon. But even with all the money in the world, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone with the lack of sense to give Rangers anything close to what they paid for the former Osijek wide man – two goals and one assist in a relatively weak division is truly shocking for an attacking player.

Also, given he’s unlikely to feature at all this season for Rangers with four new wingers arriving this summer, you’d imagine the club will just want him off the wage bill, and that desperation to flog him will hardly do his ever-decreasing value any favours.

McNamara is almost certainly right about Grezda’s potential fee, but the one crumb of comfort for Gerrard is that at least there is interest in his flop.

Aston Villa revisiting Neal Maupay could ease the pressure on Wesley

[ad_pod ]This article is part ofÂFootball FanCast’sÂTransfer FocusÂseries, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, Aston Villa’s transfer activity in this window is far from done with deadline day rapidly approaching as it is thought the club could revisit a previous target in Brentford’s Neal Maupay.

What’s the word?

Villa boss Dean Smith has signed no fewer than 12 new players for a combined fee totalling well over £120m – and it appears their business isn’t over yet as Dorsett reports they still have a number of targets in mind.

One of which is Maupay, who Smith knows all too well having been the man to bring the Frenchman to England in the summer of 2017.

The 22-year-old has made 95 appearances at Griffin Park, scoring 41 goals as well as laying on 14 assists after joining from Saint-Etienne in a £1.6m transfer.

Rumours linking Villa to the Brentford ace have been circulating all summer with it likely to rumble on until deadline day on Thursday.

It is thought that Brentford would be after £20m for their goal-laden striker.

The club have already broken their record transfer fee by bringing Wesley Moraes to Villa Park from Club Brugge for a fee of £22m.

Can the pressure be eased on Wesley?

Villa could do with adding another option up front before the start of the Premier League season.

Aside from Wesley, their attacking fortunes lie in the hands of Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan. The former has given the club a decent return in the Championship, ignoring the 2017-18 campaign where he was often absent through injury.

He’s scored 47 goals in 139 appearances in the second division and at the age of 29, that may well be his level.

Hogan, on the other hand, struggled to break into Villa’s squad – making just six substitute appearances – and was sent out on loan to promotion winners Sheffield United, where he also failed to get much game time, starting just five matches.

Villa will need an additional striker to either play back-up to Wesley or partner him up top next season and Maupay seems like an ideal candidate.

Last season, he bagged one less than Villa’s loan star Tammy Abraham with 25 goals in the Championship.

It will be Wesley’s first season playing in England let alone the Premier League and if you add to that the weight of being the club’s record transfer, there will certainly be a lot of pressure on the young 22-year-old.

Whether he can handle it or not remains to be seen but his transition can be aided by bringing in someone of Maupay’s quality.

He may lack Premier League experience too but he has been in England for two years now and has shown that he’s capable of adapting to new conditions.

In his first season at Brentford, he scored 13 goals in 46 appearances which was also his first venture outside of his home country.

The former France U21 international is a viable option in his own right too. The aforementioned goals return only goes some way in proving that.

At 5 foot 7, he would be a nice compliment to the 6 foot 3 Wesley or even a ‘plan B’ option.

Manchester United recouping big money for Romelu Lukaku is great business

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter for a fee in the region of £73m.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks had seen both Inter and Juventus fight tooth and nail to secure Lukaku’s signature before the end of the transfer window, but Antonio Conte’s side have managed to get a deal done.

As confirmed by United’s official club website, Lukaku will be heading to Inter after only arriving from fellow Premier League side Everton back in the summer of 2017.

[ad_pod ]

That deal saw the Belgian arrive at Old Trafford for an initial £75m, and so United’s sale of the 26-year-old this summer is certainly something worthy of appreciation.

Great business

Whilst the footballing consequences of letting Lukaku go are potentially severe – the club are left with very few recognised central striking options – the business side of it certainly makes sense. Despite the Belgium international generally being a prolific goal-scorer in English football, his poor record against the big sides certainly counted against him. Could he really be considered in the same league as a Sergio Aguero or a Harry Kane?

So, getting almost all of the money back from when he first arrived is a real coup. The Red Devils may not have had time to reinvest that money in a possible replacement or a position elsewhere, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer kitty certainly takes a bit of a boost for the upcoming windows.

Even despite the ridiculous prices of players in the modern market, receiving a reported £73m for a striker who netted just 15 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions last season is good going, especially considering the lack of confidence and ill-feeling surrounding Lukaku at Old Trafford.

They may have gotten many other things wrong in the transfer window this summer, but getting a sizeable fee for an under-performing Lukaku will surely go down as a piece of great business – at least on the financial side of things.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino slams early transfer window deadline

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by Sky Sports, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted closing the transfer window early in the Premier League is a “massive mistake”.

What did he say?

Despite the deadline in English football closing on August 8, clubs in some of the other major European leagues still have the opportunity to sign players from the Premier League.

Spurs in particular could lose Denmark international Christian Eriksen to a move abroad, and would then not be able to sign a replacement for the 27-year-old until January at the earliest. Now, Pochettino has bemoaned the difference and urged the “problem” to be fixed as soon as possible.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “I wasn’t in agreement (with the decision) but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs. But I think he (Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy) and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake. I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

“We need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League. Champions League teams can create a problem for a team like us and it’s so clear that I cannot be happy as a coach that in the last three weeks clubs from Europe can unsettle your team.

“For me it’s not common sense and we need to go back quick, hope they have a good conversation at the Premier League and go back quickly (to how it was).”

Uncertainty

One of the biggest gripes Premier League managers will have with the current system is the uncertainty it naturally creates. Whilst players can’t be sold to other clubs domestically, they can be picked off by European sides. It is why the likes of Eriksen, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, amongst others, continue to be linked with moves away.

In Spurs’ case, having the future of one of their key men up in the air is an unnecessary distraction. The north London side are looking to mount a challenge on multiple fronts this season, but have already begun the campaign with the prospect of Eriksen’s departure looming over their shoulders.

How can the manager and the player involved possibly remain focused on the task at hand? As Pochettino suggests, the Premier League’s early deadline experiment has failed and it’s already time it ends.

Manchester City star Fernandinho still has plenty to offer despite Rodri’s impressive start

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Since Sheikh Mansour’s takeover, Manchester City have been blessed with some truly extraordinary players. The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany, amongst others, have rightly taken the limelight at the Etihad. But one man who has arguably had just as big of an influence since his arrival, is Fernandinho.

The Brazil international joined City from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk and has been a permanent fixture in the side’s midfield since. The 34-year-old has played under numerous different managers at the Etihad, but has been an integral part of every City team. Others have come and gone, but Fernandinho has been an ever-present.

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But with just nine months left on his contract, The Sun claim the Brazilian is “ready to wait” until later in the campaign to discuss a new deal. Whilst the report suggests both City and Fernandinho have a “strong relationship”, surely the Etihad side must look to get that piece of business done as soon as possible?

The big-money arrival of Rodri, and his impressive start to the campaign so far, has almost shunted Fernandinho to the shadows. But, despite the presence of City’s big-money signing, the 34-year-old still has plenty left to offer.

Indeed, speaking in November 2017, Pep Guardiola remarked: “I think Fernandinho, right now, is one of the three best holding midfielders in the world. He gives us a lot, with the ball and without the ball, in terms of many things we need to compete.

“I know the fans like the guys who score goals, but all managers know the value of this kind of player. Maybe the media don’t talk too much about how important they are.”

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

And that perhaps is the biggest reason why City should avoid overlooking Fernandinho this season and potentially even after that. He remains one of the side’s best ball-winning midfielders, and averaged 2 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Premier League last season, so it’s not as if Guardiola’s comments have expired.

As Rodri looks to settle into his first campaign in English footballer, Guardiola could do a lot worse than turning to an old hand to steer the side through a transition year for the Spain star.

Leicester’s James Maddison can be the difference for England, says Paul Gascoigne

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Tottenham legend Paul Gascoigne has thrown his support behind Leicester star James Maddison ahead of England’s European 2020 Championship qualifiers next week.

What’s he said?

The 22-year-old dazzled in midfield for the Foxes last season, and his performances already this campaign look to be continuing that trend.

Maddison scored seven and laid on the same number of assists during the 2018/19 season, and thus far he has already picked up two assists in just three Premier League matches in the new term, per WhoScored.

Watch Leicester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

This summer saw him score his first goal for England’s Young Lions during the European U21 Championships.

Gareth Southgate has announced that the rising star has been included in their squad for next week’s qualifiers and even though he’s earned this honour before back in 2018, this time he should undoubtedly be in line for his debut.

Speaking to the Mirror, Gascoigne believes Maddison can take England forward, he said:

“He wants to be on the ball, he is creative, he takes people on. I’ve seen him do that often for Leicester when I’ve been watching games.

“There are too many robots, definitely, because there is so much pressure on players and managers not to lose the game.

“Gareth Southgate has done a great job, got them playing great football.

“They just miss that something creative in the middle, the willingness to have a go at someone.”

Maddison can answer Gazza’s call

The 5 foot 9 attacking midfielder was one of the most influential players in the Premier League last season – recording a total of 100 key passes, more than any other player in the top-flight.

That is a figure that bettered Eden Hazard (98), Christian Eriksen (73) and any of Manchester City’s title-winning squad with David Silva (73) recording the most for them, per WhoScored.

The next highest England player in the list was Raheem Sterling with 66 key passes last season.

One player he certainly should be above in the squad is Jesse Lingard, who has been particularly poor so far this term – he has not scored or assisted a goal and is averaging a rating of just 6.51.

On this evidence, Maddison should be able to cement his place amongst Southgate’s squad in time for next summer’s European Championship.
