Newcastle United: Fans hail polarising figure Joelinton after Manchester United display

Having only scored one goal so far since signing for Newcastle United last summer, a lot of supporters previously targeted Joelinton as a real weakness to Steve Bruce’s side – but after his performance in the 4-1 loss at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, they’ve started to lighten the criticism.

The Brazilian moved to Tyneside for a club record-breaking £40 million fee, bringing with him Champions League experience and versatility – having played on the left-flank and upfront during his time at Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.

However, you have to cast your mind back to August for his last Premier League goal, coming in a 1-0 away win at Spurs – with the forward struggling to find the net during his debut season so far.

The run without a goal didn’t break in his last outing either, with his side eventually succumbing to a heavy defeat at Man United, but he did show glimpses of true quality – most notably his build up play for Dwight Gayle who blazed a glorious chance early in the game.

As a result, supporters have praised Joelinton for his efforts – here’s what they had to say.

Rangers: Fans pleased with Kyle Semple transfer rumour

According to Rangers-focused Twitter channel @4ladshadadream, the Ibrox club have signed a teenage defender with international recognition.

On Tuesday evening, @4ladshadadream tweeted that Rangers had completed the signing of 15-year-old defender Kyle Semple from Motherwell for a five-figure sum.

According to @4ladshadadream, the teenager remains eligible for under-16 level but has been playing at the under-18 grade due to his ability, adding that he is “seen as a major signing at that level and definitely one to watch for the future”.

Semple, who turns 16 next month, has been capped six times by Scotland’s under-16 side, who he helped to a 4-0 victory over their Republic of Ireland counterparts last October. [via scottishfa.co.uk]

While @4ladshadadream tweeted that Rangers had completed the signing of the teenage defender, there has been no confirmation of the transfer on the club’s official website rangers.co.uk as of yet, although that hasn’t stopped these ‘Gers fans on Twitter from expressing their pleasure at the rumoured deal:

Everton: Fans slam ‘preposterous’ Kenwright tale about Carlo Ancelotti

According to quotes from the Liverpool Echo [19:38], Everton chairman Bill Kenwright claimed at the club’s general meeting on Tuesday evening that manager Carlo Ancelotti phoned him after the Italian took charge of his first match at Goodison Park and claimed he would ‘never experience anything like that’ walking on to a football pitch – with supporters having their reservations over the ‘preposterous’ story.

Ancelotti, who took charge of the club just before Christmas, replacing the previously sacked Marco Silva, won his first game 1-0 at home to Burnley courtesy of a dramatic late header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin – with the former AC Milan boss allegedly phoning Kenwright in praise over the atmosphere.

“He told me he’d spoken to Carlo, and he instantly said it sounded great. We knew he wanted to come to Everton. “I’m sure he won’t mind me saying he was knocked out by his first arrival at Goodison Park.

“He phoned me after the next game and said he’d never experience anything like that when walking onto a football pitch.

While this story doesn’t seem too far fetched, some Toffees supporters have their reservations given the chairman’s past antics, taking to Twitter and dismissing the tale entirely. Since taking charge, Ancelotti has won three out of his last four league matches, potentially being the start of an uphill climb despite a dramatic fall-out following the FA Cup loss to Liverpool.

Here’s what fans had to say about Kenwright’s story below.

Everton fans react to transfer link with Krzysztof Piatek

Some Everton fans have been reacting on Twitter after the printed edition of The Sunday Mirror (January 19, page 66) reported that the Toffees have joined the race to sign AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek.

The report says that the Merseyside outfit could battle with the likes of Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur for the 24-year-old, who has been an unused substitute in the Serie A club’s previous two league matches following the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the San Siro.

Everton have already loaned out Cenk Tosun to Palace during the current transfer window, which has certainly left them a little short of depth in the centre-forward position – Carlo Ancelotti now has Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Moise Kean and Oumar Niasse to pick from.

Of the latter duo, the former is yet to score in 21 appearances for the club, while Niasse is reportedly up for sale and surplus to requirements.

Piatek scored 30 goals in 42 outings for Genoa and Milan last term, but that prolific touch has deserted him in 2019/20 and he only has five in 19, with just two of those coming since October 20.

His record across the previous 18 months was certainly a big talk point among supporters, with one suggesting that Ancelotti could work his magic on the Poland international if he did join.

Other supporters replied to a tweet about the transfer interest from The USM Toffees Blues account.

One suggested that a potential deal for Piatek could see Kean go the other way back to Italy after a disappointing six months in England.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

That would certainly be a surprise, but perhaps a loan move could do him the world of good as he continues to struggle to get to grips with life in the Premier League.

One supporter seemingly wasn’t happy with a link to a striker, saying that the club need midfielders as a priority.

That is an understandable view given the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fabian Delph haven’t exactly shone in the middle of the park in recent weeks, with the former duo picking up 3/10 and 2/10 ratings respectively from The Liverpool Echo in the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool.

However, with Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Andre Gomes back in training after injury, perhaps the club are willing to wait on them and then weigh up their options in the summer given the likes of Tom Davies and Mason Holgate can also play there.

Arsenal’s Francis Cagigao an unsung hero

When Sven Mislintat departed his role as Head of Recruitment in the summer, it left behind a gaping hole in Arsenal’s scouting network.

This was a man responsible for finding Ousmane Dembele, Mats Hummels and Arsenal’s very own Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang when he was at Dortmund.

His legacy in north London, however, was far from the one he achieved in Dortmund. Mislintat left in controversial circumstances, falling out with the hierarchy after failing to discover the level of player that had made him so renowned in Germany.

Yet, Arsenal have their own version, and he’s achieved more than Mislintat ever did in English football.

The man in question is Francis Cagigao. Born in London to Galician parents, the 50-year-old is an FA Youth Cup winner with the club, spending much of his playing career in Spain.

Previously heading up Arsenal’s recruitment network in that district of Europe, he’s now Head of International Scouting at the Gunners, taking on a role that was richly deserved for discovering many of their great players of the modern era.

He’s regularly brought players from Spain over to England and was pivotal in recruiting Jose Antonio Reyes, Cesc Fabregas and Santi Cazorla for the Londoners. Cagigao was also the man to discover a certain Robin van Persie.

But it’s the two men who played such a pivotal role in Arsenal’s draw against Chelsea that Mikel Arteta has his head scout to thank for.

Cagigao brought Hector Bellerin to the Gunners as a teenager in 2011 while his most recent discovery is helping to lead an Arsenal revolution.

Arsenal’s first scorer at Stamford Bridge was Gabriel Martinelli. An understated signing when he arrived, he’s now scored ten times in just 21 appearances this term.

The lengthy dossiers and video analysis that Cagigao compiled was all worth it, particularly after beating Barcelona and Manchester United to his signature.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Arsenal’s history in the January transfer window?

Martinelli feels like a generational talent, someone who has the ability to not only beat his man but finish clinically. His goal against the Blues was fine evidence of that, darting away from the Chelsea defence before taking his time to slot the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Just 18 years of age, the Brazilian is now proving to be a pivotal cog in the Arsenal machine, just as Fabregas and van Persie were. There was no Aubameyang on Tuesday but that didn’t matter as the teenager grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck for his team.

Martinelli’s mentality is first class and it’s a testament to Arsenal’s head scouting honcho that he was able to find someone with both technical and mental attributes in abundance.

Speaking after the draw at Stamford Bridge, Bellerin said of his goalscoring teammate: “A lot of people talk about his talent, but what people don’t see is that Gabi is a professional.

“He turns up early every day. He does all the stuff and everything anyone asks him to do. He is the first player to press and the last player to leave everything on the pitch.”

Now at the club for well over a decade, Cagigao is rarely seen in the public eye but he’s found a gem in Arsenal’s number 35. His work and the relationship he gains with the likes of Raul Sanllehi, Edu and Arteta will now be pivotal if the Islington club are to rediscover their former glories.

A true unsung hero behind the scenes, the experienced recruiter should be looking to establish himself as one of the key men in Arsenal’s revolution. After all, he has the necessary qualities.

Meanwhile, one of Arsenal’s current players has been compared to none other than Yaya Sanogo…

Crystal Palace fans react as Southampton ‘set to sign’ Kyle Walker-Peters

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Sun revealed that Kyle Walker-Peters is close to signing for Southampton.

The Tottenham right-back had a choice between Crystal Palace and Southampton, with Roy Hodgson openly saying that Sporting Director Dougie Freedman was working hard on a deal and he is “optimistic and hopeful” that he can bring the player to Selhurst Park.

However, The Sun’s exclusive report states that the Saints are all set to land the England U21 international ahead of the south Londoners on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Walker-Peters has fallen well out of favour at Spurs since the arrival of Jose Mourinho, failing to play a single minute of Premier League action since the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss stepped into the hotseat – truth be told, the 22-year-old only made three Premier League appearances under Mauricio Pochettino this term before he was sacked.

Let’s see how the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

To kick off the reaction, these two fans had something to say on the matter.

@cpfc_sean – who holds the username General Tomkins – said it was “typical” that the Eagles have lost out in a transfer battle.

Sam, however, said that he was “not bothered” as long as Nathan Ferguson signs – The Evening Standard revealed on Monday that Palace are targeting a late swoop to sign the West Brom prospect.

Elsewhere, these two fans were in the mood to see key figures leave the club following the Walker-Peters news.

Calum said that “this is the most Palace thing ever” and that if the Eagles lose out to Southampton then “we may as well sack Dougie”.

Also, Guy simply tagged Steve Parish in a tweet calling for him to “resign” after The Sun’s update – harsh.

Lastly, sarcasm was the flavour of the day here.

Jordan said that he was “shocked” after hearing the news – we don’t think he truly was – while ‘Selhurst Exile’ said that “Hodgson will be thrilled I’m sure”.

For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums?

Seeing as the former England manager openly said he was “hopeful” of signing Walker-Peters, we don’t think he will be.

Tottenham fans react to report linking them with a move for Gareth Bale

Tottenham have had a successful window with the additions of Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn, as well as making Giovani Lo Celso’s stay in North London permanent.

However, the Daily Mail report that their business doesn’t stop there, and former player Gareth Bale is being targeted in a move that would likely surprise a lot of Spurs fans.

It is believed that Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing him back to the club, and Real Madrid are said to be open to letting the winger go for a small fee, though he would have to take a huge wage cut from his current salary of £600,000 a week.

The return of a player who was brilliant towards the end of his spell for Spurs, as evidenced by his £85m move, would likely greatly excite supporters, and some have expressed their desire for his return.

The idea that he could be available for “next to nothing”,  according to the Daily Mail, means there could be an outside chance of signing the 30-year-old, though he would likely need a lot of persuading.

Some Tottenham fans have called on Daniel Levy to do exactly that, and if he was to pull it off he would likely change the minds of the minority of supporters who are against him.

However, the more realistic individuals amongst the fanbase have shared their belief that there is little chance of the transfer occurring, with Bale’s astronomical wages far beyond what the club can afford.

Did Spurs enjoy a good transfer window?

Did Tottenham Hotspur manage to enjoy a good transfer window in the end?

One has to feel that, after their win over Manchester City, they nailed one thing: The signing of Steven Bergwijn.

Daniel Levy, of course, had a challenge to rise to in this window: Jose Mourinho, the club’s manager, had never managed the side throughout a single transfer market and, yet, he appears to have been appeased in at least two areas.

The signing of Bergwijn was Spurs seizing an opportunity presented to them; they were first linked with him on a Sunday and, in a matter of days, he had signed on the dotted line. This was a quick deal that was completed rapidly.

The other signing saw Gedson Fernandes arrive on a loan deal from Benfica and nobody really knows what he is going to be; at this point, he is a set of attributes and is just 21, having played just seven times in Liga NOS in Portugal this term prior to his move. Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move was made permanent, too.

Yet Mourinho surely found the same frustrations as Mauricio Pochettino; Levy was unable to strengthen the club’s forward line and also seemed to ignore the glaring deficiencies in defence and in defensive midfield.

Pochettino, of course, was sacked in November and there are a number of stories of players that slipped through Spurs’ fingers during the reign of the Argentine: Jack Grealish could have arrived from Aston Villa but Levy dragged his heels on the deal while there was also a refusal to pay up for Sadio Mane, then at Southampton, prior to his move to Liverpool.

Mourinho has already aired his grievances about the club’s failure to sign a striker; even after the win over City, he revealed that they can only play a certain way – on the counter-attack – because of the lack of a No.9.

Spurs had hoped, per sources, to sign Olivier Giroud from Chelsea in the final week of the transfer window but the deal could not be completed because the Blues failed to sign a forward to replace him. There is surely frustration, however, in north London, at Giroud’s situation. He did not even feature on the bench as Frank Lampard’s side drew 2-2 with Leicester City at the weekend.

A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

There was also interest in Krzysztof Piatek and Willian Jose; sources say that the former was the subject of a loan bid but that Milan were repeatedly clear that they needed to sell him. They eventually did just that, as he moved to Hertha Berlin. Jose, by comparison, has said that he felt it was a “big opportunity” to move to Spurs but Levy was unable to agree a deal with Sociedad.

It is a familiar failing. In defensive midfield, they only have Eric Dier, while both Danny Rose and Kyle Walker-Peters were allowed to leave on loan in January and were not at all replaced.

And so, one has to feel that Pochettino will have been watching these events unfold with something of a wry smile on his face.

Mourinho has had some areas strengthened – Bergwijn looks to be an excellent signing after scoring a brilliant volley against City – but there are still some glaring deficiencies in the squad.

It is hard to judge the talent at Mourinho’s disposal at this point, of course, because the season is not yet over and Spurs are fifth in the Premier League, just four points off the top four.

One has to feel, though, that they could have been boosted by some further buys in January – it remains to be seen how much those possible acquisitions, such as Giroud, will be missed.

Meanwhile, loads of Spurs fans love one Mourinho moment!

West Brom fans drool over Matheus Pereira after Reading win

West Brom moved six points clear at the top of the Championship table on Wednesday night as they clinched their third successive victory.

The Baggies came from behind to defeat Reading 2-1 and fans have been left in awe over the performance of one midfielder in particular.

Kyle Bartley bizarrely handled the ball inside the area to hand the home side an early penalty before Matheus Pereira equalised with a fine strike in the 26th minute.

Albion’s centre-back went from zero to hero as he headed home the winner four minutes after the break, but it was the Brazilian who drew all the plaudits.

Here’s what has been said…

There were never-ending superlatives used to describe the 23-year-old’s display, ranging from “magic” to “class” to even being the “star’ of the team.

One supporter couldn’t stop smiling about Pereira as he labelled him a “fantastic player” who appears to be just as happy to be at the club.

As he is only on loan at the Hawthorns for the time being – a move that is set to be made permanent within the next few appearances – some have asked the club to sign him up along with his fellow loanees.

Following the match, footage emerged of Pereira doing an interview alongside fellow midfielder Filip Krovinovic, which has left fans going even more crazy about their playmaker.

“Different gravy” and “top class” were just two phrases used whilst one fan claimed the pair deserved Premier League football and another compared them to Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez from last season.

West Brom will not be signing trialist Martin Olsson

West Brom will not be making any further additions after Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi provided a fresh update on the situation surrounding one of their trialists.

What’s he said?

Last month, the Baggies took on former Premier League left-back Martin Olsson for a trial as Slaven Bilic looked to bolster his backline.

The Croatian even extended his stay at the Hawthorns into a further week as he mulled over the 48-time Swedish international.

But it has now been revealed that he’s no longer at the club and will not be joining on a permanent basis.

Olsson has been without a club since the summer following his release from Championship rivals Swansea City, and he’s not featured competitively in 14 months

Masi tweeted on Monday:

Changing dynamics

Circumstances changed quite quickly over the course of the January transfer window, making a move for Olsson pretty much redundant.

Young defender Nathan Ferguson was set to join top-flight outfit Crystal Palace before his move fell through on Deadline Day just as Bilic opted to sign Cardiff City full-back Lee Peltier on a free transfer.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Kieran Gibbs is also edging closer to a return at left-back with Conor Townsend deputising in his absence, so the need for another addition in the role soon diminished.

When the news broke about Olsson being on trial at the Hawthorns, former Villa and Spurs striker Darren Bent claimed it would be a “good signing” before going on to praise the 31-year-old, he said to Football Insider:

[Olsson] knows what it takes, you need players like that, it’s great having all these young players with all the energy in the world who work hard, but at the same time, you need experience. Olsson has always done well, wherever he has been, solid character and he’s good to have in the dressing room, so I think that will be a really good signing.”

West Brom have been coping as it is as they currently hold a four-point lead at the top of the Championship table with fellow January additions like Callum Robinson and Kamil Grosicki already making an impact whilst Peltier is yet to feature.
