HYS: Should Salah be dropped from Liverpool lineup?

Liverpool have a difficult week ahead as they have Champions League and Premier League tasks to tackle.

On Wednesday, the Merseyside outfit will go head to head with Serie A side Napoli in their second Group C match.

Jurgen Klopp’s side already have three points having earned a 3-2 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in an exciting clash at Anfield earlier this month.

Four days later, the Merseyside outfit will take on reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on home soil.

It is a mouth-watering tie as both clubs share the same number of points, but City are currently at the top of the table with a superior goal difference.

Klopp will need his best XI for these matches, but surprisingly, Mohamed Salah may not be regarded in that category based on current form.

The attacker, who according to sillyseason.com earns £200,000 per week, has scored three goals in nine outings in all competitions but he is not yet reaching the high standards expected of him.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”301458″ player=”12034″ title=”The Problem With Paul Pogba”]

During Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Salah was hauled off by Klopp in the second half.

The Egyptian international lacked that clinical touch in the final third and was replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri.

Dropping Salah would be a controversial decision from Klopp, but would some time away from the spotlight help him in the long run?

Let us know by voting below.

QPR boss Steve McClaren will be ready to sever ties with these players

QPR slumped to a fairly embarrassing League Cup loss yesterday, as they were bullied by League One outfit Blackpool.

In the wake of that defeat, manager Steve McClaren asserted that a few players proved that they are not QPR material, and are unlikely to feature for the club again. The manager fielded a lot of young players, but they struggled to make a mark on the team.

It was a chance for these youngsters to make an impression on McClaren, but failed miserably.

In light of that, these TWO players are surely the worst of the QPR players:

Jordan Cousins

This is a controversial call, as Cousins has featured this season for QPR and has not been their worst performer. But his two yellow cards yesterday in a day where he was one of the seemingly more experienced players must have left McClaren fuming. His performance was not particularly special before the sending off, but his discipline in yesterday’s match may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Sometimes, all it takes is one performance to damage your reputation for good.

Osman Kakay

It seems harsh to single out a 21-year-old, particularly when so many of his teammates were poor as well, including defender on the other flank Niko Hämäläinen. However, it is clear why McClaren scrambled to buy in Àngel Rangel at the end of the transfer window to play at right back, and to why he has opted to play centre back Alex Baptiste on the right ahead of Kakay.

The youngster struggled to make an incisive impact against Blackpool, while he can certainly develop as a player, for now he does not seem up to scratch.

Revealed: 46% of Southampton fans think Gunn should start instead of McCarthy

[ad_pod ]

One of Southampton’s most confusing transfer decisions of the summer was to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn in a deal worth £13.5m.

Not because he isn’t a good player, but because of the fact that they already had Alex McCarthy – who performed brilliantly in 2018 and picked up the club’s Player of the Year award despite not making his first Premier League appearance until the end of December 2017.

The 28-year-old played a key role in Saints’ survival under Mark Hughes with some crucial saves to help them narrowly avoid relegation to the Championship.

He has begun the current campaign in similarly fine form too – even if his team lie in 16th position in the top flight standings – earning a call-up into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the previous fixtures against Spain and Switzerland and the upcoming UEFA Nations’ League matches against Spain and Croatia.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”304066″ player=”12034″ title=”Could Jadon Sancho Be England’s Neymar”]

Despite being so highly-rated Gunn – whose distribution appears to be better than that of Southampton’s current number one – has so far had to settle for starts in the Carabao Cup, but he was one of the south coast outfit’s heroes and was heavily praised by his own supporters on Twitter as they beat Everton on penalties last week to reach the last 16 of the competition.

We at Football FanCast decided to ask Saints fans to vote on our poll to see who they think should be starting between the sticks, and while 54% would keep the faith with McCarthy, 46% have called upon Hughes to make the unthinkable decision to drop the St Mary’s fans’ favourite – as you can see from the results below.

Perhaps we were still caught up in the romance of England’s summer fling in Russia, perhaps we were just excited to see the Three Lions partake in a genuinely challenging competitive fixture outside of a major international tournament, but England’s inaugural embarking of the Nations League last month felt like a truly encouraging moment for not only English football but also UEFA’s new competition, designed to revolutionise the often mind-numbing humdrum of international breaks.

It ended in defeat for the Three Lions at the hands of Spain and reminded England fans that the summer’s surprise march to the 2018 World Cup semi-final was exactly that – an incident that defied probability. There is still much work for Gareth Southgate to do if England are to reach that stage of international tournaments regularly, or better yet surpass them to lift a major honour.

But such heavy grounding after the highs of the summer is precisely why the Nations League can be so beneficial to England. Teams like Spain provide the tough lessons the Three Lions need to learn from, like how a talented midfield can easily push back Southgate’s offensive-minded, idiosyncratic formation into a far less expansive 5-3-2, to move up to the next calibre of international sides.

Already though, it feels as if opinions on a competition that has officially been in action for just over a month are changing for the worse. Far from transforming international football into something that genuinely excites a worldwide audience, that makes meaningless, disinterested and often completely disjointed friendlies a matter of the past, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described the Nations League as “the most senseless competition in the world.”

Perhaps we shouldn’t expect much else from a Premier League manager, for the battle between club and country – in English football at least – has become a never-ending one, but there are signs that Southgate is taking the competition with a pinch of salt too. Southgate has rightly taken a long-termist approach to the England tenure, his new contract acknowledging that by taking the England boss through to the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but his latest squad includes a staggering seven players yet to be capped at senior level, two from the Championship, five who are yet to make three league starts this season and seven aged 21 or younger.

Bearing in mind England’s injury problems, with a number of the World Cup heroes absent, that squad would be more than understandable for the kind of the meaningless friendlies that have unfortunately littered international football over the last few decades. But these trips to Croatia and Spain will essentially decide whether England are relegated into League B – they’re competitive fixtures by design – and the consequences of that should not be taken lightly.

The idea of throwing on Mason Mount or starting Nathaniel Chalobah doesn’t breed huge confidence in England’s chances of beating two talent-laden sides they’ve already lost to within the last four months on the road, and although the injury list is a considerable one lets not forget some of the quality and proven international players that have been left at home – Daniel Sturridge, Ashley Young, Ryan Bertrand, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Hart and Theo Walcott to name a few. All have featured prominently for their clubs this season, and some have been amongst the Premier League’s better performers.

And if Southgate’s already adopted a cynical perspective of the Nations League, he could really be missing a trick here. First and foremost, as already discussed, it’s easily England’s best chance of learning through experience between tournaments, because it puts the Three Lions up against the top sides in the world in a competitive context – surely a vital asset for this incredibly young England contingent. Drop down to League B though, and the calibre of sides is far less thrilling: Wales, Russia, Austria, Slovakia, Sweden, Bosnia, Ireland, Turkey and Denmark. These players won’t gain much from beating countries England have always historically been better than.

But perhaps even more pertinent than that is how Nations League relegation could affect arguably Southgate’s greatest achievement as England boss – re-establishing a long-lost connection between the national team and the fans. Of course, the highs of the World Cup played a big part in that, as did much of the increased engagement with the media.

But treating Nations League fixtures with essentially the same seriousness as friendlies while compelling England to face a much less enticing calibre of opponent is a sure-fire way to reviving the disillusionment among the fan base. Whereas the teams in League A give cause for genuine excitement around England fixtures, the idea of a conquerable challenge those in the stands can rally behind, switching between League B games, friendlies and qualifiers against much lesser nations certainly does not. It takes England games back to feeling far more like a chore than a treat for supporters.

Perhaps Southgate will throw a few surprises and stick to strong starting XIs for both games – only using his seven uncapped recruits as impact players, giving them experience of the camp and a few minutes on the pitch rather than throwing them in at the deep end. But for England, the Nations League represents a winnable competition with an abundance of benefits – taking it too lightly could undo much of the good work Southgate’s already done as England manager and puts the quick development the Three Lions have shown under his tutelage in serious danger of petering out.

Moreno linked with shock move to Arsenal, Liverpool fans react

[ad_pod ]

Alberto Moreno will not go down in Liverpool’s history as a fan favourite, and some may even be confused as to why he remains at Anfield.

The left-back has had a difficult time at the Merseyside club over the last few years.

He lost his place to midfielder James Milner before becoming second fiddle to Andrew Robertson.

Despite occasionally struggling during matches, it appears that Moreno has attracted the interest of some elite clubs.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal manager Unai Emery is considering a move for the Spaniard having worked with the left-back at Sevilla.

Moreno will come to the end of his current contract next summer and it is believed that he has no intention of signing fresh terms.

The reports of Arsenal’s alleged interest has sparked quite the reaction from Liverpool fans, many of whom took to Reddit to express their thoughts.

Revealed: 45% of Rangers fans think Morelos is worth £20m

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans have been discussing the red-hot form of Alfredo Morelos, and 45 per cent of fans think the club should be looking for a whopping £20m if they cash in on the controversial striker.

Morelos tends to split opinion amongst Rangers fans, as there are still plenty who feel the youngster is not worth all the hassle.

The 22 year-old Colombian international has improved drastically under Steven Gerrard, but he is certainly not perfect.

His 12 goals this season could be so much more if he buried all his chances, and he has already picked up two needless red cards this season.

However, 12 goals and three assists at this stage of the season is not to be sniffed at, so any club making a move for the youngster would have to splash some serious cash.

He was linked with a move away in the summer, and has expressed an interest in moving to the Premier League to further his career.

Fans are almost in complete agreement that they need to get a huge sum if he does leave, as 45 per cent said he is worth up £20m while 36 per cent place his value around £15m.

Leeds fans are so right: Bielsa should give Jack Clarke his first start against Ipswich

Leeds United supporters have been pretty quiet in recent times after seeing their team suffer a second Championship defeat of the season at the weekend.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men went into their encounter with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park having won just one of their preceding four league matches, and thus seeking a response against Tony Mowbray’s side. Yet the Whites were unable to return to winning ways as goals from Danny Graham and Darragh Lenihan either side of a Mateusz Klich equaliser sealed a 2-1 success for the Lancashire-based outfit, thus leaving Leeds in fourth place in the Championship table.

As such, there have been many disappointed Leeds fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have taken to Twitter recently to call for Bielsa to give young forward Jack Clarke a start against bottom side Ipswich Town this evening.

And those Leeds fans are spot on to be calling for the 17-year-old to earn his first senior start for the Yorkshire giants later on today, as Bielsa must seek to move Kemar Roofe from the right wing to the main striker’s role at Elland Road, thus paving the way for Clarke to earn a starting role.

Ultimately, the 17-year-old has shown glimpses of promise in his two substitute cameos in recent weeks, not least on Saturday in coming off the bench and giving Leeds greater dynamism in the final third of the pitch – he injected a great deal of energy into what was, up until that point, a very disappointing display from Bielsa’s side.

And while Tyler Roberts did a solid job of deputising for the injured Roofe in wins over Preston North End and Hull City, it’s pretty clear that Bielsa needs to bring the ex-Oxford United forward back into the striker role against Paul Hurst’s Tractor Boys this evening, which should enable Clarke to start out on the flank.

And that’s because the 25-year-old was in sensational goal-scoring form prior to his injury back in September, what with the Englishman bagging four goals in his opening six appearances for Bielsa’s side, in which time he also laid on two assists to suggest that he was more than just a goal-scorer.

And while Bielsa did recall him to the starting eleven in defeat at Ewood Park on Saturday, he played down the right-hand-side and really struggled to get into the game and make a meaningful impact – easing him back in after a month out certainly made sense, but it’s clear that he needs to play up top if he is to make a telling impact.

As such, it’s pretty obvious that Roofe must be reinstated into the main striker role against Ipswich this evening, which opens the door for 17-year-old Clarke to potentially earn his first start for the club down the right-hand-side – a bold selection call Bielsa must make ahead of this evening’s encounter.

2 things Nottingham Forest must ensure they do to win promotion to Premier League

Nottingham Forest’s big summer of spending and squad overhaul meant many expected the Reds to be one of the frontrunners this term in the Championship.

Inconsistencies have marred the season though for Aitor Karanka’s men, although they do still sit comfortably in the Championship playoff race despite dropping important points and failing to go on any sort of winning run as yet.

The talent is there though for Forest, and Karanka must know that he has plenty at his disposal as the Championship heads into the difficult winter period which can often make of break teams.

We at the Tavern don’t think there’s any reason why the Reds can’t challenge for the top two, but we also think that a few things will need to fall into place in order for that dream to be fulfilled.

With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at TWO things Nottingham Forest need to do to ensure they win promotion…

Get the best out of their summer imports

One thing which turned heads in the summer was the influx of big name foreign signings who arrived at the City Ground.

However, the likes of Carvalho, Dias, and Goncalves have yet to hit anything like the form many expected them to upon their arrival in the UK, and if Forest are to have success, they could well do with getting their big summer signings at their best.

The talent is there, but Forest and Karanka simply must get the best of his imports if he is to see success.

Trust in Karanka

One thing Forest can’t afford to do is make another managerial change.

In Aitor Karanka, the Reds have someone who already has Championship promotions on his CV, and it will would be a poor decision to simply cast him aside if results do go awry.

Of course, every manager sees their time come to an end eventually, but we firmly believe Karanka is the man for Forest, and success will come his way given the time and backing.

HYS: Who would Loftus-Cheek replace at West Ham United?

[ad_pod ]

After signing nine new players in the summer, not many would have predicted that West Ham United would be dipping back into the market come January.

It is unclear if the club’s co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are willing to spend, but recent reports suggest that manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to bolster his midfield.

According to The Mirror, the East London outfit are keen on taking Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season.

The report claims that Blues boss Maurizio Sarri is against the idea and wants to keep the midfielder in his squad.

Many assumed that Loftus-Cheek would kick on from the World Cup after impressing for England in Russia.

However, he struggled to break into Sarri’s team and it has only been in the last three matches that he has been given a chance.

If West Ham are able to weaken Chelsea’s stance and land Loftus-Cheek, who has scored four goals this season, then who in Pellegrini’s midfield may have to make way?

Robert Snodgrass has been making a big impression in more of an advanced central role in recent weeks, but should the 6ft 3in ace arrive at the London Stadium his Irons career would surely be over.

Tottenham should forget move for Phil Jones

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Manchester United defender Phil Jones ahead of a potential move this summer.

What’s the story?

Jones is one of a number of United stars out of contract at the end of this season, but it is understood that the Red Devils will soon activate a 12-month extension.

It is thought that the activation is purely to protect the value of the defender, however, rather than to reflect his importance to the team.

According to The Sun, Tottenham are closely monitoring developments surrounding the Englishman, and could launch a bid at the end of the season.

Jones was once regarded as one of the best young talents in the English game, but the former Blackburn Rovers defender has just not kicked on over the last few seasons.

It is not too difficult to see why the deal is attractive for Tottenham when considering that he could be available for a small fee, but Spurs really should swerve a move for the error-prone 26-year-old.

Why should Tottenham forget Jones?

Sir Alex Ferguson once claimed that Jones could go on to become one of United’s greatest ever players.

There is no question that the 5ft 11in ace has talent, but consistency has been a real problem, and it is difficult to imagine that will ever come.

A hamstring injury has forced Jones to miss some football this season, but he has recently returned to fitness, and still cannot break into a United defence which has been poor at best in the early weeks of the campaign.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”327140″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Leicester Trump Man City Chelsea & Liverpool”]

Indeed, Jones has just 58 minutes of Premier League football to his name this term, and that was a pretty rotten cameo against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

The 27-time England international might yet go on to realise his potential, but Tottenham should forget a move at this stage.
