Ange has a future £100m star who can end Porro's Spurs career

“I always win something in my second season”. Those were the words, well there or thereabouts, of Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou earlier this term.

With Spurs sat in 14th place in the Premier League and staring down the barrel of another trophyless campaign, the craggy-faced Australian is clearly walking on thin ice.

While it’s been a horrific season on a domestic level, the Lilywhites are at least enjoying a strong run in Europe. The Europa League remains the sole chance Ange has of winning a major honour this term and it could be decisive in whether he keeps his job.

Daniel Levy has overseen the sacking and hiring of many a manager during his time in north London and will pray that Postecoglou can engineer a turnaround. Stability is what they need heading into next season.

It’s not just been a tricky season for the manager and his coaching staff, but a number of Spurs players have not been up to the task, notably in defence.

Pedro Porro has been the most suspect member of the backline.

Pedro Porro's season in numbers

Considering the front-footed nature of Postecoglou’s style of play, Spurs are always going to concede goals. While they thrilled supporters with their attacking football last season and at the beginning of this term, it has ultimately come at the expense of results.

They have had to deal with a number of injuries, notably at full-back, missing Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie at one stage this season.

Truth be told, any side would miss three quarters of their backline but Porro, as the senior statesmen alongside the likes of Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin, did not cover himself in glory.

There have been some notable mistakes this season, and they largely focus on the Spaniard’s positioning, an area of the game that he hasn’t improved upon since an awful debut game against Leicester.

Porro’s debut XI: Leicester 4-1 Spurs

GK – Fraser Forster

RWB – Pedro Porro

CB – Eric Dier

CB – Ben Davies

CB – Japhet Tanganga

LWB – Ivan Perisic

CM – Rodrigo Bentancur

CM – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

CAM – Dejan Kulusveski

CAM – Heung-min Son

CF – Harry Kane

Tim Sherwood was quick to critique him after that game, simply suggesting that “Porro is so bad it’s unbelievable. His positioning is disgusting.”

Since that moment he did improve, noticeably in the final third. In 2023/24, the Spain international scored four times and posted seven assists. He’s contributed seven assists this term too.

However, while he’s capable of magical moments in attacking phases of play, the 25-year-old is consistently caught out at the back.

Take Spurs’ defeat to Ipswich at home earlier in the season. Porro was caught out positionally for both goals in that 2-1 loss.

There was that agonising moment against Arsenal, too, where Leandro Trossard’s smart turn on the left flank left the right-back in the dust.

Then there was his concession of the ball in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Caught up the field, Porro gave away possession, which allowed Milos Kerkez to break down the left and cross for Marcus Tavernier to find the net.

It was the latest in a long line of mistakes. So, where can Postecoglou turn to?

How Spurs can solve their Porro conundrum

The most natural solution for Tottenham Hotspur here is to unleash Djed Spence, a player tipped to be included in one of Thomas Tuchel’s England squads after a remarkable revival this season.

Tottenham star Djed Spence

Spence didn’t feature at all for Spurs last year, loaned out to both Leeds United and Genoa in Italy but he has returned with a vengeance and now looks like a major part of the club’s future, appearing in 24 games, scoring twice and registering two assists.

With Porro reportedly attracting interest from elsewhere ahead of the summer, Spence must be able to look forward to a more regular role in the side.

However, that role should be handed to Archie Gray instead, a “future £100m” talent in the eyes of data analyst Ben Mattinson.

Gray signed from Leeds last summer for around £30m and has endured a bit of a baptism of fire in Spurs colours. A midfielder by trade, the vast majority of his outings under Postecoglou have come at centre-back, largely because of their defensive injury crisis.

He did catch the eye, though, with the manager notably hailing his performances out of position: “He doesn’t shy away from it, he doesn’t hide. He just keeps going. We’ll get enormous growth out of him during this period, but right now he’s contributing to us, he’s helping us.”

Despite impressing in the centre of defence, his future certainly looks as though it’ll be slightly further forward in midfield or even in Porro’s right-back position.

Indeed, it was on the right side of defence that the teenager captured the imagination for Leeds last season, missing just two Championship games and appearing at right-back on 30 occasions.

Not only will he give you a more polished defensive performance than Porro at right-back but he can also contribute effectively in the final third. He only picked up two assists last campaign but at the age of just 19, he has plenty of time to develop that side of his game.

One of those assists came in 4-0 win over Swansea in February 2024, with BBC pundit Jon Newsome waxing lyrical over his display at the time: “I think sometimes it is quite easy to forget he is only 17. You look at him now and he’s like this experienced, quality footballer. He’s a kid! But he’s not a kid, he’s a kid in a man’s body with a man’s mentality. He is way wise beyond his years, absolutely superb young man.”

So, while Porro’s future in the north of London doesn’t look too bright, it certainly looks rosy for Mr Gray who looks set to dazzle Premier League audiences for a while yet, regardless of the position he plays in.

Will Smeed blasts Somerset past rivals with rapid-fire 94

Batter smashes eight sixes and eight fours, leaving Gloucestershire with plenty of ground to make up

ECB Reporters Network09-Jun-2023

Will Smeed set Somerset up with his 94•Getty Images

Will Smeed produced a blistering knock of 94 from 35 balls to propel top-of-the-table Somerset to a comfortable 80-run Vitality Blast win over West Country rivals Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium. The England Lions batter dominated a brilliant opening stand of 122 in 10 overs with Tom Banton, accruing eight sixes and eight fours, as Somerset ran up 231 for 4, their best ever total in matches against Gloucestershire and the third-highest recorded in any T20 fixture at Bristol.Chasing such a huge total proved beyond a Gloucestershire side missing several key players through injury, the hosts being dismissed for 151 in 19 overs, despite a spirited knock of 61 from Miles Hammond, who shared in a stand of 75 for the second wicket with Ben Charlesworth.Roelof van der Merwe and Josh Davey claimed three wickets each to derail the reply, while off-spinner Shoaib Bashir went through the tail to finish with three also as Gloucestershire lost their last nine wickets for just 52 runs. This was Somerset’s seventh win in eight South Group matches this summer and victory over their neighbours served to maintain their advantage over nearest rivals Surrey and Hampshire. Beaten in four of their seven fixtures, Gloucestershire have a good deal of ground to make up if they are to challenge for a quarter-final place.Having played himself into form when making 52 against Hampshire at Southampton last time out, Smeed picked up where he left off, treating a full house to an astonishing display of clean hitting after Somerset had been put in.The 21-year-old right-hander was particularly severe on Gloucestershire’s spinners, greeting Zafar Gohar with a huge six over backward square leg in the third over. He repeated the shot at the expense of Matt Taylor in the next over, while Banton drove Zafar and Taylor down the ground for four to give the powerplay lift-off.Veteran left arm seamer David Payne managed to restore some sanity to proceedings in two overs with the new ball that cost just 10 runs, but Smeed launched a terrible assault upon Tom Smith, plundering a quartet of fours and a six to race to a 21-ball 50 at the end of an over that spawned 24 runs as the visitors raised 62 from the powerplay. There was no respite for the bowlers, Smeed welcoming Danny Lamb with a towering six backward of square and then helping himself to another maximum, smashing the Lancastrian over long-on. Desperate to break the opening partnership, Gloucestershire skipper Jack Taylor called himself into the attack to bowl the ninth over, only to see his first delivery dispatched over long-on for six and his second, another full toss, put away through mid-wicket for four. When Banton hoisted him high over the long-on boundary, Somerset had raised 100 inside nine overs. In attempting to post a hundred inside 10 overs, Smeed blotted his copybook, attempting to hit Zafar over deep square for six, only to fall short and hole out to Matt Taylor, much to the relief of Gloucestershire’s players and supporters. Having held sway for 36 murderous minutes, the opener finished with eight sixes and eight fours, coming agonisingly close to registering what would have been a spectacular 35-ball century. Smeed has now been dismissed in the nineties on five occasions during his career.Cast in the unaccustomed role of support act, Banton went in the very next over, falling to a brilliant catch by wicketkeeper James Bracey and departing for a run-a-ball 26 with the score still on 122.Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Tom Abell added 40 in 3.5 overs for the third wicket, maintaining Somerset’s impressive momentum. Hard-hitting Kohler-Cadmore struck 30 from 15 balls before taking on Zafar once too often and being held on the mid-wicket boundary by Hammond.Gloucestershire stuck to their task, Ollie Price bowling Abell in the act of sweeping to reduce the visitors to 173 for 4 in the 16th over.Although Somerset raised 200 inside 18 overs, the record score for a T20 match at Bristol – 242 made by Gloucestershire against Middlesex in 2018 – was always likely to prove beyond them. Nevertheless, Lewis Gregory and Sean Dickson gave it their best shot, staging a frenzied unbeaten alliance of 58 in 24 balls for the fifth wicket as the home side wilted under pressure. Gregory mustered a brace of sixes and fours in scoring 30 from 13 balls, while Dickson’s 28 occupied 17 balls.Payne showed what was possible by sending down four overs for 25, but it was a painful experience for some of his teammates, Lamb conceding 53 from three overs and Smith 36 from two as Gloucestershire came under sustained heavy bombardment.Craig Overton dismissed Ben Wells in the third over to render Gloucestershire’s task even more difficult, but Hammond and Charlesworth matched one another blow for blow as the reply passed 50 inside five overs. The powerplay yielded 63 and the 50 partnership arrived via 33 balls as the second wicket pair served notice of their determination to make a game of it.Just when Somerset needed a breakthrough, Davey obliged, removing Charlesworth and Ollie Price with successive deliveries in the tenth over. Charlesworth had scored 41 from 25 balls and helped add 75 with Hammond, when he was held at long-on, while Davey took a fine return catch to account for Price via a leading edge as the hosts reached the halfway point of their innings on 100 for 3.Hammond continued his defiance, going to 50 from 28 balls, but he chanced his arm once too often when attempting to hit van de Merwe over long-on and instead holed out to Overton. When Jack Taylor fell later in the same over, Gloucestershire were 124 for 5, requiring a notional 108 runs from 44 balls, and the outcome was beyond doubt.Smeed said: “I was on about 77 when Tom Banton said to me ‘you’ve got to go for the quickest hundred’. That was very much in my mind thereafter, and explains why I went for that big hit on 94. I do like scores in the nineties and it’s a shame I was unable to go on and reach three figures. But I really enjoyed myself out there.”

'We don't want to be pushovers any more' – Tammy Beaumont

Self-belief is coursing through an England side which has come a long way since 2019

Tammy Beaumont got off to a brisk start in Bristol•Gareth Copley/Getty Images

“We don’t want to be pushovers any more,” declared Tammy Beaumont when explaining the importance of self-belief to her England side’s remarkable Ashes push from 6-0 down to all square with two matches to play. And it was another declaration, back in July 2019, that started it all. Back then with the Ashes lost again Clare Connor, then the ECB’s managing director, announced that there would be a complete revamp of domestic women’s cricket in England to avoid another chastening defeat at the hands of Australia, whom she recognised had set the standard for how things should be done. With England 12-2 down in that series, it felt like a seminal moment, and it was.England secured a consolation win in the final match of the series but, much more than that, the ECB followed up Connor’s announcement with action, introducing a new regional structure, a new head coach – which has since changed again – and greater investment in the women’s game. All this we know but, even though it has taken four years, there is a strong sense now that the sea-change is complete. On Friday, ahead of the penultimate match in the series, Beaumont drew parallels with the revival of England’s men’s team following their 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia in 2021-22. Now both teams stand on the cusp of extraordinary achievements. England Women must win their remaining two ODIs if they are to win back the Ashes held by Australia since 2015, while their male counterparts trail Australia 1-2 and must win the last two Tests to win do likewise.”It’s really important,” Beaumont said of her team’s never-say-die attitude, which has come to the fore in this series. “You’re seeing that with the men’s Ashes as well, they’ve gone two-nil down, but we don’t want to be pushovers anymore.”That’s probably why this series has been so captivating to everyone. I am a massive cricket badger, but I feel like Ashes fever is everywhere for both the men and the women and it’s great to see. British culture has always loved an underdog so I think it’s probably helped that we’re taking on such a great team in Australia. I personally love that feeling of trying to overcome a bit of difficulty.”Related

Death, taxes and Kate Cross nailing the scoop

Beaumont, the opener whose record innings of 208 gave her side a strong chance in the Test which opened the series and was ultimately won by Australia, was overlooked for the T20I leg of the series, having lost her place in the squad for the shortest format last summer. England won the second two T20Is with Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley at the top of the order to turn the series and so she admits she “can’t be too hard done by” despite making no secret of the fact she’s “desperate” to try and break back into the T20I side.Beaumont did, however, return for the first ODI in Bristol, in which she set up England’s highest ever 50-over run chase with 47 from 42 balls before Heather Knight’s unbeaten 75 and Kate Cross’s priceless 19 not out from No. 10 saw them home.”I just feel like there’s such great trust in everyone at every situation,” Beaumont said. “At Bristol the other day, there was no doubt in my mind that Kate Cross could bat like that. Every single one of us on the sideline felt completely at ease knowing that Kate had the skills to do it. Everybody just backs each other’s abilities and their decision-making. It’s a great feeling to have.”That that wasn’t always the case, Beaumont says, especially against an opposition with as formidable a reputation as Australia, who went into Bristol unbeaten in 15 ODIs.”In the past, if we’d lost the first two Ashes games, maybe wouldn’t have had that belief as much,” she said. “So from our way of looking at it, externally to them, we have kind of got that belief and a little bit of taking that aura away.”For Australia, however, left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen said there was no sense of panic, given her team needs to win just one of the remaining two games to retain the Ashes.”Definitely not,” Jonassen said. “This side has won a lot of games of cricket over a number of years and the fact that the last three haven’t really gone our way is no cause to panic.”The scores are level. We haven’t played our best cricket, which is probably the thing that we’re focusing on the most. England still need to win two, but equally, we’re trying to win the last two as well. There’s two high-quality sides and if you’re not on on any given day, then the opposition is going to take the game away from you.”Even though the losses we’ve had have been really, really tight and really close, we feel that it’s been our own undoing in a way, that we’ve been a bit sloppy in certain areas and lacked a little bit of discipline at times in terms of extras, misfields and what have you. But the positive is that’s all in our control.”Whatever happens from this point, however, there is no denying now that the gap, identified so starkly four years ago, is closing.

Gaikwad, Rinku and Prasidh sparkle as India seal series win

Andy Balbirnie’s 72 was not enough as Ireland finished 34 short of their target of 186

Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a half-century but Rinku Singh stole the limelight with a swashbuckling innings at the death as India sealed the series by beating Ireland by 33 runs in the second T20I.Gaikwad and Sanju Samson put on 71 to stabilise India after they lost two wickets in the powerplay. Then, with Ireland applying the squeeze following their departures, Rinku – batting for the first time in international cricket – took centre stage to help India pump 42 runs off the last two overs and get to a total of 185, which proved too much for Ireland.Andy Balbirnie fought a lone battle for Ireland with a 51-ball 72 but it wasn’t enough as Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi spearheaded India’s defence with two wickets apiece. After India were put in on a sunny afternoon in Malahide, Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal got going in the second over. Gaikwad nudged Josh Little behind square for the first boundary of the match before Jaiswal pulled successive deliveries for four and six.Jaiswal drove Barry McCarthy for another four before Craig Young got him for the second consecutive match by cramping him with a short ball. Jaiswal went for the pull nonetheless, and ended up caught on the boundary by Curtis Campher running to his left from deep midwicket and reaching over his head.McCarthy then struck in similar fashion as Tilak Varma skied a pull to deep square leg.Gaikwad stepped up the tempo soon after the powerplay, taking on the short ball. He first pulled legspinner Ben White in front of midwicket and then dispatched Young on either side of the midwicket fielder off consecutive balls in the next over.Samson then played an impeccable on-drive off Adair before ramping up the pressure on Little, hitting him for three fours and a six in the 11th over as the left-arm quick ended up conceding 48 in his four overs. Samson drove him over cover for a one-bounce four and then slapped a length ball over extra-cover. He then steered a low, wide full-toss past the keeper to make it 4, 4, 4. A dot off the next ball was only momentary respite for Little, who then went short only to be pulled behind square for six.Josh Little conceded 48 off his four overs•Sportsfile via Getty Images

But Young pulled things back with a five-run 12th over before Samson dragged on off White, to bring Rinku to the crease.Rinku swept White for his first four in the 15th over before Gaikwad brought out a sweep of his own to bring up his half-century. Gaikwad then smacked him down the ground for six to take India to 129 for 3, leaving them poised for a potential 200-plus score.McCarthy outfoxed Gaikwad with a slower ball in the 16th over, however, and Ireland began stifling India with good use of the short ball and slower ones. India could score just 14 runs off the 16th, 17th and 18th overs.A below-par score on a high-scoring ground looked likely, with both Rinku and Dube struggling to break the shackles. Then Rinku did what he had done so many times in IPL 2023 to earn his India call-up.He carved McCarthy over backward point for four in the 19th over and hoicked the next ball, a slower one, over long-on for his first six. McCarthy then bowled two wides on the trot and changed his angle to go around the wicket, but it did little to stop Rinku’s charge as he carted him over cover for another six.Adair started the final over with a leg-stump full toss that Dube helped behind square for the first of two sixes. The next ball was in the slot and Dube swung it far into the stands over deep midwicket. Rinku then duly pulled a length ball for another six, the crowd’s cheers growing louder with each hit.A top-edge off an attempted pull saw Rinku walk back for 38 off 21, but by then he had done enough to get India to a more-than-fighting total.Chasing 186, Ireland saw out Jasprit Bumrah’s first over, although Balbirnie survived an lbw appeal that returned umpire’s call at the stumps after India reviewed the not-out decision.Sanju Samson scored a fluent 40 off 26 balls•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Balbirnie got going off the next over, hitting Arsheep Singh for two boundaries on either side of the wicket. But Prasidh broke the game open in the next over, using the short-ball tactic that had worked well for Ireland. He got Paul Stirling to top-edge a pull that Arshdeep claimed, running in from fine leg to send the Ireland captain back for a four-ball duck. Two balls later, Lorcan Tucker miscued a pull towards mid-on, where Gaikwad held on running across from midwicket, despite a mini-collision with Dube.Ravi Bishnoi completed a good powerplay for India by cleaning Harry Tector up with a wrong’un. At 31 for 3, Ireland already needed more than 11 an over.Balbirnie briefly raised their hopes, sweeping Washington Sundar for back-to-back fours in the seventh over, and Campher got going with a slog-swept Bishnoi for a six off his next over. But a quiet over from Dube amped up the pressure and Campher spooned a catch to backward point off Bishnoi to leave Ireland reeling at 64 for 4 after ten overs. But Balbirnie kept going, hitting Dube for two sixes and sweeping Bishnoi for four either side of a four-run 12th over bowled by Bumrah. Balbirnie brought up his tenth T20I fifty in the 13th, which also saw Dockrell hit Bishnoi down the ground for six.Ireland now needed 92 from 42 balls. Gaikwad dropped a regulation chance of Dockrell off Washington’s bowling in the 14th over, but Dockrell was soon walking back after a mix-up with Balbirnie.Balbirnie, who had pulled Prasidh for six right before Dockrell’s dismissal, gave Arshdeep similar treatment but the left-arm quick came back by throwing it up wide and getting the opener to edge behind. That all but sealed India’s win as McCarthy failed to recreate his heroics from the first T20I, holing out off a Bumrah slower ball. Mark Adair hit a few lusty blows at the end, but by then the contest was over. Bumrah eventually had him caught in the deep as he closed out the game with a wicket maiden.
