The race for places in the World Test Championship final is almost over. Here’s how the remaining contenders stand after India’s victory against Australia in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Delhi. Are India through to the WTC final? Not quite, but they have certainly taken a giant step towards qualification. After the win in Delhi, India’s points percentage is 64.06, and while Australia are still on top with 66.67, the gap has narrowed considerably. The only way India will miss out on a spot in the final is if they don’t win either of the last two Tests against Australia, and if Sri Lanka win 2-0 in New Zealand. If India lose their last two games against Australia, they will drop to 56.94, while two draws will leave them on 60.65. If Sri Lanka win both Tests in New Zealand, they will rise to 61.11. However, even if Sri Lanka win the series 1-0, they will only end up with 55.55%, which will be lower than India’s 56.94 even if they lose the last two Tests against Australia. Are Australia through to the WTC final?Even if Australia lose 4-0 to India, they will still finish on 59.65%. For them to miss out on the WTC final, they will have to lose their last two matches, and Sri Lanka will have to win both Tests in New Zealand. Even if Australia draw one of the last two Tests, they will end up on 61.40, which is marginally higher than Sri Lanka’s maximum of 61.11 (assuming they don’t lose any points due to over-rate).What about Sri Lanka’s chances? For Sri Lanka, the equation is simple: they must win both Tests in New Zealand, and then hope that the India-Australia series doesn’t end up 3-1 or 3-0. In those two cases both India and Australia will finish on a higher percentage than Sri Lanka, even if they win both Tests in New Zealand. If India win fewer than three Tests, Australia and Sri Lanka will qualify, and if India win 4-0, India and Sri Lanka will qualify. But first, though, they will have to accomplish the tall order of winning both Tests in New Zealand. Are South Africa out of contention? Yes, South Africa are out for sure. The maximum they can reach is 55.56, while the minimum for both India (56.94) and Australia (59.65) is higher than that.

Johnson Charles joins Kolkata Knight Riders as Litton Das replacement

Two-time T20 World Cup champion Johnson Charles has joined Kolkata Knight Riders for the remainder of IPL 2023 as a replacement player for Litton Das.Charles, a member of the West Indies team that was crowned champions in 2012 and 2016, brings with him extensive experience at the top of the batting order. He has opened in 179 of his 219 T20 innings, averaging 25.47 and striking at 125.72. He is, however, only just reacquainting himself with international cricket.Charles spent six years out of the West Indies set up, returning in October 2022 and playing seven T20Is since. He made a 39-ball century against South Africa in March. This will be the 34 year-old’s first stint in the IPL, having previously been part of franchise leagues in the Caribbean, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.Litton had left the Knight Riders camp earlier this month to attend to a medical emergency in his family. He played only one game in IPL 2023 having been bought for INR 50 lakh (approx USD 60,000) at the auction in December last year. Litton had also been called up to play for Bangladesh in an ODI series against Ireland starting next week. He would have missed three of the Knight Riders’ four remaining matches as they continue to fight for a place in the playoffs.KKR have been struggling for stability at the top this season, having gone through six opening combinations in nine games. Their first wicket partnership averages 21.33 – only Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals fare worse – and has crossed fifty just once.Charles, brought in for INR 50 lakh (approx USD 60,000), does have some experience batting in the middle order as well. He’s hit two of his three T20 centuries from Nos. 3 and 4, which may come in handy given KKR have two other players who present an attractive package as opening batters.Rahmanullah Gurbaz was in top form in thelr last game – a loss to Gujarat Titans – and Jason Roy showcased excellent skill, especially against spin, in two of his three innings so far. If these two keep their spots, Charles may not get a lot of game time considering Andre Russell and Sunil Narine walk into the XI every time they’re fit. IPL teams can only pick four overseas players for each game.Knight Riders, currently eighth on the points table, face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday and have matches scheduled with Punjab Kings (May 8), Rajasthan Royals (May 11), Chennai Super Kings (May 14) and Lucknow Super Giants (May 20).

Equipes do Brasil monitoram o profissional.

OUTROS CASOS

Blow for Rangers and Ferguson as 17-goal ace could now miss chunk of action

Rangers could now be without an “important” 17-goal player for a chunk of the rest of the season, according to a new update that will concern Barry Ferguson.

Rangers starring under Ferguson with wins over Fenerbahce and Celtic

The Gers are still basking in the glory of their 3-2 win away to rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon, following Hamza Igamane’s late winner at Parkhead, having initially blown a 2-0 lead.

While the result may not necessarily make a huge difference to the grand scheme of things in the title race this season, it was further proof that Rangers are heading in the right direction under Ferguson, who remains in temporary charge for the time being.

The Scot has guided his side into the quarter-finals of the Europa League, following last Thursday’s penalty shootout win over Fenerbahce at Ibrox, and he will now be dreaming of getting the job on a permanent basis.

Should Rangers go all the way in Europe this season, there will only be increased calls for Ferguson to take charge in the long term, in what promises to be an exciting end to the campaign. A fresh blow has now emerged regarding a key player, however, which the boss won’t want to hear.

Rangers could lose Cerny for 8 matches

According to The Daily Record [via Ibrox News], Rangers attacker Vaclav Cerny could miss as many as eight matches for squirting water at Celtic fans after the winning goal on Sunday.

A ban appears to be coming the 27-year-old’s way, and while it may only be as short as two games, there is no guarantee that it won’t be more. He would only miss domestic fixtures, however, not Europa League outings.

Vaclav Cerny

Cerny has been such a key player for Rangers throughout this season, so Ferguson will be sweating over not having him available for a string of league matches.

The Czech has scored 17 goals in total – 11 in the league and six in the Europa League – also registering four assists, and Philippe Clement was complimentary of him during the time working together at Ibrox, saying:

“Vaclav showed a lot of composure in his moments, and it’s those moments that I want to see more and more from the team. He’s been working hard for the team and the club. He’s a player who is just in the building and people forget that; some players need six months to adapt to a new environment. In that way, he has already done some really good things and he will only grow in the future to become more important for the club.”

"Pathetic" – Pundit slams Sutton's comments following Rangers win at Celtic

He is just trying to get a rise out of Gers supporters.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 18, 2025

Hopefully, the authorities don’t feel that Cerny’s behaviour at Parkhead is worthy of a long ban – it could be argued that what he did wasn’t overly malicious – but if not, other attackers will need to step up in his absence.

Better than Sesko: Arsenal in talks to sign "one of the best in the world"

For Arsenal supporters, the international break has arrived at just the right time.

The Gunners are 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool but have a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid to look forward to.

This two-week break – or three-week break if you count that Arsenal don’t actually play again until April – could be just what Mikel Arteta and Co need to end the season strongly.

Arsenalplayers pose for a team groupphotobefore the match

Will it be a long enough break for Bukayo Saka to return fit and firing? Time will tell.

Irrespective of how the north Londoners end the season, however, they will desperately need to add bodies in the final third. A striker is of utmost importance.

The latest on Arsenal’s hunt for a new striker

Alexander Isak has and always will be the number one target not only for Arsenal but a lot of clubs.

The trouble is he’s now riding the crest of a wave at Newcastle United having recently won the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak

Reports have also suggested he could cost in the region of £150m to prise away from St James’ Park. His exit, therefore, is now quite unlikely.

So, who are the alternatives? Incoming sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly a fan of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha while Benjamin Sesko is a long-term target.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Then there’s Jonathan David. That’s according to a report from French outlet Le10Sport in recent days.

The Lille forward is out of contract this summer and set to leave the Ligue 1 club behind when his deal expires. As a result, he’ll be available on a free transfer.

Lille'sJonathanDavidcelebrates scoring their fourth goal

It’s stated that Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United all hold the strongest interest in the Canadian centre forward. The former are one of the sides said to have held ‘concrete talks’ over signing David.

How Jonathan David compares to Alexander Isak & Benjamin Sesko

If money was not an object then the Swede would undoubtedly be the number one option.

However, bringing in David on a free would be an incredibly smart deal when you consider that Arsenal could feasibly sign another forward, particularly with Gabriel Jesus set to miss the rest of 2024.

It’s also important given Arsenal also need to sign a winger to upgrade on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, while midfielder Martin Zubimendi is allegedly set to sign from Real Sociedad.

But, would signing David actually be worthwhile? The answer to that question is, yes.

Notably described as “one of the best strikers in the world” by Canadian football expert Tony Marinaro he’s quietly been going about his business in recent years, scoring consistently for Lille in France.

This season the 25-year-old has bagged 23 goals in 41 outings, backing up a return of 26 in 47 appearances last season. He’s pretty damn prolific.

So, how does he stack up compared to Isak? Here’s what the numbers say.

Well, Isak is certainly scoring at an increased rate, and on the evidence of the numbers above, he would be a colossal upgrade.

However, it’s important to factor in that one of them would cost you nothing and the other could set you back the best part of £150m.

So, how about comparing him to another of Arsenal’s major targets in Sesko?

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskobefore taking a penalty

Well, in this instance the Canada international appears to be the more all-round package, supplying more key passes, progressive passes and shot-creating actions. He’s also been more prolific in front of goal; obviously the key metric for any striker.

As a result, perhaps this could just be the dream alternative to any possible big-money forwards in the pipeline at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal wonderkid was tipped to be Henry 2.0, but Edu sold him for just £4m

Ellyse Perry's 99 sets the tempo for Australia as Lauren Filer cranks up the pace on debut

Ecclestone’s marathon spell helps keep England on track in Ashes opener at Trent Bridge

Valkerie Baynes22-Jun-2023

Lauren Filer lived up to her “impact bowler” billing on debut as she and Sophie Ecclestone combined to redress the balance on the opening day of the Women’s Ashes Test after Ellyse Perry had led Australia’s dominance for swathes of the game.Perry had done what she does best for Australia in compiling another excellent Test innings after Australia were 83 for 2 following the loss of openers Beth Mooney and Test debutant Phoebe Litchfield. But she fell agonisingly short of her third Test century when Filer had her caught at gully on 99. That came after Ecclestone took two wickets in three deliveries – including Alyssa Healy for a second-ball duck – leaving Australia on 238 for 6.A crowd of 5,545 had thinned considerably after an hour-and-a-half rain delay which straddled the tea break but, during an elongated evening session bathed in sunshine, those remaining saw Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardner put on a 77-run partnership for the seventh wicket to steady Australia once more. But when Lauren Bell removed Gardner shortly after England took the second new ball, this winding contest took another turn. Ecclestone bowled 28 overs on the trot – the lunch and rain stoppage falling within that spell – and ended the day with 3 for 71 and Filer 2 for 65.Emphasising Australia’s batting depth, Gardner crashed the only six of the day down the ground off the part-time leg-spin of Sophia Dunkley on the final over before the second new ball became available, but then Bell’s inswinger found Gardner’s outside edge and wicketkeeper Amy Jones did the rest. Australia closed on 328 for 7 with Sutherland unbeaten on 39.Playing her 11th Test and record 10th Ashes series, Perry was excellent again for Australia. She pulled the short ball to the boundary, drove beautifully through the covers – including Ecclestone’s first ball – and cracked a 76mph/123kph Filer delivery through backward point among her 15 boundaries. Now averaging 77.36 in Tests she had scored a century at Taunton in 2019 and an unbeaten double-hundred in Sydney in 2017.On this occasion, Perry brought up her fifty threading a four off Kate Cross between second slip and gully, followed immediately by another whipped off the pads through midwicket and shared a 119-run partnership with Tahlia McGrath, who produced some gorgeous strokeplay through the covers herself in reaching a well-paced half-century from 67 balls. It took a gem from left-arm spinner Ecclestone to remove McGrath, one that angled in and turned past the batter’s forward defence to clatter into the top of middle stump.Lauren Filer dismissed Ellyse Perry on 99•AFP/Getty Images

As expected Litchfield opened alongside Mooney, and played well during her innings of 23, including a deftly carved four through cover point off the fifth legitimate ball of the match after Cross twice overstepped in the first over. Litchfield steered Bell effortlessly to the left of a diving gully and produced a similar shot off Cross so that 12 of her first 15 runs had come in boundaries.Cross missed a tricky caught-and-bowled chance off Mooney, on 9 at the time, and saw her next ball timed with aplomb through extra cover by Litchfield. But Cross recovered when she had Litchfield out immediately after with a ball that pitched on a length outside off and moved in a touch before striking the front pad. It was probably inexperience which resulted in Litchfield departing swiftly without consulting the DRS. Hawk-Eye showed that the ball was missing the stumps just outside off.Mooney survived again on 19 when Cross drew a thick outside-edge which flew towards gully where a diving Danni Wyatt – making her Test debut after 245 white-ball games for England – couldn’t hold on. But it was Filer who made the next breakthrough.Filer thought she had a wicket with her first ball, as did umpire Sue Redfern, who adjudged Perry out lbw when she was on 10. But Perry had no hesitation in calling for the DRS, which confirmed she had got a big inside-edge onto her back pad. Filer’s second ball was just back of a length in the fourth-stump channel and had Perry bending back, fencing and missing as she was beaten for pace.Related

Filer’s raw pace was impressive and, with her 18th ball in international cricket, she removed Mooney, for 33 with a 74mph/119kph delivery that climbed on her and hit the edge near the splice before flying to gully where Cross held well.Left-hander Jess Jonassen batted up the order at No. 5 after scoring an unbeaten 173 against England for Australia A in their three-day warm-up match in Derby last week. But she provided Ecclestone’s second wicket when she gloved a catch to Tammy Beaumont at short leg and was given out upon England’s review.Ecclestone, only two years Filer’s senior but 110 matches more experienced, then removed Healy playing inside the line of one that clattered into off stump.Three overs later, Perry tried to cut Filer’s short ball as it continued to rise on her and just cleared Nat Sciver-Brunt at gully. Next ball, however, Filer bowled a fuller one outside off stump and as Perry attempted to drive she sent it to Sciver-Brunt, to Filer’s great delight.
