New South Wales 276 (Kerr 88) and 9 for 226 dec (J Sangha 75, Gilkes 64) beat Tasmania 213 (Wright 57, Doran 54, Tremain 5-48) and 214 (Wright 78*, Copeland 4-46) by 75 runsTrent Copeland and Jack Edwards were the key wicket-takers for New South Wales as they made it back-to-back Sheffield Shield wins with a hard-fought 74-run victory over Tasmania.Mac Wright played excellently for an unbeaten 78, to follow a half-century in the first innings, and Tasmania were still in with a chance of chasing down 290 in the final session before the last four wickets fell for 14 to a combination of Copeland and Chris Tremain.Copeland had earlier claimed his 400th first-class wicket when he produced a beauty which nipped back to bowl Beau Webster.Tasmania’s top order had made the home side work hard to add to the wicket they claimed on the third evening. Legspinner Tanveer Sangha provided the first breakthrough when he produced a good delivery to defeat Tim Ward then shortly before lunch Harry Conway found Eamonn Vines’ outside edge from around the wicket to end a 112-ball stay.Edwards’ part-time medium pace made an important impact during the afternoon when he lured Jake Doran into a drive which found point and he added a second early in the final session with a superb delivery to clean up Nivethan Radhakrishnan. At six down with and 127 still needed Tasmania might have considered trying to hang on but Tom Andrews played aggressively to move along at a run-a-ball as he and Wright added 37 in seven overs to bring the requirement down to double figures. But Andrews picked out mid-on against Copeland and the lower order went quickly. Jackson Bird was bowled by a delivery that kept low, Sam Rainbird’s off stump was nicked by Copeland and captain Kurtis Patterson held a good catch at mid-off from Peter Siddle to wrap up the match

Brighton now hold talks to sign talent with £83m release clause in January

Brighton have now reportedly held face to face talks as they weigh up signing another young talent at the AMEX stadium in the January transfer window.

Brighton's big spending pays off

It was a step into the unknown for Brighton over the summer, as they spent heavily and appointed the Premier League’s youngest ever manager in the shape of 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler.

The Seagulls splashed out almost £200m on nine new players, with the likes of Georginio Rutter, Matt O’Riley, Mats Weiffer and Yankuba Minteh all making the move to the south coast.

That six of those nine featured in their seven most expensive signings of all time underlined the change in focus from Brighton, who have previously largely been known for plucking talents from relative obscurity and selling them on at massive profit.

However, now they appear to have built the spine of a side capable of regularly competing for the European places in the Premier League, and they have lost just twice so far this campaign, spurred on by Danny Welbeck’s impressive return to form.

AFC Bournemouth's MilosKerkezin action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Danny Welbeck

Such form puts them just two points behind second placed Arsenal and ahead of Manchester City on goal difference before Wednesday’s fixtures, with a spot in next season’s European competitions a real possibility at the AMEX Stadium.

Despite spending the third most in the Premier League over the summer, Brighton are still not done though, and now a fresh report suggests that they are once again looking to bolster their ranks in January.

Brighton hold talks over Brazilian teen

That comes as a report from Brazil claims that Hurzeler’s side have undertaken face-to-face talks over a potential move to sign Brazilian teenage talent Matheus Gonçalves, who currently plays for Flamengo. The 19-year-old has made just 13 top flight appearances in Brazil this season, scoring two goals in the process, but that has not stopped interest forming.

He has long been touted as a future star, with Talent Scout Jacek Kulig taking to X to hail his “incredible left foot” while he was still playing for his side’s U17 side. Now, RTI Esporte claim that Goncalves’ agent “met with representatives of Brighton” in Rio De Janeiro at the end of November, as the Seagulls explore a potential move for the teenager.

It is added that Flamengo are willing to let him leave in January and it is suggested that they will not hold out for his whopping £83m release clause in order to part ways with him. Meanwhile, Goncalves is “interested” in moving, but wants guarantees that he will not immediately be loaned out and will receive meaningful minutes.

That could well be a sticking point for any deal, with Brighton already loaning out Facundo Buonanotte this season and likely to also allow Evan Ferguson and Julio Enciso leave in the winter window due to a lack of gametime, while summer signing Brajan Gruda is still waiting for his first start, emphasising just how plentiful Hurzeler’s options in attack are.

Unless Goncalves changes his stance on a potential loan move, a deal in January seems unlikely.

McDonald backs Finch to regain form heading towards T20 World Cup

Interim coach reveals Finch has been working on his movement and that Australia are “building a team around him as a captain” for T20 title defence

Australia interim coach Andrew McDonald is in no doubt that captain Aaron Finch will lead Australia’s T20 World Cup title defence later this year on home soil despite Finch’s current lengthy form slump.Since the start of the last T20 World Cup in the UAE in October 2021, Finch has played 12 T20Is and three ODIs without making a half-century. Across 15 innings, including both formats, he averages 15.73 with a strike rate of just 97.92.Related

He also has nine single-figure scores in those 15 innings including back-to-back ducks in the last two ODIs against Pakistan. But McDonald said there was no question internally about Finch’s place heading towards the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.”From my end, there’s no conversation around the fact that he won’t be there,” McDonald said. “His form can ebb and flow like most players can and his ability to work through these patches has been significant in his career. We had the same conversation about David Warner leading into the T20 World Cup last time.”All these conversations are going to happen. Do we think he’s still good enough to play at this level? 100%, yes, and I think that’s as simple as it gets for us.”We’re building a team around him as a captain. It’s a pretty significant pillar to be discussing about not being at the T20 World Cup. From our end, we think he can still play at this level.”There is nothing new about Finch’s current woes. He was trapped lbw in his first three balls in each of the last two innings in Lahore. Shaheen Shah Afridi pinned him with a shin-high full toss first ball in the second ODI and Haris Rauf trapped him plumb with a reasonable straight delivery angled in at middle stump in game three. Rauf tried the exact same delivery to Marnus Labuschagne two balls later and the No. 1 Test batter clipped it wide of mid-on with ease for a boundary to highlight the clear differences in balance and footwork between the two players.Finch put his hand up in the aftermath of the ODI series loss to Pakistan, identifying that he was struggling for runs, and McDonald noted that the pair has been here before many times dating back to their time working together at Victoria and Melbourne Renegades.”He’s disappointed with his current form, there’s no doubt about that,” McDonald said. “Obviously that plays out on the big stage, but he’s currently probably not moving the way that he wants to move in terms of his mechanics.”That’s something that we probably need to rectify, and he’s working on it at training. It’s like anything, we’ve been down this path before. Sometimes, he can sort of get his legs crossed over a little bit and gets a little bit too much weight on that left leg.”It’s not an uncommon thing. So, hopefully we can work through it, albeit the timeframes in between these games over here haven’t created the time that you would like to be able to have to work on that.”Common theme creeping in there, but something that he’s been able to work through before, and we’re really, really confident that he’ll be able to work through that as his career continues.”Finch has one more innings on this tour, in Tuesday night’s one-off T20I, to find some touch before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.McDonald himself doesn’t yet know if he will lead Australia’s coaching group at the T20 World Cup despite being the warm favourite to take over the vacant head coaching position full-time, following the departure of Justin Langer.McDonald, who was the senior assistant, was seconded as interim coach for the Pakistan tour at short notice. Cricket Australia was initially expecting to have a full-time coach appointed by late March but the demands of the tour have meant that McDonald has had limited discussions with CA regarding the role, his candidacy, and what it will look like moving forward.”Obviously, the congested Test series didn’t allow that but with a few more gaps in amongst this one-day series, I’ve had the opportunity to speak to Cricket Australia,” McDonald said. “Whether that then becomes a follow-up conversation, we’ll wait to see.”It’ll be pretty much like the other people that have no doubt spoken to Cricket Australia as well. Within that, there was no great detail or clarity on what the role would look like. So that’s probably something that will be built in the next few steps. However many steps are there to the process.”I don’t really want to openly share what I think the job should look like because that might put people in difficult situations through the process. I think once the process is done, then I’m happy to talk about what I think it should look like, if I don’t have the job, or if I do have the job.”That’s something for later on down the track. I don’t really want to weigh into it while that process is going on.”

Arsenal must regret selling £35m ace who’s outscoring Trossard & Martinelli

Just when they thought things were beginning to go their way this season, Arsenal suffered another setback over the weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s side took on Fulham with the intention of closing the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool, but came away with just a single point after putting in a seriously disappointing display.

There were poor performers across the pitch for the Gunners, but the left wing was particularly dire, with neither Leandro Trossard nor Gabriel Martinelli offering much.

What makes this situation all the more frustrating is the fact that a player sold by the club in 2019 is now outscoring the pair of them.

Arsenal's 2019 sales

Before getting to the player in question, let’s look at how a few of the other departures from that summer have got on since, starting with midfield dynamo Aaron Ramsey.

The Welshman joined Italian giants Juventus on a free that summer but unfortunately failed to make a significant impact in Turin.

After 70 mostly substitute appearances across three seasons and a short-term loan to Rangers, the Caerphilly-born star joined OGC Nice for free.

He was given more game time in France, but after just a season, he rejoined boyhood side Cardiff City, where he remains today, although recurrent injuries have limited him to just 17 appearances since last summer.

Someone who’s had a bit more success since leaving the Emirates is Danny Welbeck, who also left for free and opted to move to Watford.

arsene-wenger-arsenal-danny-welbeck-transfer-value-injury-manchester-united-brighton

However, he only spent a season in Hertfordshire before his contract was terminated, at which point he made the brilliant decision to join Brighton & Hove Albion, where he’s been since.

In all, the former Arsenal forward has scored 32 goals and provided ten assists in 141 appearances for the Seagulls.

However, this season, his tally stands at an impressive six goals and two assists in 14 league games, which is a similar level of output to the player in question.

The former Arsenal star outscoring Martinelli & Trossard

So, while Welbeck and Ramsey left for free in 2019, Arsenal were able to make some money from departures, including the player in question, Alex Iwobi.

Yes, the Nigerian international, who came up through the Hale End academy, was finally sold that summer for a pretty sizable fee: £35m.

The Lagos-born dynamo had been a reliable, if unremarkable, performer for the club for quite some time, but when Everton made that offer, it felt too good to turn down, so the club decided to cash in on an academy product.

During his time at Goodison Park, the 28-year-old dynamo made 140 first-team appearances, in which he scored nine goals and provided 16 assists, but in September 2023, he returned to London, joining Fulham for £22m, including add-ons.

Since then, the “exceptional” talent, as dubbed by Statman Dave, has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 50 appearances, but this season has seen him reach another level.

For example, in just 17 appearances, he’s found the back of the net five times and provided three assists for good measure, mainly from the left wing, which makes the comparisons to Martinelli and Trossard so interesting.

In contrast, the Belgian has only scored four goals and provided two assists in 20 appearances, while the Brazilian has done marginally better, racking up four goals and three assists in as many games.

Ultimately, Martinelli and Trossard have shown in the past that they can reach the level required by Arteta and Arsenal, but so far this season, the pair of them are being outscored and outperformed by Iwobi.

So, while the club did well to get the money they did for him in 2019, it would have been interesting to see how he’d have got on in this system.

Nicholas Pooran appointed West Indies white-ball captain

The move follows Pollard’s retirement from internationals; Hope appointed ODI vice-captain

ESPNcricinfo staff03-May-2022

Nicholas Pooran has led West Indies in ten international matches•BCCI

Nicholas Pooran has been appointed captain of the West Indies white-ball sides, Cricket West Indies said in a release on Tuesday. Shai Hope will be his deputy in the ODI format. The move came after Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from international cricket last month.Pooran was the vice-captain in white-ball cricket for West Indies last year with Pollard leading the side. In Pollard’s absence, Pooran led the team to a 4-1 T20I series win against Australia at home ahead of the T20 World Cup last year. Overall, he has led West Indies in ten internationals – eight T20Is and two ODIs, winning four and losing six.”I am truly honoured to be appointed captain of the West Indies team,” Pooran said in the statement. “I am following the footsteps of several giants of the game who have created an amazing legacy for West Indies cricket. This is indeed a prestigious role, a pivotal position in the West Indian society, as cricket is the force that brings us all West Indians together.”To be named captain is indeed the highlight of my career so far and I want to drive the team forward to accomplish great things on the field for our fans and loyal supporters.”Related

'Just because I had one bad season, it's not going to change the player I am'

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo earlier this year, Pooran had spoken about how leadership came to him naturally and how he had picked up cues from Pollard from the CPL stint in 2017 with Barbados Tridents. “You have added responsibility and want the best for your team. At the end of the day it’s about winning the game of cricket, and if I’m in that leadership position, I have to do that extra work. The added responsibility has worked out so far for me,” he had said.Following his T20I debut in 2016, Pooran has represented West Indies in 94 white-ball internationals and has over 3300 runs across formats. The appointment comes at a time when he has begun flourishing at the top level – he scored close to 500 runs in T20Is last year while continuing his form this year with 348 T20I runs at an average of 49.71. He is currently playing in the middle order for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022.”We believe Nicholas is ready for the challenge of leading our white ball teams given his experience, performances, and the respect he has within the playing group,” Jimmy Adams, Cricket West Indies’ Director of Cricket, said. “The Selection Panel believes that Nicholas has matured as a player and were impressed with his leadership of both teams when Kieron Pollard had been absent. The experience he has gathered playing in various franchise leagues around the world was also a factor in the decision to recommend him for the T20 captaincy.”West Indies’ next international outing is the three ODIs against Netherlands in Amstelveen from May 31, which are part of the ICC World Cup Super League. Pooran will oversee two white-ball tournaments as captain – the T20 World Cup later this year and the Men’s Cricket World Cup next year.”Nicholas Pooran is a specially gifted cricketer, and the right person to take over the white ball captaincy,” Ricky Skerritt, CWI President, said. “We are confident that he will continue to climb the leadership learning curve speedily, and successfully. I appeal to all West Indies cricket stakeholders to give Nicholas the support and encouragement that he deserves.”

£41m centre-back now open to leaving club after Tottenham express interest

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly entering the market for new centre-backs in January, and one target is now becoming more tempted to leave in 2025 as Spurs add him to their shortlist.

Spurs target new centre-back after triple injury blow

As things stand, Radu Dragusin is manager Ange Postecoglou’s only natural senior central defensive option right now – with trio Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies all sidelined through injury.

Tottenham make approach to sign "very fast" £25m centre-back in January

Postecoglou has been forced to deploy versatile summer signing Archie Gray at centre-back to partner Dragusin in the last few games as a result, and while the teenager’s done well in a very unfamiliar role, Tottenham’s current injury crisis has exposed the lack of depth in their squad.

Speaking ahead of their blockbuster Premier League clash at home to Liverpool, Postecoglou dropped a transfer hint and suggested that Spurs could go into the market for more experienced players to complement the likes of Gray.

“Moving forward, we probably need to err on the side of getting a little bit more experience, just to help the group, because we’ve got very few at that kind of sweet spot in terms of ages,” said Postecoglou in his latest press conference.

“And we want to give the guys in their teens or early twenties the opportunity to keep growing. We need to make sure we put quality around them, so how we allocate the next resources may shift a little bit. But I’d hate to be sitting here now and saying we had an opportunity to sign Archie Gray at 18, and we passed it up because maybe we could have got a player who helps us for a couple of years.”

Postecoglou has held recruitment meetings with technical director Johan Lange ahead of January, by his own admission, and reports suggest that Spurs could go after a fresh centre-back option.

There are many potential options for Spurs in this regard, with French newspaper L’Equipe claiming that Tottenham have entered the race for RC Lens starlet Abdukodir Khusanov, who his club are attempting to sell in the winter as they attempt to raise funds.

Postecoglou has also asked Tottenham to consider a move for Getafe’s Omar Alderete, as per Spanish media sources, and they’re also believed to hold an interest in Feyenoord star David Hancko.

David Hancko open to leaving Feyenoord as Tottenham eye move

The Slovakia international was a key player for Arne Slot during his time at Feyenoord, and has continued to be a mainstay, but he’s now considering a fresh chapter away from the Eredivisie side.

That is according to TEAMtalk and journalist Rudy Galetti, who report that Hancko is open to leaving Feyenoord as Tottenham express an interest in signing him.

This transfer appears to be more likely for the summer as things stand, though, and despite contrary reports of a reduced price tag, TT write that Hancko will cost around £41 million to sign in 2025.

Slovakia'sDavidHanckoin action

That being said, the 48-cap star has a glowing reputation and could be worth the investment, especially if Postecoglou is after proven reinforcements at the back.

“He is so stable and can basically do anything. I just think he is a top defender all-round,” said ex-Feyenoord ace Tim de Cler to SoccerNews.

“I think he can easily handle a club just below the top six in Europe. Then I’m talking about a club like Atlético Madrid or Liverpool. He can certainly handle that.”
