Ipswich have another unreal "animal" who could be sold for more than Delap

It’s been a brutal start to their first Premier League campaign in over two decades, but things are starting to look up for Ipswich Town.

Kieran McKenna’s side picked up their first win of the campaign on Sunday, and with five draws already in the bag, the team sit outside the relegation zone in 17th place and on eight points.

It was a sensational win over an ultra-attacking Tottenham Hotspur side, and while there were unreal performances across the pitch, it was Liam Delap who once again grabbed the headlines.

The former Manchester City ace has been in incredible form for the Tractor Boys of late, but there is another star signed by McKenna who could be sold for even more money down the line.

Delap's current valuation

Ipswich paid City around £20m for Delap in July of this year, and while there was undoubtedly an element of risk in spending so much on a striker with just two Premier League appearances to his name at the time, he has since proven to be a bargain.

The Winchester-born dynamo has made 12 appearances for the Tractor Boys across all competitions this season and has already racked up an undeniably impressive tally of six goals and one assist, equating to an average of a goal involvement once every 1.71 games.

Moreover, he’s not just scoring against the weaker sides or picking up consolation goals either; he’s having a massive impact on the club’s point haul, with a brace against Aston Villa, the equalising goal against Fulham, and a goal and assist against Spurs on Sunday.

Unsurprisingly, such incredible form has attracted the interest of other teams across the country, and based on a report from Caught Offside last month, the Lilywhites are one of said sides, with the report claiming that Ipswich could be willing to part ways with their star striker for just €40m, which is about £33m.

Now, while that certainly feels low, it would represent a £13m profit, and given the club’s outlay over the summer, it might not be entirely unrealistic.

With that said, should the Tractor Boys sanction the sale of Delap for such a price – they shouldn’t, by the way – fans can rest assured that they have another up-and-coming star in the team who could make them a lot more money, at least based on the valuations of his contemporaries.

The Ipswich ace who could be sold for more than Delap

So, several promising Ipswich stars could become Premier League icons in the future, from club-record signing Omari Hutchinson to former Sunderland ace Jack Clarke, who’s yet to show his best in East Anglia.

However, the player in question is the club’s incredible left-back, Leif Davis, who joined McKenna’s revolution from Leeds United in the summer of 2022 for a fee reported to be in the region of £1m.

Since then, the Newcastle-born “animal”, as dubbed by former manager Scott Parker, has made 101 appearances for the Blues, in which he’s scored six goals and provided a massive haul of 37 assists, equating to an unbelievable average of a goal involvement every 2.34 games.

That level of return for a full-back has seen the Englishman become one of the club’s most important players, and after another barnstorming campaign last year, in which he racked up two goals and 21 assists in 44 games, he was rightfully voted the Men’s Players’ Player of the Year by his teammates.

So, with that said, why do we believe the 24-year-old star could one day net the Tractor Boys more money than the fee being banded about for Delap? Well, that’s down to the valuations of other attacking full-backs in the league.

For example, Spurs’ Pedro Porro, who has as many goal involvements as Davis this season, is currently valued at €45m by Transfermarkt, which is around £38m, and not only is he just as effective as McKenna’s talented left-back, he’s also just a year older, so why shouldn’t their valuation’s be similar?

On top of that, FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Premier League, consider Trent Alexander-Arnold to be the seventh most similar full-back to the former Leeds ace this season, and according to Transfermarkt, he’s worth around €70m, which is about £58m.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

Now, this isn’t to say that the 6 foot talent will be sold for a price quite that high.

Nevertheless, it does show that valuations for effective attacking full-backs are only growing in the modern game, and based on his performances over the last few years, Davis’ development doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon either.

Therefore, while Ipswich might make a small profit on Delap in the coming transfer windows, they could well make a monumental profit on their sensationally gifted left-back.

Após vice do Palmeiras, dirigente do Flamengo critica nível na final do Mundial: 'Um futebol tão feio'

Ange can ease defensive injury crisis by unleashing "outstanding" Spurs ace

After the third international break of the season, the Premier League is finally back, and Tottenham Hotspur have the small task of an away game against Manchester City to contend with.

Ange Postecoglou would likely have preferred an easier first game back, but given the Champions’ recent struggles, now could be as good a time as any to try and come away from the Etihad with all three points.

However, to make things even harder for the North Londoners, they will be without several of their key starters as injuries have taken their toll, especially in defence.

That said, while losing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero is far from ideal, the manager can instead start someone who impressed at the Eithad last season and has mountains of experience to call upon.

Spurs' injury problems

As things stand, Spurs will be without six players for the game this afternoon due to injury.

In attack, Postecoglou will have to make do without Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Timo Werner on the bench, who have been out for some time now, and Mikey Moore, who was ill before the international break and is still suffering the effects.

However, arguably, the biggest concern is in defence, as both starting centre-backs will miss out.

Van de Ven injured his hamstring in the League Cup clash with City last month, and unfortunately, the manager confirmed that he’ll remain out until the “middle of December.”

On the other hand, Romero injured his foot while on international duty with Argentina.

However, while his absence will be a massive miss, the prognosis isn’t as bad, with the Australian revealing in his presser that while he “won’t be right for tomorrow’s game,” the club are “hoping he’ll be right for next week.”

Overall, things aren’t looking great for the North Londoners ahead of what will undoubtedly be an incredibly tough encounter.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Nevertheless, there is a player Postecoglou can turn to, a player who’s already stood in for the club in this exact game before.

The Spurs ace who can step in against City

So, for those of you who remember, when Spurs travelled to the Etihad for a Premier League game last December, they were also without Van de Ven and Romero.

The former was due to another hamstring injury he suffered against Chelsea, and the latter was due to a straight red card he received in the very same match – when it rains, it pours.

So, with his arms tied, Postecoglou turned to his squad and opted to start Emerson Royal, who left in the summer, and a certain Ben Davies.

Spurs defender Ben Davies.

Despite playing two full-backs in the centre-back roles, the North Londoners came away from that game with a point in hand, and the Welsh veteran was a key reason why.

He put in an impressive performance against what was the best attack in the league and, by full-time, had earned a 7/10 match rating from respected Spurs writer Alasdair Gold, who wrote that he ‘battled away at the back’ and it was his ‘diving header that ended up setting Spurs away for Lo Celso to score.’

On top of already showing that he can step in and cope with Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut, the “outstanding” defender, as dubbed by the manager, has plenty of experience to rely on, which could help Radu Dragusin keep his cool alongside him.

For example, across his career, the 31-year-old veteran has made 337 appearances for the Lilywhites, 85 for Swansea City and won 89 senior caps for the Welsh national team, of which he’s captained nine times in the last year.

Ultimately, Spurs are going to be in for a challenging game this afternoon, made all the tougher thanks to Van de Ven and Romero’s absences, but with Davies in the side, they know that they can get a result at the Etihad.

ENTENDA O CASO

Jason Holder calls for greater intent to counter England's spinners

Former captain encouraged by displays but says West Indies need more consistency

Jason Holder hopes that West Indies’ uplifting end to the second T20I against England on Sunday can rub off on his team’s top-order, after a crushing defeat was transformed into a remarkable one-run loss thanks to the powerful ball-striking of Romario Shepherd and Akeal Hosein.West Indies’ ninth-wicket pair added an unbroken 72-run partnership in just 4.5 overs to run England agonisingly close, but the match was effectively lost when the top-order collapsed to 65 for 7, with England’s senior spinners, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, returning the combined figures of 5 for 48 in eight overs.Holder himself returned the figures of 4 for 7 to set his side up for a crushing nine-wicket win in the series opener on Saturday. But he was part of Sunday’s collapse, caught-and-bowled by Moeen for 1, and with Liam Livingstone potentially returning to England’s ranks on Wednesday to bulk out their spin options, he knows that improvements are needed in the batting.”I think we’ve just got to show more intent and intent does mean hitting the ball in the air or being reckless,” Holder said on the eve of the game. “We need to be more precise in our footwork and committing to certain things, not being tentative.”For me personally when you look at West Indies cricket and playing slow bowling over the last decade, a lot of it has been tentative. And that’s because you’re unsure sometimes, yes, but you can be unsure and still show intent and have a bowler guessing.”I think we’ve got to impose ourselves a little bit more and just show more intent with our footwork and just commit to more stroke-play.”Shepherd and Hosein certainly imposed themselves in their thrilling stand, striking nine sixes between them and leaving a sizeable dent in Saqib Mahmood’s figures in particular, as his final over was taken for 28. And Holder acknowledged that their efforts had been more than just a bout of hopeful slogging with the match all but lost.Related

“It all boils down to intent,” he said. “I think intent goes a very, very long way and it’s a funny word, because a lot of people tend to believe intent means swiping and being aggressive. But you could be showing that intent with your footwork and that’s how batting works.”West Indies came into the series off the back of an ODI loss to Ireland, and with concerns about their readiness of their new generation of players following an ending of an era at the T20 World Cup in November. But their displays in the opening two fixtures have been encouraging, even if Holder admits there’s still room for plenty improvement.”We’ve just got to keep challenging ourselves to play a complete game,” he said. “To be honest, I don’t think we were good enough in the field for the last encounter, and that probably hurt us at the end of the game.”I think if we’re a lot more clinical and consistent then we can make our lives a lot easier when we go to bat. Having said that, the challenge is out there for every individual to bring consistency.”I think consistency is something we have spoken about for years and I just think it’s time we start heading in the right direction. We just want to see some progression and development consistently.”

Essa identificação me fez dizer sim – confessou.

> TABELA – Confira os jogos do Timão no Paulista e os simule

Vítor Pereira também revelou uma conversa inicial com a diretoria sobre a torcida. Ele teve um gostinho da paixão da Fiel quando acompanhou a vitória do Timão contra o Red Bull Bragantino.

– Conversei com o Duílio e o Alessandro. A honestidade, o caráter da torcida, de gente que vive o futebol e o clube como se mais nada existisse. Fazendo do clube a própria família.

Excelente pessoa, conhecedor, e vamos evoluir juntos – encerrou.

Worse than Son: Ange must drop 5/10 Tottenham star who lost the ball 15x

Tottenham Hotspur dropped two points in the Premier League on Sunday as they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by London rivals Fulham.

The Lilywhites had taken the lead in the match in the second half thanks to a goal from Brennan Johnson, who finished from close range after a fantastic cross from Timo Werner.

However, a brilliant strike from Tom Cairney, who was later sent off for a poor challenge on Dejan Kulusevski, meant that the two teams had to share the spoils.

There were a few players who simply did not turn up and show the best of their abilities for Spurs in the match, including captain Heung-min Son.

Heung-min Son's performance against Fulham

In the absence of summer signing Dominic Solanke, Tottenham needed their skipper to step up in the number nine position, with Werner moved over to the left flank.

Unfortunately, Son did not provide the team with the quality that was needed to secure all three points against Marco Silva’s side, with a poor showing up front.

He started the match with a disappointing miss in front of goal after Werner appeared to put it on a plate for the forward, who could only find the body of Bernd Leno.

That was the striker’s only shot of the game it was one that he should have buried, although you could argue that the fact it was his only shot suggests that his teammates did not do enough to supply him with chances.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

One of the players tasked with supplying Son was attacking midfielder James Maddison, who should be ruthlessly ditched by Ange Postecoglou after an underwhelming showing.

Why James Maddison should be dropped

The England international should be dropped from the starting XI after his struggles in and out of possession against the Cottagers on Sunday.

With Kulusevski left on the bench by the Spurs head coach, Maddison was in the team to provide creative flair and quality in possession to break the away side down.

However, he ended his 85 minutes on the pitch with zero shots on target and zero ‘big chances’ created, as Postecoglou decided to take him off for the final 12 minutes – including stoppage time – with Tottenham chasing a goal.

As you can see in the table above, Maddison, despite being the creative midfield player, ended the game with as many chances created as his striker, whilst also failing to register a single effort on target. It was hardly a surprise he ended up being handed a 5/10 match rating by Football.London.

The former Norwich City and Leicester City wizard also struggled out of possession, as Fulham’s players found it too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

He was wasteful on the ball, losing it 15 times without a shot on target or a ‘big chance’ created, and Postecoglou must drop him from the side to bring Kulusevski back in next time out.
