Bowlers and Shubman Gill boost KKR's playoffs chances

The Sunrisers bowlers made a good fist of defending 115, with the debutant Umran Malik particularly impressive

Shashank Kishore03-Oct-20214:06

Deep Dasgupta: KKR’s bowling attack has been ruthless

Kolkata Knight Riders simply had to win, and they kept their end of the bargain thanks to a superb bowling performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad that moved them to 12 points with one game to play. Winning with just two balls to spare meant their net run rate didn’t jump by much, but their NRR is the best among all the contenders for fourth place, which means a win in their final game should see them through in all likelihood.Sunrisers off to disastrous start
Wriddhiman Saha was out second ball to a Tim Southee nip-backer but could have survived had he reviewed. Jason Roy, who has come in since David Warner’s ouster, looked to cut loose but was tied down by Shivam Mavi’s tight lines as he kept premeditating and missing. The frustration eventually got to him as he slapped a length ball straight to mid-on as the Sunrisers crawled to 17 for 2 in five overs.Mavi’s figures read 2-0-4-1 when Eoin Morgan decided to gamble with a third over for the fast bowler inside the first six. He erred and got picked off. Kane Williamson took him for 18, including four boundaries: a back-foot cover drive, a slap through point, a front-foot cover drive, and, to top it off, a neat little dab past short third. It gave Sunrisers a hint of momentum.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

Shakib makes an impact
Playing his first game of the second leg, and only his fourth overall this season, Shakib Al Hasan made a mark in his very first over, not with his left-arm spin, but with his athleticism. A quick sprint, a turnaround and throw in one motion at the bowler’s end had Williamson short of the crease as he tried to steal a single in the seventh over. It left the Sunrisers three down, leaving two youngsters – Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma – having to resurrect the innings. That wasn’t to be. Shakib had Sharma stumped with a slider in the 11th over, and finished with 4-0-20-1.The slide continues
Sunil Narine, brought into the attack in the eight over, maintained the Knight Riders’ stranglehold. In trying to break the shackles, Garg, who could have been out on 5 had Shakib taken a simple pop-back, was out slog-sweeping to deep square for 21 to give Varun Chakravarthy his first wicket to leave Sunrisers 70 for 5. Two monstrous hits from the threatening Abdul Samad, Rashid Khan’s failed helicopter shot, and Venkatesh Iyer’s towering presence as a boundary catcher highlighted the rest of the innings as Sunrisers limped to 115 for 8. The spin trio of Shakib, Narine and Chakravarthy ended with combined figures of 12-0-58-3.Shubman Gill drives towards mid-on•BCCI

Sunrisers tie down KKR top order
In UAE, the Knight Riders have so far been able to shellack bowling attacks upfront to reduce the pressure on their middle order. But here they were given a proper workout early on. Venkatesh Iyer was beaten for pace three times before he miscued an attempted hoick to Williamson at mid-off in the fifth over. Two overs later, Rahul Tripathi erred in picking length as he swatted a Rashid Khan delivery to midwicket.Enter Umran Malik
Talk about making a mark with raw pace. Umran Malik, the 21-year-old from Srinagar, let it rip as soon as he came on in the fourth over. Originally in the Sunrisers contingent as a net bowler and signed as a short-term Covid-19 replacement for T Natarajan, Malik bowled the fastest delivery by an Indian in IPL 2021 with the third ball of his first over, which clocked 150kph. Having made Iyer hop around, he then troubled Nitish Rana with his zip off the pitch in his second over. This spell coincided with the Knight Riders treading a cautious path, with Rana and Shubman Gill crawling along to add 9 off 25 balls at one stage. The asking rate was creeping up, with the Knight Riders 44 for 2 at the halfway mark. With three more overs to come from Rashid, it was by no means going to be a cakewalk.Gill shreds pressure to secure victory
After the famine came the feast as Gill changed gears. Using his feet to throw Holder off his lengths, he pulled him imperiously for two boundaries in the 12th over to signal a turnaround. He then took on Rashid and Malik, who slightly erred in trying to go full throttle. Gill soon brought up a half-century, his first of the season. When the Knight Riders took the strategic time-out at 84 for 2 in 15 overs, they were well on their way to victory. Gill and the struggling Rana departed soon after, but Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan calmly completed the job; Karthik’s bullet drive first ball and a cracking cut off Bhuvneshwar crushing any little hope Sunrisers may have had.

Liverpool now ready to make bold Chiesa decision as AC Milan eye 2025 move

Whilst much of Arne Slot’s tenure has so far been full of positives, one player has already given Liverpool plenty to think about with three Serie A clubs reportedly chasing his signature.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have been as ruthless as ever on the pitch, especially defensively, and head into their trip to face title rivals Arsenal in hope of maintaining their lead at the top of the Premier League.

"Cheeky" £24,000-p/w star favours Liverpool move after contract talks stall

He could replace Mohamed Salah…

1 ByTom Cunningham Oct 25, 2024

If there’s any way to cement your place as contenders rather than pretenders in the Premier League, then defeating Chelsea, RB Leipzig and Arsenal all in one week is certainly up there. And with two of those results ticked off, the Gunners now await Slot’s rampant Liverpool side.

The Premier League leaders don’t enter North London at full strength, however, with injuries to Diogo Jota, Harvey Elliott, Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa dealing Slot a frustrating blow. Chiesa’s absence is particularly frustrating and follows a worrying trend that could force the Reds’ hand.

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now willing to listen to loan offers for Chiesa in 2025 amid interest from AC Milan, Inter Milan and AS Roma. The Italian only just arrived in the summer from Juventus, of course, but it seems as though a return to Italy on loan cannot be ruled out.

That said, just 12 games into the season, any decision regarding their £150,000-a-week star may be slightly premature, especially given that he didn’t even have a pre-season to get up to scratch at either Juve or at Anfield. In the winger’s case, patience will be key.

Liverpool must be patient with "fantastic" Chiesa

Whether it’s Fabinho, Andrew Robertson or, more recently, Ryan Gravenberch, not all Liverpool signings slot straight in and hit the ground running. In fact, some of the best in the club’s history have taken plenty of time to settle in before bursting into life. And the same patience should be considered in the case of Chiesa.

The winger found himself frozen out at Juventus, which limited his pre-season to already hand him a disadvantage compared to the rest of his Liverpool teammates. It’s, therefore, only natural that Chiesa has struggled to keep up with the intensity at Anfield thus far. But that should eventually come as he regains full fitness before playing a part under Slot.

Of course, the aim should be to get the Italian back to his 2021 form, which earned the praise of Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who said via The Metro: “He’s just a fantastic footballer. The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament.

“It’s his pace, his drive. He’s the one who is the threat, he’s potent, he wants to run in behind. He’s that modern day striker who can play anywhere across the front line and he’s as comfortable out wide as he is through the middle. He unnerves defenders with that pace, he’s so direct.”

Bharat Arun: 'We can afford to field different teams for different formats'

India’s outgoing bowling coach looks back at his stint

Varun Shetty08-Nov-2021

Bharat Arun played a big role in making the Indian team, coached by Ravi Shastri, have a world-class bowling unit•BCCI

Bharat Arun is set to bow out as India’s bowling coach when the team’s T20 World Cup campaign ends on Monday, and he reckons India’s success in overseas Tests over the last two years has been the highlight of his work with the team. The end of Arun’s tenure marks the end of one of Indian cricket’s most successful projects – beginning during Ravi Shastri’s second stint as India’s head coach in August 2017 – which helped elevate India’s fast-bowling talent to a consistently world-class level in Tests.Through a diligent workload-management system and through innovative bowling plans, among them the “leg trap” employed against Australia earlier this year, India’s fast bowlers became the bedrock of famous victories overseas apart from having a significant impact even at home.Related

Shastri: India 'one of the great teams in the history of cricket'

'I cannot tell a bowler what to do or not do. I need to help them understand their own rhythm'

'Fearlessness is the guiding principle of this Indian team'

“There have been ups and downs but I think the team is in a much better position than when we started. Pretty happy about it,” Arun said before India’s last match at the T20 World Cup. “The highest point of the career would be the kind of bowling that we have – we set about winning a lot of Tests overseas. That is what we strived hard to achieve as a team and we went about achieving that.”I think the highest point would be the two back-to-back wins in Australia and also us, more or less, winning the series in England. Of course, there’s one more Test to go, but I think the performance of the team during this English series was outstanding.”Arun’s playing career ended when he was 29, and his foray into coaching came with a determination to understand the science and biomechanics of bowling, and to not propagate the “myths we were handed down through generations”. The increased fitness of India’s fast bowlers during his time, and the presence of a solid second string in the main bowlers’ absence speak to that.”All of us came together and said we have enough fast bowlers, but we need to create a lot more discipline in their attack and also to make sure they remain fresh throughout,” he explained. “That is the only chance of us winning. And also the team management and captain took a very bold step of always playing five bowlers at any given point of time.”Earlier we went in with only four bowlers and somebody who can also bowl. But right now we are going with five regular bowlers in any team that we have. So I think that is a first fearless step. Because we said that the batting group needs to step up, we need to take added responsibility if we need to win matches abroad, and we need to take 20 wickets all the time. So that went into us playing this combination of at least five bowlers in every match. The wicketkeeper being a very good batter also helps the cause.”India have pushed a number of bowlers up to the senior team, particularly over the last ten months or so. The likes of Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar have all stepped in with varying degrees of success as backups for the core of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and the two frontline spinners, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Arun mentioned Prasidh Krishna as one that sparks confidence as well, and said India’s next generation was in good shape. With the volume of cricket ever increasing, however, he hinted that it was time for India to use their reserves to make sure everyone continued to stay “fresh”, even if it meant playing different bowlers across formats.”Not only the volume of cricket that our country is playing but also remaining in the bubble and playing – I can guarantee that it’s not easy to be in the bubble and keep playing throughout the year,” he said. “They do need some breaks because I think even the mental health is going to be very important going forward. This is going to be the norm for us, at least for the next one year or two years. So it is important.”In our country we have a very good pool of fast bowlers, there is enough talent in our country. So we can afford to field different teams for different formats. That way it’s not only we understanding the different talent that is available, but it also keeps our bowlers mentally and physically very fresh.”

Fewer touches than Onana: 4/10 Man Utd ace who lost 8/9 duels must be axed

Unbeaten life in a post-Erik ten Hag world continued for Manchester United following their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Chelsea. There have been exciting games in the 4:30pm slot this season, yet a final, action-packed 20 minutes ensured it did not end up as the dire 0-0 it seemed destined to be.

United took the lead in the 70th minute, with Rasmus Hojlund cleverly winning a penalty, brought down by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Red Devils skipper Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from 12 yards to give United a lead.

There were just four minutes and 19 seconds between United’s goal and Chelsea’s equaliser, which came courtesy of Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian midfielder struck a volley sweetly from the edge of the penalty box, and it nestled into the back of the net past Andre Onana.

There were some chances to win it late on for both sides, but the game eventually petered out in a 1-1 draw. Although the standard of the game was quite underwhelming on the whole, there were still some standout performers for United.

United’s best performers vs. Chelsea

Undoubtedly the standout player for the Red Devils at Old Trafford was defender Noussair Mazraoui. The Morrocco international has played at right-back for much of the season but started on Sunday at left-back and did not look out of place. He defended well against the dangerous Noni Madueke and was impressive going forward.

He received a 7/10 rating from the Manchester Evening News’ chief United correspondent Samuel Luckhurst, the highest of the day. He was praised for being the Red Devils’ ‘only good performer’ in a poor first half overall.

Another player who stood out against Enzo Maresca’s side was Fernandes. It has been a poor start to the season for the talismanic United midfielder, but he has been much more his usual self in the last two games, scoring a good penalty and showing his creative side.

The Portugal international has some impressive stats, courtesy of Sofascore. The 30-year-old created four chances against the Blues and won an impressive nine from 14 ground duels. It was certainly a good showing from the United skipper.

As good as both Mazraoui and Fernandes were against Chelsea, there were some disappointing performers in a United shirt. Alejandro Garnacho was one player who struggled.

Garnacho’s stats vs. Chelsea

After a fast start to the season for Garnacho, he put in a lacklustre performance against the West London side. It was not for lack of trying. The 20-year-old’s effort cannot be faulted. However, his decision-making was frustrating at times, and he wasted some big chances.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Argentina international had two huge opportunities which could have snatched all three points for his side. The first one saw him well teed up by Fernandes, with lots of time and space to pick his spot. However, Garnacho could only send a soft shot into the gloves of Sanchez.

The second was tougher, a first-time volley which sailed over the bar, but perhaps a pass would have been the better option.

His stats show just how poor Garnacho’s performance was. The youngster had just 42 touches, fewer even than Onana. He managed to complete just 76% of his passes and completed one of four dribbles. Off the ball, the winger won just one from nine attempted duels.

Shockingly, Luckhurst gave him a 4/10 rating for his efforts against the Blues. He described Garnacho’s afternoon as ‘possibly his weakest performance of the season’, criticising him for the underhit chances he had.

It was a tired performance from the winger, who has played lots of football this season already. With two games left of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell, he may well decide to rotate the 20-year-old out of the side.

The likes of Amad Diallo are knocking on the door for a start, and that is something the legendary Dutchman might do to freshen things up.

Bangladesh's aggression fails, adds to picture of crumbling home advantage

Najmul Hossain Shanto claims defending was inadvisable on difficult Dhaka wicket

Bangladesh lost seven wickets in the 100-odd minutes they batted on the fourth afternoon, but looking at the number of chances they offered Pakistan, it could have been a far worse day. Amidst their dominance, the visitors managed to drop one catch and had one caught off a no-ball.In addition, the Bangladesh batters survived four close catching chances around the bat, two lbw shouts, and a run-out chance. Conservatively speaking, Pakistan had sixteen chances in 26 overs.Bear in mind that the visitors couldn’t use their fast bowlers due to the quality of the light. Some of Bangladesh’s dismissals also stood out due to the match situation, and their overall batting health. The openers were far too tentative, particularly Shadman Islam who has looked apprehensive in a short career as a Test opener. But the flipside didn’t work either. Captain Mominul Haque got run out after his team were 20 for two in the first half an hour. Common sense perhaps didn’t allow for that risky run, but Bangladesh were about to take it up a notch. Mushfiqur Rahim mistimed a slog sweep to short midwicket, one ball after he survived a close lbw shout.Liton Das ran out of his crease, but could only drive a return catch to Sajid Khan, who cleaned up with a six-wicket haul. Bangladesh’s choice of shots, particularly their preference for the sweep and the slog-sweep was a bit perplexing given their recent batting difficulty against Pakistan.Najmul Hossain Shanto later explained that they were trying to be aggressive since there was no point being defensive on the Shere Bangla National Stadium pitch.”I think it was always a difficult wicket for batting,” Shanto said. “We saw it from day one when Taijul and Miraz were bowling. I think we could have bowled better. I don’t think this was a 300 for 4 wicket. When we batted, we tried to play our normal game. There was no specific plan. Everyone played their natural game.”Everyone was aggressive because it was the type of wicket where you couldn’t continue to defend the ball. Run scoring was important. I think the defensive mindset gave more possibility of getting out. I think this is why the batsmen tried to play shots but unfortunately it didn’t come off.”Shanto said that they decided to play the sweep shot as it would have fewer risks on the spin-friendly wicket. “We were not overly aggressive. I felt that we played shots we are good at, but it wasn’t executed well. There is lesser possibility to be lbw on a turning wicket, so everyone relied on the sweep shot,” he said.Shanto said that the Bangladesh bowlers instead should have done better than allowing Pakistan to score 300 runs in the first innings.”I think our bowlers should have been more accurate, both spinners and fast bowlers. They should have contained the runs. There was help for the fast bowlers. I didn’t think it was a 300 wicket,” he said.Shanto said that he feels that Bangladesh can do better in the second innings but only when the overnight batters can get them over the follow-on mark.”I think we can survive (in this Test). We have to start well tomorrow. If Shakib bhai and Taijul bhai can add a few more runs, it will help us in the second innings. That’s the main thing: we have to bat well in the second innings,” he said. But the spin plan isn’t really working. Offspinner Sajid has used Dhaka’s conditions well, just like overseas spinners like Nathan Lyon, Rahkeem Cornwall and Rashid Khan have when they’ve routed the home side. Bangladesh pride themselves in being very strong at home, but in almost every series in the last five years, their plan to rely heavily on raging turners has backfired. The fifth day of the Dhaka Test is their last opportunity this year to show that they are masters (or at least survivors) in their own domain.
