Wood’s 55-ball ton is Derbyshire’s fastest in List A as Harry Came chimes in with half-century

A brilliant record-breaking maiden List A century by Tom Wood led Derbyshire to a 41-run victory over Nottinghamshire in the Royal London Cup match at Derby.Wood’s 55-ball hundred was Derbyshire’s fastest in List A cricket and the second-fastest in all formats for the county. The 27-year-old smashed 14 fours and three sixes in his 59-ball 109, which propelled Derbyshire to 258 for 6 in a game reduced to 27 overs by heavy rain the previous evening.Harry Came scored 57, his first List A fifty, and an unlikely target of 259 proved beyond Nottinghamshire, who were bowled out for 217 with Brett Hutton scoring 46 from 20 balls and Finn Hudson-Prentice taking 3 for 37.The start had been delayed by three-and-a-half hours while groundstaff dried out part of the square that was saturated when it was left uncovered overnight. After matting was eventually put over the wet areas, the match began at 2.30pm with Wood and Came going into overdrive after Nottinghamshire elected to bowl.Although Mitch Wagstaff skied Joey Evison to point, Came pulled Hutton for six and drove Liam Patterson-White over the long off boundary.Dane Paterson conceded 14 from his third over which also included four byes and Came pulled Evison for his third six before missing a sweep at Patterson-White.Brooke Guest was bowled advancing at Patterson-White but Wood pulled Hutton for a big six as 18 came from the 20th over.Alex Hughes was lbw trying to swing a full length ball from Paterson and after Hudson-Prentice lofted Patterson-White over long off for six, he was brilliantly caught by Peter Trego diving full length at mid off.Wood took three fours from Luke Fletcher and then drove Paterson for six as Nottinghamshire leaked 65 from the last four overs. His hundred came when he pulled Hutton for his third six and he left to a standing ovation when he was caught at short third man off the last ball of the innings. It needed something special for Nottinghamshire to deny Derbyshire their first victory in the competition and although Trego briefly threatened to match Wood’s pyrotechnics with 28 from 20 balls, they fell well short.Trego and Matthew Montgomery added 54 in five overs but an athletic catch by Wagstaff at point removed Montgomery and Trego miscued a pull at George Scrimshaw.Lyndon James was stumped coming down the pitch to Mattie McKiernan and Nottinghamshire’s fading hopes ended when former Derbyshire batsman Ben Slater drilled Alex Thomson to long off.Hutton enjoyed himself in the evening sunshine but could not save Nottinghamshire from their first defeat to Derbyshire in one-day cricket since 2004.

Australia bowler Ben Dwarshuis has replaced Chris Woakes in the Delhi Capitals squad for the rest of the 2021 IPL season.Woakes had pulled out of the remainder of the IPL because of personal reasons, joining Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Jonny Bairstow, Punjab Kings’ Dawid Malan and Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler in withdrawing from the tournament. Woakes had taken five wickets for Capitals in three games in the first half of the season.Dwarshuis has a haul of 100 T20 wickets – with a best of 4 for 13 – and a strike rate of 17.30. Dwarshuis, who plays for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, is the sixth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with 85 wickets in 69 matches.According to a statement from the Capitals, Dwarshuis will be “joining the Delhi Capitals team bio-bubble in the UAE soon”. This will be Dwarshuis’ second stint in the IPL after he was a part of the Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in 2018, though he didn’t get a chance to play.Separately, the Capitals players who were part of the Indian Test squad in England, reached Dubai on Sunday. Rishabh Pant, who had taken over as captain after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer picked up an injury during the first chunk of matches in April this year, R Ashwin, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav all tested negative for Covid-19 upon arrival. The Capitals are currently on top of the IPL points table with 12 points from eight matches. They resume their campaign against the Sunrisers on September 22.
Whilst many supporters will be desperate for the return of club football, Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna may benefit from the two-week break away from the Premier League.
His side are yet to taste victory in the league after their promotion last season, but the Tractor Boys have shown glimpses of heading in the right direction.
The fightback in the encounter against Aston Villa at Portman Road demonstrated that they are more than capable of competing with some of the very best sides in the division.
However, slightly more needs to be done for the club to secure their first win, with McKenna potentially using the recent international break to take his side to the next level.
One player has been an important part of his side over the last couple of years, with the talent still having a huge part to play in the squad during the first top-flight season in over two decades.
Wes Burns’ time at Ipswich Town
After joining from Fleetwood Town back in 2021, winger Wes Burns has enjoyed a ride up from League One all the way to the Premier League during his time at Ipswich.
During his first two seasons at the club, he registered a combined 41 goal contributions in England’s third tier, before achieving double figures in contributions last season in the promotion-winning campaign.
The 29-year-old scored a phenomenal trivela against Coventry City last campaign, with his subsequent strike winning the Championship’s Goal of the Season award for 2023/24.
Despite the heavy investment during the summer transfer window, Burns has remained a key part of McKenna’s plans – starting four of the seven league outings so far this season.
He’s yet to find himself on the scoresheet, but he remains a source of reliability for the Ipswich boss, as he hopes to pull off the impossible and secure the club’s top-flight status for another season.
However, despite his regular minutes for the Tractor Boys, his time for his country hasn’t been as impressive, with the winger failing to impress on Monday night.
Burns’ display against Montenegro
Wales made it two games unbeaten during the current international break, following up their 2-2 draw with Iceland with a 1-0 victory over Montenegro at the beginning of the week.
The suspension for Brennan Johnson allowed for Ipswich winger Burns to start from the off, giving the 29-year-old an opportunity to stake his claim under new boss Craig Bellamy.
However, his display failed to impress, with Burns struggling to make a positive contribution during his international display.
During his 69-minute display last night, the Ipswich ace only managed a total of 36 touches – completing just 19 passes throughout his nation’s victory in Cardiff.

The winger also lost possession ten times whilst completing just 50% of the dribbles he attempted – a disappointing figure given his direct nature at club level.
He did manage to get two shots off during his performance, but neither were on target; he ultimately needed to do better in attacking areas to trouble the opposition’s keeper.
Burns was subsequently handed a 6/10 rating from Wales Online’s Glen Williams, further highlighting his lack of impact for the Welsh.
Whilst it may have been a night to forget for the winger, there’s real hope that he can return to Portman Road to pick up his form from the last couple of months.
The remainder of the campaign will be tricky for McKenna’s side, with the 29-year-old potentially a key part of his plans if the club are to secure survival come the end of May.

Sob o comando do técnico Alex nessa temporada,o sub-20 do São Paulo fez 48 jogos, com 29 vitórias, dez empates e apenas nove derrotas.
Philpott played eight Tests before becoming a notable coach
ESPNcricinfo staff31-Oct-2021Former Australia legspinner and coach Peter Philpott has died at the age of 86 after a long battle with illness.Philpott’s eight Tests came in the span of less than a year from March 1965 to January 1966. In a five-Test series against West Indies he took 18 wickets then he claimed his career-best 5 for 90 at the start of the 1965-66 Ashes series before being dropped after two more matches and he quickly retired at the age of 31.Peter Philpott portrait•Hulton Archive/Getty Images
Overall in first-class cricket, where he played for New South Wales, he claimed 245 wickets at 30.31. He captained NSW during the 1963-64 and 1964-65 Sheffield Shield seasons. He also averaged 31.36 with the bat.Philpott went on to become a notable coach, including with Australia during the 1981 Ashes, with stints at NSW, South Australia, Yorkshire, Surrey and Sri Lanka. He also worked with England during the 1998-99 series when they were trying to overcome years of pain at the hands of Shane Warne.”Peter Philpott was more than just a wonderful cricketer, he was a man who had a rare enthusiasm for his craft, and for the game of cricket itself,” Richard Freudenstein, the Cricket Australia chair, said. “As teacher and coach, Peter had the generosity and wisdom to share his knowledge across the globe and helped shape the careers of countless cricketers. We extend our deepest sympathies to Peter’s family and friends, and to all those whose lives he touched.Lee Germon, the Cricket NSW chief executive, said: “Any player that has reached the heights Peter did, in playing for his country and captaining his state, will long be remembered by the game. After his decorated playing career Peter was an outstanding coach and educator who was involved in cricket in Sydney’s north for more than six decades.”My personal memory is being a young wicket keeper at the Peter Philpott coaching clinics in Christchurch in New Zealand. He also took me for my level 3 coaching course in Christchurch and I saw first hand his incredible coaching skills.”Philpott’s death follows those of Australia offspinner Ashley Mallett and allrounder Alan Davidson over the previous two days.”With the deaths of Peter Philpott, Alan Davidson and Ashley Mallett, this has been an extraordinarily sad few days for Australian cricket,” Freudenstein said. “We share our thoughts with all those across the world who are both mourning the loss and celebrating the lives of three men who had such an uplifting influence on the game of cricket.”
Manchester United managed to put their poor form from before the international break behind them and beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. It was a huge win for Erik ten Hag, who has been under constant pressure for some months, although that had reportedly intensified as United’s results took a turn for the worst.
However, his side were able to get just their third Premier League win on the board against the Bees, who actually took the lead at Old Trafford. It was a controversial goal, with United down to 10 men ahead of a Brentford corner after Matthijs de Ligt was instructed by the referee to go off due to a head injury. The visitors capitalised and found the back of the net from the set piece.
A superb second-half showing from the Red Devils saw them turn the game on its head. Alejandro Garnacho found the back of the net to equalise, meeting a superb cross from Marcus Rashford before Rasmus Hojlund gave United the lead. He got on the end of a delightful backheel from Bruno Fernandes, cutely lifting it over Mark Flekken to ultimately win the game for United.
There were some impressive performances from the Red Devils, but Garnacho was a particular standout.
Garnacho’s stats vs. Brentford
It has been an impressive start to the season for young Argentine winger Garnacho, in what is his second full campaign in senior football. As per football statistician Statman Dave, he already has eight goal involvement to his name this term.
The 20-year-old has actually gone a few games without a goal, but he managed to get back on the scoresheet at Old Trafford in what was a standout second-half performance.
His goal itself was eye-catching, meeting Rashford’s exceptional cross on the volley and firing past the Brentford goalkeeper, to score a crucial equaliser for his side. The rest of his afternoon’s work in the second 45 minutes was also impressive, showing hard work off the ball and direct, confident play when he has possession.
This is certainly reflected in his Sofascore stats. The United number 17 had 50 touches against Brentford, completing two out of four dribbles and winning five of his duels. He also created two chnaces, as well as scoring his crucial goal.
Whilst the youngster was one of United’s best performers on Saturday, there was another player who had a good day at the office, Casemiro.
Casemiro stats vs. Brentford
The Brazilian midfielder has been heavily criticised for his performances over the past 18 months or so, with pundit Jamie Carragher among those stating that he needs to “call it a day” at the top level. His performances have simply not been up to the standard he has shown over the past decade, but he looked much more like his old self against Thomas Frank’s Bees.
The veteran was superb as a ball winner in the middle of the park, using his physicality to his advantage, whilst also creating opportunities in the final third. Sadly for Ten Hag, the 32-year-old had to be substituted with an injury in the 88th minute, being replaced by Manuel Ugarte.
His dominant performance was certainly reflected in his stats at full-time. The former Real Madrid man had 77 touches, completing 84% of his passes, 100% of his dribbles and creating four chances. Casemiro also won an impressive 11 out of 16 duels and five from seven tackles.

His impressive showing was recognised by Soccer Saturday pundit Kris Boyd. He called the United number 18 “outstanding” for his efforts against Brentford, which is certainly backed up by his stats, while The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell also noted that he was “very good” on the day.
Alongside Garnacho, the ageing star was vital in helping to overturn United’s deficit and secure a vital win for both the club and their manager, with the Dutchman having desperately needed a positive result to lift the mood.

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Ten Hag will now be hoping Casemiro does not have a bad injury, and that he will be fit for United’s trip to Fenerbahce in midweek as they look to carry on their winning form.
