Cameron Bancroft overcame a blow to the jaw before play to score his third Sheffield Shield century of the season on a keenly-contested opening day against Victoria.Josh Inglis was unbeaten within sight of his century at the close as an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 90 with Joel Paris lifted Western Australia from a precarious 6 for 201 when Bancroft’s fine innings was ended by James Pattinson’s superb catch at deep square leg. Both teams retain hope of reaching the final next month although will need to win their two remaining matches.Victoria opted to bowl first and managed two breakthroughs before lunch with Sam Whiteman sharply held off an inside edge at short leg and Shaun Marsh edging to first slip. The afternoon session belonged to left-arm spinner Jon Holland as he claimed the huge wicket of Cameron Green and then had Hilton Cartwright caught behind – at the second attempt – against a delivery that jumped from a length. When Jake Carder was also well caught by Seb Gotch, giving Will Sutherland his second wicket, Western Australia were in trouble at 5 for 114 but the innings was revived by Bancroft and Inglis as they added 87.Bancroft, who was struck in the face by Cameron Gannon’s arm during warm-ups, brought up his century in style against Holland hitting and a six and then a four two deliveries later. After he had fallen to Mitch Perry, Victoria would have had hopes of wrapping up the innings in the day but Inglis and Paris counterattacked impressively. Inglis had 12 boundaries by the close and Paris had the confidence to drive the final ball of the day of Pattinson over mid-off.

Gerrard 2.0: Liverpool’s "fearless" teen is a bigger talent than Ngumoha

Trent Alexander-Arnold kissed the camera, just like Steven Gerrard. What a shame that such an iconic moment was taken from Liverpool, though supporters were quickly mollified as Old Trafford conceded three more very legal goals to condemn Manchester United to defeat.

Still, shame. Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool's linchpin, the homegrown superstar of his idol's ilk. Fans anxiously await news of a contractual resolution, for the 25-year-old is a free agent at the end of the campaign and free to talk to outfits like Real Madrid in January.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard

Liverpool need him to stay, and continue a legacy that could stretch to something of the same distinction as Gerrard, who is possibly Anfield's greatest-ever player.

Liverpool are growing a rich crop of academy talent right now but are not historically the most prolific of youth producers. Still, when they're good, they're good.

'Klopp's kids' played an instrumental role in winning the Carabao Cup last season, crucially performing during an injury-hit period to ensure the outfit's resurgence.

There's more to come, with the Merseysiders recently completing the signing of Chelsea youngster Rio Ngumoha, who might just be the next big thing.

Why Liverpool signed Rio Ngumoha

Getting Ngumoha's signing over the line has been a protracted ordeal, but well worth the extended effort. The 16-year-old's transfer from Chelsea to Liverpool has been something of an open secret since news first emerged in June, and now Arne Slot and the club's academy bosses can whoop at the addition of a prodigious talent.

Ngumoha, who is in the final year of his secondary school studies, will not be expected to play a part in Slot's senior set-up for several years, instead fostering his skills at youth level, but the indication is that he could be set to play a starring role in the Premier League in the years to come.

A fleet-footed and technical attacking midfielder, the teenager has drawn comparisons to Jamal Musiala and could be the long-term successor to a player like Dominik Szoboszlai, especially given Slot's preference to operate with a ten at the frontal point of the midfield.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Chelsea's scattergun approach to spending has seen an influx of up-and-coming players, though this might have an adverse effect on a talent such as Ngumoha, and when weighing up Liverpool's offer, it was a no-brainer.

Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah both burst onto the scene last year and have cemented regular first-team roles, and this will no doubt have captured the attention of a host of young players across the country.

Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah.

The thing is though, Liverpool are picky. Slot's ruthlessness in the dugout has seen a host of hopefuls loaned out or sold, limiting the options somewhat but also refining them.

Ngumoha has the quality to emulate Bradley and Quansah, and it's quite possible he has made a move that will have a significant impact on his future.

Sure, sure, he's tipped for great things, but believe it or not Ngumoha is not actually Liverpool's most talented teenager. Indeed, there's a lad named Trey Nyoni with the world at his feet, and he might just be the next Gerrard to burst onto the scene.

Trey Nyoni could be the cream of Kirkby's crop

Last season, Jurgen Klopp introduced Nyoni to life on the senior stage with a cameo against Southampton in the FA Cup, also perching on the bench in the Premier League during home fixtures against Brentford and Luton Town, though he did not feature.

Trey Nyoni scores during pre season.

He's been hailed for his "exceptional" quality by Liverpool reporter Neil Jones and enjoyed a key role in Liverpool's pre-season, scoring a peach against Sevilla and netting during his sole appearance of the current campaign, against Leicester City's U21s in the Premier League 2.

He also travelled with the first team for the opening day of the 2024/25 campaign. He didn't make the bench but watched on as Ipswich Town were defeated 2-0 after a scintillating second-half display. It would be a brave person to bet against Nyoni earning a minute or two under Slot's wing this season.

A dynamic and multi-functional midfielder, Nyoni has yet to discover his best position but invariably impresses when on the pitch, producing slick and stylish performances when sitting deep, dictating play, and crashing into the box with ferocity when in a looser, more forward-focused midfield role.

His balance in possession, his gliding gait, have suggested that he bears the technical quality to make a significant impact on the major stage in the future.

Couple that with his versatility in the centre of the park, and Liverpool might not just have their next Alexander-Arnold on their hands, they might even have a player cut from the same cloth as Gerrard.

Harvey Elliott, a Liverpool star who knows a thing or two about rising from the youth ranks to a prominent position at Anfield, has even waxed lyrical about the 17-year-old's potential.

He said: "Trey [Nyoni] has got everything in him. He showed it the other night, and he is fearless for such a young age, that goes without saying. He just needs to keep going and trust the process."

Gerrard was the ultimate midfielder, scorer, creator, combative presence, leader, legend. The Scouse-born superstar was truly one of a kind, scoring 186 goals and adding 155 assists across 710 appearances for the Reds, notably the catalyst of Liverpool's Champions League triumph in Istanbul, one of the greatest nights in sporting history.

jayden-danns-stefan-bajcetic-torres-gerrard-liverpool

Only time will tell if he makes it at Liverpool, but Nyoni is skilled beyond his years, proving throughout the off-season that he has the quality to make a significant impact at the club, already earning his professional debut.

He might be better than Ngumoha, but supporters should simply revel in the knowledge that they have two of England's most talented youngsters – either one could bloom into something special, and Liverpool know it.

Inter value Aston Villa gem at £60m but they believe he’ll sign for £30m

European heavyweights Inter Milan believe they can sign an Aston Villa star on the cheap in a player swap deal, according to a new report.

The Villans are back in Premier League action on Saturday as they welcome Everton to Villa Park, but ahead of that game, Unai Emery looks to have a battle on his hands to retain one of his best players.

BBC: Aston Villa may lose gem in cut-price exit despite contract offers

Aston Villa’s several attempts to retain one of their players may not be enough.

Now that the transfer window has shut, Aston Villa and Emery will be concentrating on what is to come on the pitch as they prepare for big Premier League and Champions League games. But while transfers may not be on the agenda right now, the club is looking to tie down some of their best players. One player that Villa want to agree a new contract with is Rory Wilson, a young striker in their academy.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The Premier League side want to secure the forward’s long-term future at the club, as the 18-year-old is in the final year of his contract. Should a new deal not be agreed, Wilson can leave for £228,000 in compensation if he moves to a European club.

Villa are said to have tabled several contract offers for the young striker worth five years, as they want to get the contract completed before the January transfer window. If a deal isn’t agreed before the turn of the year, Wilson will be able to speak to clubs outside of England and sign a pre-contract should he wish to do so.

There are said to be European teams already interested in Wilson, with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen keeping an eye on his situation. While Villa try and retain the services of Wilson, the club now also have a fight on their hands in keeping another one of their young stars.

Inter plotting £30m move for Aston Villa star

According to InterLive.it., relayed by Sport Witness, Inter Milan believe they can sign Aston Villa star Jacob Ramsey for £30 million. The Serie A champions have set their sights on signing the Villa midfielder as they eye a replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

Inter are looking to bring in his replacement next summer, and they have identified Ramsey as their main target. The Italian side believes the 23-year-old has a “high quality profile” but has “yet to explode”.

This report goes on to add that Inter would even try to lower the price further by including a player in the potential deal. The Serie A side also believe that, given his potential, they could buy him for that price and then sell him at some point for around €70 million, which is around £60 million.

Conway: Williamson watching you bat from gully is pretty intimidating

The left-hand batter strengthened his chances of a Test debut with a half-century in the intra-squad warm-up game

Devon Conway pushed his case for a Test debut even further by scoring an unbeaten 55 against the Williamson XI on the opening day of New Zealand’s intra-squad two-day warm-up game at the Ageas Bowl. After the Latham XI opted to bat, Conway and Tom Latham added 106 for the first wicket against the likes of Tim Southee, Jacob Duffy, Neil Wagner and Mitchell Santner. Both batters retired at the lunch interval and were replaced by Tom Blundell and Ross Taylor. However, the duo fell to Southee in quick succession, Blundell caught behind for 8 and Taylor lbw for 9.Wagner then bowled Kyle Jamieson for his first wicket of the day before Colin de Grandhomme and Doug Bracewell scored half-centuries.After the 75th over, Latham and Blundell again came to the middle. But this time Latham’s stay was a brief one with Wagner bowling him off the pads for 7. Rachin Ravindra then cut Jamieson’s second stint at the crease short and removed Matt Henry in the same over as the Latham XI finished the day on 289 for 6.Conway is competing with Blundell for the second opener’s role in the Test side. At the end of the day’s play, he said opening the innings with Latham was an exciting experience but also an intimidating one with Kane Williamson and Southee in the opposition.”Good opportunity to bat with him [Latham] out in the middle,” Conway said. “Fortunately, we are both left-handers, so I could just feed off a couple of things that he was doing. He is very experienced, knows his game inside out. Just watching how he goes about things, not only in today’s game but in training and his discipline around, his shot selection, the way he plays his game, it’s pretty awesome to learn from. Just to be there at the other end was pretty exciting and good learnings throughout the day.”You’ve got Kane Williamson there at gully watching you bat. That’s pretty intimidating, one of the best guys watching you go about your business. Then also fronting up and facing guys like Tim Southee, who have been there for a long time. I didn’t get the opportunity to bat with Ross Taylor today, which was a bit unfortunate, but hopefully one day I’ll get that chance.”Conway has played most of his first-class cricket batting at No. 3. Out of his 174 innings in the format, he has opened only 19 times but if he makes his debut in the first Test against England, it will be most likely as an opener.”There’s probably not too much difference to be fair,” he said. “Sometimes if you’re batting three, you could be in in the first over. So it’s just about backing your game plan, backing the way you play, and just staying true to that as much as you can, regardless of the situation. It’s just about adjusting to the surface and being positive throughout.”I like to see myself as a guy who bats anywhere really. If the opportunity presents itself to bat up the order in Test cricket or ODIs or Twenty20, I would be happy to take that with both hands. It’s just a number. At the end of the day, it’s about adjusting to different scenarios and situations of the game and just batting accordingly.”
