Manchester United have not had a permanent centre forward for the past decade who's truly made the position their own.

Many top strikers have tried, and many have failed to massively impress, with the best in recent times probably being Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede only had a short stint at Old Trafford, making 53 appearances across all competitions, but he left with 29 goals and three trophies.

With Rasmus Hojlund being the only senior striker at the club, it’s no surprise to see that Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to bolster the position, with one Ibrahimovic-esque ace on his wish list.

Man Utd look to bolster their attack

As per reports from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport via GiveMeSport, Man United are looking to sign Joshua Zirkzee.

It’s stated that the Dutch forward has a £34m release clause in his contract, which means plenty of clubs are interested in signing the attacker.

Some of those include the likes of Juventus and AC Milan, while Arsenal are also keeping an eye on the striker.

However, it’s stated that the two Premier League sides will have a stronger chance of securing his services due to their superior funds.

How Zirkzee would fit in at Man United

For £34m, Man United would be getting an absolute bargain this summer if they were able to convince Zirkzee to join them.

The 23-year-old has been truly instrumental in the Bologna side that achieved Champions League football this term, starting up front 32 times in the Serie A.

Over these matches, the number nine scored a relatively impressive 11 goals while also providing four assists, meaning that he’d be United’s top scorer in the Premier League this season.

However, the Netherlands ace supplies much more than just goals and assists, with his overall game making him such a unique player.

As you can see from the table above, Zirkzee is the definition of a complete centre forward who clearly has a different play style from current first-choice forward Hojlund.

The Bologna gem is the type of striker who’d willingly drop deep to get involved with play while having the technical ability to work in tight spaces, meaning that it could be an option for the two young forwards to work in tandem.

Yet, on top of the statistics above, football analyst Ben Mattinson has described Zirkzee as an “insane athlete” due to his 6 foot 4 build and power, outlining him as a similar outlet to Ibrahimovic.

But what makes Zirkzee so special is that – in the words of Mattinson – he’s “6 foot 4 but turns like he’s 5 foot 9" with his 'insane technique' being another reason why he’s been compared to former Paris Saint-Germain icon.

The Swedish striker also has a similar physique to the Serie A ace, standing at 6 foot 5, and the duo are known to be composed finishers who know how to put the ball in the back of the net.

That said, the main difference between the two is that Zirkzee is much more mobile and active than the former United attacker, taking players on with ease and also putting in a shift defensively, making one tackle per game.

Overall, signing Zirkzee for that fee is a steal, and given that he can comfortably play alongside or in place of Hojlund, United have all bases covered going into the new campaign.

During his time in the Spanish capital, he has won six Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, five Spanish Super Cups, four UEFA Super Cups, four Club World Cups, one UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, one Best Fifa Men's Player award, and one Ballon d'Or – not bad for the league's worst signing.

Ultimately, the Croatian legend was impressive as a Tottenham player but reached an entirely new level at Real, and while Romero might be tempted to see if he can do the same, Daniel Levy and Co must do all they can to help him reach his maximum potential in North London, not Madrid.

The Spaniard watched on as his side racked up an impressive 89 points, which would have been enough to seal a league title in the majority of previous seasons, but this imperious City side led by Pep Guardiola have well and truly set a very high standard.

Arsenal also scored 90-plus goals in the top flight alone, with Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz bagging 41 between them across all competitions. However, despite their potency in the attacking areas, it remains the case that the Gunners want to strengthen going forward.

Indeed, sporting director Edu Gaspar has reportedly set his sights on a new striker for Arsenal, and it is also believed they could add another general attacking player. Arteta is personally driving a move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, according to some reports, but the Spaniard's reported £200,000-per-week salary could be a sticking point.

They have other options as alternatives, like Paris-Saint Germain ace Xavi Simons. The 21-year-old, who is currently representing the Netherlands at Euro 2024, was very impressive on loan at Leipzig last season – and this has alerted a host of prestigious sides.

Arsenal make contact with PSG over signing Simons

As per CaughtOffside, Arsenal have made contact with PSG over Simons, to find out the conditions of a deal as they look to take him on loan. However, they're not alone, as Manchester City, Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all competing as well.

Simons – who's been called a "complete" player by Dani Olmo – is valued at around £52 million, according to some reports, but the north Londoners don't wish to engage in permanent deal talks and instead want the chance to take him temporarily.

“It will be interesting to see if that’s what Enrique wants, but based on what he’s said publicly, he seems very keen on Simons’ profile," said CBS football correspondent and Ligue 1 expert Jonathan Johnson on Simons' future in the French capital.

"There’s been talk of potential offers from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona, but I think it would have to depend on the offer, because I don’t really see PSG doing business unless there’s an offer that’s deemed too good to turn down.

A review of the coaching set-up at Warwickshire is underway with the expectation there could be changes in personnel.Warwickshire finished without a win in their five Bob Willis Trophy matches in 2020 and failed to qualify for the quarter-final stages of the T20 Blast. In 2019, Warwickshire just survived in Division One of the County Championship – they finished seventh – and failed to qualify for the knock-out stages in either white-ball competition, finishing eighth in the North Group of the Blast and seventh in the North Group of the One-Day Cup. For a Test-hosting ground with a large playing budget and illustrious history, that is not deemed adequate.While Paul Farbrace, the club’s sport director, declined to clarify his plans when approached by ESPNcricinfo, it is understood he has reservations about the policy of employing a coaching set-up dominated by recently-retired Warwickshire players.All four of Warwickshire main coaches – Jim Troughton (head coach), Ian Westwood (second team coach), Tony Frost (batting coach), and Graeme Welch (bowling coach) – played for the club. While several of the individual coaches are well regarded – Welch, in particular, has an outstanding reputation and has several spells as a consultant with the England team – there are suggestions that the combination has created an overly cosy environment. It is understood there was some contact between Farbrace and Sussex about the vacant head coach role at the club following Jason Gillespie’s departure, but it is thought Farbrace will not be pursuing that opportunity.Meanwhile, history has repeated itself after Ismail Mohammed, a young batsman of whom much is expected, has left the club to join Worcestershire. Ismail, a nephew of Moeen Ali, is a 16-year-old who has made a good impression in the Birmingham League. But, feeling his opportunities were limited – he was only recently added to the club’s academy – he has followed the path taken by Moeen at the end of 2006 and moved to New Road. His brother, Isaac, remains part of Warwickshire’s youth set-up.Despite their position in the middle of a large, ethnically diverse city, Warwickshire currently have no players or coaches of BAME background on their senior staff. The club are confident they have things in place to improve this, however, with around 50 percent of their pathway players and almost all of their academy squad coming from such backgrounds.
