Aston Villa man with fewer touches than Martinez struggled vs Ajax

Aston Villa’s European knockout adventure started off with a drab 0-0 draw against Ajax last night.

In truth, it was a game that neither side wanted to lose, but the result sets up a fantastic second leg at Villa Park next week.

The entire match saw very little action in the final third, with the hosts dominating the ball with 60% possession. Both teams registered just four shots each all game, which really highlights how poor the attacking play was.

Everyone on Unai Emery’s side struggled to put their stamp on the game, but there was one player in particular who struggled to have any real impact, even having fewer touches than Emi Martinez.

Emi Martinez’s performance vs Ajax

In truth, the World Cup winner didn’t have very much to do on the night, but he did his job well, including taking his time to do pretty much anything.

Birmingham Live gave the Argentine shot-stopper an 8/10 rating for his performance, claiming that Martinez was the man of the match.

The number one made one important save in the tie, preventing 0.2 goals and taking on a proactive approach with one clearance and three runs out.

On the ball, the goalkeeper was pressed at times and gave it away cheaply on a few occasions, with a pass accuracy of 72%, but he did have 52 touches throughout the game.

A clean sheet topped off a respectable showing from the former Arsenal man, who was one of the few real positives on the night.

ByTom Lever Mar 6, 2024 Youri Tielemans’ game in numbers

Despite Moussa Diaby and Morgan Rogers both featuring in the starting lineup, Youri Tielemans continued to play in the second striker role, even though he’s a midfielder by trade.

The Belgian ace completed the full 90 minutes, but it was not a memorable performance, and Birmingham Live rated his performance a 6/10.

Although he was the second-furthest player forward behind just Ollie Watkins, Tielemans did very little to impact the game in the final third, and, in truth, the 26-year-old was a passenger for the most part.

As you can see by the table above showcasing his key statistics from the game, the former Leicester City gem failed both of his dribble attempts, had no shots, and made one key pass, which proves he was ineffective on the whole.

Tielemans would endure long spells without the ball, hence the 32 touches, 20 fewer than Martinez in net, but when he did get the ball, he was wasteful, boasting a pass accuracy of 68%.

Unfortunately, the number eight also offered nothing from an out-of-possession perspective, making zero defensive actions and winning just two of his seven duels.

It’s quite clear that it was a night to forget for Tielemans, but the Villa faithful will be confident of progressing at Villa Park next Thursday.

Nevertheless, Emery's attention will now switch to the huge game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and the former Leicester star may have played his way out of the manager's thinking for that clash.

Billy Godleman's Derbyshire may well relish the chance to tweak a few noses on Finals Day

Derbyshire have never been to Finals Day, and yet you sense this is simply part of the motivation

Edgbaston on the third Friday afternoon in September.A few moments ago Dan Christian was chatting about Nottinghamshire’s second appearance in three years at the Vitality Blast T20 Finals Day. Christian has played for Australia, Barbados Tridents, Brisbane Heat, Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Multan Sultans, Rising Pune Supergiant, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Trinbago Knight Riders. In a few minutes’ time Moeen Ali will be explaining what it might mean were Worcestershire to retain the trophy on Saturday. Moeen has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and was in England’s World Cup winning squad. At the moment, though, Billy Godleman is talking about the same occasion. Godleman plays for Derbyshire.Derbyshire have never been to Finals Day.And yet you sense this is simply part of the motivation Godleman enjoys: a chance to tweak a few noses. His eyes are bright with enthusiasm as he talks about it all.”I see it as an opportunity,” he said. “We have no pressure or expectation on us. At the start of the competition no one expected us to get to the quarter-finals let alone a semi-final. So we are happy to go fly under the radar and turn up and play some good cricket on the day.”Godleman makes a good point. Derbyshire needed to win their last three matches in the North Group to qualify for the last eight. They did so. They travelled to Bristol for the quarter-final in which they were expected to lose to Gloucestershire. They won. And tomorrow they will take on Essex in the second semi-final at Edgbaston. One gets the impression that Godleman cannot wait to get stuck in. But he is by no means the only member of Derbyshire’s squad bristling at such a prospect. The Finals Day freshmen have been coached to excellent effect this year by Dominic Cork, another cricketer who relished taking the world’s expectations and depositing them in the nearest incinerator.”Corky played for the club for the majority of his career,” said Godleman. “He knows what it is to be a Derbyshire player: the underdog who has the opportunity to ruffle a few feathers among the bigger counties. That is something we relish.”He’s brought lots of energy and for me as captain he has been incredibly insightful,” he continued. “I’ve been very fortunate to know Corky for a number of years now and he’s one of the finest cricket brains that you could wish to meet. For me to have access to his cricket nous on a one-to-one basis as coach-captain has been very beneficial. Corky is very much about us going out and playing our best cricket with freedom. His view is that cricketers play their best when they have that freedom and that’s what we have tried to create in this campaign.”Plainly it has worked so far and it will be fascinating to see how Derbyshire’s players react when presented with a full-house at Edgbaston and the pressures of the biggest occasion most of them have encountered.”We like to think we have a method and we are just really excited to have the opportunity to play a semi-final and maybe a final as well,” said Godleman. “There’s a range of emotions and everyone’s different. There is a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of excitement, a lot of nerves and a lot of apprehension but what I’ve sensed from the group is that the overriding emotion is the excitement of the opportunity to play in Finals Day.”And should Derbyshire younger players need even more experienced advice tomorrow afternoon, the squad also includes Ravi Rampaul, whom Godleman rates as one of the best bowlers in the tournament, and Darren Stevens, 43-year-old Kent loanee, who this week scored 237 and took seven wickets in that side’s 433-run thrashing of Yorkshire.”Stevo’s on fire,” said Godleman. “Every time he goes out there he gets either a five-fer or a double hundred. He’s another really good cricket man. He hasn’t played as much as we expected or he expected but that’s not to disregard what he’s brought off the field and the way he shares his experience with the guys. That’s been a massive boost for us.”So we are all set up for another Finals Day. Everyone is wondering whether Worcestershire can win back-to-back trophies; or whether Nottinghamshire can rescue their season; or whether Essex can win the first of what may be two pots in a week. Of course Derbyshire can’t do it. No chance.”Please keep taking like that,” Billy Godleman might reply.

Namibia decimate Coetzer-less Scotland

Scotland looked deflated coming up against a rested Namibia unit, who stormed to their first win of the tournament by 24 runs

With captain Kyle Coetzer sitting out still feeling the effects of dehydration after a draining half-century in Monday’s win over Papua New Guinea, Scotland looked deflated coming up against a rested Namibia unit, who stormed to their first win of the tournament by 24 runs.Namibia’s top-order failed once again after opting to bat first at the toss, reduced to 46 for 3 in the seventh over. But captain Gerhard Erasmus helped steady the innings after entering at No. 5 to build a 49-run stand with Craig Williams. Erasmus was the aggressor, slogging two straight sixes in his 37 off 26 balls before he sliced a slog to short third man off Tom Sole’s offspin in the 14th.JJ Smit was sent in at No. 6 and provided a crucial finishing kick to the Namibia innings. The allrounder struck four straight sixes off Sole, Safyaan Sharif and Josh Davey in a blistering 43 off 22 balls before falling in the 19th over, a knock which earned him Man-of-the-Match honours before he fell off a full toss to deep midwicket. Nine more runs off the final over took Namibia to 159, making 99 off the last 10 overs to reach a total that was more than enough on a ground with an 80-meter boundary to the western side which has made quick scoring difficult all week.Craig Wallace came into the XI and opened in the absence of Coetzer but was knocked over second ball by Ben Shikongo who clipped the top of the stumps with a back of a length ball to beat Wallace’s slog. An even bigger blow was struck in the field nine balls later when George Munsey, Scotland’s most consistent batsman at this tournament, was run-out after taking on Niko Davin’s arm from the 80-meter boundary at deep backward square but wound up well short of the relay to Smit over the non-striker’s stumps coming back for a third run.Calum MacLeod and stand-in captain Richie Berrington did well to reconstruct the innings with a 48-run stand. Scotland were 64 for 2 at the 10-over mark, four runs ahead of where Namibia had been, but constant rotation of the bowling unit by Erasmus and disciplined lines built enough pressure for the Scotland innings to burst. Berrington fell to an excellent diving catch at deep midwicket by Jan Frylinck to end the stand, sparking the first of five consecutive men caught on the boundary as the required run rate climbed forcing Scotland to hit out in vain.MacLeod eventually fell to end the 15th, driving Frylinck to Christi Viljoen at long-off for a stodgy 39 off 46 balls. Scotland were reduced to 107 for 8 when Mark Watt was caught at short fine leg failing to get elevation scooping a full toss from Viljoen. But Sharif and Davey scored 28 off the last 15 balls to mitigate the net run rate damage Scotland took with the loss, something which could be crucial by the end of the group on the net run rate tie-breaker.

£210,000-a-week star packs his bags with Chelsea favourites to sign him

A £210,000-per-week star is believed to have his bags in hand and ready to fly to England, with Chelsea in pole position to seal a deal for the player.

Chelsea's transfer plans for this summer – explained

There are a few positions which the club are keen to strengthen this summer.

Suggestion Chelsea could rid themselves of Lukaku in swap deal for striker

The Blues still have the Belgian on their books.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 20, 2024

Whether that be in aid of under-fire boss Mauricio Pochettino, or a potential new head coach next season, it is believed that Chelsea are eager to bring in a new centre-back as one of the goals – with veteran Thiago Silva on course to leave when his contract expires this summer.

Another key area of the squad which Chelsea wish to reinforce is at centre-forward, with the Blues currently lacking an out-and-out striker who can net 25-plus goals per season.

Nicolas Jackson has performed in flashes but is still pretty raw, and Pochettino has been forced to rely on the likes of Cole Palmer for most of Chelsea's final third threat over the course of 2023/2024.

This has led to reports that Chelsea are keen to add Victor Osimhen to their ranks, but the Nigerian will be highly sought-after as other top European sides search for a world-class new number nine.

Osimhen has been a star Serie A player over the last few seasons, and he recently signed a new contract which includes a £113 million release clause, as Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis seeks to make as much profit from his potential summer sale as possible.

"I know you're going to come to Chelsea," said former midfielder John Obi Mikel, urging his countryman to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

"I'm telling you, I'm going to be the agent to broker that deal! You are 100 per cent going to Chelsea next season. I'm going to make sure that deal happens because we are crying out for someone like you. Since the big man left the club, you know Didier Drogba, my teammate, we haven't had anybody with that figure, that stature, that personality.

"Someone who can score goals in big games and somebody we can depend on scoring goals, and I just feel like you are that person, you will fit right in at what we need to achieve at the club."

The 25-year-old, now on a base wage of around £210,000-per-week following his new deal, is apparently eager to swap Italy for the English top flight.

Osimhen has bags packed with Chelsea favourites to sign him

According to Calciomercato, as translated by Sport Witness, Osimhen has his bags in hand and is ready to move with Chelsea in pole position to seal a deal for him.

Osimhen is also attracting interest from PSG, as they look to make serious investments following the "post Mbappe era", but it is Pochettino's side who are favourites as things stand.

The African could be a stellar capture for Chelsea, but it appears they will have to pay the full value of his release clause, according to this report.

Man Utd eyeing £17m wildcard as the perfect Branthwaite alternative

With Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe now calling the shots, Manchester United are set to undergo a complete overhaul this summer.

Movement has already occurred behind the scenes, with Omar Berrada becoming the club’s new chief executive and plenty of backroom staff departing.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, new owner of Manchester United at a Premier League game

That is said to be the case for plenty of the current squad members at Old Trafford, with outgoings expected to potentially hit double figures.

However, those leaving will obviously make room for arrivals, with a centre back one of the key positions that’s been identified as a priority signing.

Man Utd’s search for a centre-back

According to reports from Colombia via TuttoMercato, Man United are set to be in a tussle for the signature of Jhon Lucumi.

The 25-year-old defender currently plays his football at Bologna in Italy, impressing enough to gain interest from the Red Devils and Spanish giant Atletico Madrid.

It is estimated that a fee of around €20m (£17m) would be enough to secure the Colombian’s services, but the Serie A side will look to gain as much funds as possible.

That said, the potential problem for United is that Lucumi’s performances in the Copa America could see his worth increase, but not to the level of United’s other centre-back targets.

Man Utd have begun talks to sign a £50m Harry Maguire replacement

Erik ten Hag is keen to reinforce his backline next summer.

ByTom Lever Mar 26, 2024 Man Utd's dream Jarrad Branthwaite alternative

Another player on the list of potential recruits is Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, who is set to be on the move at the end of the season.

A report from Mike McGrath via The Telegraph this week stated that United are interested in the defender, but his signature would cost a fee of at least 50m.

jake-o'brien-jarrad-branthwaite-everton-opinion

Obviously, that figure is a minimum, and it could rise if the Red Devils do decide to sign the 21-year-old, whereas the perhaps wildcard, lesser-known Lucumi could prove to be much better value for money based on his performance this season.

The defender only joined Bologna last season from Genk, starting 33 league games in his first campaign, but he’s really found his feet during his second campaign.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson is particularly a fan of the former Deportivo Cali ace, calling him “ridiculously impressive,” further stating that he’s “one of the most composed I’ve seen in 23/24. Insanely secure on the ball, receives bad passes and deals with them so calmly.”

As you can see by his most recent performance against Empoli, Lucumi is the definition of a complete centre-half, and despite being left-footed, he has played as a right-centre back this campaign.

The Colombian would be an excellent partner for Lisandro Martinez, with his technical ability providing Ten Hag’s side with much more control, as shown by his 103 touches, 90 passes, and 97% pass accuracy.

The 6 foot 1 defender is also extremely dynamic, and he could definitely deal with the physicality of the Premier League, as shown by his 75% ground duels win rate.

Overall, Lucumi would be a perfect centre-back for Man United, and at a cheaper price, he could be the perfect alternative to Branthwaite.

Nowhere-to-hide test for Bangladesh as India look to extend stellar home record

A number of imposing facts stare Bangladesh in the face as they face off against the world’s best Test team

The Preview by Karthik Krishnaswamy13-Nov-2019

Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara will hope to cash in on the good batting track in Indore•PTI

Big pictureThirty-two Test matches, 26 wins, five draws, one defeat. That’s India’s home record since the start of 2013. They have just dismantled South Africa in the most ruthless manner imaginable. They have won every Test so far in their 2019-21 World Test Championship cycle so far, and have 240 points from two series. All those imposing facts stare Bangladesh in the eye as they begin a two-match series against the world’s best Test team. As if the odds for them weren’t bad enough, Bangladesh are without two of their most talismanic cricketers, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. No one is giving Bangladesh a chance to get anything out of this series, but tours like this one can help cricketers discover hidden depths within themselves. They will need to be prepared for long and unforgiving days on the field, and nowhere-to-hide examinations of their batting techniques, but if they embrace the challenge, they will view it as a chance for a group of talented young players to make a name for themselves, and for a couple of older heads to burnish their reputations.Form guideIndia WWWWW (last five Tests, most recent first)
Bangladesh LLLWWIn the spotlightSince his all-conquering 2018-19 tour of Australia, Cheteshwar Pujara has scored 205 runs in five Tests at an average of 25.62. His form shouldn’t be a cause for undue worry for India, given that he scored two important half-centuries in the recent series against South Africa, but Pujara won’t be satisfied until he’s back to scoring hundreds regularly. Worryingly for Bangladesh, he broke a 14-innings century drought the last time he played in Indore.Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam have thrived on turning tracks in Bangladesh, as their home averages of 21.44 and 27.04 suggest. Away from home, though, both have averages in the 50s. The two spinners can expect a bit of help from Indian pitches, but not a whole lot, and will be up against a line-up that will take full toll of every little error. With Shakib not around, Mehidy and Taijul will need to be at their absolute best if Bangladesh are to have any hope of achieving a semblance of control over India.Saif Hassan cracked an unbeaten double-century in the National Cricket League recently•Walton

Team newsGiven the tinge of green on the pitch, Virat Kohli has said India are likely to play three fast bowlers. This means they will most likely retain the five-bowler combination they played in their last two Tests against South Africa.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 9 R Ashwin, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Mohammed ShamiAt the top of the order, Bangladesh have a choice to make between the uncapped Saif Hassan and the experienced Imrul Kayes. Another decision involves the seam attack, and who partners the steady Abu Jayed – Mustafizur Rahman or Ebadot Hossain. Middle-order batsman Mosaddek Hossain is unavailable; he has left for Dhaka to attend to a family emergency.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Shadman Islam, 2 Saif Hassan/Imrul Kayes, 3 Mominul Haque (capt), 4 Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Mohammad Mithun, 7 Liton Das (wk), 8 Mehidy Hasan, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Abu Jayed, 11 Ebadot Hossain/Mustafizur RahmanPitch and conditionsThe pitch in Indore is usually a good one to bat on, with a bit of bounce to encourage stroke-making. There was a fair amount of grass on the surface on the eve of the match, so some early help for the fast bowlers can be expected. The weather should be warm but pleasant, with clear skies and afternoon temperatures in the high 20s (Celsius).Stats and trivia The Holkar Stadium has only hosted one Test match so far, during New Zealand’s tour of India in 2016. India won by 321 runs to seal a 3-0 whitewash, with big hundreds from Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane setting up a big first-innings total and R Ashwin picking up career-best match figures of 13 for 140 to bag the Player of the Match award. Bangladesh could hand a debut to Saif, the 21-year-old opening batsman. Saif has an excellent first-class record, with 2245 runs from 37 matches at an average of 45.81. Last month, he made 220* – his highest score – for Dhaka Division against Rangpur Division in the National Cricket League. Rahane needs 25 runs to reach the 4000 mark in Test cricket. Wriddhiman Saha has 97 dismissals (86 catches, 11 stumpings) in Test cricket. MS Dhoni (294), Syed Kirmani (198), Kiran More (130) and Nayan Mongia (107) are the only four India keepers with 100 or more dismissals.Quotes”They are used to playing in similar conditions so we definitely think that they will know their game plan and what they need to do. We’ll have to play well to get a result, like we have in the past. We’ll not take anyone lightly from Bangladesh. When they play well they can be a very skillful team and they have the ability to play some really good cricket. We’ll have respect for them but more than that we’ll have belief in our own team.”
“We are not under any pressure. We all know there isn’t much expectation from this series. We are not taking pressure. We will try to play good cricket.”

É Campeão! Avaí empata com a Chapecoense e fatura o Catarinense

MatériaMais Notícias

O Avaí é campeão do Campeonato Catarinense.

Duelo morno e golpe do Avaí

O gol do Leão abalou a Chapecoense. Sem forças para reagir, o Verdão do Oeste não conseguiu criar nada. Quando teve Perotti inspirado, o atacante empurrou para a rede no último lance do jogo e ao menos garantiu o empate.
