Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in signing a player who used to be on the books of a Premier League giant, according to a new update.

The Owls continue to fight for their lives in the Championship as they look to pull off something of a miracle escape act under Danny Rohl, but there is still plenty of work to be done to survive an immediate return to League One.

Rohl's side remain in the bottom three after defeat to Coventry City this weekend, but they have picked themselves up after a horror start under the previous management.

Wednesday have been linked with new signings in the January transfer window, and it could make sense to bring in a few new faces in order to strengthen the depth at the manager's disposal.

Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden is among the Owls' potential transfer targets, having been earmarked as an experienced head who could add quality to the midfield.

Now, another update has emerged regarding the Owls' January transfer business, with a defensive ace being looked at as a target.

Sheff Wed want Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill

According to Football Insider, Sheffield Wednesday are keen on signing Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill, with the left-back once at Arsenal and now playing abroad in Hungary.

"Sheffield Wednesday have enquired about signing ex-Arsenal defender Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill, sources have told Football Insider. Ormonde-Ottewill, [28], is currently plying his trade in Hungary with Puskas Akademia FC and is in the final six months of his contract with the club.

"Sheffield Wednesday are considering offering the left-back a return to the UK, while several Major League Soccer sides are keen to lure the former England youth international to the US."

Ormonde-Ottewill may be something of a relative unknown to Wednesday fans, but he is someone who could provide Rohl with the aforementioned depth that he needs between now and the end of the season given his experience.

The fact that the 28-year-old was even at Arsenal at any point in his career speaks volumes about the quality that he possesses, and he made a total of 32 appearances for the Gunners' Under-21s during his time at the club. He is also a one-time capped England Under-19 international, while 49 appearances in League One shows that he has an element of experience in the Football League.

Ormonde-Ottewill could provide good competition for Marvin Johnson on the left flank, assuming the latter stays put at Wednesday beyond the January window – he is reportedly in talks with fellow Championship side Ipswich Town over a move to the promotion hopefuls – and at 28 years of age, he is both experienced and hopefully having entered his prime years.

If the signing goes through, it may not necessarily be an earth-shattering piece of business, but should Rohl see Ormonde-Ottewill as someone who can suit his style of play and system, the Owls manager should be trusted.

With over half of the Premier League season played, Arsenal find themselves in the midst of another title race, and while they aren't leading like they were last year, they are still within touching distance of Liverpool and Manchester City.

The summer signing of Declan Rice has helped to make the team more robust in defence, but with the side looking less fluid in attack, Mikel Arteta's decision to spend £65m on Kai Havertz is coming more and more under the microscope.

In fact, the latest player touted for a move to the Emirates is a midfielder who could very well take the German's position in the team, so maybe it isn't just the fans who are growing impatient with the former Chelsea man's performances.

Arsenal look to Italy for midfield reinforcements

According to GOAL Brasil, Arsenal are among several clubs interested in Atalanta's star midfielder Ederson and have 'made inquiries' about his availability in the transfer market.

The report has revealed that Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain have also inquired about the 24-year-old this month. Still, no club has made a formal offer to the Bergamo outfit as things stand.

There has not been a reliable report as to how much the Serie A side want for their dynamic midfielder, but CIES Football Observatory values him at around €30m (£26m), which, if accurate, might represent a bargain in this market, and a brilliant opportunity for Arsenal to sign the perfect Havertz replacement.

How Ederson compares to Havertz

Now, had Havertz arrived for a substantially smaller fee, or perhaps from a club that wasn't Chelsea, he might be getting less flack for his performances this season, as his return of four goals and one assist in 21 Premier League appearances isn't utterly woeful, it is just very, very underwhelming.

What makes it worse is that he doesn't look much better than when he first arrived at the club, essentially torpedoing any hope some might have had that he'd grow into his role in N5.

With that in mind and football being as cutthroat as it is, it does make sense to start looking for a replacement, especially if the Gunners have any genuine ambition to win the league, and Atalanta's Ederson looks to be that ideal replacement.

While his return of five goals and one assist in 21 Serie A appearances is only slightly better than the German's output in England, what is going on under the hood makes all the difference.

When comparing the pair's underlying numbers, it becomes practically impossible to argue for Havertz over the Brazilian, as in the vast majority of relevant metrics, he is beaten, and in several instances, it isn't even close.

For example, the "versatile" midfielder, as South American football expert Tim Vickery described him, scores more non-penalty goals than the German from a lower non-penalty expected goal and assist figure; he also produces significantly more progressive passes, shots on target and shot-creating actions per 90 than his potential future teammate.

After Joe Root’s assessment that England’s batsmen hadn’t adapted to the surfaces they had encountered during the tournament, Bairstow admitted they had been caught off guard by the state of World Cup pitches, which haven’t yielded the big totals many were expecting based on recent seasons.”None of the pitches throughout the whole tournament have been as true as they have been previously – whether that Pakistan series or last summer,” Bairstow said. “Whether that’s dictated by the weather, the ICC or whatever you want to put that down too – I have no idea. But the scores have not been as high as they have been over the last two years in England. Look at the ODI results over the last two years.”The pitches that we’ve been playing on the last two years are surely the pitches we would be playing on in a World Cup. So I don’t know why they’ve changed. That wasn’t a typical Oval wicket we played South Africa on in the opening game. It wasn’t a typical Trent Bridge wicket we played Pakistan on. It wasn’t a typical Lord’s wicket that we played the other day.”Yes the overheads were different. But they’re not the typical wickets we’ve been playing on over two-and-a-bit years. وتابع: “حدث التجديد قبل إغلاق القيد الإفريقي بيوم، عقدي ممتد مع الزمالك لمدة 3 سنوات لموسم 2027”.

ما المشكلة بينك وبين حسام عبد المجيد؟ أجاب: “خرجت بعد المباراة وقدمت اعتذارًا لكل اللاعبين في غرفة الملابس، وأنا امتثلت لكل الإجراءات القانونية لنادي الزمالك بشأن هذه الواقعة”.

وأكد: “مدرب حراس المرمى أعطاني زجاجة مدون عليها كل زواية يسدد فيها لاعبو الأهلي بركلات الجزاء ولكن رفضت الحصول علىها لأني أحب أن العب بشعوري”.

وأكمل: “منذ تم انتخاب مجلس الإدارة حدثت مشاكل كثيرة جدًا، وشاهدنا الأمور في النادي صعبة جدًا وكل يوم تحدث أزمة، وأنا كنت لا أريد الرحيل عن النادي وحابب تواجدي وصنعت تاريخًا”.

واستكمل: “أحمد حسام ميدو هو من أعطاني فرصة حقيقية بنادي الإسماعيلي وكانت توجد منافسة قوية مع محمد صبحي وأصر أن أشارك رغم أنني لم أستكمل 20 سنة، وهذه كانت انطلاقتي وهو كان صاحب الفضل علي هو وسعفان الصغير”.

وواصل: “صنعت تاريخ مع نادي الزمالك خلال 5 سنوات حصدت 7 بطولات، وهذا رقم كبير في ظل المشاكل الكثيرة التي كانت متواجدة في النادي”.

وتابع: “يوجد مسؤولون تحدثوا معي من نادي بيراميدز ووصلت لهم أن رغبتي الأولي هي الاستمرار مع نادي الزمالك وأبلغتهم أنني سأرى الزمالك، كنت متمسكًا بالزمالك لآخر وقت وكنت على تواصل مع حسين لبيب وأصر على استمراري في النادي وفعل الكثير من أجل فعل ذلك”.

وبسؤاله، قيل إن الزمالك خفض عقدك للنصف، فأجاب: “(هو اتخفض)”.

وأفاد: “كل الأرقام التي قيلت عن عقدي مع الزمالك غير صحيحة، ضحيت بأشياء كثيرة جدًا من أجل التواجد في نادي الزمالك”.

وأردف: “أجلس مع نجلي وأتحدث معه وله رأي في القرارات المصيرية، وسألته تريدني أن أستمر في النادي أم لا، وكان رده تلقائي لابد أن تستمر في النادي”.

واستطرد: “عبد الله السعيد عقلية محترفة جدًا لديه شغف للاعب يحاول يثبت نفسه، وهذا غير متواجد في معظم اللاعبين الموجودين في مصر، ويريد كل مباراة أن يطور من نفسه، هو أسطورة مثل شيكابالا، كل هذا يميزه عن لاعبي مصر”.

وأشار: “محمد الشناوي شخصية جميلة جدًا وأحبه ودائمًا نجلس مع بعض في منتخب مصر، مصطفى شوبير لديه طموح ويعمل على نفسه بشكل جيد وحارس مرمى له مستقبل، أتواصل مع حمزة علاء دائمًا من قبل ما يشارك في الأولمبياد مدربه سيد السويركي كان مدربي في الإسماعيلي”.

Ange Postecoglou was backed last summer in the transfer window as Tottenham Hotspur completed a number of signings to bolster their squad.

At this moment in time, they appear to have hit the mark with a host of those additions, including the likes of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Guglielmo Vicario, who have all been influential figures for the Australian head coach.

However, Spurs have not always got it right when they have dipped into the market to splash the cash on new signings. Davinson Sanchez, whose value plummeted by £29m during his time at the club, is one example of their failures over the years.

Another piece of business Tottenham had a howler with was the signing of central midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, who is still contracted to the club, from Lyon in the summer of 2019.

How much Spurs paid for Ndombele

Spurs reportedly paid a staggering club-record fee of £63m to sign the French whiz from the Ligue 1 side in an attempt to improve Mauricio Pochettino's team.

However, he failed to initially establish himself as a regular starter for the Argentine head coach with 12 starts in 21 appearances in the Premier League during the 2019/20 campaign.

That changed the following season, though, as Ndombele started 28 of his 33 league outings for Tottenham and chipped in with three goals and two assists from a midfield position.

Supporters can be forgiven for thinking that his emergence that year would be a platform for him to kick on and progress as a Spurs player but that is not what happened.

The French flop, who ex-Tottenham defender Alan Hutton described as "expensive", only started six league games during the first half of the 2021/22 campaign before being sent back on loan to Lyon for the last six months of the season.

How much has Ndombele cost Spurs in total

The initial fee of £63m was already a huge amount of money for Spurs to pay but they have also had to pay his astonishing wages, which contributes to how much the signing has drained from the club.

He is reportedly on £200k-per-week, which works out at around £10.4m-per-season, and, therefore, cost the Lilywhites £20.8m in wages across his first two seasons in England, along with £5.2m for the first half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Lyon then brought him back on loan and paid a fee of £1.2m for that temporary deal, although it is unclear exactly how much they contributed to his wages as it was reported that the player had to pay the difference between what the two clubs were willing to do.

The France international was then sent out on loan to Serie A side Napoli for the 2022/23 season, and only €3.5m (£3m) of his £10.4m salary were covered by the Italian team.

This meant that Spurs still had to splash £7.4m in wages for the central midfielder that term, which took the overall total to £95.2m including his wages and transfer fee, with £1.2m taken away for the fee Lyon paid to sign him on loan, by the end of last season.

Ndombele was sent out on loan once again last summer as Turkish giants Galatasaray swooped for him and agreed to pay €3.1m (£2.6m) of his wages.

This means that Tottenham will only pay £7.8m of his salary by the end of the 2023/24 season, and he is still contracted through to the end of next term.

Therefore, Ndombele will have cost the club at least £103m, given it remains unclear how much his loan spell with Lyon came to, by the summer with the transfer fee and wages combined.

There is no guarantee that they will be able to offload him permanently to get rid of the £10.4m due in the final year of his contract, so that figure could continue to rise.

Pochettino and Daniel Levy made a huge blunder with the signing of the French midfielder back in 2019 as it was a costly mistake, as evidenced by the financial outlay for just one season of regular starts in almost five years.

Rishabh Pant played four matches for India in the 2019 World Cup, batting at No. 4 in each game. Scores of 32, 48, 4 and 32 seemed to suggest Pant had the potential to be the long-term solution for India, batting at that troublesome number. The No. 4 spot hasn’t yet been nailed down despite several players being tried out, but for his part, Pant said he felt comfortable there and had been practising for it.”I loved batting at No. 4. It was nothing new for me as I have played at No. 4 before, like in the IPL. I had been practicing for the same role,” Pant told . “There is no specific way or style I play in. I always play according to situation. I don’t know what people say, because I don’t read newspapers much.”Pant had played only five ODIs before the World Cup, though he wasn’t short on international experience, having played nine Tests and 15 T20Is. The wicketkeeper-batsman acknowledged that cutting his teeth in Test cricket made things easier.”I don’t think about (the differences in) formats too much. Yes, maybe it did help that I played Test cricket first,” Pant said. “I got good experience from playing Test cricket. People used to say that Test cricket is the most difficult. So I got to learn a lot, how to build the innings, playing down the order and how to bat with the tail.”There is learning every day in Test cricket. Especially when you have to walk out to bat after having fielded the entire day. That is a different experience. In ODIs and T20Is especially, things happen very fast.”Pant will now be the first-choice wicketkeeper for the Indian team on their tour of the West Indies across formats, with MS Dhoni not available.”I know those are big shoes to fill, but if I start thinking about it there will be a problem,” he said of replacing Dhoni in the limited-overs formats. “Right now, I am not thinking about what people say. I am just focusing on what I have to do.”My coach has always told me one thing: every year you have to add something to your game. You can’t stagnate because now the technology is so good that you have to keep improving and add on things each and every day of your career. That’s what I try to do. I just keep on trying new things. If it helps me, I try it in a match. There are days when I try these new shots in the nets, some days I don’t. It is all part of a long-term process.”
