Farke axes Piroe & unleashes a surprise in Leeds predicted lineup v Birmingham

Daniel Farke will want an immediate reaction to Leeds United's recent slump against Birmingham City on Monday, starting 2024 off with a bang after two defeats on the spin to close out 2023.

Only managing one shot on target in the 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion last match, the Whites will need to step their game up against Wayne Rooney's Blues to pick up a much-needed victory back at Elland Road.

Farke freshened up his side for the game away at the Baggies and could do the exact same against Birmingham on New Year's Day, with two potential changes on the cards in this predicted XI…

1 GK – Karl Darlow

karl-darlow-newcastle-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-illan-meslier-farke

Karl Darlow will remain in-between the sticks for the game versus the Blues tomorrow, Farke having to rely on the ex-Newcastle United man in goal again with Illan Meslier still serving a suspension.

Making just one save in the West Brom loss – as per Sofascore – the Leeds number 28 will hope he can play a key role in the Whites pulling off a win against Birmingham.

2 RB – Djed Spence

Leeds United's loan defender Djed Spence.

Djed Spence will also be retained by his German manager for the game versus Birmingham, the former Nottingham Forest figure energetic and lively during an hour spell versus the Baggies last match.

Spence would notch up a goalline clearance in the defeat, ensuring Leeds weren't on the receiving end of a humiliating loss come full-time.

3 CB – Joe Rodon

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon will also start versus Rooney's side, the Tottenham Hotspur loanee excelling again versus West Brom despite the final outcome.

Amassing 106 touches of the ball at the Hawthorns, Rodon's unerring calmness on the ball was also matched by an ability to roll up his sleeves and show his expertise physically when needed – winning six duels in total, the Leeds number 14 proving to be a fantastic acquisition in the summer.

4 CB – Liam Cooper

Leeds defender Liam Cooper.

Liam Cooper came back into the Leeds side last match owing to Pascal Struijk being ruled out due to injury, the Scottish centre-back reclaiming his captain duties in the process.

The experienced figure of Cooper proved to be a worthwhile addition to the lineup, the imposing number six blocking three West Brom shots in the 1-0 defeat.

5 LB – Sam Byram

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

Sam Byram also returned to the lineup at the Hawthorns alongside Cooper, a forgotten figure to some at Elland Road coming back in to replace Archie Gray.

Byram should be retained for the game versus Birmingham after a satisfactory outing at West Brom, making five clearances in total filling in at left-back.

6 CM – Ethan Ampadu

Ethan Ampadu's spot in the starting eleven shouldn't be under any threat for the game tomorrow against Birmingham, the ex-Chelsea man solid in the away game at West Brom if a little unspectacular.

He wasn't quite at his no-nonsense best – only winning one duel in the game – but Farke is unlikely to drop the holding midfielder who has started every single Championship game this season for the promotion-chasing Whites.

7 CM – Ilia Gruev

Former Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev.

Ampadu's midfield partner in Ilia Gruev will hope he can become a reliable first-teamer under Farke in the weeks to come, Gruev starting ahead of Glen Kamara away at West Brom and stepping up to the mark.

The summer signing from Werder Bremen wasn't shy or passive starting just his second game of the campaign, winning all but one of his duels in the narrow loss.

Moreover, the Bulgarian defensive midfielder was useful in helping his team play out from the back – accurate with three of his four long balls at the Hawthorns.

8 RM – Daniel James

Dan James

The first potential change for the game against the Blues could see Daniel James return to the first team fold ahead of Wilfried Gnonto, the Italian forward blowing hot and cold in the West Midlands.

The diminutive right winger couldn't muster up a single shot on target versus Carlos Corberan's hosts, equally as stunted venturing forward with just one successful dribble managed across a second-rate hour on the Hawthorns turf.

James, in contrast, was lively when introduced into the game for a 30-minute run-out – the £50k per week winger registering three successful crosses despite only being on the pitch briefly.

Farke will want his speedster to be hard to contain against Birmingham to help his team pull off a win, drifting into pockets of space to be a thorn in the Blues side.

Once referred to as "electric" by ex-Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen after a dazzling display in the Championship for Swansea City, James will want to continue his impressive individual campaign against Birmingham if selected.

9 CAM – Georginio Rutter

Leeds forward Georgino Rutter.

Farke could well opt to play Rutter in an attacking midfield spot against a susceptible Birmingham side, allowing Rutter's creativity to come to the forefront – instead of his weak goalscoring ability – by supplying the other forward players with chances to hit the back of the net.

The former Hoffenheim man has nine assists next to his name already this season, meaning he should be perfectly suited to this more creative role in the side over a lacklustre Joel Piroe.

Piroe has been out-of-sorts in the last two away games for Leeds, Farke potentially giving his Dutch attacker a breather for the game on Monday.

10 LM – Crysencio Summerville

There's no chance that Farke will axe Crysencio Summerville however, Leeds' showboating winger is crucial to how the Whites operate going forward.

Even on a collective off-day as seen in the narrow Baggies defeat, Summerville was still lively and alert in attempting to make things happen – creating once big chance at the Hawthorns, alongside successfully completing four dribble attempts up against the sternest defence in the division.

England women 204 for 2 (Jones 57, Wyatt 51) beat Sri Lanka 108 for 6 (Karunaratne 44) by 96 runsEngland’s women completed their second 3-0 clean sweep on their tour of Sri Lanka, wrapping up the T20I series with their most dominant display yet in a 96-run win in Colombo.Batting first after Sri Lanka won the toss, England’s batsmen made hay throughout their 20 overs, with Danni Wyatt and Amy Jones each making half-centuries at the top of the order before Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver cut loose in the closing overs.Wyatt was the first of only two wickets to fall, prised out for 51 from 33 balls after a 96-run opening stand that spanned the first ten overs, before Jones departed 20 runs later for 57 from 38, once again to the toiling Oshadi Ranasinghe, who was one of only two bowlers to concede her runs at less than 11 an over. With the platform set, Sciver and Beaumont climbed onto the offensive, crashing an unbroken stand of 88 in just seven overs. Sciver smashed 10 fours in her 49 not out from 24 balls, while Beaumont scampered between the wickets to keep pace with 42 from 25.In reply, Hansima Karunaratne saved face for Sri Lanka with a hard-fought 44 from 53 balls, but her team-mates struggled to show much resistance.Linsey Smith struck with her first ball to remove Umesha Thimashini, lbw for 1, before Freya Davies had the captain Chamari Atapattu caught behind for 10 with the first ball of her second over.Kate Cross, playing her first match of the T20 leg, chipped in with two wickets, either side of two further breakthroughs from Heather Knight and Laura Marsh. From 82 for 6, Karunaratne at least ensured that Sri Lanka batted out their 20 overs, but the game was long since gone.

Minha mãe chorou no primeiro dia, mas ela e meu pai me deram total apoio. Também sempre iam me visitar.

Além do Athletico, tinha outro clube interessado. O que pesou na nossa escolha foi a estrutura do Clube e o aproveitamento das Categorias de Formação no profissional. Na verdade, eu e minha família ficamos muito felizes em saber do interesse de um clube como o Athletico – finalizou.

Report: Chelsea hold talks to sign "elite" Diomande ahead of Liverpool

Unlike Everton and Nottingham Forest, Chelsea avoided Premier League charges for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) this week, but trouble is reportedly brewing ahead of the 2025 review. The Blues have spent in excess of £1bn since Todd Boehly's takeover in 2022, and they may have to make sacrifices to ensure they are compliant with the league's requirements.

Chelsea: Every signing Todd Boehly has made at Stamford Bridge

The full list is absolutely crazy!

ByAlex Caple May 5, 2025

One of those may be offloading Trevoh Chalobah, an academy graduate whose sale can be classed as pure profit in the books. Chalobah could leave the club this month amid the possibility that Bayern Munich reignite their summer interest.

Elsewhere, Thiago Silva is approaching the expiry of his contract this summer and there have yet to be any talks over an extension. The Brazilian turns 40 this year and his time at Stamford Bridge may be coming to an end.

If Chalobah and Silva do move on, then Chelsea will have to find a replacement at centre-back while operating within the bounds of the PSR. The club have been watching their former player Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace, and Jean-Clair Todibo at Nice, but now another target has emerged.

Diomande subject of Chelsea talks

According to Football.london, Chelsea have held talks with Sporting CP over Ousmane Diomande. The 20-year-old has played his way onto the Blues' shortlist, prompting them to make contact over a deal.

The Ivorian, who's currently representing the host country at the Africa Cup of Nations, has a release clause of £69m in his contract, and Sporting will apparently force any suitors to pay that amount in full if they want to sign him this month. In the summer, however, it's thought that there may be more room for negotiation given that the Primeira Liga club will have ample time to plug the gap.

Chelsea should wait until summer for "elite" Diomande

It's been a whirlwind period for Diomande, who only moved to European football with Danish club Midtjylland in the summer of 2022. Six months, and an impressive loan spell at Portuguese second-tier side Mafra, later, he was snapped up by Sporting. Now, he's being linked to two sides in the Premier League's big six, with Liverpool also said to be interested.

Even though he hadn't played a game of European top-flight football when he arrived, Sporting showed trust in Diomande instantly. He made 11 league starts in the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, and played the second legs of the Europa League knockout ties against Arsenal and Juventus. This season, he'd started every league match for the club before heading off to AFCON.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

38 games isn't much of a sample size for Chelsea and Liverpool when it comes to judging a player, but his numbers illustrate why they're so intrigued. He's posted a tackle success rate of 83.3% this season, the second-best in the league, which shows that he almost always wins possession when he puts his foot in. No wonder U23 talent scout Antonio Mango has labelled him "elite".

On the ball, meanwhile, he's supremely precise, ranking third in the league for pass completion (91%), and despite missing the last three games, he remains in the top six for touches (1,165), progressive carrying distance (2,342 yards) and passes into the final third (94). This highlights just how ambitious he is in possession, which is sure to appeal to Mauricio Pochettino, too.

If Chelsea do lose Chalobah, Diomande could be the ideal replacement, although it would be wise to wait until the summer given that they are currently walking a financial tightrope.

Warner and Bairstow punish sloppy Knight Riders

The Sunrisers Hyderabad batting pair put on 131 in just 12.2 overs, which reduced the 160-run chase to a cakewalk in the end

The Report by Mohammad Isam21-Apr-20194:41

Plan was to save my overs for Russell – Rashid

David Warner and Jonny Bairstow crushed Kolkata Knight Riders, who slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat. The Sunrisers Hyderabad batting pair put on 131 in just 12.2 overs, which reduced the 160-run chase to a cakewalk in the end.Bairstow finished unbeaten on 80 off 43 balls with four sixes and seven fours while Warner, who was the only batsman to be dismissed in the second innings, made 67 off 38 balls with three fours and five sixes. When they bowled, it was Rashid Khan who held back the Knight Riders middle order after Khaleel Ahmed had given them a strong start with a three-wicket haulESPNcricinfo Ltd

Khaleel thwarts a fast KKR startChris Lynn and Sunil Narine struck five fours and three sixes in the first 2.3 overs, and just as they reached a crescendo, Khaleel’s slower ball stung Narine’s leg-stump. The left-arm quick had been struck for a six and two fours off two previous deliveries, so his celebration was understandably one of rage.Khaleel made it a double breakthrough when he removed Shubman Gill, who guided the ball to point where Vijay Shankar took a simple catch. The Knight Riders were already losing much of their early impetus when Bhuvneshwar had Nitish Rana caught behind and Dinesh Karthik self-destructed with a run out in the ninth over.Lynn held back, or holds back? The usually big hitting Chris Lynn ended up making his slowest IPL fifty – 51 off 47 balls – having been at the crease for an hour and a half. He would have gone after almost every ball but the Knight Riders also needed him to bat through after they lost four wickets in less than six overs, for only 31 runs.Lynn, who added 51 runs for the fifth wicket with Rinku Singh, got out with three overs left in the innings and even Andre Russell couldn’t salvage a decent enough score this time.Knight Riders finished with 159 for 8 in 20 overs, due in large part to Russell coming in late and Lynn holding himself back.Another Warner-Bairstow specialIn four out of nine innings so far, Warner and Bairstow have put together a 100-plus stand, now just behind Dhawan and Warner for most century partnerships for the first wicket in the IPL.Warner began the onslaught with a straight six off newcomer Prithvi Raj. But only a few balls later, KC Cariappa put down a sitter at deep point off Bairstow’s slash. Sixteen came off that over, before Cariappa’ nightmare outing continued, leaking 20 runs off his first over, which included two sixes. They brought up the 100-run stand in the ninth over, before Warner pasted Narine for his fifth six. Bairstow, who was the more conservative of the two openers, got two more lives, on 55 and 58, before Raj bowled Warner in the 13th over. Bairstow, then, cut loose in the 15th over when his third and fourth sixes completed the chase.

England's team culture is as strong as it's ever been – Eoin Morgan

Captain describes final selection meeting as “toughest decision” but stands by the 15-man squad that will launch campaign on May 30

Andrew Miller21-May-2019

Eoin Morgan at the launch of England’s World Cup kit•Getty Images

Eoin Morgan says that the process of whittling England’s World Cup squad down to the final 15-man party was “the toughest decision I’ve ever been a part of”, but believes that he personally, and his team as a whole, have never been better equipped to make the big calls, having grown together in the four years since the 2015 campaign.Speaking at the launch of England’s World Cup kit in East London, Morgan admitted that his team’s final approach to the tournament had not been entirely smooth – with Alex Hales’ expulsion from the squad for a second failed drugs test providing a particularly unwelcome distraction in recent weeks. However, with England making a seamless readjustment in Hales’ absence to beat Pakistan 4-0 in another record-breaking run of batting form, Morgan feels that the team has come through a significant stress test of its culture. Looking ahead, he backed his players to find further ways to keep winning in the event of any more disruption during the course of the tournament.”I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth, I’d say we’ve been better equipped at dealing with anything that’s cropped up, certainly as a group,” said Morgan. “For me as a captain, being more experienced, and having been through four years of being captain, our prep and planning has been excellent and the guys have responded to that by performing on a consistent basis, probably more so for last two years than first two.”Asked if the Hales situation was the sort of crisis that would have derailed past England World Cup campaigns, Morgan admitted: “Yeah, it probably would have. It’s something I’ve never come up against before.”However, he also explained that the team management had put in place contingency plans for similar incidents, meaning that they had not been caught entirely on the hop when the news of Hales’ indiscretions were made public.”We hadn’t planned exactly for that, we’d planned for instances when the [team] culture had been tested or individually we’d been tested,” Morgan said. “There’s still loads of things that we’ve planned for that might continue to crop up throughout the World Cup.”Our values as a team include the words ‘courage’, ‘respect’, and ‘unity’, symbolising the three lions on our cap, and taking that cap forward across all three formats and all squads.”ALSO READ: Dobell: Focus on fringe players shows how far England have come”Over a period of time, everyone can relate to it on and off the field. For some people it may only be words, but for us as international cricketers, travelling around all the time, the one thing that’s constant right from the beginning of your journey is your cap. It’s a gentle reminder of how much responsibility you have, and the privileged position you are constantly in to make the most of that.”That shared journey made this week’s decision to cut Joe Denly and, especially, David Willey from England’s final 15 particularly tough, but having been given the casting vote in the selectors’ deliberations, Morgan was able to defend the “logic of the decision and the balance of the squad” that resulted in Jofra Archer and Liam Dawson being called up in their places.”It was the toughest decision I’ve ever been a part of, certainly with this group,” said Morgan. “To leave two guys out, one who has been around for the last four years and been a big part of everything we’ve done on and off the field, and the other is an exceptionally talented cricketer. It’s unfortunate for those who missed out but it was the right call.”Morgan added that he wasn’t able to feel any great sense of relief at having made the cut, given that the contributions of both players had required “the time and dedication” to do them justice. However, he was able to reiterate to both the point he made at the presentation ceremony in Headingley last week, that the nature of a six-week tournament would almost certainly throw up the possibility of a replacement being called upon.”We had a conversation last night,” Morgan said, “explaining the fact that there are nine group-stage games and the fact that we have four fast bowlers, and one of them is likely to get injured. It happens.”And I had the same conversation with Joe. We haven’t had many injuries in the batting department for a long time, so we need to plan for everything, given that they might come into play straightaway, so they need to be prepared for that.”Asked if England were playing “fearless” cricket in the wake of their 4-0 series win over Pakistan, Morgan actually felt that his team had reined in some of the more overt aggression that had led to a few rare but notable mishaps in recent years.”I wouldn’t say that we feel fearless, probably two years ago we felt more fearless, because we were quite young in our growth as a team,” he said. “We’ve had two more years’ experience on top of that, and we are better at coping and adapting to scenarios and recognising different situations throughout a game. I wouldn’t say that’s fearless.”The team’s single biggest disappointment of the past four years, the Champions Trophy semi-final defeat against Pakistan in 2017, was an example of where England had been derailed in the recent past.”One of the biggest learning things that came out of that was that it probably came a little bit early for us,” he said. “We probably didn’t realise how good we were and how poor we were on slow wickets. Since then, we’ve improved our play at both home and away, and on wickets that don’t necessarily suit our planning.”Overall, however, Morgan said that he was simply itching to get started. “We are pretty close to our starting XI, barring a couple of pitch minor adjustments,” he said. “If the game was tomorrow, it would be better for us than seven or eight days’ time. Our preparation against Pakistan was as good as anything we could have hoped for. To perform like we did is extremely encouraging.”
