Buoyant Sri Lanka aim to make short work of England once more

England could bring back Joe Denly after eight years in the wilderness, while Sri Lanka have called up Sadeera Samarawickrama

Big PictureFollowing an ODI series in which all five matches were affected by the rain, Sri Lanka and England will now attempt to squeeze in a one-off T20 that could be more splash than thrash. By the time the rain came hammering down in Colombo on Tuesday, England had suffered a painful-looking belly-flop to end their winning run; Sri Lanka will be hoping it is them handing out the towellings from here on in, with three Tests to follow next month.Given that the third ODI in Pallekele was a 21-over affair, things might not be greatly different now the teams are officially playing T20. England have taken to opening with Jos Buttler (where he averages 62.75, at a strike rate of 158.86, from five innings) and have added yorker specialist Chris Jordan to their party; there might not be room for Joe Root, and Joe Denly could complete a remarkably long-and-winding return to England colours, but otherwise the line-up will be pretty familiar.Sri Lanka will be led by Thisara Perera in this format, while Lasith Malinga could win his first T20I cap in over a year following a successful return in the ODIs. Perhaps the most interesting name in their squad is that of batting allrounder (and ambidextrous bowler) Kamindu Mendis. A former U-19s captain, and one among a crop of young players trying to perfect the skill of bowling with both arms, Mendis played against England in one of their warm-up games and could make his full international debut. With the next men’s World T20 still more than two years away, there may not be many significant lessons to learn – but both teams, and an expected full house at the R Premadasa Stadium, will be hoping the weather doesn’t spoil their fun.Form guideSri Lanka WLLLW (completed matches, most recent first)
England LWLWWIn the spotlightAfter his barnstorming return to form in the fifth ODI, Kusal Mendis will be champing at the bit for another crack. A 30-ball fifty, which featured several imperious blows beyond the ropes, was pretty decent practice for shifting up into T20 gear – a format in which he has already made four half-centuries this year. Sri Lanka will be hoping that their foremost young batting talent can go into next month’s Test series with confidence fully replenished.Alex Hales was unable to capitalise on the opportunity afforded by Jonny Bairstow’s injury during the ODI series, making scores of 12 and 0, while his fielding has also come in for scrutiny – in the second Pallekele game, he managed to drop Dasun Shanaka for six. He has competition in the T20 side, too, after Buttler’s successful outings at opener. Having given up first-class cricket to focus on smacking the white ball, these are the moments he needs to seize.Team newsKusal Perera has not recovered from the quad strain he sustained during the second ODI, so Sadeera Samarawickrama has been added to the squad and will likely come into the XI. Kamindu has won his first senior call-up for Sri Lanka at 20, and he could compete with Dhananjaya de Silva for a spot. There has been some late news that Akila Dananjaya is also injured, which means Amila Aponso has been added to the squad, and could take his spot in the XI.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 2 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Thisara Perera (capt.), 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Amila Aponso, 11 Dushmantha ChameeraEngland have flown in Jordan but will otherwise pick from the same squad as for the ODIs. Several players missed training on Friday, however, including Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Olly Stone. Denly looks set to come in for his first England cap in over eight years, though he is unlikely to be given the top-order berth he occupies for Kent.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Alex Hales, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Joe Denly, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Liam Plunkett, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Tom CurranPitch and conditionsThe Premadasa was flat and full of runs for Tuesday’s ODI (during the Sri Lanka innings, at least) and they will be using a fresh surface – although that doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of spin. However, the weather once again looms as a major obstacle, with showers and thunderstorms likely to arrive over Colombo during the late afternoon/evening.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka have lost three of their last four T20 outings in Colombo, including a penultimate ball defeat to Bangladesh in the Nidahas Trophy that led to a dressing room door being smashed. England have played two T20s at Khettarama, beating Afghanistan and losing to India during the 2012 World T20. Denly’s last international appearance came against Pakistan in Dubai in 2010. England promptly switched to the uncapped Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter as their opening combination and went on to win the World T20. Denly does however hold the distinction of being one of only 15 men to take a wicket with their first ball in international T20.Quotes”Kamindu played alongside with me for Colombo District in domestic cricket. We know what he is capable of. He’s a remarkable player – he can bowl with either hands and when a right-hand/left-hand combination is out in the middle, having him in the team is a big bonus for us. He is a good fielder and a good batsman as well.”
“The last ODI was a wake-up. I don’t recall the last time we were hit for 360 as a bowling unit or played so poorly with the bat. It was a big learning curve. It gave us a big kick up the arse. Hopefully we can right those wrongs on Saturday.”

Farke has unearthed his own Ousmane Dembele in "unplayable" Leeds ace

Leeds United were left frustrated as they missed out on an opportunity to move to within five points of Ipswich Town in second place after their draw with Rotherham.

A win against the Millers last weekend would have cut the gap by three points as the Tractor Boys were beaten 2-0 by West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, which meant that the Whites only gained one point on the automatic promotion places.

Daniel Farke's side are hunting down the top two as they attempt to make an instant return to the Premier League after being relegated at the end of last season.

Leeds forward Georgino Rutter.

One of the driving forces behind their promotion push so far has been the outstanding form of French attacker Georgino Rutter, who registered his sixth assist of the campaign against Rotherham.

Whites left-back Junior Firpo recently hailed him as being "unplayable" and compared him to Paris Saint-Germain and France star Ousmane Dembele, due to them both being effective with both feet.

Ousmane Dembele's season in numbers

The exciting winger arrived at PSG from Barcelona over the summer and he has caught the eye with his superbly creative performances in Ligue 1.

He has racked up four assists and created five 'big chances', to go along with one goal, in nine top-flight starts for the French champions this term.

The left-footed whiz, who is equally adept at using his 'weaker' right, has made 2.8 key passes and completed three dribbles per match for PSG.

Dembele, who recorded seven assists and created nine 'big chances' in 16 LaLiga starts for Barcelona last season, has proven himself to be a consistent creative threat who can use both feet to split open the opposition's defence at will.

Farke has unearthed his own version of the France international by developing a system that has allowed Rutter to thrive in Yorkshire as an outstanding creator.

Georgino Rutter's season in numbers

The January signing from Hoffenheim has been deployed as a dynamic centre-forward by the German head coach, in a role that allows him to drop deep to pick the ball up and make things happen in the final third.

He has the license to drop back and allow Joel Piroe to run beyond him into the number nine position, which means that Rutter is difficult to mark as he could position himself to face up against the centre-back or the central midfielder.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

This has resulted in a string of phenomenal performances from the £70k-per-week talent, who has racked up six assists and 16 'big chances' created in 15 Championship starts.

Rutter has made 2.6 key passes and completed 2.3 dribbles per outing for the Whites this season, which speaks to how impressive he has been as both a dribbler and a creator.

The 21-year-old magician has consistently been able to beat opposition players with the ball on either foot and, at the end of his runs, has also been able to create huge opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net – just as the PSG star has in France.

Farke's system and tactics have created an environment for the Dembele-esque attacker to thrive at the top end of the pitch and, hopefully, his form will continue throughout the rest of the season as Leeds eye an instant Premier League return.

Smith, Warner, Bancroft bans to stand as CA rejects submission

Cricket Australia has thrown out the claim by the ACA that the cultural review findings meant the players should be allowed to return early

Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will serve the full term of the bans imposed upon them by Cricket Australia for their roles in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal after the board considered their sanctions in the wake of the release of the independent cultural review of the governing body.Meeting via video link for an extraordinary board meeting on Monday, the board resolved to uphold the sanctions imposed via the CA code of conduct in March, suspending Smith and Warner for 12 months each and Bancroft for nine. This means Smith and Warner will remain ineligible for international or domestic cricket until the end of March 2019, and Bancroft until the end of December.Earl Eddings, the interim chairman of CA, stated that the Board felt that continued efforts to alter or reduce the bans, whether from the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) or elsewhere, was placing “undue pressure” on both the banned players and the Australian team as a whole. Since Justin Langer was appointed coach following the resignation of Darren Lehmann, Australia have won only five of 21 international matches across three formats – three of these against Zimbabwe and the UAE.”We believe the ongoing conversation about reducing the sanctions puts undue pressure on the three players – all of whom accepted the sanctions earlier this year – and the Australian men’s cricket team,” Eddings said. “As such, the Cricket Australia Board doesn’t intend to consider further calls for amendments to the sanctions.”Though we recognise that this decision will be disappointing for the ACA, we thank them for their submission. Our commitment to continue building a strong relationship between CA and the ACA in the interests of cricket in Australia remains and we look forward to meeting with them shortly to that end.”CA’s decision means that Bancroft’s likely first opportunity to play for Australia again will be in the Test series against Sri Lanka at the end of January, while Smith and Warner must wait until April, ahead of the World Cup and Ashes in England later next year. ESPNcricinfo revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Board would be happy to move a schedule March ODI series into April, allowing the former captain and vice-captain to be eligible.”It would’ve been great to see the guys play some domestic cricket in the back half of the season but we’ve got to respect CA’s decision on that and for the original ban to stand,” Aaron Finch, Australia’s white-ball captain, said. “It would’ve been great for Steve and Davey also, with Cam coming back shortly, but respect the decision and just got to move on now.”The ACA’s attempt to have the bans overturned, announced publicly the day after the release of the independent cultural review, was looked upon critically by CA amid attempts to improve relationships between the governing body and the players’ union. It also did not meet with uniform support from all past or current players, amid debate about whether they should be allowed back to Sheffield Shield competition earlier than originally stipulated.”The Cricket Australia Board has carefully considered all elements of the ACA submission and has determined that it is not appropriate to make any changes to the sanctions handed down to the three players,” Eddings said. “Despite the absence of any recommendation regarding the sanctions in the recently released Ethics Centre Review, the Board has deliberated on the ACA’s submission at length.”We have reconsidered the sanctions as they apply to each of Steve, David and Cameron in light of the ACA’s submission and the Ethics Centre Review and Recommendations. The original decision of the Board to sanction the players was determined after rigorous discussion and consideration.”CA maintains that both the length and nature of the sanctions remain an appropriate response in light of the considerable impact on the reputation of Australian cricket, here and abroad. Steve, David and Cameron are working hard to demonstrate their commitment to cricket and have our continued support to ensure their pathway to return is as smooth as possible.”In announcing his intent to challenge the bans, the ACA president Greg Dyer had said the union would be “relentless” and did not rule out legal action. However, on Tuesday the ACA accepted the decision, while stating that the board’s call was “disappointing”.”While the ACA respectfully disagrees with CA’s decision, it is accepted,” the ACA said in a statement. “The ACA regards CA’s decision as disappointing. It remains the ACA’s view that a recalibration of these sanctions would have been a just outcome. The ACA has done all it could in support of our submission, and now considers the matter closed.”The ACA’s submission was made because: CA’s sanctions were issued without consideration of the findings of the Longstaff review; CA said that it accepted Dr Longstaff’s findings that concluded CA needed to take responsibility for its ‘winning without counting the costs’ culture that contributed to the events in Cape Town; CA’s sanctions on the players were excessive.”The ACA’s submission provided an opportunity for CA to recalibrate its player sanctions by permitting a return via domestic and/or international cricket.”

Southampton could find dream Armstrong partner by unleashing "monster" in 2024

Adam Armstrong continues to be the main man up top for Southampton under Russell Martin, the proven Championship goalscorer is already into double figures for the Saints after 19 games played.

Southampton's ever-reliable number nine has scored 12 goals in the second tier to date, the 26-year-old helping himself to brace last match against Cardiff City as the Saints romped home to a convincing 2-0 win.

It could be argued, however, that Martin's men depend on Armstrong a bit too much to bail them out in tricky games.

Che Adams and Will Smallbone come in as the next joint top scorers for the Saints this campaign, but are way off Armstrong's hefty tally with a paltry three goals.

Ross Stewart's unfortunate time in a Saints strip to date hasn't helped Southampton share out the goal load effectively either, the Scottish attacker joined the promotion hopefuls from Sunderland in the summer but reoccurring injuries have gotten in the way from him making an impact so far.

Martin could think outside of the box to end his ongoing quest of finding another clinical goalscorer therefore, Saints flop Paul Onuachu potentially returning from a fruitful loan spell out in Turkey ready to be gifted another opportunity to impress up top.

Paul Onuachu's statistics at Southampton

Costing Southampton £18m last season from Genk, Onuachu was meant to the "significant signing" the Saints needed in their bid to mount a relegation escape, as per then-boss Nathan Jones – the Belgian striker hopefully firing in pivotal goals to help his new club stay afloat in the Premier League.

Instead, Onuachu would look out of his depth to the dismay of his new employers who felt ripped off.

The towering, 6 foot 7 striker is still goalless for the Saints, failing to find the back of the net in 12 appearances last season as Southampton sunk down to the Championship.

Folding on the big stage with the south coast club, Onuachu's unerring ability to finish chances without flinching for his previous club Genk was nowhere to be seen in England – the 29-year-old scoring an impressive 85 goals from 134 appearances for the Belgian side.

The disregarded Southampton striker has found a new lease of life away from the club this campaign out on loan at Trabzonspor, finding his shooting boots again.

This spell out in Turkey to date could potentially save his career at St Mary's from completely going down the drain, Martin watching on now with intrigue to see if Onuachu can keep up this newly found electric form.

Paul Onuachu's statistics at Trabzonspor

Onuachu has amassed seven goals already out on loan, from just ten appearances to date for his new short-term club – with journalist Dean Jones hinting that he could be deserving of "another opportunity" back at St Mary's at the end of the season.

Trabzonspor's number 30 has managed to put away seven strikes despite only accumulating an xG of 4.39 playing in Turkey, as per Sofascore, helped by an outrageous strike finding the back of the net against Konyaspor last month.

Onuachu acrobatically connected with a cross into the area to catch the opposing goalkeeper off-guard, Trabzonspor thankful for their loanee's moment of magic which allowed the team to get over the line and win 2-1.

Southampton fans will already be fantasising about Onuachu's return to St Mary's as a different beast, slotting effortlessly into the striker positions alongside the 5 foot 8 Armstrong to form a frightening partnership in attack – the old-school 'little and large' combination.

Yet, Saints fans have fallen victim to getting carried away about the ex-Genk "monster" before – as hailed by journalist Benjy Nurick – and they'll opt to temper their expectations somewhat in case he fails to deliver again.

But, Martin will still have his fingers crossed that the £18m Southampton dud can return and become a deadly striker for the club after such a disappointing start to life in English football.

Predicted Norwich XI vs Preston including Sainz and no Hernandez

Norwich City return to Championship action this afternoon as they host struggling Preston North End at Carrow Road looking for their fourth win in five matches.

Their opponents come into the game off the back of three straight defeats and David Wagner's side have the chance to add further misery to Ryan Lowe and his men.

The Canaries have averaged 39% possession or less in each of their last three league matches, which yielded two wins and a defeat, and could seek more control in order to put in a convincing performance.

To do this, Wagner could make some changes to the starting XI that featured in their most recent win against Bristol City away from home last Sunday.

With this in mind, here is the possible Norwich line-up that could be selected to take on Preston on home soil today…

1 Angus Gunn

Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Starting off between the sticks, Angus Gunn should retain his position in the side after a strong performance on his return against the Robins.

The Scotland international made two crucial saves during the first half to keep his team in the match and earn himself a Sofascore rating of 7.7.

2 Jack Stacey

At right-back, Jack Stacey could make his 18th start of the Championship campaign since his move from Premier League side Bournemouth on a free transfer, ahead of the inexperienced Kellen Fisher.

3 Shane Duffy

Norwich defender Shane Duffy.

Shane Duffy could keep his place at the heart of the defence after a commanding performance at the back against Bristol City on Sunday.

The Republic of Ireland international won seven of his nine duels throughout the 90 minutes, which included six of his seven aerial contests, and made six clearances.

4 Kenny McLean

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

Kenny McLean started in an unfamiliar centre-back position last weekend but it was one that he adapted to with ease as the Scotland international produced an impressive display.

He was brought in to replace Danny Batth in order to provide a left-footed balance and quality ball-playing out from the back, which eventually paid dividends in stoppage time with his assist for Adam Idah's winner.

5 Dimitrios Giannoulis

The Greek international should start at left-back ahead of Sam McCallum after shaking off an injury scare against Bristol City on Sunday.

Dimitrios Giannoulis hobbled off after a rough challenge during the second half last time out and Wagner has since confirmed that the full-back will be available for selection against Preston.

6 Marcelino Nunez

Norwich midfielder Marcelino Nunez.

McLean's new role at centre-back and Adam Forshaw's continued absence has provided central midfielder Marcelino Nunez with a big opportunity to nail down his place in the team.

The Chile international has only started four Championship matches so far this season and a strong performance against Preston could allow Wagner to trust him more moving forward.

7 Gabriel Sara

Norwich midfielder Gabriel Sara.

Possibly the easiest decision Wagner has to make is the selection of Gabriel Sara in midfield next to Nunez as the Brazilian magician has been in fantastic form this season.

He has racked up five goals, eight assists, and eight 'big chances' created in 19 league starts for the Canaries throughout the 2023/24 campaign to date.

8 Christian Fassnacht

The first change that could be made to the XI is Christian Fassnacht coming back into the starting XI in place of Onel Hernandez, who started on the left on Sunday.

Norwich's summer signing could return and start on the right, which would then allow Jonathan Rowe to move over to the left, after a disappointing run of form from Hernandez.

The Cuba international has gone seven games without a goal or an assist and his last strike at Carrow Road came against Manchester United in a 3-1 defeat in October 2019.

Fassnacht has scored three goals in 11 league starts this season, including one in his last three starts, and could, therefore, provide a greater threat on the flank.

9 Borja Sainz

Norwich forward Borja Sainz.

The second change that could be made to the XI is Spanish forward Borja Sainz coming in for Liam Gibbs as part of the dynamic front two in Wagner's system.

Interestingly, the summer signing came off the bench against Bristol City in that position and it could get the best out of his knack for finding the back of the net.

Sainz, who scored against Fulham in the League Cup earlier this season, scored nine goals in 32 Super Lig starts for Giresunspor last term.

Gibbs, on the other hand, has managed one goal and zero assists in 43 Championship games for Norwich since the start of last season, which does not suggest that he is likely to have a telling impact on the match in a forward position.

10 Jonathan Rowe

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

Another simple selection for Wagner is to start Rowe out wide. The England U21 international is a constant threat to defenders with his direct running and pace, which has been backed up with seven goals and one assist in the league.

Arão mantido na zaga? Gabigol e Pedro juntos?

> Confira a classificação e simule as próximas rodadas do Brasileirão!
