New environment has made difference, says 'satisfied' Finch

The Australia T20I captain on the mood in the camp after their horror run against England

Liam Brickhill in Harare03-Jul-2018Aaron Finch has now broken the world record for the highest individual score in a T20I twice, and the Australian captain said that his 172 against Zimbabwe was “up there” as one of the best innings he has ever played.”It’s nice to break my own record,” Finch said. “Satisfying. It’s something that I’ll look back on when I’ve finished playing and be really proud of. Any time you get a few out of the middle like that it’s always nice. We started off quite well, and I just got on a little bit of a roll there. It was nice to get a few away.”Finch helped to break a couple of other records during his knock, adding the highest ever partnership in a T20I alongside D’Arcy Short, and then presiding over Australia’s largest ever win in this format. With two wins in two in Zimbabwe, the horror of Australia’s tour of England is beginning to recede, and Finch suggested that unfamiliar opponents and setting had made a big difference.”We enjoyed our trip the UK,” Finch said, somewhat paradoxically. “The results were horrendous for us, obviously, as we lost all six games. But I can’t question how we trained or the intensity we trained at. When you get a bit of an inexperienced group together and you get on the back foot early in a series like that, you’re chasing your tail for a long time and England just didn’t let up. They didn’t give us a sniff to get back into the series at all. That’s just the quality side they are at the moment.””The mood in the camp has always been really positive, and I think coming here we’ve brought that confidence that we had, but probably with a bit more self belief coming into a new tournament against two sides that we haven’t played for a quite a while compared to a team that dominated us last summer in Australia and then did so again. So new opposition and new environment has made a difference here so far.”Aaron Finch was in supreme touch•Associated Press

Zimbabwe might be new opposition for the Australians, but Finch is familiar with the country – having been here five times on various tours – and also with some of its players. Zimbabwe allrounder Solomon Mire holds Australian citizenship and scored a rookie contract with Melbourne Renegades in late 2013, training alongside Finch, who was Renegades captain. He debuted for the Renegades while Finch was away on national duty, but saw enough to be very well aware of just how destructive he could be.”I definitely knew what he was capable of,” said Mire, whose only over in the match went for 21, with 20 of those runs coming off Finch’s bat. “I think you have to admire some of these feats. It’s not every day you get to see such hitting coming off. When it does, everyone really just… it’s quite amazing to watch, but not good for the team.”Some things have changed for Finch since he first broke the T20 batting record back in 2013. He’s “a little bit older and a little bit wiser now” and, by his own admission, back then he “was just trying to make my way in international cricket and had a day out and got lucky in England”. He has finally cemented his position in Australia’s limited-overs sides, and circumstances have also handed him a captaincy role that he might have had his eyes on two years ago, before Cricket Australia handed that position to Steven Smith in all formats. “I think in the shorter formats of the game I’ve cemented my place a little bit more over the last couple of years with some pretty consistent performances,” he said. Then again, some things have not changed. He is still yet to break into the Australian Test side, and he has now scored more international hundreds (13) than any other batsman without playing Test cricket. That stat might frustrate a more hot-headed player, but Finch recognises that white-ball runs can’t necessarily be parlayed into a Test cap.”I’m not frustrated,” he said. “I think that when I was a little bit younger I had an opportunity to really start pushing my case for a few years. But I had probably 18 to 24 months of really lean red-ball cricket. I was playing good one-day cricket for Australia but I couldn’t put the runs on the board in four-day cricket. I’ve got myself to blame for that.”But, a little older and a little wiser, he has now learnt which of his skills might be transferable to long-form cricket, and is much more comfortable playing his natural game. “Now I’ve slowly started to build my red-ball game up again and I feel a lot more comfortable now playing my natural game, ultra-aggressive whether I’m playing in Australia or England. I do feel that over the last couple of years I’ve adapted my game and I’m in a much better position than I was a couple of years ago.”Finch’s next stop after the tri-series will be as one of Surrey’s overseas players for the T20 Blast. It’s a gig he’s looking forward to, and after his record-breaking knock, Surrey will be keener than ever to have him on their books. “Surrey is a great club to play for,” said Finch. “The middle of London in the middle of summer is a pretty good place to be. It’s an amazing place to play cricket, The Oval. The plan is to get over there after winning this series and try to pile on as many runs as possible.”When Finch broke the world record for the highest score in a T20I for the first time, journalist Jon Hotten wrote for ESPNcricinfo that his was “a record that’ll be lucky to survive five years”. As it turns out, Hotten was right and the record has fallen two months short of five years. “T20 […] has a long time left, and we are only at the edges of what is possible there,” Hotten wrote. “Aaron Finch will be a mad footnote in its relentless progress.” Having expanded the limits of possibility once again, Finch adds another footnote to this format’s rapidly expanding history. Who knows what heights he may still reach.

Liverpool: Klopp could sign perfect Szoboszlai partner in £16k-p/w "leader"

Liverpool enjoyed a tremendous summer transfer window that has completely transformed last season's sapped midfield, but could yet continue to bolster their options in January.

Who are Liverpool interested in signing?

The Reds struggled in the Premier League last season and finished fifth at the end of a disappointing year, but Jurgen Klopp did not rest on his laurels and made a wealth of acquisitions to restore the midfield.

This was carried out at the expense of a defensive addition, despite many viewing a centre-back as a priority; according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, Liverpool are still interested in Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, though they are unlikely to issue a swoop this winter.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Instead, as per O'Rourke, it appears the club are poised to pounce on Brazilian machine Andre, who was pursued during the summer but not granted a departure by Fluminense.

The 22-year-old could be a successor to Liverpool's Thiago Alcantara – whose contract expires in the summer – and would complete the rebuild by occupying the No. 6 position in Klopp's squad.

How good is Andre?

Liverpool were pushing hard to sign Andre in the summer but ultimately failed to secure his signature, with his Brazilian outfit reluctant to part with him midway through the league season and having

Sources such as Sky Sports revealed that offers such as £20m were floating about, but it swiftly became clear that Fluminense were unwilling to discuss finalities for such a figure.

Fluminense midfielder Andre.

And rightly so; Andre has started 20 times in the Brasileiro Serie A this term, dazzling having completed 95% of his passes, making 2.1 tackles and 8.0 ball recoveries per match and succeeding with 70% of his dribbles and 62% of his ground duels.

The "leader" – as he has been hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – also ranks among the top 1% of midfielders among relevant leagues for pass completion and passes attempted, and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

With his tough-tackling, tenacious approach and supreme level of ball-playing ability, Liverpool would finally have the specialist needed to occupy the holding position at the heart of the midfield.

His arrival would only unlock the already remarkable talents of Dominik Szoboszlai, who joined the Anfield side from RB Leipzig for £60m in the summer.

Szoboszlai was hailed a "generational talent" by journalist Marcel Moeller prior to his move to Merseyside, but it's swiftly becoming clear that he is possibly the most influential arrival in a long time under Klopp's tutelage, having pumped energy and enthusiasm into the team in abundance.

The £16k-per-week Andre's composure and control in the middle would only enhance, and perhaps complete, the midfield, bringing out the very best of Szoboszlai's limitless talents.

The £120k-per-week Hungarian ranks among the top 11% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues for pass completion and progressive passes, the top 85 for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for clearances and the top 1% for blocks per 90.

With his output and technicality charging the fold, Andre's stability and constant-flowing stream of passes will only allow Szoboszlai to weave into even greater positions.

It could be a match made in heaven, and one that would be crucial for Liverpool in ensuring the promising start to the season is sustained and built upon when crossing the winter mark that can fell so many aspiring outfits.

Aston Villa: Emery could land Tielemans upgrade with "complete" 6 foot gem

Aston Villa are certainly riding the crest of a wave right now as they secured their sixth Premier League win of the season with a rather straight forward 4-1 thrashing of West Ham United on the weekend.

Unai Emery was clearly just getting started by leading Villa to a seventh-place finish last season and their form during the current campaign ensures they have a realistic chance of securing a top six spot or whisper it quietly, a Champions League berth for next year.

Of course, they will have to maintain this over the course of a whole term while defeating established sides like Manchester United, Arsenal, and Manchester City at some point, but with the way the Spaniard has them playing right now, nothing appears out of the question.

Aston Villa managerUnaiEmery.

Having lured players such as Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres, and Nicolo Zaniolo to the club in a bid to strengthen his squad, and it has worked a charm.

He may not stop there, however, as his meticulous approach suggests there could be a few more arrivals during the January transfer window, and if Villa are still challenging at the top end of the Premier League while progressing in Europe, improving his squad depth could be crucial.

With this in mind, it appears as though the Midlands side are showing interest in a current Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler ahead of the winter window.

Are Aston Villa interested in signing Carlos Soler?

According to a recent report by Le Parisien (via One Football), Emery looks to be keeping tabs on the Spanish ace as the January window fast approaches.

The outlet claimed that PSG manager Luis Enrique is looking to add some more creativity to his side and could be set to bolster this area, yet this would potentially require him to make a few sales in order to accommodate some new arrivals.

Carlos Soler

Brighton and Hove Albion are also showing interest in the 6-foot gem and, having played for PSG and Valencia, his next stop could be the Premier League.

The 26-year-old ace is currently earning around £100k-per-week and this is certainly a wage that Villa could afford, especially when you consider that their highest earner is Boubacar Kamara, who is reportedly taking home £175k-per-week.

According to Football Transfers, Soler is currently valued at €25.6m (£22.3m), although he does have another four years remaining on his current contract, giving Enrique some more flexibility with the fee he could charge prospective buyers.

How good is Carlos Soler?

PSG won the Ligue 1 title last season and with the triumvirate of Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe obviously stealing headlines throughout the campaign, scoring 58 goals between them, it was Soler who played the unassuming role in the heart of the midfield.

Across 26 league matches last term, he scored three goals and grabbed three assists while registering ten goal contributions altogether in all competitions and key played a key role in their title triumph.

Before PSG however, he was an integral member of the Valencia squad, racking up a rather remarkable 38 goal contributions – 24 goals and 14 assists – across his final two full seasons with the Spanish giants, and it is clear he could give Emery and extra attacking threat from the heart of the midfield.

Over the previous 12 months when compared with positional peers across the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions, he currently ranks in the top 1% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.32), the top 14% for assists per 90 (0.19), and the top 11% for progressive passes received per 90 (4.91).

This indicates that not only does he feature highly for goals and assists, but the midfielder likes to burst forward and receive the ball in dangerous positions on a regular basis.

Could he even be an upgrade on one of Emery’s summer signings? Youri Tielemans has failed to really showcase his true talents since joining Villa.

Is Carlos Soler better than Youri Tielemans?

Since arriving at Villa Park, the Belgian international has failed to start a league match under Emery and currently ranks in a lowly 12th spot for accurate passes per game (11.6), while also ranking 12th for key passes per game (0.2) and 11th for goals and assists(one) which indicate that he hasn’t made the required impact as expected.

In comparison, Soler ranks 15th for accurate passes per game (18.7) across the PSG squad while also ranking 15th for key passes per game (0.6) and seventh for goals and assists (two), and considering how tough it is to stand out at the French giants, he is performing fairly well when called upon.

The Spaniard has also registered more shots per 90 (2.32 vs 0.58) than Tielemans while also having a better pass success rate (87.7% vs 86.9%), taking more touches in the attacking third (64 vs 36) and receiving more progressive passes (13 vs five) per 90, suggesting that Soler has the edge on the Belgian across a wide range of performance metrics.

It is no wonder then that former Valencia star Curro Torres, who coached Soler during his time in the youth academy, praised him back in 2021, saying: “He is the complete midfielder and can act as a 6, 8 or 10; he has power, arrives in the box and can score.

“I know him and I know that he can still bring his game to the next level. He has taken on responsibility in the team too.”

These attributes could be a huge bonus for Emery as he aims to strengthen his side and with Tielemans not quite making an immediate impact following his summer arrival, Soler could see the potential to secure a regular spot in a team who are on the rise.

It would signal yet another statement of intent by the former Arsenal boss if he was able to lure the PSG midfielder to the Midlands, especially given his performances on the continent since making his debut for Valencia during the 2016/17 season.

If Emery wants constant improvement at Villa, he needs to continue his fine record in the transfer market and secure players who are heading to the peak of their powers.

Diaby and Torres fit that bill having joined during the summer and there is no doubt Soler is about to enter his prime years as a footballer, becoming an upgrade on Tielemans in the process, due to the aforementioned statistics.

Anderson's five-for blows India away for 107

The Report by Varun Shetty10-Aug-2018Stumps In a match that had already lost a day to rain, at a ground where a middle-aged man attempted belly flops on the covers, on a day the media-box’s kitchen was reportedly flooded, India’s batting line-up found ways to be the clumsiest, most broken part of the game. Sent in to bat on a day punctuated by three rain breaks, India offered little resistance against a four-pronged pace attack that made optimum use of the conditions to flatten them for 107.The first sign of why both captains were looking to bowl came pretty early – no, we’re not saying India might have bowled first just to avoid facing James Anderson. Such was the majesty of his outswinger from middle stump that M Vijay would have been caught square and lost his off stump even in the heat of his hometown Chennai, let alone the damp, dank and dark batting minefield that Lord’s had turned into in the first session.KL Rahul looked in control when he hit his two boundaries, but found no respite from England’s new-ball pair otherwise. Having got an unplayable ball in the channel in the second innings at Edgbaston, Rahul looked to be trying to get on the front foot as much as possible. However, his discipline was of little use against Anderson, whose entire bowling plan revolved around pushing his awayswingers wide outside off to feed the batsman’s leave, before getting him to jab instinctively at one that appeared playable but jagged away at the last moment. In his last spell of the day, Anderson dismissed Ajinkya Rahane with the same tactics, after India’s No. 5 had quietly begun to settle against a predominantly short-of-a-length strategy. With Rahane’s wicket, Anderson separated India’s most comfortable-looking pair – Ashwin being the other half of it – and from there it didn’t take long. Kuldeep and Ishant were bagged and Anderson’s 26th five-wicket haul took him to 99 wickets at Lord’s. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (SSC, Galle, Kandy) has taken 100-plus wickets at a Test venue.Ashwin was by far the most settled batsman for India, and loosened up after Rahane fell. Having earlier shown some solidity, getting behind the line of the ball constantly, Ashwin swished boundaries off the back foot, in front of square, on either side of the wicket. Nifty hands-only nudges past the bowler helped pick up his other runs. Until he was trapped in front by Stuart Broad, a leading edge that Rashid lost in the sky was the only blemish in his innings.Getty Images

The biggest talking point of the match came before the final rain break, when India, having lost their openers early, were looking to see out the new ball and overcast conditions. Brought in for Shikhar Dhawan to do just that, Cheteshwar Pujara had jabbed his way to 1 off 24 balls when a mix-up with Virat Kohli brought an ugly end to his innings.Pujara had responded to Kohli’s call after dropping the ball into the off side and, having seen his captain sprint the first few steps, put his head down to commit for the run. As Ollie Pope came swooping down at it from fourth slip, Kohli’s decision to stop and turn back was received late by Pujara, whose clunky strides were hard to stop even as Kohli made for the non-striker’s crease. Pope had the simplest task as he walked to the stumps to complete the run-out. Seconds later, the biggest thunderstorm of the day descended on Lord’s and, cruelly, Pujara was forced to run back into the pavilion.Upon returning, India were met with gleaming sunshine, and Kohli put up the biggest partnership of the innings with Rahane for the fourth wicket. But their 34-run stand was not a comfortable time for Kohli, whose penchant for stabbing in front of the body was on show again. Kohli survived many times during his century at Edgbaston, either through dropped catches or through soft hands; that seemed the pattern again, as edges fell short, and Jos Buttler dropped him at second slip. However, there wasn’t any follow-up fortune. The very next ball, Kohli’s IPL team-mate Chris Woakes swung one away from middle, got Kohli reaching well in front, and had him taken at second slip. Again, it was Jos Buttler.A repeat performance from Woakes and Buttler – a drop followed by a catch – accounted for Hardik Pandya, who was sent in at No. 6, and Sam Curran bent a massive inswinger past Dinesh Karthik’s flappy drive away from the body to take his off stump.India were the last team from the subcontinent to lose at Lord’s, five Tests and seven years ago. Should there be uninterrupted play on the third day, India are in danger of growing their list of losses at the venue.

Hearts messed up on "aggressive" gem who has outshone Rowles this season

Heart of Midlothian suffered yet another Premiership defeat on the weekend as Glasgow Rangers scored two late goals to deny them their first domestic win since September.

It has been a tough start to the season under Steven Naismith as the Jambos now currently occupy seventh place in the table, just two points from the relegation playoff spots and something has to change at Tynecastle in the next few weeks.

Lawrence Shankland, a player who netted 28 goals across all competitions last season, has struggled to match the same sort of consistency this term, finding the back of the net on just seven occasions and this is costing Hearts massively.

This has resulted in the Edinburgh side having the joint second worst attacking record in the Premiership and unless Shankland improves along with several others chipping in with some goals, they could slide towards the relegation spots.

With players such as Josh Ginnelly leaving during the summer, Naismith has struggled to replace his attacking output and this appears to have cost the club this term.

Steven Naismith

This has been a recurring theme in recent years, allowing talented players to leave for free or minimal fees. Of course, it is difficult to keep players at the club when a higher-profile team is calling, but losing several players has arguably weakened Hearts of late.

John Souttar is another example of someone who had impressed during their spell at the club yet left for nothing last year to join Rangers.

How much Hearts signed John Souttar for

The young defender had made a solid impression at Dundee United, making 73 appearances for the club before Hearts came calling in 2016, securing his signature for a fee in the region of £170k.

John Souttar

It proved to be an excellent piece of transfer business as Souttar became one of the finest defenders at Hearts during his six-year spell in Edinburgh.

John Souttar’s Hearts statistics

Overall, the Scot made 162 appearances for Hearts, yet he also missed 117 games through injury in just six years as he suffered a couple of Achilles tendon ruptures which ruled him out for large periods at a time, and it is a testament to his resilience that he managed to overcome these setbacks.

He enjoyed some high praise during his stint at the Gorgie side and none more so than from Craig Levein, who hailed him after an excellent performance against Inverness in the 2019 Scottish Cup semifinal.

He said: “I’ve known him since he was 12 years old, and he’s just got better and better. When he came here from Dundee Utd, we just needed to give him time.

“He’s grown into the player that I hoped he would be and for me he’s the best centre back in Scotland.

“Just for the fact that he can do wonderful things. His passing of the ball Saturday was fantastic, but he is also now capable physically of competing with any centre forward. His pace is very, very good and he’s strong, focused and aggressive."

Perhaps a tad hyperbolic at the time, yet his performances grew in stature, and he eventually made his Scotland debut in 2018 having impressed at Hearts.

His final season at the club saw arguably his most consistent performances as he ranked second across the squad for accurate passes per game in the Premiership, while also ranking second for clearances and third for interceptions per game as Hearts reached the Scottish Cup final while finishing third in the league.

By this point, however, Souttar had already signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers and joined them in the summer of 2022 for a fresh challenge.

What John Souttar did after leaving Hearts

While moving to the Ibrox side was a step up, Souttar’s old injury issues soon returned to haunt him. During his first competitive match for the Gers, he was brought off prematurely due to suffering an ankle injury and this disrupted his debut season in Glasgow.

He missed a grand total of 46 matches, playing only 13 games during the whole season, yet it gave him a platform to build on ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, and he has impressed so far for the Light Blues.

Indeed, his league displays have been so impressive that he is actually outperforming Hearts defender Kye Rowles this term, despite the latter enjoying a solid campaign thus far.

Souttar has not only averaged more accurate passes per game than the Australian defender (63.3 vs 55.6), but he has also made more tackles per game (0.9 vs 0.8), been dribbled past on fewer occasions per game (0.1 vs 0.3) and lost possession less often each match (8.7 vs 10.4).

The Scot has also demonstrated a greater physical presence as he won more ground (1.7 vs 1.5) and aerial duels (3.4 vs 2.4) than the current Hearts centre-back and there is no doubt he would be of great help to Naismith during this current moment in time.

The 6 foot 1 gem is finally showing the Ibrox faithful the ability which led to his move from Hearts in the first place and has become one of the key members of the squad, especially since getting himself back fit following his ankle injury last season.

Rowles is not having a bad season either, currently ranking first across the squad for accurate passes per game while also topping the pile for interceptions and ranking second for clearances per game, indicating that he is performing well.

Kye Rowles

With Souttar outperforming him however, it goes to show that Hearts have made a mistake in letting Souttar go, even though it looked inevitable he would depart one day.

His recent displays for Rangers have proven that he can succeed at the very highest level and Hearts should be given plenty of praise for sticking by him during his injury nightmare and developing him into one of the finest centre-backs in the country.
