Excited by how Sri Lanka fought over four days – Pothas

The Sri Lanka coach said the side’s process of improving began soon after their 3-0 series loss to India at home earlier this year

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Kolkata20-Nov-20171:07

SL’s competitive spirit a huge positive – Pothas

They may have ended at 75 for 7 and been saved from defeat by bad light, but for most of the five rain-interrupted days at Eden Gardens, Sri Lanka were the dominant side. While concerned by his team’s batting collapse on the final afternoon, interim coach Nic Pothas was pleased overall with their performance to begin their tour of India. It was the continuation, he said, of a process of improvement that began when India visited Sri Lanka in July-August and whitewashed them 3-0.”The process absolutely began there, in Sri Lanka,” he said. “The day the Indian team got on a plane and flew out, the process started. It probably started before that, because of the amount of planning that goes on, so that we were ready. Things like that don’t happen overnight and certainly we’re not going to be counting our chickens.”We’ve played a couple of good Tests against Pakistan [against whom they won 2-0 in the UAE], we’ve played pretty well here. But we’ve got a long way to go. But this side is going to be a very good side in the future, there’s no doubt.”Pothas hoped Sri Lanka could keep this positive trend going through the rest of this series.”I think you always set a goal to improve,” he said. “We had a series in Sri Lanka where we did not compete at all. We’ve come here, and we’ve actually been very competitive in the first Test match. That’s a huge positive, and it’s a credit to the support staff, the players, the way they got about preparing, about strategising for this game.”You know, it’s only one game of cricket, this series is three games long. But the takeaway is going to be that we played a series against them, we got tougher. We obviously had some success; we played some very good cricket. So we’ll see if we could continue to ride that wave.”In the fourth innings, set a task of either surviving 47 overs or chasing 231, Sri Lanka crumbled against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami. Pothas said India’s quicks maintained intense pressure on the batsmen, and that they would only learn to deal with such pressure by experiencing it more often.”I think there always are concerns if you lose seven wickets,” he said. “That’s going to be a concern for any team. But you look at three very good quicks, you’re going to be under pressure, but the more often you play, [the better you will get at handling it.] I think these two series back-to-back against India is going to be the making of the Sri Lankan team in the future, because if you play against quality under pressure you become better.”So yes, it’s a concern but I’m more excited about how we fought and came out the other end. Actually, you’re looking at one day or a couple of hours of cricket; I’m looking at four days of cricket where we played very good cricket.”India were in trouble in the morning session when three quick wickets from Suranga Lakmal left them four down while only leading by 91. Sri Lanka continued to chip away at the wickets, but India pulled away thanks to Virat Kohli’s 18th Test hundred, a knock that Pothas termed “fantastic”.”I don’t think it went wrong [for Sri Lanka],” Pothas said. “You’ve got to look at it in two ways. There was a fantastic innings played by a world-class cricketer. I thought we bowled very well, we fielded very well. The intensity was good. Yes, we had India under some pressure. Virat played a fantastic innings and actually set up a very good game of Test-match cricket. I don’t think anything went wrong. I think there was some very good cricket on both sides.”Kohli’s innings set up a tense finish, with Shami and Bhuvneshwar steaming in backed by the noise of a large Monday crowd, and sparks flew when Shami exchanged words with the combative wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella.”That’s fantastic, isn’t it? That’s Test-match cricket,” Pothas said. “It’s a tough environment, it’s a cauldron, and that’s how players earn respect from each other. I thought it was played fantastically well. Very tough, high-pressure. Very enjoyable. Great for the spectators.”

A 323-run stand, the highest of the season, between Windward Islands’ Tyrone Theophile and Devon Smith for the second wicket steered their match against Leeward Islands to a draw in Basseterre. Devon Smith, the leading run-scorer of the tournament so far with 1095 runs in 10 matches, racked up his sixth century this season.Electing to bat first, Windward Islands were off to a shaky start after losing their top-three batsmen within five overs. A 66-run stand between Kavem Hodge and Roland Cato, and a 53-ball 48 from no. 9 batsman Delorn Johnson, carried Windward Islands to 197.Devon Thomas led Leeward Island’ reply with 172 off 247 balls, his fifth first-class century, with 12 fours and five sixes. He struck a 148-run partnership with Montcin Hodge after the loss of two early wickets. Despite the efforts of Larry Edwards (3 for 109) and Kyle Mayers (3 for 64), handy lower-order contributions carried Leeward Islands to 405 for 9 before they declared. In their second innings, Windward lost opener Kirk Edwards early, but Smith and Theophile’s record partnership helped Windward Islands secure a draw.

Liverpool: £85k per-week titan had his best game for years v Villa

Liverpool put in a statement performance on Sunday afternoon by comfortably dispatching Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield.

The Reds were dominant throughout, registering 17 shots on goal, creating five big chances and garnering an xG of 2.09 as Villa were unable to live with Jurgen Klopp's rampant front line.

Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a beautifully controlled left-footed half-volley before Matty Cash was powerless to prevent a Darwin Núñez strike from hitting the post, deflecting off him and rolling into the back of the net.

Despite speculation linking him with a big-money move to Saudi Arabia before the transfer window slammed shut, Mohamed Salah put any speculation to bed by closing the scoring and rounding off a fantastic performance.

While Liverpool's attack drew most of the praise, and rightly so, there were reasons to be optimistic about their defensive shape in the absence of Virgil Van Dijk.

Prior to this match, the Reds were significantly scrutinized for how open they were defensively and without the Dutchman marshalling the back line, many thought Liverpool would struggle to live with Villa's attacking prowess.

But Joe Gomez stepped up to the plate in place of Van Dijk and inspired his side to a clean sheet, restricting Villa to only three shots on target, zero big chances and an xG of 0.69.

How did Joe Gomez play against Aston Villa?

Since joining the club from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Joe Gomez's Liverpool career has been maligned by injury setbacks, defensive mistakes and difficulties in sustaining a regular place in the Reds starting XI.

Although he joined the club eight years ago, the 27-year-old has only gone on to make 111 appearances in the Premier League as the ever-present partnership of Joel Matip and Van Dijk forced Gomez into biding his time for opportunities.

piero-hincapie-joe-gomez-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

Following Liverpool's 3-0 defeat against Wolves in February, the performance of Gomez was shined under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as ESPN pundit Steve Nicol branded his display as "horrendous".

He said: "Liverpool started this game just backing off and asking to be ran at. Two-down after 15 minutes. [Joe] Gomez and [Joel] Matip were as a centre-back partnership were absolutely horrendous".

While this was a particularly low point in his career, he was praised highly by Gary Neville earlier on in the season for his imperious display against Manchester City which saw Liverpool beat the reigning champions 1-0 at Anfield.

"That’s my man of the match, Joe Gomez," Neville said on commentary on Sky Sports.

"It could’ve went to James Milner but it’s going to him. He’s been outstanding at right centre-back."

During his time on Merseyside, man-of-the-match performances have been few and far between but having starred in Liverpool's victory on Sunday, Gomez reined in the plaudits from many with journalist Neil Jones labelling his performance as his "best game for Liverpool in a long time."

The £85k per-week titan was near faultless in every aspect of his game, impressing with his defensive capabilities, winning three of his five ground duels, 100% of his aerial duels and making two interceptions, as per Sofascore.

Not only that, but he also showcased his ball-playing ability, completing 95% of his passes while three of his four attempted long balls were accurate.

That aspect in possession was truly outstanding during the game as the Englishman made a mammoth 103 passes and had 121 touches during the encounter.

Having been written off throughout his Liverpool career, imperious performances like these will give supporters hope that the best is still yet to come from Gomez.

Aston Villa: Smith’s 2019 signing has seen his value rise 126%

Aston Villa had a strong summer in the transfer window, with the Midlands side making impressive captures to bolster their squad for the treacherous 2023/24 season ahead.

The Villans hit the jackpot when they hired Unai Emery back in October 2022, with the club going from peering at the relegation zone in 16th place at the time of his arrival, to sealing a European finish come the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Not many would have anticipated the effect that the manager’s arrival would have on the club, as he utilised the talent in the squad he inherited from Steven Gerrard and transformed the outlook at Villa Park.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Higher performances and new goals has put the Villans on course to have an encouraging 2023/24 campaign, with the side set to endeavour in their first European journey since 2010 after successfully qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

While Emery was the driving force between the elevation of standards in the Midlands, the squad equally rose to the occasion with a host of names proving themselves to be fundamental to the club at present.

Ollie Watkins contributed to 21 goals in 37 Premier League appearances in 2022/23, however the marksman’s efforts weren’t enough for him to win the club’s player of the season award, with another star leading the way for his teammates to follow.

How much did Aston Villa sign Douglas Luiz for?

Signed by Aston Villa in 2019 from Manchester City, the £15m paid for Douglas Luiz now looks to be one of the better pieces of business done by the club in their history.

Captured at the age of 21 by Dean Smith, the Brazilian was dubbed an “extremely talented” youngster with an “outstanding pedigree” by the manager, praise that has been supported by the calibre of player he has developed into.

The midfielder began his career in his homeland with Vasco da Gama, rising through the academy to eventually impress in the senior side, at which point he made the move to Europe to join City.

douglas-luiz-transfer-gossip-aston-villa-arsenal-edu-arteta-granit-xhaka

His career in Manchester was transitioned to Spain, where he played on loan at Girona due to work permit difficulties preventing him from representing the Citizens in a single competitive appearance.

The youngster managed to secure the experience in Europe sufficient to make another Premier League move, where he was snatched up by the Villans just two years after the start of his anonymous time at City.

At the time of his arrival in the Midlands, the combative ace stressed his desire to finally achieve things in England, saying “I cannot just talk the talk but also walk the walk and that's my main aim”, via Sky Sports.

Walk the walk is exactly what the midfielder has done, taking his opportunity at Villa Park with both hands and prevailing as one of the club’s most critical squad members in recent years.

What is Douglas Luiz’s market value now?

Purchased for a mere £15m with reference to the impact he’s had on the side, Luiz’s value has soared to £34m as per CIES Football Observatory, amounting to a rise of 126% since the point of his arrival in the Midlands.

Good performances not only attract attention from those within the club, but outside too, with there being a slight worry over the midfielder’s future at Villa with interest reported from two clubs in particular over the transfer window.

Back in July, The Sun reported that the Brazilian had been eyed in north London, with both Arsenal and Tottenham said to want to add the highly-rated 25-year-old to their ranks.

Luckily for Villa, nothing progressed in the speculation, however it did tell of the calibre of talent they have at their disposal, with a suggestion of just how much the former City man could be worth at the point that he does leave the club.

Why is he worth that much?

Earning both the Supporters Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season last term, Luiz had a campaign to remember in 2022/23, in a year that he came to life under Emery alongside his teammates.

The Brazilian played all but one of Villa’s games in the league last season, showing his importance in the middle of the park by scoring six goals and claiming six assists while maintaining his authority as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Lauded as a “warrior” by journalist Jack Grimse, the 25-year-old’s level of performance was told by evidence far beyond his contributions to goals in claret and blue.

Averaging an impressive 2.24 tackles and 1.23 interceptions per 90 in the Premier League last term, the midfielder flexed his dominance in protecting the back line, averaging 4.4 total duel wins per game for the Villans, via Sofascore.

His expertise went beyond his defensive strengths, with his passing and assistance in the final third also a key element to his game, as told by him averaging 1.38 key passes and 4.55 progressive passes per 90 in the league.

As his game develops, it becomes more and more clear of how complete his talents are in the position he is most effectively deployed at, with his leadership skills also coming to life in commanding the midfield at Villa Park.

How much does Douglas Luiz earn?

Considering the importance of his presence in Emery’s set-up, the Brazilian doesn’t even rank in the top ten of Villa’s highest earners at present.

Earning £75k-per-week, the 25-year-old picks up a weekly wage half the value of his midfield counterpart Boubacar Kamara, who is the joint-highest earner with Clement Lenglet and Youri Tielemans.

douglas-luiz-arsenal-aston-villa-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-martin-odegaard-kevin-de-bruyne

From salary, to his £15m price tag, Luiz is one of Villa’s bargains and a player that represents one of the most successful pieces of business that the Midlands club have done in recent times.

While his services are critical to Emery’s, it bears consideration just how much the £34m-rated ace could be sold for in the future, with clubs already swarming to keep a close eye on his movements in the transfer windows to come.

Dean Smith is well remembered at Villa Park for his work in restoring the club to the top flight from the Championship, however his part in signing Luiz is up there with his greatest achievements while in the Midlands.

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAfghanistan sprung a surprise on New Zealand by handing them a massive 202-run drubbing in Christchurch to storm into the semi-finals of Under-19 World Cup. Afghanistan not only scored 309 after opting to bat, they then routed New Zealand in under 30 overs to register their third win in four matches of the tournament and set up a semi-final clash against Australia.Afghanistan’s innings was marked not by an individual effort but by several useful partnerships. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran set the tone with a stand of 117 runs in just over 20 overs. Gurbaz was the quicker of the two with his 69 off 67 balls, studded with seven fours and three sixes, and Ibrahim stroked a patient 68 off 98 balls. They lost two wickets in quick succession before No. 4 Bahir Shah took over to pile on more runs with the lower order even as Afghanistan were 226 for 5 in the 45th over. From there, Bahir and Azmatullah Omarzai smashed 79 runs in under six overs to storm them past 300, highlighted by two sixes in each of the 47th, 49th and the 50th over – all struck by Omarzai who hammered 66 off only 23 balls. Bahir remained unbeaten on 67 off 72.New Zealand’s chase started on a poor note as an in-form Rachin Ravindra was run out for a duck in the second over. Offspinner Mujeeb Zadran, who has already played ODIs and the BPL, dented them further by rattling the stumps of opener Jacob Bhula (5) and captain Kaylum Boshier for a duck. New Zealand then slipped from 18 for 3 to 20 for 4 before Katene Clarke (38) and Dale Phillips (31) put on 66 runs for the fifth wicket. But legspinner Qais Ahmad trapped both batsmen lbw in the space of three deliveries and New Zealand never recovered from 86 for 6.Mujeeb and Ahmad wiped out the tail too and finished with 4 for 14 and 4 for 33 respectively.
