Ashwin guides Worcestershire towards promised promotion

Worcestershire closed in on the points they need to secure promotion thanks to half-centuries from R Ashwin and Ed Barnard

County Championship round-up: Hampshire slip towards drop

The winds blew southerly and they blew soft on the second day of this game. They conferred a warm blessing on the cricketers as if healing them after a Monday filched from November when a heavy sky had lain over the ground like a grimy cloth and the talk had been of sad departures. The breezes allowed Worcestershire’s cricketers to collect four of the six bonus points they need to confirm promotion and they also allowed Durham’s players to show a little of the resilience which has always characterised their cricket, even in dark times. Perhaps the latter was the more important demonstration, although you could have found few people in the Basil D’Oliveira Stand ready to agree.Worcestershire need only mind their own business this week. Six points will be enough to secure a place at English cricket’s top table. Events at Grace Road may reduce that requirement but neither that game nor any other need concern Joe Leach or his players. Sometimes the simplest truths are also the most reassuring and so the large and rather boisterous crowd at New Road cheered each bonus point and applauded extravagantly as landmarks were passed or wickets taken. By the close Durham were still 193 runs in arrears and have only five wickets to spend. One imagines not only Worcestershire’s promotion but also their title will be confirmed very soon, although Paul Collingwood may have something to say about that.Three Worcestershire batsmen made fifties albeit that Joe Clarke had added only 19 runs to his overnight 46 when Graham Onions lured him cannily into the drive and Collingwood took the catch. Clarke had done his best work on a drear first afternoon when his eight boundaries had offered a riposte to the day.The rest of Worcestershire’s innings was dominated by contrasting half-centuries by R Ashwin and Ed Barnard. Ashwin batted with classical simplicity, reaching forward to drive the ball through the covers or to leg glance it to the New Road stand. His only inelegance was fashioned by modernity when he reverse-swept Ryan Pringle. Ashwin is already a popular figure at New Road, a development caused as much by his availability to the general public as his skill with a cricket ball. For his part Ashwin enjoys being a county cricketer; he can walk into Worcester and buy a coffee without being mobbed or needing bodyguards.Ashwin made 82 and seemed likely to pick up his seventh first-class century when he was leg before on the front foot to Liam Trevaskis, thus becoming the slow left-armer’s maiden wicket in the first-class game. One hopes Trevaskis will dine out on his success. By then, though, Ashwin had steered Worcestershire to their second bonus point and had added 86 for the seventh wicket with Barnard, who had brought up the 200 with a sweep to square leg off Trevaskis. That shot was typical of Barnard, who later hoisted Trevaskis into the pavilion and smacked Pringle for two sixes in one over when Worcestershire were nine down. The first of these smashed the front door of Foley’s café, which lies within the precincts of the ground and caused the establishment’s closure on health and safety grounds. Some of the regulars at New Road were ready to make the case that their own health was not assisted by the decision. Cakes and ale are a serious business in these parts.Graham Onions claimed a four-wicket haul•Getty Images

Barnard was last out when swinging wildly at Mark Wood but the most successful Durham bowler was Onions who added Leach and Josh Tongue to his bag with the second new ball. Onions finished with 4 for 68 from 22 overs, the sort of figures he has been returning for 14 summers at the Riverside. The elegiac tone already present at this ground was thus deepened by personal dimensions. Would Onions bowl for Durham again? Not if they lose by an innings.Certainly Keaton Jennings will play only one more innings for the county. The opener’s move to Lancashire was confirmed on Tuesday and one hopes he plays some more distinguished shots in his second innings than he managed in his first attempt. A couple of streaky fours were followed by an ugly cut at Tongue and an edge to Ben Cox. Tongue made a second breakthrough six overs later when he beat Jack Burnham for pace and then whistled one past the batsman’s chest before bowling him with the last ball of the over. Thus do chess players remove their opponent’s pieces for fun before executing checkmate.Durham’s fortunes declined further when Leach removed Cameron Steel but Collingwood, as if embodying defiance, added 76 with Graham Clark before being bowled for 27 when making room to cut Ashwin. And yes, the spinner’s variations of pace and spin adorned a long but rich evening session when the shadow of the pavilion lengthened over the ground and one was reminded how much one will miss this stuff. Then, as if to offer slapstick in the midst of soliloquy, George Rhodes bowled two quite execrable overs of offspin and was butchered for 36 runs by Clark, who scampered to his fifty in the embers of evening, hitting five fours and three sixes. But the epilogue to the day still belonged to Worcester and to their captain, Leach, who caught and bowled Clark off a leading edge for 60. Home joy was increased when news came in of Northants’ late loss of wickets at Grace Road. Perhaps Worcestershire’s promotion will be confirmed elsewhere after all. Perhaps it little matters now. The cricket had been enthralling; the game had reclaimed itself from its sadder tendencies.

Arsenal Could Secure A Huge Partey Upgrade In £50m "Little Warrior"

Arsenal may have already spent big this summer, but that has not stopped the rumour mill from continuing to link them with even more stars…

Is Nicolo Barella coming to Arsenal?

The latest could actually prove to be the most influential, with Italian outlet Calciomercato suggesting that the Gunners could be set to swoop for Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.

Having been linked with Newcastle United earlier in the window, with a touted £50m fee likely pushing them towards their eventual Sandro Tonali deal, this is a switch that could now prove imperative in perfecting Mikel Arteta's squad.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

The report states that they hold concrete interest in the Italy international, as they note him as a direct replacement for Thomas Partey.

This move could hold links with the potential sales of Folarin Balogun and Takehiro Tomiyasu too, both of whom have been touted with an Emirates exit. Football Transfers value the 26-year-old at €56m (£48m).

What kind of a midfielder is Nicolo Barella?

Given he is noted as someone who would instantly usurp their current Ghanaian midfield general, it is therefore expected that he would slot in nicely beside another summer signing, Declan Rice.

As a combative, physical yet elegant defensive presence, the former West Ham United captain would likely benefit from such a mobile midfielder who can both aid his role in screening the backline, but also push forward to offer an offensive impetus.

The former quality is succinctly shown in his data from last term, as he posted a 7.08 average rating in the Serie A, bolstered by his 1.6 tackles and 4.4 total duels won per game, via Sofascore.

However, with the goalscoring vacancy left in the engine room by the departure of Granit Xhaka, Barella could step up to occupy this role too, given he posted 12 goal contributions in the league alongside 1.6 key passes per game, via Sofascore.

thomas-partey-1

The Swiss international only scored one more goal and one more assist than the Inter gem during what turned out to be his final Premier League season.

By covering both bases with this acquisition, whilst also having Rice as a mainstay in the midfield too, Partey would swiftly become obsolete, not least due to the fact has recently turned 30 and no longer fits in with the youth-focused philosophy in north London.

Barella would fit Arteta's system with ease, capable of retaining possession but also providing that attacking impetus needed to take the fight to Manchester City. Having starred as a number six or a number eight, he could slot in beside either Jurrien Timber or Oleksandr Zinchenko, allowing them to invert and form a solid midfield two, or push forward alongside Martin Odegaard as Xhaka did so well last campaign.

He is hard-working yet economical with the ball, as talent scout Jacek Kulig once sought to support the former after he branded the Italian a "little warrior" for his relentless efforts combined with his 5 foot 8 stature.

Jurgen Klopp has even been alerted to his talents, noting back in 2022:

"That Barella is not able to play is not bad for us. He's a really good player, a really good player and I like him a lot. He has all the things you want from a midfield player: he is aggressive, he is technical, he can run for ages and all these kinds of things. That's a top-class player."

To be revered by such a fine manager is testament enough to suggest he is ready for the step up, to avenge his recent Champions League final disappointment against the Cityzens by helping Arsenal beat them to the Premier League.

For all the excitement his potential arrival could bring, Partey would surely become surplus to requirements.

GOIÁS MELHOR NO INÍCIO

Ele faz parte do time principal do Vasco desde 2013.

GOL & GOL

Ryan Reynolds Stunned By 5-5 Wrexham Comeback

League Two club Wrexham have managed to pick up a point in a 5-5 draw with Swindon Town thanks to two last-gasp goals.

What happened in Wrexham 5-5 Swindon?

The Welsh outfit, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, never seem too far from the sort of drama that would often be found in a Hollywood script.

But that's just football for you, and the beautiful game has delivered yet another exciting moment for fans of the Red Dragons to enjoy this weekend at the Racecourse Ground.

Indeed, now playing in League Two having secured promotion back into the EFL last season, Wrexham had just one win in their first three games and would have been hoping for all three points on Saturday afternoon.

However, late on in the game, they were 5-3 down – with Jake Young (twice), Charlie Austin and Dan Kemp (twice) having scored for Swindon, and Jake Bickerstaff, Elliot Lee, and James Jones for Wrexham – and so most would have accepted defeat was on the cards.

Not to buy into that sort of doom-and-gloom attitude, however, the home team found a glimmer of hope when Jones pulled one back in the 92nd minute.

Incredibly, Lee was then able to level the game when a freekick taken from the edge of the box was parried out to him, resulting in a bit of a goalmouth scramble.

The 28-year-old midfielder made no mistake as he prodded the ball in, meaning Wrexham were able to recover and secure a point in what ended up being a 10-goal thriller against the Robins.

Popular podcaster Dan Cook from the HLTCO podcast summed up the chaos that has been surrounding the club since their promotion up into League Two, tweeting: "Wrexham were 5-3 down on 90 minutes at home to Swindon today, they came back to draw 5-5 with goals on 92 and 96.

"After just 4 games in League Two, they’ve scored 13 and conceded 13. Box Office viewing."

You can see the moment the last equaliser was scored in the footage below, with fans in the stadium going wild – much like the commentators as well.

Are Wrexham English or Welsh?

Although Wrexham play in the English Football League, they are indeed Welsh, with the county borough located in northeastern Wales along the English border.

The arrival of Reynolds and McElhenney – and the Welcome to Wrexham documentary has helped the club grow earn global power and triple in value along the way.

Their reputation is so big now, that before the current campaign even started, they were backed by a supercomputer to pull off back-to-back promotions, and were tipped to win League Two outright.

Well, it's still early days, but Wrexham haven't had the smoothest of starts to life in the EFL. Indeed, after this stunning 5-5 draw, they now have one win, one defeat, and two draws from their opening four matches.

Regardless, Reynolds was evidently impressed, as he took to Twitter to say: "So much heart. #NeverLeaveAWrexhamMatchEarly"

Manager Phil Parkinson, however, was less impressed after the 5-5 draw, telling the press: "The lads were never ever giving in. If you put on a Wrexham shirt that's a requirement. But equally, we've got to be honest with ourselves. We need to do better."

Mott critical of England's slow approach

“To bat with pretty minimal intent on day one when you get the best of conditions, to say you’re trying to win the Test is not in my realms of thinking,” said Australia’s coach

Australia’s coach Matthew Mott has criticised England’s approach to the inaugural day-night women’s Test match, questioning whether the visitors ever had genuine intentions of trying to win after they showed little willingness to take the game on after opting to bat first on a pristine North Sydney Oval pitch. In a result that left the multi-format Ashes series open leading into the final Twenty20 leg – England must win all three matches to prevail – Australia were unable to force victory on the final day after Ellyse Perry’s epic double century had built up a big first-innings lead. However, Mott was dubious about England’s first-innings approach, soaking up 116 overs to make 280 before the hosts tallied 448 from only another 50 overs.”I think both teams have got to be honest about whether they were trying to win the Test match,” Mott said in Sydney. “To bat with pretty minimal intent on day one when you get the best of the conditions, I think if you’re going to sit back and say you’re trying to win the Test is not in my realms of thinking.”We certainly would’ve been disappointed with that scoring rate on day one. That slowed the whole Test match up and made it difficult to get 20 wickets for both teams. I thought it was a monumental effort for us to bowl them out for 280 given they won the toss and batted first on that wicket.”We were really pleased with that, but I suppose that backed us into a bit of a corner with the game taking a slow path, that we had to bat big in that first innings and get right ahead and roll the dice that we could get 10 wickets and not have to bat again. It certainly wasn’t the way we wanted to play the Test but I’m pretty sure if there was maybe a bit more grass on day one and two, got the first innings through a bit quicker, that we might have seen that result.”England’s coach Mark Robinson argued the issue was more to do with the type of pitch prepared for the match, which lacked the grass to be exploited by the seamers early in the match and then dried out into a slow and low surface where sharp spin was about the only assistance on offer.”Ultimately we want to play on better wickets … the biggest disappointment is it wasn’t a fresh wicket, which I don’t get for this one-off Test, pink ball and we haven’t got a fresh wicket,” he said. “You’ve got a young leg spinner [Amanda Wellington], she needs bounce. You’ve got Perry, [Katherine] Brunt, I take my hat off to [Megan] Schutt, all of them, they run in hard and then sometimes you want them to deserve better.”I sat on the edge [of my seat] yesterday unfortunately having to watch Ellyse Perry relentlessly go on in her quest of excellence, which it was, and I actually felt like I was in something special again and it reminded me of the day at Lord’s [the World Cup final]. It was a special day to have nearly 4000 there for a pink-ball Test match to watch a player relentlessly go on.”Yes we’ll talk about the wicket and we should play on better wickets but hopefully that’ll show the ICC and a lot of other people that there is an appetite for Test match cricket. We’ve got to understand our product don’t we, we’ve got to entertain people. We want all of these 12,000 to come back.”

Leeds Ready Left-Back Approach

Leeds United are readying an approach to sign Stoke City left-back Josh Tymon, however, they aren’t the only Championship side keen on his services.

What’s the latest Leeds transfer news?

The Whites and Daniel Farke look set for a busy final few days of the transfer window, with owners the 49ers Enterprises sealing a marquee move for striker Joel Piroe on Wednesday evening.

The club will pay Swansea City an initial £10.5m which could rise to £16m with add-ons. Piroe became the fifth arrival of the summer after Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Sam Byram and Joe Rodon.

Alongside Piroe, Leeds have also agreed a fee with Bayer Leverkusen for midfielder Nadiem Amiri, so the German appears to be on course to become the sixth addition.

However, after both Piroe and Amiri, it doesn’t look as if the club have any plans to stop when it comes to incomings, with a new left-back seemingly on the radar.

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds are considering a move by readying an approach for Tymon. The report claims that second-tier rivals Swansea City are also keen on the player, and it remains to be seen if Stoke would be willing to let the full-back leave late in the window.

Who is Josh Tymon?

Leeds have Leo Hjelde and Junior Firpo on the books at left-back, whereas Sam Byram has provided cover with the pair both out through injury recently.

Tymon is 24 years of age and can play as a left-back or left midfielder, highlighting his attacking ability. The Englishman moved to the Potters back in 2017 and after loan spells with MK Dons and Famalicao in Portugal, has gone on to make 120 senior appearances for his current employers.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Now valued at a career-high €3m by Transfermarkt, Tymon was hailed by former manager Michael O’Neil, labelling him as a player who is athletically very good and quick.

"Josh is one that I'm delighted to see playing as he is now because he was a boy I felt wasn't in a great place. He had a difficult time with changes of manager at the club, having been brought here as a young player when we were in the Premier League with a lot of potential.

"He never lost what he had, his natural attributes: athletically very, very good, quick, left sided. What he's got now is that his confidence and belief has grown.

"He understands the game. He's got good game intelligence and he's easy to work with. I always felt from a manager's point of view that there was a player in there but he had to get it out of himself as well.

"Credit to him because he's done that and he's playing with a real belief and confidence in himself that he has to continue."

A move could well be one to keep an eye on before the September 1 deadline, but with links to more midfielders Glen Kamara and Lewis O’Brien, Leeds’ focus after Piroe and Amiri could be on bolstering their midfield ranks even further before looking at a left-back.
