Sunderland Finalising Agreement To Sign 18-Year-Old Talent

Sunderland are closing in on another new signing, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Eliezer Mayenda has reached an agreement to move to the club.

Who is Eliezer Mayenda?

With the 18-year-old only in the infancy of his career, it means that there isn't a lot to go off when it comes to stats and performances from the youngster. The striker has only had one full campaign at professional, first-team level so far with current side Sochaux and that came in 2022/23 with the French side.

Despite his age though, he was entrusted to play for them on 15 occasions in Ligue 2, albeit only one of those appearances was an actual start. It led to the attacker bagging himself one goal – which, on the surface, doesn't seem like much. Mayenda though completed only 3.2 actual lots of 90 minutes, so it resulted in a rate of 0.31 goals per 90 on average, which is impressive for such an inexperienced raw talent.

The striker has also already been capped within his country's youth setup. He's played three times for Spain's Under-17 side, with no goals to his name as of yet. He was given his debut last year and if he continues to feature prominently in a well-respected first-team ahead of this campaign. then more appearances should follow for the teenager.

Are Sunderland signing Eliezer Mayenda?

Now, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, those showings may come in England rather than France. That's because Sunderland are now very advanced in their bid to try and land Mayenda it seems, with the Black Cats having finally reached an agreement with Sochaux to bring him to the Championship.

No deal has been officially confirmed and it also isn't clear how much a transfer will set the side back, but it looks as though he could officially put pen-to-paper on a contract with the EFL side on Saturday, as per Romano's update on Friday morning: "Sunderland completed the agreement with Sochaux to sign Eliezer Mayenda, Spain U18 highly rated striker born in 2005. Deal sealed, he will sign tomorrow as new Sunderland player."

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

If he does sign for the club, it would provide boss Tony Mowbray with another much-needed option in attack, given the uncertainty surrounding Ross Stewart.

Mayenda could slot in right away in attack and has only featured so far as a centre-forward in his career – so could fit in as a traditional number nine. He isn't a target man in the same mould as Stewart though, with the teenager only standing at about 5 foot 9 compared to the Scot's 6 foot 1 frame.

The Spaniard then presents a different type of option for the club in their forward line. In addition, despite being only young and having a modest scoring record in a first-team environment, there are those that have watched Mayenda in action and feel he has plenty of positive attributes. Football journalist Josh Bunting stated that the ace is "strong" and well capable of holding the ball and linking the play up.

Whilst his early stats suggest he isn't a poacher of a lot of goals (yet), if Sunderland can wrap up a transfer, it's another example of the Black Cats recruiting well for the future and giving talent a chance in the Championship – and so far it has paid dividends under Mowbray.

West Ham Could Banish Soucek By Signing £35m ‘Master’

West Ham United are reportedly ready to continue their pursuit of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, as David Moyes remains on the lookout for reinforcements.

The Hammers must welcome new signings this window, particularly following the loss of Declan Rice and the £105m profit made by the gargantuan sale.

What’s the latest on James Ward-Prowse to West Ham?

As reported by The Athletic on Sunday, the Irons could secure the signing of Ward-Prowse for a reduced figure of £35m this summer.

The initial asking price from the Saints is said to be at £40m, making West Ham’s opening offer of £20m one that disgruntled the freshly relegated side.

Considering that the Englishman could fill the gap left by Rice, as well as bring an abundance of experience to the side, Moyes must act fast should he wish to finally get the deal over the line now that his price tag is clear.

How good is James Ward-Prowse?

Notorious for his expertise in set play on the south coast, the 28-year-old could be the ideal capture at the London Stadium this summer in the middle of the park.

Despite being part of a struggling Southampton side, the Portsmouth-born gem recorded 13 goal contributions last season, netting nine and assisting four, appearing in all of his side’s league fixtures, via FBref.

Lauded as a “master” for his dead-ball play by members of the media, the midfield maestro has far more in his locker than being a specialist in that area.

After a season threatened with relegation masked by the success of winning the UEFA Conference League, the Hammers must seek some creativity in order to lift themselves back up the table and Ward-Prowse could be that man.

One area they must address is the midfield, with captain and The Athletic’s pick for player of the season, Rice, embarking on a new venture in north London.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

While primarily, his vacancy must be filled with some urgency, the potential capture of Ward-Prowse could elevate the overall performance in the engine room, in a player that could challenge the current midfielders on show.

Despite being an integral member of Moyes’ squad, Tomas Soucek could find himself ousted by the Saints captain, who performed at a higher level to the Czech Republic international last term.

As per FBref, the Englishman averaged 5.05 progressive passes and 4.73 final third passes per 90 in the 2022/23 Premier League, showcasing the strengths he has over Soucek who averaged just 2.81 progressive passes and 2.14 final third passes per 90.

Despite the West Ham ace averaging a higher record of tackles per 90 with 2.46 to Ward-Prowse’s 1.74, the Southampton general has the fundamentals to unleash a challenge in the middle of the park, and to provide a threat going forward, which the Czech lacks.

Recording an average of 1.98 key passes per 90, the “unbelievable” talent, as heralded by former teammate Oriol Romeu, could add the creativity integral to unlocking the Hammers’ attack, with Soucek averaging just 0.48 per 90, via FBref.

Moyes could replenish his midfield with a further attacking option, in a player with 343 Premier League appearances and a host of attributes that could bolster the side.

Edwards' exit 'quite a big shock'

England’s players open up on the “turbulent” circumstances that saw Charlotte Edwards retire after being removed from the captaincy in 2016

England’s players have discussed, for the first time, the “turbulent” circumstances that saw Charlotte Edwards retire after being removed from the captaincy in 2016.Mark Robinson, England women’s head coach, made the decision to shake things up after the team’s failure at the 2016 World T20, telling Edwards – still a world-class batsman and a pioneer of the game – she would not be part of his plans. Heather Knight was subsequently appointed as captain and went on to lead England to victory in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday.Speaking before the final against India, Robinson said he believed he had made the right decision and that the team “had to go in a different direction”, having come to the conclusion that his players didn’t have enough belief.”I just knew it was right,” Robinson said. “When it’s that simple in your mind – and it wasn’t against Charlotte because Charlotte was still a very good player, but the team had to go in a different direction and we had to put things differently in place and it was something like 18 months before the next competition, this one. It was too long to wait and get through to before you start making changes.”During interviews to chart the team’s progress from the defeat in the semi-finals of the World T20 last year to their success at Lord’s, Jenny Gunn, the experienced allrounder who had been Edwards’ team-mate for more than a decade, said the decision to move on had come as a “bit of a shock”.Fran Wilson, one of the younger players who has enjoyed increased opportunities over the last 12 months, expressed similar feelings but felt Robinson’s call had been vindicated.”It was quite a turbulent time because Charlotte’s always been a part of the England team, as long as I can remember,” Wilson said. “So when it first all happened it was quite a big shock and probably affected the girls a little bit. But, I think in the long-run, what Mark Robinson has done has been really good for the team. That’s just testament to Robbo and the kind of faith he’s shown in all of us.”The change of leadership had immediate benefits, as England’s new opening pair of Tammy Beaumont and Lauren Winfield flourished during a run-soaked series win over Pakistan last year. Beaumont, in particular, has thrived under the guidance of Robinson, and was named Player of the Tournament after finishing as the top scorer in the Women’s World Cup.Beaumont won her first cap under Edwards, in 2009, and they opened together on several occasions. She gave credit to Edwards for laying the foundations for England’s future success.”It was a tough month or so,” Beaumont said. “Charlotte has been probably quite a big influence on the first half of my career. She’s also a good friend. It was hard to see her go through that but she’s moved on into the commentary box with dignity. She can look back at her career knowing that she did a great job for England and left us in a good place.”

Man Utd Eyeing Scholes 2.0 In "Phenomenal" £30m Titan

There has been an update regarding Manchester United's pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat…

What's the latest on Amrabat to Man United?

As respected journalist Laurie Whitwell revealed on Twitter, should the Red Devils manage to move on both Fred and Donny van de Beek over the coming weeks, there is a possibility that Erik ten Hag and co could firm up their interest in the Moroccan international.

The transfer insider stated: "Real Sociedad continuing talks with #MUFC over Donny van de Beek. Turkish offers for Fred not at level hoped, though. Two midfield sales would mean a formal approach for Sofyan Amrabat is expected."

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

In his attached piece for The Athletic, Whitwell revealed that United have already held talks with the Serie A side regarding a potential move and personal terms are not likely to prove a problem, with the 26-year-old having previously worked under Ten Hag at FC Utrecht.

Should Man United sign Amrabat?

The 6 foot 1 titan – who has been valued at around £30m – put himself firmly on the map of clubs across Europe as a result of his standout displays at the World Cup in Qatar, having undoubtedly been "phenomenal" in the tournament as Morocco reached the last four, in the words of The Star's Joe Crann.

Hailed as a "raging bull" by journalist, Amine El Amri, the Netherlands-born sensation proved he can offer a stern defensive presence in the centre of the park after notably providing a stunning, recovery challenge on France's Kylian Mbappe, while averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game in the competition as a whole.

A player with an edge to his game, the former Club Brugge ace is also something of a pass master in the centre of the park and is a figure who can seemingly dictate the tempo of the game, as he ranks in the top 5% among his European peers for pass completion, as well as in the top 8% for progressive passes.

Paul Scholes for Man United

That combination of an aggressive streak with the ability to run the show on the ball from his deep-lying berth perhaps evokes memories of a certain Paul Scholes, with the tough-tackling United legend having been a true genius when in possession during his lengthy stint at Old Trafford.

Like Amrabat in some ways, the one-club legend was also arguably a "complete" asset in the centre of the park due to his quality on and off the ball, with Barcelona counterpart Xavi Hernandez having previously said of his talents:

"Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away."

As club icon Sir Bobby Charlton also stated in the past, Scholes had the ability to "find a way to win, to make the killer pass or produce the decisive volley", having been a true difference maker in a glittering period for United under Sir Alex Ferguson's watch.

While hardly a threat in attack in the same way as the Englishman – having scored just 11 career goals to date – Amrabat proved under Ten Hag at Utrecht that he can also 'make the killer pass' if needed, having registered ten assists in just 50 games while working with the Dutchman.

Although it is yet to be seen if the Fiorentina man can replicate such form in the Premier League, it is clear to see why Ten Hag is keen on a reunion with a player who seemingly has shades of Scholes.

Celtic Can Land Clever Starfelt Heir With £60k-p/w Brute

Celtic were dealt a blow this week as the club officially confirmed that Carl Starfelt has moved on to join La Liga side Celta Vigo for an undisclosed fee.

Who has left Celtic this summer?

Prior to the Sweden international's departure from Parkhead, Brendan Rodgers had already lost central midfielder Aaron Mooy and winger Jota.

The former decided to call time on his professional playing career and retired from the game after one season in Scotland, whilst the latter completed a reported £25m switch to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad.

Marco Tilio, Hyun-jun Yang, Maik Nawrocki, Odin Thiago Holm, and Hyeok-kyu Kwon have all come in to bolster the squad but the Hoops could now be forced back into the market after this latest sale.

Who could replace Carl Starfelt at Celtic?

Rodgers could unearth a clever replacement for the Swedish central defender by securing a deal to sign reported transfer target Scott McTominay from Manchester United.

The towering titan has experience playing there for Scotland and once claimed that the position comes as "second nature" to him now, as he had played there previously at club level.

Despite being a defensive midfielder by trade, the Red Devils have played him in the heart of the defence on occasion and club legend Gary Neville suggested in 2020 that he could see a future for the 26-year-old ace in that role.

The former United full-back stated that the talented gem has the speed, aggression, and understanding of the game to thrive as a central defender, which has been utilised by Steve Clarke at international level.

Scotland international Scott McTominay.

McTominay has the physical and defensive attributes to excel in that position. Standing at 6 foot 4, the English-born brute is an imposing figure on the pitch who could provide a big presence in both boxes from set-pieces and crosses into the box to clear danger or provide a goal threat.

The Red Devils academy graduate only started ten Premier League matches last term but his form throughout the 2021/22 campaign showcased his ability across 28 starts.

In that season, he won an impressive 67% of his aerial duels and made 3.2 tackles and interceptions per match for his side, which is more than any Hoops player managed last term in the Scottish Premiership and shows that the £60k-per-week giant is able to consistently win possession back for his team.

These statistics show that McTominay is dominant in the air and does not allow the opposition to get the better of him in those battles very often, which could make him an ideal centre-back when it comes to dealing with opponents who want to consistently launch crosses into the box to create chances.

The United outcast, who ex-midfielder Danny Murphy dubbed a "nightmare" to play against due to his ability to "destroy" attacks, could, therefore, be a fantastic signing for the Hoops to replace Starfelt.

Due to him being a natural midfielder, McTominay would not be an obvious replacement for the Swedish titan but Rodgers could be clever and use his experience playing in that position to bolster Celtic's squad before the deadline passes next month.
