There’s often several signs that we are in that awkward space between the end of the Premier League campaign and the start of pre-season. It’s only comparable to the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. No football fan truly knows what day it is. We’re simply just waiting to be guided by the football calendar.In this awkward period, however, fans begin to show an underrated talent of somehow designing a nicer kit than some of the biggest sports manufacturers in the world manage to come up with.Some of the concept designs are outrageously good – almost too good to never find their way into the club shop.Along that line of thinking, Arsenal supporters have been the latest to be left in awe of a concept kit created by a fan, which many believe is better than the leaked away shirt of the 2023/24 season.

Arsenal’s 2023/24 kits

Credit where credit is due, Arsenal haven’t had more hits than misses when it comes to kits in the last few years. Adidas very rarely fail to leave fans of the North London club disappointed. And the same can be said for their new home shirt.

With a gold trim and classic red combination, it is the look of potential champions. Meanwhile, the added detail of the Invincibles’ results embroidered on the sleeve adds that extra touch of class.

Of course, Adidas do have some amending to do with that version, however, after including just 32 of the 38 results. Once that mistake is corrected, the Gunners will have themselves a kit to remember.

We wish the same could be said about the leaked away kit, which could be the worst that Adidas have released for the club so far. The shirt is almost tennis ball-like with the bright yellow primary colour mixed with the swerving black stripes in a bizarre design.

While they touted third kit isn’t much prettier either…

If the Gunners wanted to stand out, then Adidas have ensured exactly that. But, if they wanted to sell shirts, then they might be in big trouble next season.

Perhaps they’d be better off hiring the designer who created the concept kit below…

This is far better, isn’t it? The kit screams Champions League football with the gold badge combined with the golden trim. Given the gold trim on the home shirt, too, this concept version of the 23/24 away shirt would match up well.

Sri Lanka caused a brief flutter with four wickets for 56 runs, but that only came after South Africa had moved to 221 for 1. At stumps, South Africa were 351 for 5, their lead 432 with two days remaining.For most of the day, the only force that seemed capable of halting South Africa’s march was the weather: Bad light and rain halted play twice, either side of an early lunch break, for roughly an hour cumulatively. Then, belatedly, Sri Lanka’s bowlers began to find some success.Nuwan Pradeep dismissed Amla with the last ball before tea, making him the 10,000th lbw victim in Test history. Dushmantha Chameera got Cook to nick behind in the sixth over after tea, before Dhananjaya de Silva, bowling his offbreaks from around the wicket to both right- and left-hand batsmen, began turning the ball appreciably. Philander struck with his very first ball, shaping it away from the fourth-stump channel to induce a poke and an edge from Dhananjaya de Silva, who, on 43 overnight, had held Sri Lanka’s hopes of narrowing South Africa’s lead to manageable proportions. Five balls later, Lakmal realised he wasn’t quite to the pitch of a fullish ball to drive, checked his shot, and popped a low catch to mid-on, giving Philander his fifth wicket.Philander and Kyle Abbott beat the edges of Chameera and Pradeep frequently, but Sri Lanka’s Nos. 9 and 11 managed to stretch their total by 20 runs along the way. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel are both recovering from injury and their progress reports are encouraging

Dale Steyn brought seven-week-old Chobe, a Border Collie puppy, and nine-year-old Sadie, a golden retriever, to Newlands on Monday. Morne Morkel was there too, and had his 17-month old son Arias in tow. But this was not a play date for the two pacemen. They are both on the mend as they work towards comebacks and the progress reports from both are pleasing.Morkel has been battling a back injury that he sustained last July. Since then, he has played one first-class match for his franchise, in October, and was taken on South Africa’s tour of Australia where he played in three warm-up matches but not in the Tests.He was due to be considered for a List A game for Northerns on January 22 – the same match in which AB de Villiers made his return from elbow surgery – with a view to playing the third T20 against Sri Lanka but suffered a recurrence of symptoms and was unavailable for any game time. Morkel has been bowling in the nets and is hopeful of playing some List A matches for Titans in the one-day cup which starts next Friday, in an attempt to declare himself fully fit for the three-Test series in New Zealand in March.Morkel will not make himself available for the IPL in a bid to be as strong and fresh as possible for South Africa’s tour to England this winter. The three-month long visit starts with ODIs in May, the Champions Trophy in June, three T20s, and four Tests over July and August.Steyn is also targeting the England tour, although only the Test component of it. He has been out of action since breaking a bone in his shoulder during the Perth Test in November and was set to be sidelined for six months. Steyn started running and doing gym work in January and has now begun to swim, well ahead of schedule. He was initially due to hit the pool from the end of February but has been able to swim already, a sign that the shoulder is healing.Vernon Philander, who had neither a pet nor a child with him, was also at Newlands. Philander has not been playing for the Cobras in the first-class competition. He had a minor impingement of his ankle from the Test series against Sri Lanka and has been advised rest in the lead-up to the New Zealand series. Philander tore ankle ligaments in warm-ups in Bangalore in November 2015 and was out for the rest of the 2015-16 summer but has since been successful for South Africa in Tests in Australia and at home against Sri Lanka.

Having watched the Lilywhites slump to an eighth-placed Premier League finish last term, the future will likely consist of a revitalised Chelsea and Liverpool, an ever-improving Arsenal and Manchester United, and a Newcastle United team that will be desperate to retain their place in the top four.

That is even without mentioning the gatecrashers, as Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion now both have a taste of European football, too. Further reinforcement is needed to re-establish their place amongst the elite.

Given the all-action attacking philosophy of their new boss, which often consists of two aggressive No 8s, perhaps the addition of another offensive-minded midfielder could provide the perfect partner for their £40m man as the spearhead of a frightening engine room.

Given what reports in Spain have noted in recent months, that man could be Crystal Palace's £19m-rated star, Eberechi Eze.

Would Ebere Eze improve Tottenham Hotspur?

The England international starred last campaign for the Eagles, as a catalyst for their comfortable finish way clear of the relegation zone, with which they flirted for some time.

As a skilful attacking midfielder, the versatility of this trickster will likely be of huge value to someone as tactically astute as Postecoglou. He will see the 25-year-old as someone to underpin his system, able to morph to aid its progression and switch intelligently mid-game.

Not to mention he is just naturally a very talented footballer, as outlined in his ten goals and four assists last season posted in the league. This earned him his 7.12 average rating, which was further bolstered through 1.5 key passes, 1.1 tackles and 1.9 successful dribbles per game, via Sofascore.

To add the elegant ace alongside another the imperious Maddison would mark an instant injection of creativity from deep that they have been sorely lacking.

Last season, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg combined for a total of just nine league goals between them. Both Eze and the former Leicester City man surpassed that on their own.

When compared to other central midfielders across Europe, where Roy Hodgson and Patrick Vieira often deployed him, the former QPR wizard ranks in the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.

To imagine him striding out with the ball at his feet, forging space for his hypothetical teammate to then provide that deadly finishing touch, seems like a match made in heaven. It is no wonder he was branded a "magician" by Micah Richards, with his consistently spellbinding performances earning him a potential big move.

This pairing of Eze and Maddison could lead the press, create from anywhere and wreak havoc on opposition defences, yet they retain the mindset that makes them hard workers, too. As a couple of roaming 8s within the same team, they could cause carnage for the rest of the division.

Fifties from Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar took Tamil Nadu to the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, with a six-wicket victory against Baroda. The TN spinners had helped restrict Baroda to 219 before Shankar finished the chase with 15 balls remaining.Baroda had put on a solid start after electing to bat, with Kedar Devdhar and Aditya Waghmode putting on 92 for the opening stand. Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore broke that stand by getting Devdhar before Washington Sundar (2 for 20) and Rahil Shah (2 for 36) made double-strikes in the 27th and 33rd overs respectively to reduce Baroda to 138 for 5. Captain Irfan Pathan (27) and wicketkeeper Pinal Shah (36) put on 44 for the sixth wicket to steady the innings before Sai Kishore had Pathan caught. A 30-run stand for the seventh wicket took Baroda to 212 before they folded for 219. Sai Kishore finished with 4 for 59 to take his career tally to six wickets after only two List A games.TN openers Kaushik Gandhi and Ganga Sridhar Raju were dismissed by medium-pacer Atit Sheth (3 for 36) off consecutive overs with only 35 on the board. The early wickets were negated by two consecutive fifty partnerships – 60 for the third wicket between B Aparajith (28) and Karthik, followed by 88 between Karthik and Shankar, who remained unbeaten on 53. Karthik, who was named Player of the Match, struck four fours during his 107-ball 77 before he came down the track but missed and was bowled off Sheth. By that point, TN needed 37 to win and they got them without further loss.Bengal or Jharkhand, who play the second semi-final on March 17, will face TN in the final on March 19 in Delhi.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Federico Valverde this summer and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of the player.

Is Federico Valverde joining Liverpool?

According to reports in Spain earlier this week, the Reds are keen on bringing the Uruguayan to Anfield this summer.

It's said that Jurgen Klopp is obsessed with the idea of signing him and believes the player would fit perfectly into his tactical set-up.

As a result, Liverpool are preparing an offer of €90m (£77m) in an attempt to bring him to English football.

An offer at this expense will seem incredibly unlikely owing to FSG's tight spending structure and would make the Los Blancos talent the club's record-breaking signing ahead of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Darwin Nunez.

How good is Federico Valverde?

There is no doubt that Valverde would be an incredible asset in the centre of the park for Liverpool and should an opportunity arise to snap up the midfielder's services, it is one that should not be ignored.

The 24-year-old Champions League winner is one of the hottest prospects in his position across Europe; ranking in the top 16% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for non-penalty goals, shots on goal, pass completion and progressive carries.

Owing to his attacking strengths, Valverde – hailed a "monster" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – could be the perfect player to partner new signing Dominik Szoboszlai next season – causing chaos alongside the Hungarian ace to form an unstoppable threat and boost creativity to provide huge chances for their teammates in the final third.

Over last season, the Uruguay international displayed some key attributes that could complement Szoboszlai's weaknesses in his game, as Valverde is a much more prolific and confident ball-winner proven in his aerial duels won (73.8% v 28%), successful take-ons (70.5% v 50.5%) and dribblers tackled rate (50% v 40.5%), as per FBref.

Comparatively, the newly-signed Liverpool star was much more efficient in breaking the lines of attack to play the final ball into the box with more shot-creating actions per 90 (5.52 v 2.91), goal-creating actions per 90 (0.63 v 0.50), more assists (8 v 4) and a better shot on target rate (48.3% v 33.3%), proving that combining the pair's best attributes could cover the entire path to the final third with ease.

It remains to be seen whether Valverde will be allowed to leave Real Madrid this summer as Carlo Ancelotti is a huge admirer of his player and has previously claimed that he is an "untouchable" member of his squad, however, the Italian coach is set to leave in 2024 upon the expiry of his contract after accepting the Brazil national team job, so there is a possibility he could sanction a move.

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer to snap up the services of Valverde this summer and if Jurgen Klopp can convince FSG to table the transfer fee required it could set up Liverpool's midfield for years to come.
